Portugal back to winning waysPortugal 2-0 South Africa
A goal in each half from corners by Bruno Alves and Edinho (with the aid of South Africa defender Lucas Twala) gave the seleccao a 2-0 victory, albeit with an unconvincing performance against weak opposition. The most positive point for Portugal in a match played at training ground pace was the debuts of defenders Goncalo Brandao and Nelson, and striker Edinho. The last two especially did enough to suggest they can be viable options for Queiroz in the future. ReactionCarlos Queiroz, Portugal coach: “It’s always good to win. A victory is a victory, but we are aware that we have to work hard and score goals in the competitive matches. After the second goal it was natural that the pace dropped. It was very good that we played this game. “Overall in the training camp there were many positive things. We have gained positions, players, motivation.” (on his pledge to only shave his beard if Portugal scored two goals) “I made a bet with the players. A promise is a promise, now I’m going to get rid of it!” Bruno Alves, Portugal defender:“ My function is to defend. When I get the chance I try my luck up front. It was good that we won this game. The team showed talent, fight, and this is important to try and guarantee qualification. “I believe we can still qualify. This game was a test. We’re going to work hard to be ready to win the next games.” Edinho, Portugal striker: (On the goal) “I got a touch on the ball, although it also deflected off the defender’s foot. The goal is mine! I want to thank the confidence shown in me and the opportunity I was given. “I’m happy. I’ll continue to work hard. We have good forwards, and whoever plays will do everything to try and score. I hope to return and I’m going to do everything to merit the confidence of the coach.” by Tom Kundert |

Mr. Queiroz, shave the beard when we qualify...other than that, maybe we need a Santa miracle.
Win when it doesn't really matter.
But I guess it will build confidence in the team....
