Carlos Queiroz slapped with six-month ban

Portugal coach hit with new suspension

Carlos QueirozSeleccao coach Carlos Queiroz has been hit with a suspension of six months, on top of the one-month ban he is currently serving. Queiroz said he will be appealing against the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and may also take the matter to FIFA.

The further suspension has been imposed by the Portuguese Anti-Doping Authority after the coach was deemed to have hindered their work during the pre World Cup training camp in Covilha.

Two weeks ago Queiroz was suspended for one month and fined 1000 euros by the Portuguese Football Federation for using improper language during the same incident. It is unclear whether this latest punishment, meted out by a different entity, will be imposed concurrently or will lead to a total of seven months of inactivity.

In any event, should the suspension stand Carlos Queiroz will miss half of the qualifying campaign for the 2012 European Championships, which must raise serious doubts as to whether or not the former Manchester United assistant will stay on as Portugal coach.

However, Queiroz does not intend to go without a fight. The 57-year-old reacted immediately to the news, saying he would be appealing against the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and lamenting the fact that once again he learned of his punishment through the media rather than through official channels.

Queiroz also said he may take the matter to “other international entities”, which has been interpreted as a possible complaint to FIFA.

The controversy paints a far from ideal backdrop to Portugal’s opening European Championship games. The Seleccao welcome Cyprus to Guimaraes on Friday and travel to Norway four days later, with interim coach Agostinho Oliveira in charge.

You have the conditions, the desire and the honour to continue...But you have no respect from the players and you have no tactical sense. I have the passion and the will but the sense enough to know that I'm just not capable of coaching at the world cup level.
bad news

This isn't good at all. I think with all of this controversy going on and Ronaldo being out, we will struggle against the likes of Cyprus and especially Norway. We need to get all 6 points against these guys so we're in good shape for when we play against Denmark later on.

The FPF really needs to just get rid of him. How they think it is wise to keep an interim coach for half a season and presumably, bring him back into the fold after that, is completely beyond me. I hope CQ will just quit because he has to realize this is really going to hurt the team.

We're going to need big performances from everyone to make up for all of the players lost through injury, and now they're going to have to get through all of this drama too. It's stupid.....

Joao Moutinho, Quaresma, and others are going to have to come back to the international game in a big way if we are to have any success in these opening matches of Euro 2012 qualification.

GET IT RIGHT FPF!!!!!!

The FPF want CQ to quit thats why they extended the suspension and im sure he will quit if he doesn't succeed on reducing the suspension but it is stupid how the FPF are putting Portugals hopes of qualifying for the Euro in an assistant managers hands.

Im afraid for Portugal I feel we will miss out come 2012.
Great Suggestions

I think some of you gentlemen have it all mixed up.

You're all blaming the Fed and definitely they have some to be blamed.. but they only gave him a token one month suspension because Madail wants to keep his man.

The Anti-Doping agency is run by the Portuguese government to track all sport including Olympic sports.. the IOC is pretty strict about Anti-Doping and has their own world gestapo agency that rules with an iron fist.

Taking Dan's lead Failroz or as I prefer to call him Queer-Eyes (because his eyes don't see the game of football straight) has himself to blame.

His swollen stubborn & conceited head (that gets him into spats with reporters and squad members) led him to believe he was too big for these inspectors.

These rules are put into place and enforced in a manner set-up by the World Doping Agency, failure to comply is dealt with harshly world wide.

Now I know Portuguese politicians are most definitely trying to interfere with a FPF that is doing a poor job, and trying to force Failroz out.. but the world football governing bodies have huge issues with governments interfering with their systems.

So if Failroz can prove it, then they could face some harsh penalties. Togo recently faced repercussions from both their Confed and FIFA for their meddling (even when players lives were at stake).

Personally I want Failroz out.. and have wanted it from his hire.. (having failed twice with the Nat he should've never got a third crack) I still think they should handle this in the proper fashion. My suggestion would be to sack him or demote him to U21's where he actually has a winning record. If they demote him, he might just quit and make their lives easier.

Unlike Rob I disagree with Portuguese management as they usually are just puppets and the politics always mess with the performance of the squad. There is only one Portuguese Manager at present that could handle the role.. and we know he ain't coming, yet.

Now we certainly have some up and comers but none of those are ready.

Paciencia is excellent but still needs seasoning..

JJ has lousy player selection and does not like Eduardo.. his goalkeeper selections are laughable, and I am a Benfica fan.. he personally called for Roberto...lol

Ferreira is a middling manager albeit consistent but his big game record outside of Portugal lacks quality. Porto's quality team helped him immensely.

Now young guns like Figo, Sousa, Costa still need to prove themselves, although the Pepe G Barcelona experiment paid great dividends, so might be worth a shot.

Brazilians are similar to Portuguese managers and lack the technical defensive play, and set piece excellence that is necessary to take this team to the next level. Although Dunga might fit the bill and is available.

I would suggest in the absence of Hiddink, Arragones, an Italian, German, or a successful manager that has been out of the game for a bit Rjykaard (sp?).

When hired their interpreters should be sent for a leisurely bus cruise through the rebel infested areas of Angola so that any possible communication link from the federation to the new team manager is severed.. literally (Kidding, no interpreters were harmed in the making of this post).

Overall too many good suggestions to list. Nice to see the passion.

this is totally stupid. too much of the spot light bs. i dont understand why the antidope testers didnt come later to take the test. i think what happen is that queiroz and the docs negotiated something for skiping the blood tests. than, fpf found out from rumors., i could be wrong about this. but this antidoping thing doesnt make any sense to me.
Ridiculous

This is just insane. This will have a major impact on the team, and even when he does return the atmosphere wouldn't be friendly. The FPF should have just sacked him after the world cup itself instead of finding a way to lure him to resign. Queiroz is a very broad-minded man and wouldn't give up so easily, so they are just making matters worse.
Make a decision!!!

Yeah i agree, they have to sack him now, simple as that, before this fiasco starts affecting the performances of the national team. There's some good foreign candidates out there (lets not forget the most succesful 6 years in our history were with a foreign coach!!): Lippi, Carlos Alberto Perreira, Rijkaard, Sven Goran Eriksson, just to name four....as far as Portuguese coaches, what about Peseiro? He had a great season with Sporting in 04/05 when they narrowly missed out on the league to Benfica and also reached the UEFA cup final. Or perhaps a return of Humberto Coelho, i still think the best Portugal team i've seen was our fabulous Euro 2000 team under Coelho. Things can only get better i think...
soooo good

FPF are just as stupid as Failroz...They brought in a failure of a coach and now their trying to do everything they can to make him crack so they don't pay the money Queeroz owes...Our NT has been falling down for a while now, but now things are just getting crazy...I mean we got FPF doing stupid things, Failroz antics in every aspect of Futebol is bringing the team down, players retiring, players faking injuries

He should never have been appointed, there were good Portuguese managers that should have been given the chance i.e J/Ferreira (now ex Porto manager), J/Jesus or P/Sousa. The FPF went for the easy, lazy and most convenient choice. The world cup qualifiers and world cup it self proved he does not know how to manage a team and should not be trusted to do so, he is a decent assistant at best. Portugal v Spain as prime example, most players looked confused and did not know what tactics he was trying to employ after the subs came on. The FPF could have used him as an assistant if they were brave enough to appoint someone like Sousa. To summarize the FPF are amateurs and are happy to live in Spain's and Brazil's shadows, that way there is no high expectations required from them or the team!

I've always given CQ a hard time, but I'm going to have to defend him on this one. The initial charges were silly to begin with and now a 7 month ban? We're beginning to look like a dysfunctional African nation.

If you want to fire the guy, pay up and let him go. If you can't pay up, suck it up and honor his contract. I hope he sues the FPF for whatever they owe him and exposes their incompetence. Maybe then we can get some real professionals running the seleccao who are focused on winning and not on silly political battles and an asinine insistence on having a Portuguese coach.
They cant....

They can´t sack him cause they dont have the money 2 do so....they need 2 compensate him in 3 500 000 €, if they do. So they trying 2 make him resign or find (or make up) something to "justify" his dismissal.
Queiroz

You see thats the thing. They can't get rid of Queiroz because the FPF doesn't want to pay Queiroz compensation for being fired earlier then when his contract expires. There using this way so as to maybe try to get him to resign so they don't have to pay him anything.

How is this helping our National team?????? Maybe we should re-organize FPF...apparently these old geese have no common sense!

Whats the point giving such a lengthy ban, when it will probably effect are Portugal team in the euro qualifiers. They might as well sack him. He aint good enough anyways to be manager for Portugal, he can stick to developing youth!
We need a manager with experience, if the Portugal is going to go forward.

I would rather have a Portuguese coach, but who would it be? Jose Mourinho won't coach us until he's old. The best coaches in Portugal are not going to leave their clubs. So I don't really see a problem with a foreign coach at the moment.

just get rid of him. Enough with these games of trying to get him to quit and not having to pay him. This isn't good for the good of the seleccao. HIre Aragones or JOse MAnuel or a BRasilian if so but this is beyond insane at this point. What is the mentalitiy with the anti doping and FPF. We need to get this resolved. Stop treating Queiroz like some infant and just give him his walking papers and his money. We are looking worse than the FRench at this point

I'd rather see an average Portuguese manager take over, than sell our souls for an above-average Spanish one. Is it really that impossible to find a decent Portuguese coach that we need a Spanish one to take charge? Over the last decade, one of Portugal's main exports has been MANAGERS, and yet there's still talk of a foreign takeover. We are not a crap football nation that NEEDS foreigners to come in and coach. This idea is as stupid as Capello to England.

This is a bunch of crap the fpf are jerking everyone around it seems like their trying to give Agoustinho the job without really giving him the job if portugal blows the opening qualifiers look for the ban to be reduced , does any one know if somthing like this has ever been done , it's one thing to be suspended by fifa or uefa but by your own federation ? I hope CQ tells them to F#$! OFF and takes them to court for his money after losing a coach and money maybe the right heads will roll.
Wtf

This is the most stupidest thing i've heard. So now the team will have no coach for half a years worth of qualifiers and we thought CQ was terrible well look at these dumbasses working for the FPF. All these clowns should be fired with Queiroz and replaced with someone who know how to handle matters properly. This is an embarassment and is only making matters worse.. a team trying to qualify without a coach.
what exactly did he let happen?

With this ban, Queiroz would miss exactly half of the Euro 2012 qualifying matches. The logical decision would be to just terminate his contract and replace him. I don't think many Portuguese fans would cry at the thought of that...

Send this guy home packing, please. The team did not benefit from him while he was head coach and sending him away for 7 months to return and start coaching again, is only going to hurt the team. The second he was banned changes were made and the correct players were beginning to be called up, to take upon the challenge of playing at an international level. Positive progress seemed to be the direction for Portugal, but having this asshole come back to coach a team with the potential to win trophies is not going in the right direction. The worst coaches are assigned to coach national teams because the best are hired by great clubs, but this guy is so bad i don't think he could win a U12 division league with the Spanish national team, let alone Portugal.
WTF?!?!?!?!

This is all destroying the morale of the seleccao. Not qualifying would be a disaster so let's just sign Luis Aragones or any other good coach as a short term solution.
