Ronaldo out of qualifiers, Quaresma drafted in

Forward suffers early injury

Cristiano Ronaldo will be out of action for two or three weeks and will therefore miss Portugal’s opening European Championship qualifiers, according to reports from Madrid.

Ronaldo picked up an ankle knock during Real Madrid’s draw with Mallorca last night, and Spanish daily Marca says that, having been examined by the club’s medical staff, the Portuguese has been ruled out for the next two or three weeks.

Real doctor Carlos Diez has sent details of the injury, suffered to the same ankle that caused Ronaldo problems last season, to the Portuguese Football Federation, and expects Ronaldo to be withdrawn from the 20-man squad to take on Cyprus and Norway.

Seleccao interim coach Agostinho Oliveira must now decide between Ricardo Quaresma of Besiktas and Toulouse’s Paulo Machado in terms of who is drafted in, should Ronaldo’s spell on the sidelines be confirmed.

Article update:

Following confirmation of Ronaldo's withdrawal from the squad, Ricardo Quaresma has been announced as the Real Madrid man's replacement in the 20-man group. Silvestre Varela is also likely to be removed, according to various sources, with Paulo Machado of Toulouse set to step in for the FC Porto winger.

I aplogise for calling you a dumb ass I was wrong , but what you said was dumb as hell. Don't get me wrong ronaldo pissess me off a lot , but don,t say he doesn't care about portugal thats just stupid and whats Quaresma ever done for any one to say he's a better player and a better portuguese than Ronaldo. and lets forget about ronaldo beacuse we got that new Man U guy Bebe . No one even knows if he can play yet. On second thought you are a dumb ass forca portugaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal!!!!
WHY DO YOU ACT LIKE I WAS OWNED?

justin from rochester
How does this guy ED own me? All that he did is think back to 3 plays in soccer history where those guys defended and did something after they played defense. Just because you give me 3 examples in those players long careers where they played defense does not make them defensive players. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. You telling me that I was owned or that I am out of my mind is hilarious. I watch the games in and out every week I don't just go on the internet and look at highlights of plays like probably my "owners" do. I will stand by that list and would gladly add more players to it and when you tell me my list is wrong well then think what you want. I will stand by my opinion and will also stand by the fact that I think we need more attacking players on this team not defensive players. We have perhaps the best back line in the world at the least top 3. With Pepe in good shape and another midfielder that wants to stay back we can afford to attack. I am sick of losing games or drawing games to bullshiv teams with players that couldn't play 5 minutes on our seleccao. Yet these teams they are beating us and playing right with us. Maybe you like mediocrity but I don't and won't accept it...not from a country with players who start on the best teams in the world. Those days of losing or drawing against albania, hungary or malta should be over for gods sake. Who are those teams and who are those players in comparison to ours? We needed attackers against spain and other teams to win. That stupid counter attack system we tried to do was sophmoric and not what a team like ours should rely on. We have the defense now lets play some beautiful football like I think we should.

Everytime there is a topic like this, everyone always has to talk about how Ronaldo isn't doing this right and that right, blah, blah, blah. You know what I think? I think some of you would actually be foolish enough to bench him if you were the coach of Portugal! The way some of you talk, it seems like you think he is truly a disgrace or a disappointment or something. He is the current leading scorer for Portugal and IS capable of putting in mesmerizing performances IF he is used correctly. Should it be a surprise that he doesn't play well when he only gets to touch the ball 10 times/game? Does anyone here actually play football? If you do, then you would know it's pretty impossible to do much of anything when you play striker and have no midfield behind you (i.e. Portugal vs Spain).

If Ronaldo is so bad, and such a bad captain and all of that, then maybe we should bench him, right? Ok, I'll bite, so who should we get to replace him? Who? Which one of you football geniuses can name a player that will bring more to the team at his position, than Cristiano Ronaldo?.......... Yeah, that's what I thought. He's the best player on the team guys, he just needs to be used and coached correctly. Sir Alex Ferguson got the most out of him, so did Manuel Pellegrini and Scolari too for that matter.

Now, on to more pressing matters. I think it is good that Quaresma gets his foot in the door this way. No, I don't think he has earned it yet, but I think he could potentially have a lot to offer if he gets his attitude right and learns to play team football. I've been watching him every chance I get at Besiktas and he is certianly playing better and has more confidence. So, I think it's a good thing that he gets re-introduced to the international game at this level against teams like Cyprus and Norway. If he plays well, that will only boost his confidence further and that's not a bad thing at all.

Forca Sempre Portugal!!!

and i watched every game of quaresma in Bjk. he is really trying to prove himself.
i hope he will do everything he can for portugal and you all know that when he does everything he can, he is an indispensable player.

Okay yes Ronaldo is our best player but seriously, he is a douche. I think this will be a good opportunity for the team to show that they can do it without him and there not just a one man team.
Queresma is poo but he is playing well at the moment so lets give him a chance, maybe he can revive his career.
And for those of you who say the turkish league is crap, why don't you watch it before you slap them around. Their league is not far behind the other top leagues in terms of quality and there fans are absolutely nuts for their teams.

Ed just owned Adam and Justin... lol

People!!! Quaresma is playing in a league where, if both teams show up with the same color shirts, they end up playing skins vs. shirts... lol

Come on people, the only reason he went from zero to hero in 2 weeks is cuz he's playing with talentless league.

It's like having Pele return to play against 7 year olds and then proclaiming " He look everyone, he's still got it!"

This team is already completely unstable after WC2010, and with the embarrassing fiasco surrounding Carlos Queiroz and the federation, let's through the wild child of Portuguese soccer in the mix at our most vulnerable time...

Yeah!

Adam and Justin are out of their minds saying that Figo Zidane and Robben, Ribery don't defend they nuts. Out of the list that Justin made the only that does not defend is maybe villa. Luis figo started his play during interceptions in defending and turning into counter attacks please do research perfect example. Euro 2000 goal agains england started with defending. How about Zidane goal against Portugal when he takes on the whole midfield in his own half after defending. Note Ronaldo had to defend at Manchester and if you watch is early games in the NT he defended to. Q7 is the only duche bag that does not defend that is why at inter he sat on the bench watching the flies.

Dont Matter what people say C.Ronaldo is are best player, even though he fustrates and makes me scream at the TV to say pass the bloody ball and not shoot 45 yards out! Hes the one that makes are oppostion feel scared and double mark himm all the time. But then carlos queiroz shouldnt put him up front make him a winger! Then someone should tell C.Ronaldo to play more for the team while hes in the Portugal shirt. But dont be stupid by saying he should retire blaa blaa blaa!
Anyways I'm glad to see Quaresma in the squad again and he should start against Cyprus with Nani on the other wing!

I'm happy Ronaldo's out for both matches...The guy thinks he can do it all for Portugal, but sadly Portugal is not a one man team...I'm sick of seeing such a talented soccer player stinking it up for his NT...Quite frankly I think Ronaldo should go down Simao's and P.Ferreira's route and too retire from the National Team

Queiroz doesn't know how to coach Ronaldo simple as that. When Queiroz took over Ronaldo didn't score a single goal for two years until we played North Korea which was a fluky goal. He places Ronaldo at center forward against Spain in the second half when he didn't even get to touch the ball until the end of the game because Danny couldn't play wing that game. I'm getting sick of the favoritism he gives Ronaldo for giving him stupid 30-60 yard freekicks. I hate when Queiroz thinks he can do anything he wants! CR7 certainly needs to change his attitude a bit but Queiroz needs to go as well.

I think this may be a blessing in disguise he has not played well for Portugal in years. Even though he has been played out of position he is a good enough player to affect the game more. He should not have been appointed captain and this was a lazy choice by Queiroz. Personally Carvalho should have been made captain with Raul Meireles taking over the armband when Carvalho retires. It pains me to say so as a proud Portuguese but CR is the most self serving player on the planet, seems to lack class at times to his team mates and professional colleagues. Unfortunately he does not have the quality to inspire his Portugal team like a Figo or Rui Costa, he does however have a talent to throws strops like some pre madona! He tries to do it all him self, shoot from stupid angles and dribble past one to many players. He is a great player with a poor attitude, I say behave more like Figo and less like Mourinho. Sorry if this upsets people but hey this is just a Jersey boy's opinion.

Quaresma and Ronaldo are attacking minded players. Not just Figo but almost all the best attacking players don't play hardly any defense. If you want me to list them I will but I am afraid this little box I am writing in might not let me. Just a few though, Robben,Messi,David Villa,Drogba,Ribery,Nani,Zidane,Rui Costa...the list can go on forever. When I say they don't play defense I don't mean that to literally because everyone has to play some defense. What I mean is the best attacking players are just that ATTACKING PLAYERS. Leave the defending to our back line and a couple holding.defense midfielders(pepe and whoever else can fill the void. I will gladly take ronaldo and quaresma or nani or varela running at players from the wings and all over the field and create some scoring chances....chances that portugal as a whole never freaking convert. I think I would rather draw some of these opening games 3-3 then draw 1-1 or 0-0. With the defense we know we have it is not to much of a liability to have attack minded players just look at spain for the perfect blend. I don't remember xavi and iniesta or torres or villa running back and making tackles.

Even without Ronaldo Portugal will do fine. All these injuries allow the NT to try out some new blood of youthful players eager to crack into the lineup.......and let's be real here, against Cyprus and Norway (even with newer players) the full 6 points must be expected. We need to start being confident in our nation's strength and footballing value. 6 easy points regardless of who starts for the NT.
I don't understand you people. Forget Quaresma!!!

He's lazy and incredibly selfish on the field, the guy is a cancer…

Ronaldo can be selfish as well, but he works harder then anyone else on the field. If only he would stop crying every time he's knocked down he would get a lot more calls going his way.

Quaresma however is a liability on the field from start to finish. He may or may not show up, but worse he’s defensively irresponsible. If he losses the ball he won't even dream of running back, and if he gets tackled hard, he won’t cry for long, cuz he’ll me sitting on the bench with a red card for his retaliatory ways.

Listen, let Quaresma build up his confidence in Turkey (also known as bantam AA), since he can't seem to win himself a spot on any other team. If he manages to lead his Turkish team to a top 3 league finish then he should try and make his way to a league where girls and boys don't play on the same teams...

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Quaresma. I am however incredibly disappointed in Quaresma, which is a big difference.

Quaresma was supposed to compete for top dog with CR7 and he's done nothing of the sort. Let him rot in Turkey for a year until he's hungry enough to do something with this thing he's calling a career…

At this point in time we need players who want to play, improve, win and stop at nothing until their goals are met. In my opinion Quaresma is still too much of a gamble, especially on the international stage. He needs to play well in more then just 2-3 Turkish games before I would play him on my team.

My Selecao could do better, my Selecao should!

ronaldo never showed up because our coach quieroz is totally inept on how to use him, he makes ronaldo play as striker which ronaldo hates to do, you have to play him as a roaming winger where he has a CHOICE where to go. Ronaldo cant do nothing when he cant get the ball, and having him that far up made it harder and made his talent go to waste

good points re mystery of his injury, every time theirs qualifying games, hes abscent...this is a little odd, but I could be wrong. Could be a serious injury, Id like to see Quaresma called up, he has been blowing up in the Turkish league...Ronaldo to my memory hasnt done squat for the Seleccao, probably a blessing in disguise..dont misquote me, hes one, if not the best player in the world, but lets see how they do without him...just a thought..
