Portugal squad named: Moutinho returns, Silvio & Nuno Coelho handed call-up

20-man group named

The Portuguese Federation has announced the squad that will take part in the opening two qualifiers for the 2012 European Championships against Cyprus and Norway.

The most notable recalls to the Seleccao ranks are those of midfielders Joao Moutinho and Manuel Fernandes, both of whom were not included in Carlos Queiroz’s World Cup squad, and Silvestre Varela, who missed the tournament in South Africa through injury.

There is also a first call-up for Braga defender Silvio, who is rewarded for his excellent performances against Sevilla in the Champions League play-offs, while uncapped Sporting stopper Nuno Coelho also earns a place in the 20-man party.

Ricardo Quaresma’s bright start to life in Turkey has not been enough to earn him a place in the initial squad, but the winger joins Paulo Machado of Toulouse and Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patricio as one of three standby options required under new UEFA rules.

Real Madrid’s Pepe and Duda of Malaga, both currently out with injuries, are excluded, while Paulo Ferreira, Pedro Mendes, Ruben Amorim, Ricardo Costa and Daniel Fernandes all join the retired Deco and Simao Sabrosa in dropping out.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Eduardo (Génoa) & Beto (FC Porto)

Defenders: Rolando (FC Porto), Miguel (Valência), Ricardo Carvalho (Real Madrid), Bruno Alves (Zenit), Nuno André Coelho (Sporting), Fábio Coentrão (Benfica) & Sílvio (Sp. Braga)

Midfielders: Miguel Veloso (Génoa), João Moutinho (FC Porto) Manuel Fernandes (Valência), Raul Meireles (Liverpool) & Tiago (At. Madrid)

Forwards: Varela (FC Porto), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Danny (Zenit), Liedson (Sporting), Nani (Man Utd) & Hugo Almeida (Werder Bremen)

On standby: Rui Patrício (Sporting), Paulo Machado (Toulouse) & Ricardo Quaresma (Besiktas).

Danny dosent play as a Striker or a winger, he plays attacking Mid number 10 style, carlos queiroz best use him in that postion. But you know how hes like putting players in different postions!
Hes Zenits best player for sure.

What about me ? I 'm so glad someone said my name . This is the highlight of my life since winning the uefa cup with Porto .boy they are smart they used me too steal money from England . And Scolari said the only reason i made it to the national team was so he could put me in against England it was his way of telling them ha ha b@tch@s NANA BOO BOO i'm better than you . P.S has anyone seen Capucho lately

Seeing as Ronaldo, Varela, Bosingwa and Pepe are out this is what my starting lineup would look like:

Nani Danny Quaresma

Veloso Meireles Moutinho

Coentrão Alves Carvalho Miguel

Eduardo

(Not really sure about Tiago or Veloso)
Quaresma is not worthy....yet.

He hasn't shown consistency and that is why Mourinho did involve him in most of the games. He hasn't done much..he needs to get his form back together.

Danny

Danny wasn't able to play in his best position in the world cup. We should let him play as the playmaker behind the striker where he does a fantastic job for Zenit.
Danny...?

Matthew
Seems like a pretty decent squad list, with the exception of Danny being included.
I honestly have not seen much positive effects of this man being on the Portuguese squad..especially in the World Cup. There are definitely better, more effective choices for the FPF to choose from. It's just a little disappointing in my opinion, and now with this "Interim" coach in charge and Queiroz banned for 6 months, who knows what's going to happen?

Good luck Portugal. And give em' hell Coentrao.
Liedson, Quaresma

Liedson is a good option to come off the bench. Remember that without him we would not have even been in the World Cup.

As for Cigano, I'd like to see him on the National team again and it's good to see him doing well at Besiktas. However, doing well in the Turkish or Portuguese leagues is not the same as in Spain or Italy etc. I think he needs to play against some tougher teams before we can really judge him.
Silvio

jon/usa
Silvio is a very good fullback. He is just as comfortable on the left as he is on the right. He was the man of the match in the first leg against Sevilla and he had an excellent game in the away leg too. If you see the article on Braga's win over Maritimo, you can clearly see that he has a very good shot as well.

I cannot believe that Danny is still getting into the squad, ahead of Ricardo Quaresma!!! Have you ever seen a more innefective player than Danny was at the world cup? While on the other hand, i firmly believe that Quaresma would have had an impact on our performances at South Africa..he would've at least made us exciting to watch! We need that "fantasia futebol" back in the selecao...and Ronaldo is just not providing it...so that leaves Quaresma, who simply has to be in the squad in my mind, particularly with Simao now retired! Same goes for Moutinho...who I still cant believe was left out of the World Cup, that was crazy and our midfield really suffered. I believe had Moutinho been on the pitch, Spain would not have dominated possetion as much as they did against us, and we would've had a much better chance in that match. Mistakes to learn from....!!!!

Of course Ronaldo misses more qualifiers this guy stinks for his country and I don't miss him.

We have other players that can perform for example Nani this guy will lead us to Euro 2012 not Ronaldo.

I was also wondering why Paulo Machado didn't get called up alongside Joao Pereira. What about this Silvio guy is he good I haven't seen him play so can't comment on him.

Quaresma does deserve a shot and the Cyprus game will be great for him to prove him self hopefully he scores or makes an assist.

This would be my starting line up..

Eduardo
Silvio,Carvalho,Alves,Coentrao

Moutinho,Fernandes,Raul Meireles

Nani,Almeida,Quaresma

basically a 4-3-3.

Forca Portugal lets not make this a nightmare.....

A lot of people here are going on about how Quaresma's recent hot streak in portugal doesn't mean he'll manage well with the national squad. Personally, I agree that it doesn't NECESSARILY mean that; however, I have to say that I think the game against Cyprus should be easy enough to give us the breathing space to test him out.
Quaresma. Liedson?

Felipe/England London
Quaresma deserves a call up now, hes been on form for beskitas and scoring great goals as well. I think C.Ronaldo is injured (apparently :/) so he can start on the wing with Nani on the other.
Why did liedson get picked again hes not good enough to play for Portugal!
Nani

I think he could be the star of the 2012 qualifiers.

Ronaldo continues to underpeform for the seleccao for reasons we can debate forever, and is always heavily marked by opposing players.

Nani was very unfortunate to miss the WC but given his form in the last 8-9 months I think he could turn out to be our most important player.
HE IS THE BEST.

Portugal should line up
Eduard GK Silvio RB Carvalho CB Alves CB Coentrao LB Moutinho CM Meireles CM Nani RM/RW Varela LM/LW Danny FWD/SS/CAM Ronaldo FWD/SS/AM/LW/RW/CR7/CR9---------------------------------------This gives portugal a flexible line up and keeps Danny in the middle as a support striker/FWD/CAM/instead of on the wings where he's not so good.Right now Portugal lack a true attacking mid and an out and out striker but i believe with solid wing play and two versatile mids the Danny Ronaldo tandem can work.Plus you can change formations easily without making any subs as a 442 Nani and Varela play as right and left mids this gives us a four man midfield so we don't get the ball ping ponged around us like against spain .Or if changes need to bee made switch to 433 with Nani and Varela as wingers and Danny dropping back into the three man midfield this way rash subsitutions are not made too early . Oh yeah and if portugal's down and needs to score in a bad bad way we can go crazy with a 424 just like 1966 style.

I really like to see this guy make the national team he is seriously underated in my opinion and it makes me upset that he wasn't considered before but I would like to see him against Norway or Cyprus.

I would really like to see Manuel Fernandes back with the national team I really hope he can be a regular because we know his potential and honestly Quaresma hasn't convince me yet to deserve a call-up.

Ronaldo was injured today and may not be able to play with portugal this week so quaresma will likely take his place. Manuel Fernandes when healthy is better than Miguel Veloso in my opinion so I think that he should be given a chance. Hopefully Ronaldo, Pepe, and Bosingwa will be healthy soon.

Eduardo
Miguel Ricardo Carvalho Bruno Alves Fabio Coentrao
Manuel Fernandes
Nani Raul Meirless Danny Ronaldo
Hugo Almeida

We will have plenty of subs in the midfield. I do wish we pepe and bosingwa though. Can anyone please tell me who the interm coach is

what about the 'young great player Joao Silva of Everton???? i think makukula should be ahead of liedson and joao silva ahead of manuel fernandes...but as simao and deco retire...more doors open for more players, and this could be a good thing, if portugal finds the right fit in the mid and wing... varela...good choice... silvio...ok....but nuno coelho, errr, i dont know about that... i guess we'll see.

Will you people cut the crab already. Just because Quaresma played well in the last few games does not mean that he is the center of attraction again. We all know his abilities, how he could not sum up to the pressure at a bigger league. He still need years of developing to do. Hopefully, he can get a call-up in the second quarter of Euro qualification.

glad varela got called as well as silvio as he has impressed early on. YOu know I hope Danny gets played as CAM position as I think that's his more natural position. He has played as striker for Zenit but that's usually with another striker. All in all looking forward to who Agostinho starts and subs he uses. Can't wait to get qualifiers started on positive note.

I'm glad Silvio got called. He has been very impressive indeed. Don't know where Miguel's head at, really wish Simao came back. I like Tiago but the midfield has really lost Deco's presence. Varela/Moutinho is also deserving. I think Ricardo Quaresma deserved to be called ahead of Danny. The majority of dropped players werent good anyway and I hope Duda never comes back. Meireles not my personal fav but who else?

So the lineup is fairly youthful and cant wait for the qualifiers.

To me Portugal's biggest problem at the WC was their uninspiring play in the midfield...i just look at the roster that was named today and i feel this will continue to be a problem against great teams.. no one can really be blamed since the quality of players is just not there...
