Official: Simao retires from national team

Forward says good-bye after 15 years of service

Simao20080821.jpgPortugal has lost one of its most dedicated servants in Simao Sabrosa. The player has officially communicated to the FPF in an open letter that he will no longer lace up for the national team.

The news comes as a shock as Simao never hinted at international retirement, but the player has admitted that it was through "a period of profound reflection" that he came to his decision, which was based on "personal motives."

Simao has represented Portugal since the age of 15, winning the U16 European Championships as a promising youth player. Since then, the former Sporting and Benfica winger played a big role in helping his country to the runners-up spot in the 2004 European Championships and fourth place in the 2006 World Cup.

The 30-year-old leaves the national team programme with "tremendous honour" and "is extremely proud for have taken part in extraordinary teams that have earned various victories in this world of football."

Simao will be missed due to his talent and experience and the way he has conducted himself at all times, never getting involved in controversies. He admits that he will continue to follow the exploits of the national team "with friendliness," and thanks all the players, coaches, and everyone he has encountered in the Seleccao for all of his success.

Highly skilled , and you can tell he was so dedicated to the success of the NT . He often led the team with those attacking runs along the sidelines, and defended well like a true soldier. I just can't help but think it was too early and I just cant help but point the finger at CQ for this.
One positive note .....He will be even better for Athletico this year.
Cheers !!! Simao.

You can all say Nani, Ronaldo, whoever has more speed and skill then Simao but when it comes to the way he handled situations and respect he showed for the game, Simao is on Figo's level. Honestly now, this team is a group of clowns with Carlos Queiroz (the head clown). It lacks maturity and has no real captain. Only Carvalho is worthy of such a spot. And like someone else said, If the great players on this team dont change their act, they wont make an impact with their whining and crying. I'm also sick of watching this type of Portugal.

And who was the idiot who brought up Quaresma on this topic? This is about Simao - go talk elsewhere. Simao was one of my favorite players and I'm glad to have watched him for Portugal since 2004.

Obrigado Simao for all the years and we'll definitely miss you.
Thank you Simao but...

At 30years old, I think that's a bit too young to retire from International team. But thank you for all you have done for Portugal.

Ever since I started watching football and following the Portuguese national squad some 15 years ago (I was 4 years old), there are only a solid few Portuguese players who have constantly shown maturity, skill, vision and extreme passion for the game. One of them being Simao. (Figo, Rui Costa and Deco being the other three)
What an incredible player he's proven himself to be over the years! It's very sad to hear of this news, but I wish him the best of luck in his future and career with Atletico Madrid. Hopefully he decides to come back and play for us again, because he will truly be missed on the pitch.
Obrigado Simao!

Your all morons talking about Quaresma in this topic, its about Simao a champion of Portuguese soccer.

You are one of Benficas favourite sons, one of portugals top players and represented us perfectly during our golden generation.

Simao you are a star and what a footballer should be, goodluck with the rest of your playing career.

its time for portugal to go for gold. Simao was the true captain of this team, but now with him gone, its time for the youngsters to start stepping up, and i mean verela and quaresma. yes quaresma isnt "young" any longer, but this man is killing it right now. yes its the turkish league and yes they havent played any good teams, but they are smashing teams in the EL. so i say give him a shot, his cofidence is back, and the PORTO quaresma is soon to be, but better !

I just seen Simao playing for Atletico vs Inter..He was tremendous to watch. And he looked skinny too.
Maybe he'll change his mind before the Euros start (like Figo did in 2006).
Maybe if they get rid of Queiroz he will come back into the squad. I still think he has something to offer to the NT. Whether he will deal with those personal things and come back nobody knows.

If he doesn't..well I believe that he was really underrated, especially over the last two years. While Ronaldo was crying and complaining, Simao was just getting on with it and taking us to the play offs (not on his own, I know, but you get my point).
Quaresma

Quaresma blows! If Makukula was the top player in that league and got zero credit or even a shot at the national team you can kiss Quaresma good bye. These Porto fans a jokes making fun of Simao and then talk like Quaresma has done anything. You guys crack me up. I hope Sporting meet you clowns in the EL and kick you out of Europe in style.

Ricardo Quaresma isnt a flop he is the best winger Portugal Has at the moment Quaresma has recently showed that he has the ability to score with that outside of the right foot, He has the ability to put in incredible crosses into the box too. QUaresma is the best player

The thing is Simao is a legend to Portuguese football where Quaresma isn't.

People need to appreciate his hard work for the national team and these anti's need to calm down. Simao is already a UEFA SuperCup winner assisting Aguero. Let's no forget his assist for Postiga in the Euro 2004 against England I will never forget that about Simao. Now it's time for players like Nani and Varela to step up!

Obrigado Simao!

Jason is spot on regarding Quaresma, it's time to let go and give up on him. Nani is certainly better, and works hard.

simao was a great nt player. he did great things. i think if simao didnt get hurt back in 2002 wc nt would have made at least to semis. but now he is aging. he is not fast enough anymore but very good in passing. lets c how the nt do without him.

Not much to comment except I completely agree with Jason on Quaresma. Really cannot comprehend why people on these boards constantly ask for his inclusion. He was a young player with promise that never even remotely lived up to the hype. As conceited as Ronaldo without the skill and work ethic
He is among the portuguese legend.

It seems like it’s always the same Porto fans on here trying to down play how much of an impact Simao had for Portugal because he played for Benfica.

He was the top goal scorer for Portugal in qualifying and without him we would have never qualified. He’s been one of the most consistent players that always added value. In addition he was one of the last players that showed the true class the golden generation had. Most of the kids we have nowadays are brats and barely show the level of respect needed to wear a national shirt. We only have to look at the likes of Ronaldo, Quaresma, and Veloso to see how childish these kids are.

I’m hoping they grow a set and start acting like the Rui Costa’s and Figo’s of the past because we are losing a lot of respect and I'm sick of watching them sit on the ground when they lose the ball.
Thank you and goodbye

He did this to open up opportunities for Nani and Varela who he knows are incredibly talented. Simao was good but Nani and Varela are way more powerful and deadly attacking players. Both Nani and Varela CHANGE/WIN games, so the future is bright! Queiroz will realize finally that he has to be brave and Nani and Varela will realize that they have to seize the moment! Forca Portugal!

Simao was a great player for Portugal, to bad he got injured in the world cup 2002. Since then we was never able to to be in the starting 11, due to names like Figo, Ronaldo and now Nani. Even if he wasn't a starter in his earlier years, he always gave his all and scored important goals for Portugal. He will be missed a great player for Portugal.

Never saw this news coming...I'm completely shocked that Simao has retired from the NT...He was never the big time or star player for Portugal, but he was a solid one to have on a team...Portugal will truly miss his talent and experience...Thank you for the memories Simao...BTW I think this move was done because Carlos Failroz is still coach...I bet any money if Queeroz wasn't still around then Simao would've never come out with this story

since Deco and Simao both left, the team has some thinking to do to fill the positions... id say Miguel Veloso fill in for Deco, in the wing, Nani can be a full time player, and as a sub..... maybe quaresma????? if he has a good year with becsiktas or whatever the name... id consider him, but id only give him one chance in 2 games and if he doesnt show anything...boot him out, bring a youth in...helder barbosa.....ukra from the u21s...
Quaresma who?

Jason/Montreal/Canada
Thanks Simao, you were never a game changer for Portugal, but you were a solid dependable player and created opportunities on the field. His experience will be missed at this point in time especially...

As for this constant talk about ?Quaresma?

Quaresma is a flop, a has been, maybe even a never was, so people please get over it!!!

Reality check, Quaresma showed all the promise of a CR7, however, he's lazy, lazy and incredibly selfish.

He will only ever be good in an under par league with under par opposition.

What has he ever done? Besides one great season in Porto, he has done nothing! I will remind you that one season he was playing for that ultra strict dutch coach, who benched him a good part of the 1st half of that season due to poor work ethic, and bad attitude.

He has never been able to win himself a position on any great team even though he has all this talent...

Barcelona... flop!
Inter... flop!
Chelsea... flop!
Inter again... flop!

May I remind you the great Jose Mourinho went to get Quaresma himself, and even he gave up on him.

Sure he looks good in whatever god forsaken league he plays at now, and sure he'll have a great game when he comes up against a Portuguese team in European play, but please, I only want the best on our national team, and Quaresma has shown us that he is far from that.

Nani, is without question our new left wing, CR7 the right, now let's identify a couple others to back them up, or challenge for a spot, but please, please, please... stop fantasizing about Quaresma... All he has proven is that he will always be a could have been!
Thank You

One of the top players Portugal has produced. At the moment he is the 8th most successful goal scorer for our national team and likely to stay there for a very long time. I'm hoping he comes back to our liga for the last couple years of his career.

Great Professional But Time to Retire

Great professional and dedicated servant for country due all full honor. A solid player but not a great impact player who plays best when he is a secondary option but not a main option. The last few years the national team decline required impact performances from Simao and he is not that type of player -- it is not his fault. He is better as a back up from the bench to come in for the last 10-15 minutes of a game.

I think his retirement will open up spots for Nani (no more Nani vs Simao debate), Varela, and even the underachieving Quaresma has a shot. It is time to introduce changes and this retirement is a sign of the changing of the guard.
Thank you and this opens the door

Thank you to Simao for his service to the seleccao and even though he never had terrific pace, he kept possesion well was able to settle the pace of the game in Portugals favor and at times he he was able to play nice balls in and score against an average oppenent every now and again in a crucial spot.

Now the future for the wings is clear Ronaldo, Nani, Varela and this now opens a big door for Quaresma so we will see in the near future.
