Queiroz calls on big guns in his defence

Luis Figo and Alex Ferguson testify on behalf of coach

Alex FergusonLuis FigoCarlos Queiroz is fighting tooth and nail to keep his job. Luis Figo, Sir Alex Ferguson and the Benfica and FC Porto presidents, Luis Filipe Vieira and Pinto da Costa, have been enlisted by Portugal’s head coach as character witnesses.

Queiroz is today presenting his defence against alleged improper behaviour in Portugal’s pre World Cup training camp at Covilha. He is accused of abusing officials from the Portuguese Anti-Doping Authority. If found guilty he could be dismissed without compensation.

Figo and Ferguson were among the first to arrive at the headquarters of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for the hearing today, where Queiroz’s lawyers presented a 65-page document in his defence.

The crux of the matter is a phrase proffered by Queiroz which Portuguese sports daily Record claims to have reproduced: “porque é que estes gajos não vão a esta hora fazer o controlo para a cona da mãe do Luís Horta?”

For non-Portuguese speakers, suffice to say that the sentence invites the staff of the Anti-Doping Authority to go and carry out the tests on a certain part of the anatomy of Luis Horta’s mother. Horta is head of the Authority. Queiroz was upset that his players’ sleep was interrupted in order to take the drugs tests.

Plans upset

The coach has never denied saying the sentence, arguing that he was merely letting off steam at his frustration at being unable to prevent the players from being woken up, thus interfering with a carefully planned rest routine. Queiroz’s defence argues that the sentence was equivalent to saying “don’t bother us” although using slang and vernacular.

Queiroz has been involved in a number of controversies in recent months. A fractious relationship with the Portuguese press has not helped his cause, while many believe a campaign is afoot by certain members of the FPF to push him out. The endorsement of Queiroz’s character and technical competence by such illustrious football personalities as Ferguson and Figo will certainly carry weight.

The only thing all parties are in agreement with is that the matter must be resolved swiftly.
Portugal begin their European Championship qualifying campaign in under a month’s time, with a home match against Cyprus.

So did anyone get the "test results" for Luis Horta's mother?

With all the drama surrounding this case I reckon she was positive.

This is why I have hated this whole process. It has nothing to do with his performance. The Federation is attacking his character in hopes of finding a back door way of not paying him. That’s why all of these character witnesses have come into play. It’s an extremely dirty move, many coaches around the world will take note of this and will not want anything to do with Portuguese soccer.

Like I said before this does nothing but embarrass our country. Because of this trash, we are not practicing any matches before the Euro qualifiers like all the other countries are doing at the moment. These guys have completely lost focus of what matters, building the national team.

Kenny, you seem very naive. Have you ever been bound by a contract? A contract is EVERYTHING. If there is no buyout clause in a contract then not even 20 billion Euros can break a contract. And because nobody here knows the details of the contracts of the coaches that are under contract that is why is said not to mention coaches under contract in my last message.
Is it just me...

or does anyone else wonder why Ferguson or Figo (or Viera or Pinto da Costa) are at all relevant to this process?? Unless they were there holding p*ss cups or were having a sleepover with the players who were woken up, I don't see how anything they have to say could have any bearing on whether Queiroz acted inappropriately to the anti-doping team.

What a circus this whole thing has become. Either fine him and move on, or fire him if that's what the FPF really wants to do anyway. I understand that they would have to eat his contract (maybe the players could take up a collection!)

I have bean campaigning to get better testing. My reason for this is Football is awash with energy drugs and i don't mean the drinks we see being thrown on the pitch at every opportunity. We have had players in Italy Russia and England . And a spate of early deaths and on top of this i fond out a top premiership taking the killer drug Ephedrine that can cause heart failure and strokes. This could be just a coincidence but it makes you think. . The only Players who have bean caught is two championship players EX Everton Danny Cadamateri and QPR new signing Paddy Kenny.

If queiroz is to be fired then we should get Carlos Aberto Parreria ( the coach of bafana/south africa) in the WC
he performed near miracles on the bafana sqaud and turned them into a reasonable side plus he won the 2002 WC with Brazil

He also speaks the language and if he could put our talent in the right places (e.g. CR7) we could compete with champions like Spain and BRazil

C'mon now everyone and I mean everyone who;s had or has or will have a job; has , does and will Curse out his boss. Point of the mater is, YES he said those things not denying but if the PF wants to fire him fine do so. JUST pay the guy his money and end this micky mouse court hearing so that the NT can get its wits about them to before qualification. THe fact that the PF want to back out of paying for his services just drags out things and makes us look bad.

All that is going on is the Federation trying to fire a guy without having to pay him the remaining of the deal. It looks bad. If they want him gone, fire him. The way it's being handled looks very bad. Especially for an incoming coach.

I admit in screaming at tthe TV hoping for more movement and passing, but none came.
I understand the tactics that CQ used, and used effectively I might add. We might not like it, but his approach to the games gave us a shot.
The problem is that you can also say that his approach derailed our chances. Hence everyone wanting this guy out.
What I didn't like was some of the player selections and substitutions. When you needed a goal vs Spain he subbed in like for like when Pepe came off for Mendes was subbed. he also removed a striker from the field, when Almeida came off.
I understand that Portugal has wingers, but everyone up top for Portugal seemed to have played out of position. Just because a guy is good in the middle it won't make him good out wide and vice versa.
That for me was very disappointing to watch.

CQ's dealing with the media also leaves a lot to be desired. While Scolari got everybody excited and rooting and wanting, CQ comes across calculating. He thinks that he's the smartest man in the room, and he lets you know it.
We scream because he needs to win, but remember that he has won with Man United plenty.

I say give him the Euros. There are actually some young players that won't suffer too much should Portugal not qualify, and Cristiano will stilll be in his prime at the next World Cup.
The fact is that there's nobody that stands out willing to take the job. Everyone wanted to string up Scolari, and now they want him back. LOL. People are actually asking for Dunga, who used the same tactics as CQ and GOT fired. LOL!

CQ needs help in some of his player selections or better yet, put his stamp on the team and rolling HIS guys out there and seeing what they can do.

Trapattoni doesn't speak Portuguese when he was at Benfica the one year he only knew Spanish and he had to have a translator and I wouldn't consider him a canidate anyways also Lippi doesn't coach teams unless there Italian so he wouldn't come to Portugal either.

Carlos Alberto Parreira is out of a job right now and he's a World Cup winner from 1994 so I think he would be a great option for Portugal. Parreira>Dunga.

This must be a hell of a joke!
Queiroz might be an ultra-defensive coach etc.
But to take away his set earnings because he was defending his players time of rest?
This is another pointless battle that will serve no purpose except further demoralize the Selecao.
When is this pathetic folklore approach going to end?
Don't fire the guy just get him to take on experienced help if he continues to falter. But to use a pathetic witch hunt approach is just painful to watch!
Dunga?

Dunga, is worse than CQ! leaving out Ronaldinho for the wc had some justification, however leaving off Pato and David Luiz is crazy. I was happy to see those players left home at the wc cuz they were in our group. But CQ @ the world cup was too defensive as a coach and as a result we were not playing "Portuguese Football" especially vs. Spain it seemed he decided Switzerland beat Spain playing that way and was going to do the same. Additionally with the exception for the North Korea game when we needed a trump card pulled from the bench in crunch situations all CQ subs did not contribute anything positive.

Despite this I'm very thankful for CQ having faith in Eduardo and Contrao,

In conclusion Portugal are not going to win the upcoming Euros with CQ in charge. But all this fuss over spilled milk is unwarranted. Just fire him and get get a new coach!

O'Neill could be interesting seeing how he used Young and Milner @ Villa with Agbonlahor and Hesky/Carew and was mostly successful and I'm sure you all would agree with me right now Portugal's NT with Nani, Ronaldo, Danny and Almeida are better than those comparable players he had @ Villa. Damn, I'm sure if O'Neill had the Portuguese NT in the EPL he could win the league. (Ok, maybe I'm getting carried away, but I'm sure he would)

If Carlos does go, Portugal has no other choice than to spring for a foreigner. Hopefully we go topshelf and get someone like Hidiink, but I want a Portuguese coach to coach Portugal. Jorge Jesus would be a perfect fit since he would have us playing some brilliant attacking football.

Hey David, i dont know if you have been hiding under a rock lately, but now a days in soccer... contracts mean NOTHING. you sign big contracts to ward off big clubs from signing you and then you get an out of thjis world offer, what happens??? boom, you are sold!!! so i agree with everyone here... Fire idiot CQ and go get a new coach... i have 4 in mind... Scolari again, Lippi, Luis Aragones, or Co Adriaanse.

The FPF wants a coach that speaks the language. Dunga would be a perfect match for our team. Reason we had the best defense going into the world cup and conceded 1 goal in 4 matches. Dunga will establish a attacking minded midfield that will SUPPORT Ronaldo. He is an amazing player but cannot do everything himself. Another choice that sound a little ridicules but Martin O Neal or
Trappotini would be my three choices.

thats right we played the top two teams and only gave up one goal it was the lack of talent in the middle of the pitch that cost them the world cup the defence was great but the midfield couldn't hold on to the ball long enough to get the attackers going i want to see who CQ puts in the playmaker and holding roles he needs to rebuild the midfield and also i would like to see them try playing in a 442 or a 451 instead of a 433 i love the 433 but you need a well drilled club team to get the most out of it and you just don't get that kind of time on the national teams plus if you play 451 its harder for a team like spain to play tiki taka in the midfield plus our point of attack can come from anywhere catching the defence off balance

i didn't like Queiroz' strategy at the WC either but let's face reality.... aside from CR and Nani, Portugal doesn't possess enough players with offensive creativity at the moment in order to play a more attacking game.... Portuguese club teams prefer to use foreigners rather than give the home-grown talent a chance to develop and maybe become future National squad players.... i think it's time to start looking elsewhere for blame on Portugal's failures lately....
O'Neill might work as a replacement.

Scolari as far as I know was in charge of some ukranian club last season and at th end of season decided not to return. I remember seeing something that said Scolari was heading to POrtugal after his son finished his studies and he would take some off time. BUt he did want to return to coaching and he said clubs were still interested. He didn't say anything about international coach but this article was from last year. Thing about scolari the guy had great passion and it carried to the players, but he always moaned and groaned about our small talent pool compared to brasils. And he wasn't best tactician either. Speaking of passion remember when he tried layibg out that serbian player in 08 qualfier. A funny moment looking back. I'll take Scolari over the other mentioned brasilia alberto perreira.

I think he needs one more chance. The national team still has plenty of talent to compete with the spains and germanys if they use it right. We just need to find some central midfielders and a striker. I think ruben micheal and dannny will blossom into good CM's, and we have many young strikers like orlando sa, yannick djalo, joao silva, and ukra. We should be able to get maximum points, but we should at least win six games or he's gone

So how would you all deal with the matter?

I'd love to know. If you intend to reply to this then reply by saying who you'd replace him with, then say why this coach would be better than Queiroz. If you mention any coach that is under contract right now then you have to explain how they will break contract.

Queiroz is tacticaly naive for all of his years in the game, and is far from a motivator. He lost the dressing room and it is obvious that he needs to go and damn quickly otherwise the NT will have a hard time in qualifying for 2012.

It is obvious that the federation are clutching at straws with the allegations of improper behaviour in order to save paying him compensation, when in fact they should just get rid of him for incompetance.

The fedration should also look to themselves and accept blame for appointing him in the first place, after all even a blind man can see by his record that he is best suited to being a training ground coach and should not be placed in charge of anything other than a tin cup in his hand as his role in life is to be the organ grinders monkey.

The federation should also hang their heads in shame for the anti dopng fiasco which resulted in players being woken, when the dope testers could have waited a few hours to get the same results from the players when they were awake and before breakfast.

As a mid term appointment i hope that they ( the federation) have already approached and gained agreement with Aragones for him to take over on a 2 year rolling contract.

Just get rid of Queiroz, pay him of if need be and move on with a little dignity.

mourinho claims that he wont coach us until he is in his 60's. As mdot said, jj will be at benfica for a couple of years. Domingos Paciencia and Andre Vilas Boas are too young so I think it would be bet if we got a foreign coach, especially a coach who speaks a language similar to portuguese so they can adapt well. Therefore, I think Luis Aragones would be a great short term coach.

about the federation and the way this has been handled. It doesn't reflect well on the fed. For us the fans it's easy to say give him early qualifiers and if team falters then fire him. But we all know that money then comes into play. If madail does give him early qualifiers and team fails then they could fire queiroz but would have to buy out his contract. They don't want to have to do that plain and simple. So of course there are probably members inside fpf who are saying listen madail we have chance to get rid of him and without paying compensation so this is the time. But mdot you are right queiroz had a designed routine for the players and anti doping need to respect wishes of the coach especially since this was in prep for world cup. Be interested to see how this all plays out

I'm not a big fan of CQ and I wouldn't complain if he got fired but the way the Federation is going about this is a disgrace. They are not trying to fire him based on his performance. They are attacking a Portuguese coach on his honor/character when what the anti-doping authority did was wrong.

They shouldn't have the right to interfere with the players training. There is plenty of time to take a blood/urine test. Why do they have to do it when the players are supposed to be sleeping? The Federation is sending out a statement that they will not honor contracts with coaches, this does not look good on our country.

In this case I’ll back CQ. I don’t even mind watching what he does in the first couple of games since we don’t have a quality replacement at the moment. JJ will be with Benfica for another 1 to 2 years, and Mou is with Real for 2 to 3 years.

I mean is a 65 page document on queiroz really necessary. Everyone wants a timely decision but his lawyers present fpf 65 pages. Lol hope we have decision by friday or at least by weekend. In all seriousness I just don't know if our players still believe in queiroz as coach. I mean mourinho comes out and says atmosphere was never great and then pepe literally day or 2 later says mourinho was right, plus players like danny, complaining about being played out position. I don't think players have faith in his tactics or his motivational skills. Since from the outside that's how it seems then we got to let him go. We could risk having a toxic environment for the qualifiers which no good. Hopefully best decision is made and by early next week we hear that luis arragones is next coach. Instant credibility, handled torres well when he wasn't playong well in euro 08 and knows what it takes to compete with likes of spain, germany, italys of the football world

For this issue to get where it's at now, this is a disgrace for the portuguese national team. I would fire CQ just for what he did at the WC. We need change on national team. Senior players slready disrespected him at the WC. Like I previously read on here, if those 2 games in sept aren't WON (6pts) then he needs to get fired. We don't need a repeat of the WC qualifiers.
