Chaotic Seleccao held to 8-goal draw

Portugal 4-4 Cyprus

Euro 2012Portugal's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign got off to a poor start with a remarkable 4-4 draw at home to Cyprus. The hosts twice went behind early on as the usually solid back line were all at sea against the counter-attacking Cypriots.

Portugal were level by half time and seemed to have ensured victory with a strong second-half display, but more disastrous defending saw Cyprus avoid defeat against Portugal for the first time in 9 attempts.

Portuguese fans voted with their feet in reaction to the current farcical situation involving Carlos Queiroz and the FPF that sees the national team without a head coach for anything up to seven months. A disappointing crowd of just 10,000 turned up at the Dom Afonso Henriques Stadium in Guimaraes to watch the Seleccao embark on a road they hope will lead to Poland and Ukraine and a place at the 2012 European Championships.

Defence goes AWOL

Those who came out to support their team certainly can’t complain about any lack of entertainment or goals. Even Carlos Queiroz’s fiercest critics have praised the way the coach organised a watertight defence, but the back four were unrecognisable tonight as sloppy play was taken full advantage of by the well-drilled Cypriot counter-attacks.

Twice in the first ten minutes lightning raids from the visitors combined with poor defending from first Miguel and Alves, then Meireles resulted in goals for Cyprus through Anoleftis and Konstantinou. Incredibly, in just ten minutes of a home match against Cyprus, Portugal had conceded more goals than during the whole of the South Africa World Cup.

A fine Hugo Almeida header from an accurate Nani cross sandwiched the two strikes, and on 29 minutes new Liverpool signing Meireles made up for his crass mistake by firing into the net from long range, although Cypriot goalkeeper Giorgallidis will feel he should have done better.

Some shoddy passing from Fernandes and Alves summed up a disorganised first-half display from Portugal which only served to further increase the confidence of their enterprising but clearly limited opponents. Nevertheless, the Seleccao were unlucky not to go into the break in the lead as just before the interval an Almeida header was cleared off the line and Giorgallidis produced a wonderful diving save to deny Coentrao.

Quaresma on fire

Portugal improved significantly after the break. Quaresma had shown flashes of his very particular brand of skills in the first half, and he proved a thorn in the side of Cyprus in the second 45 minutes. The Besiktas man is playing with confidence again and he was unlucky that a series of mesmerising runs, dangerous crosses and threatening shots were not rewarded with any tangible results.

Danny put Portugal into the lead for the first time on 50 minutes, heading in Coentrao’s hooked cross, but Cyprus were soon level again as more poor defending from both centre-backs allowed Okkas to run clean through on goal and slide the ball past the exposed Eduardo.

Manuel Fernandes, who improved significantly as the match wore on, then scored the goal of the night, smashing in a pile-driver from 20 yards. The spectacular strike triggered Portugal’s best spell as wave after wave of attacks seemed certain to lead to more goals.

Chances galore

Bruno Alves tried to head in when a side-footed finish would surely have found the net, a scintillating Quaresma run was stopped by a another excellent save from Giorgallidis, Nani crashed a free-kick onto the bar, Almeida back-heeled a flowing move inches wide and substitute Liedson turned well and rifled the ball against the post.

Somehow Cyprus survived and a late push for an equaliser was rewarded when Eduardo could only parry a fierce Dobrasinovic drive and the unmarked Avraam gleefully headed into the net.

Portugal must now regroup and fast, starting on Tuesday when they play Norway in Oslo, if they do not want to experience the familiar tribulations of their World Cup qualifying campaign. The match takes on even more importance given that the Norwegians came from behind to win their opening Group H match in Iceland.

I was so upset after the last performance I didn't come back till today..

Let me address some of the comments.

Melo thank you for the kind words as well as Constructive Criticism.. I appreciate it..

My point was that most fans get wooed by the dancing but it is the results in the end that count.

My dislike for Quaresma is purely based on his ineffectiveness.. not on any hate towards him. That is why I counted stats.. to prove myself wrong.. in the end I justified my prediction.. albeit contrary to many others opinions.

I too enjoy your posts..btw

As for Nathan and Voice of Reason (MDot).. like you gentleman I am entitled to my own opinion.. you don't like it that is your problem.. I dually note your negative natures from past posts.

If reality bites than do something about it.. you think you have your perfect plans and clearly as a passionate fan I will have mine. At this point I will suggest we should give the other OrlandoM the managers role.. clearly he could do no worse than these clowns..

As for VOR (MDot) if you consider small 6 foot 240lbs.. then you are right I am small.

Mdot is that Montreal or is that Ontario region.. Maple or Mississauga.. because you shouldn't speak so loud I might hear you.. and you clearly don't want that to happen, hiding there behind the fake tag.

As for Fools from CA.. clearly you haven't read the news like the rest of us.. Queer Eyes (not because he is ugly but because he sees the game retarded) selected every squad to date.. that quote can be found in the Agostino Oliveira thread where he clearly points what everyone except for you knew.

Queiroz is at the helm but his assistant makes the substitutions.

As for the Cypriots I know a bunch and they are cool.. the majority posting here are tossers.. don't mind them.
this getting ridiculous

Please dude - you are just another gino from Canada/US who trots out his azzurri colours when you win something...which is ALWAYS playing that garbage negative football you clowns call "tactics".

You are just a pathetic troll...you have nothing good to say about your own pathetic team, so you troll other sites.

As for the Cypriots on this page - Loel et al. You are also a bunch of sad trolls...is there even an English language site for Crypriot football? Revel in your tie guys...we played a pathetic defensive game, YOU PLAYED THE GAME OF YOUR LIVES - AND TIED. National day of celebration for you - a day of discontent/shame/reflection for us. Who is better off?

Hey Loel...as for your question about what we have won? We haven't won a major championship - but when have you clowns even made a tournament? Have your club teams ever achieved anything in Europe? Other than a free pass to embarrass yourselves in Champions League or Europa? You talk trash about Portugal...but you are cheering our castoffs every weekend.

Enjoy your tie - we'll see where you wind up...I'm guessing no better than fourth...but you'll have that tie to hold on to for the rest of your pathetic international football life.

What I don't get is why all these Cypriots here are acting like they won the World Cup against the world's biggest footballing nation when clearly this Portuguese team underachieves and barely qualified for the last WC and as a total population Portugal ranks 77th in the world. What the...?

And please, not the Brazilian/African/Portuguese pure blood whining. I think it is ridiculous and even outright racist in this age that people think it's perfectly acceptable for a person to become a citizen of another country, to be eligible to be conscripted in its military and die for that country, and yet there's some arbitrary bar so ridiculously high that no person can ever play for another national team than the nation of their birth.

Listen firstly Bosingwa is half Portuguese so he is Portuguese and can play for are country!
Secondly wtf some people say Bruno alves is african, he was born in Portugal and hes Half Portuguese half Brazilian so hes Portuguese.
Thridly Miguel and Manuel Fernandes were both born in Portugal in Lisboa. And anyways theres loads of Cape Verderian people in Portugal cause of are relations bettween each other. Nani came when he was very very young also.
Lastly the two Brazilians Pepe and Liedson. Pepe is an exception because he always felt Portuguese non stop and is with an portuguese women, and he sing are anthem like hes a portuguese.

While Liedson hes the only player in are squad who should F@$! off. I dont get while he got picked and still gets picked. He came over to Portugal when he was about 25/26 (I think). So how can he get picked. I remeber when we were gonna play Brazil he said hee wont sing the Portuguese anthem, I thought he played for Portugal, but luckly he dint start!

Yes, there are Brazilians in our team, yes there are Africans in our team.

Remember one thing though: All of the Brazilians that have played for us have Portuguese heritage (even if it's 12,5%), all of the Africans have Portuguese heritage.

Queiroz was born in Mozambique but he is the son of Portuguese and 100% Portuguese. Tell me, if a Portuguese couple move to North America and have a son there does that mean that their son is not Portuguese?

Bosingwa's father is Portuguese and by the way, Bruno Alves is not African, his mother is Portuguese and his father is Brazilian. (Brazil is in South America and Portugal is in Europe;)

Eusebio is a Mozambican, but have you ever seen a black man from Mozambique? They are black, proper black. Eusebio is a mixture of white and black, in Africa called a colored, in Portugal called a Mulato. He has a Portuguse last name; he has Portuguese ancestors ;)

I don't like Cyprus anymore because of the people i have met on this site.

The Portuguese waste too much time showing off doing the Samba in the midfield, but the Cypriots don’t understand this so they don’t dance with you!

As soon as Cypriots steal the ball which isn’t often, they’ll just cross it over to a fast striker who’ll finish it off! They just don’t dance the midfield Samba! :)

Portugal: 30 attempts result in 4 goals!
Cyprus: 6 attempts result in 4 goals!

You do the maths…

The unabated negativity is definitely getting old Orlandomac. Nobody cares or agrees with you on why you don't like Quaresma. Nobody thinks he is back to his old form yet, but maybe you should keep stats on every other player and I think you would find that they were certainly no better than Quaresma yesterday.

How about you contribute something productive to the conversation for once?

Ah you Cypriots, it's fun to achieve something as an underdog isn't it? Before you go celebrating in the streets, I hope you will remember that you still have 7 more games of qualifying, just like we do, and you better hope that you can go a step further and win a few games because all the draws in the world will not get you into Euro 2012. Congratulations on a well played match, and best of luck to you in the rest of the qualification campaign.....believe me, you will need it.

these cyprus fools must be jelous of the portuguese national team so they are taking my identity. I am in fact one who wrote I am more brasilian than portuguese but portugal for being about 40 times smaller than brasilia is a great footy nation. Talk about mistaken identity APEOL consists of over 30 percent portuguese players. Enough talk to end this. Cyprus not good enough to qualify fir anything and as already stated very poor against weaker teams. And as for the whole brasilians or past brasilians who play or played for Portugal fact is whether most brasilians want to admit it or not they owned the old colony of brasilia and for christ sakes they gave us the language. Orlandomac, you seem to revel in our team not achieving results. Nothing is good enough for you - you always find a reason to complain about how this team doesn't live up to your high standards/expectations - always with the "I told you so", after the fact comments. Do everyone a favour and put a sock in it...you are becoming a parody of yourself you azzclown.

It was the first game of qualification - was the result acceptable? NO. Is it the end of the world? NO (thought it seems like it may be for you). Lighten up dude...they will get it done, but of course, you'll find something to complain about. You are a sad, little man.

Love these Cyprus clowns we gift them all 4 goals and they act as if they won. Truth is they should of won with how bad defensively we played. And to all these fools saying we should not talk bad about CYprus fact is this is a english website based completely on portuguese football so therefore myself and other fellow portuguese will continue to bad mouth CYprus if we so chose.

In the grand scheme of things if we can beat the scandanavians in norway and the danes in next 2 games then we take control of group. Of course easier said then done but if we can play BALANCEd full 90 minute games then we can get back. IF not then we are in some trouble but it's over and now lets improve against norway

Last night Portugal's coaches and players have under estimated Cyprus. That's all.

You have to blame your coach team because obviously they haven't studied the way Cyprus is playing at all.
Cyprus is an island with 800k people but the last few years football here is growing really fast.
National team has brought in some great results recently and the last 2 years Anorthosis and APOEL managed to get in C.L. groups.
Some people said we are the weakest team in the group. Well my friends you will be surprised.
Cyprus's target is to qualify to Euro Cup and this is said by the officials of the Cyprus Federation Committee.
We don't have a super team but we have a team that fights every single game and also players with a lot of experience in European games.
So better blame the men responsible and stop talking trash about us.

Overall Portugal was a disgrace and the players bought shame to our country...Cyprus are very low ranked team with players who most football fans have never even heard of...so to conceed 4 goal against these part time foootballers is just terrible. I don't understand the all this hype about Quaresma he is not a team player, he's a show off with people getting too excited with his fancy tricks. I have to ask SupremoGino are you sure you didn't drink one too many bigaso's last night? because his observation seems to be very diiferent from most of us. I'm not sure if this is worse than the Albania 0-0 result in the WCQ but it certainly comes close to the 2-2 draw with Liechtenstein we had under Felipao a few years ago.

Just 4 days later we thrashed Russia 7-1. We can only hope for a similar positive backlash against Norway on Tuesday...
A Poor Performance

Not much to add to what has been stated ... this was a case of overconfidence, lack of concetration, and discpline.

The 5th goal would have won the game but did not get it and lost with the lead on a defensive lapse.

It is apparent Pepe was missing from the defensive mid role as much as some peopple do not like him there with the fullbacks overlapping you get enough attack to put Pepe there.

I am the biggest fan of Miguel and biggest critic of Paul F but I think Miguel should have retired over Paul F (see what a game like this does to the mind). Don't understand why they kept bringing in attacking players and should have brought in one defensive player late.

Bottom line not the end of the world but must get 3 points in Norway -- after what I saw today not that confident unless the concetration level picks up.

The federation needs to fix this CQ mess becomes in the end the fans will be the losers.

once again, a team of individuals. no direction from the coach down.
For all those that dislike CR7 , as you can see tonight when he isnt there its just as bad.
The team doesn't have a leader, Quieroz or his staff cant instill any leadership or any hint of invincibility. CR7 clearly cant lead and nor can anyone else.
The team was doing its on things. Absolutely no cohesion. Al
If it wasn't for some brilliant individual goals we would have lost tonight.
The FFP is now in a real quandary on what to do. Both the FFP & Queiroz should resign if u ask me.

This draw is not a surprise result , and Not because Cyprus is a good team ....they do Suck. They prepare themselves for against the big name teams but also prove themselves complacent when playing weaker opponents, their record speaks for themselves, (eg) they couldnt even beat Montegro during this past World cup qualifying, and tied Georgia also, just recently just beat Andorra by a result of only 1-0.And Losing to Canada in a warm-up . Yes thats right to Canada.

Where Portugal on the other hand being consistantly dominating opponants and in this game knowing they played terrible came out with a tie, which shows that they have high standards .
They have to go back to the drawing board with their highly ranked defence .....they know better than this and will be sucessfull next weaks match.

Orlandomac Call a SPADE a SPADE! Just because you dislike a player you are saying that the rest of us have no clue what we are talking about. I'm not a huge fan of some of the players you mentioned, but you fail to mention that they did have a good game. Reading your post here tonight it appears to me that you in fact have your favourites ie: Miguel which in my opinion was the worst player on the field. I enjoy reading most of your posts and I look forward to reading more but please stop with the Queer Eyes Comment. I think you are the only one who calls him that, I don't understand why? What does his looks have to do with anything? I personally want Portugal to get a new coach but who am I? Things need to change in a hurry starting from the top of the Portuguese Federation to the bottom of the Jr Scouts. Under 21 are also a big disappointment, they are in need of good coaching as well. IMO coaching is Portugal biggest obstacle standing in our way to any success.

I think this game should be dedicated to all the people who said CQ is crap and should be fired. This was not a CQ type of game plan. I think whatever his name is was trying to please all the CQ critiques and play atractive football so he could get the job full time .Face it in to days game fancy football can get you only so far ,for example Q7 looked great but had no end product. Miguel should not have been out their he looked like he was to important to play defence like he would have been insulted if he was asked to mark a cypriot player, they should have went with silvio who at least wouldn't have the ego problem and would have played his ass off to stay on the team. I think the big money has went bruno alves head their was no excuse for his mistakes today. The subs today were horrible more defenders or mids should have been brought on to help the shakey defence why would you bring on a player with no technique and no defending abilities when your protecting a lead like Djalo instead of a veloso or tiago . the team scored 4 goals with one striker why did they feel the need to start playing with two and weaken an already poor team defence . and thanks alot to the FPF for not playing a freindly it realy showed todays cyprus goals were all from a portuguese players making mistakes . I know Raul and Manuel both scored great goals but they cost us goals too and you could tell they were rusty and out of sink from lack of games. I dont know why they didn't start moutinho who is match fit and starts every game for a undefeated porto side.I hope i hear that CQ's suspension has been postponed for whatever reason they can come up with .

and please put carlos martins on the squad at least on the bench i mean what else does he have to do he had a great seaso nlast season has scored already this season he is a good player with more passion then that whole portugal squad toghter
queresma could have been better and was greedy in some plays where he could have played a simple pass i was happy with nanis performance and coentrao just gets better every single game and to me is the best player on the field every game and he is super passionate and confident lets be honest its gonna be a long time before portugal reach the heights of football like in euro 2004 and WC 2006 i am really tired of watching them dissapoint everyone i just have one solution bring in a whole new coaching staff and teach thos players to pl;ay for their country and not for fame
and after saying that cyprus came in with a great attitude and gave it all they had well done cyprus
Portugal once again dissapoint

Our defence was pathetic in this match, Miquel looked slow and out of shape and Bruno Alves was way too sloppy. Carvalho and Contreo were alright for the most part but there was only so much they could do. I don't want to put too much blame on Eduardo, but he was out of position for the 2nd goal and could have done better with the 4th. Manuel Fernandes played all right going forward, but didn't track back the way a holding midfielder is supposed to. If Pepe or Mendes were in that position no way in hell Cyprus would get through the way they did.

We looked good going forward although H. Almeida could have been a little better in that last big attempt he had. As for the sub's....The coach seemed to not have any idea about the logistics of preserving a lead. oh well, hopefully the selleccao can get all the points in Norway.

As for Joel, we don't need you trolling these boards...what are you like 12? Go to your own teams boards where you can brag about the draw (not a win mind you) with others like you.

Don't trash talk Portugal. If you were educated at all you would know not to do that. If i wanted to I would mention all the statistics that show what Cyprus really is (and we all know that that is far below Portugal's level).

But anyway, this site is about football, so let's talk about football... oh wait, Cypriot football is nonexistent! The only thing worth mentioning is that the best team (APOEL) is full of Portuguese players!
Bottom line..

Hire me as the new National coach and I guarantee I can create a solid defense, a scary attacking offense and most importantly discipline within our players that will show some RESPECT towards our opponents.

Cyprus came in here and they had CONFIDENCE and confidence did they prove by scoring 4 goals.

Cyprus ranks 63 in FIFA rankings and they were playing as they ranked in the top 10!

Time for a change, the change is now, the change is me Orlando Manuel Botelho Medeiros!

Funny how you talk big after a draw, your acting like you guys won, then again its not often you guys leave a game with a point isnt it?

Us portuguese are treating this like a loss because to us if you leave a cyprus game with anything other than a 4-0 win, then its disappointing.

Your crap about Cyprus being a good team may fly on your own sites, so stay there and maybe all you can talk eachother up, and try convince yourselves that your good. you have no idea what your talking about on the field.

In my opinion the Portugese National Team needs...New Philosophy, New Ideas, New Character, New Belief, New Coach, New Tactics.

Coz Honestly from the World Cup 2006 till now Portugese Team is becoming Weaker and Weaker...

In my Opinion this thing of the Coach is effecting the team...

Quaresma in my opinion is getting better then he was since he left FC Porto

Fernandes Congratz on Playing So Good and so do Meireles

Weldone Cyprus too on playing good...we need to remember that Cyprus went very good against Italy too and other teams so altough its a small island..that doesnt mean they arent good. They are developing.

Honeslty I hope this does not be the same as the World Cup Qualifiers

Good Luck Portugal!! FORCA PORTUGAL!!!

Just when you thought our NT couldn't go any lower, we reach a new low...Don't understand how we concede only one goal in four games at the World Cup, and now we concede four against a weak side at home who have never won, drawn, or even scored a single goal against us in the past...I know the coaches and players say the whole case with Queeroz and the FPF doesn't effect them, but it clearly does...If this case doesn't get resolved soon then we won't qualify for Euro 2012...Don't the FPF and Queeroz see what their doing with the NT?...The freakin fans aren't even going to turn up for the games anymore...I mean only 10,000 fans showed up to a stadium that fits 28,000...How sad is that?...And speaking of sad our defence was real sad today...Eduardo, B.Alves, Miguel, and R.MERDAles really messed up on plays that resulted in a fluke goal for Cyprus...Anyways enough with the negatives...At least there were a few postives to take out of the match like our attacking players actually playing well and scoring goals in the process...Also old man, Carvalho shows he still has it in him to compete...I hope and pray that he remains captain instead of that pretty boy punk...Other players who impressed tonight were F.Coentrao, Nani, H.Almeida, Quaresma, and M.Fernandes...Manny is a way better opition then R.Merdales...His movement and passes were spot on all night long and was rewarded with a fine goal....Also the Q-Man is back...I was eager to see him play after seeing him tearing things up in Turkey...Forget CR7, I want more RQ7

I'm reading the comments and am in stitches..

Some comments so far are remarkable.. like the dude that said Fernandes played good..LOL

He even said Pepe should stay on the bench... ROFLMAO... dude the bridge to your pipe should be shut down permanentaly.

As I predicted Man of the Match.. LOL
the most ineffective player on the field.. clearly most of you dudes prefer to see the ballet and not real football..

Dancing for Dancing sake is USELESS..

Quaresma shooting right at the goalie turned into a great stop by the goalie..

he took numerous shots and scored none.. that was a success.

Then his inability to pass or cross became his strength.. he went 7 for 28 in passes.. THAT IS RETARDED!!

You guys are praising him.

We also had a guy that thought we played overly defensive.. without a defensive mid in sight.
Clearly driving in the wrong direction is legal in your state.

Also I can appreciate Miguel had a brutal game but most of the comments should be directed at Fernandes as in most of those instances Miguel had pushed up and it was Fernandes (or Meireles) responsibility to cover.. where was he..?

In front of Danny.

Clearly positional play isn't a forte for some of you.

Now I was happy with the sub attempt at the 4-4-2 as at least the assistant showed that was possible for the future (not to mention I have been screaming since World Cup 66 for it) but can appreciate most of you gentlemen had concerns in doing so.. espeically the Djalo move.. it was the same mistake Queer Eyes made against Denmark.

Again it did cost us.. but the offence did look better then and actually opened holes for Quaresma to dance..

although I would tell Quaresma.. if you want to dance..go to the Portuguese Club..
on the field we are trying to win games.

it was a good game today. but i was suprised with a tie versus a weak team. mistakes with the defense cost the game. sounds like nt needs pepe and bosingwa back. i think that querasma did great, better than he used to be. fernandes, fabio, nani and danny did good too. another thing is the almeida fancy shot could have been the winning goal but he had to joke around. the playrs are getting to be too childish. they need some disciplne and get serious. if agostinha was smart while they were winning could have put another defender to hold a winning score. but nope he is stupid like the fpf crew who dont know to hire a great coach.

This will either cause the federation to reduce Quieroz's suspension (if not abolish it completely), or cause them to bring in a new coach. The back four were in shambles because of the sudden change in coach. They were obviously not given a clear strategy, and didn't communicate properly. Anytime a team experiences a change in coach, usually the defence suffers, rather than the offence.

On the bright side Almeida, Fernandes, Meireles, and Quaresma had spectacular games. Quaresma looked dangerous every time he received the ball, and he created a number of scoring chances. The greatest thing about his preformance though, was that he used his teammates at the right times, and did it himself at the right times. Anybody who says he did poorly is obviously judging him on his past rather than his present attitude and play.

Portugal were held today against a Cyprus side that is not the whipping boys of Europe although some traditionalists still seem to think so. Have you forgotten that Cyprus beat Ireland (5-2), Bulgaria (4-1) Wales (3-1) and held Germany (1-1) and Ireland (1-1 away) to draws. The island also lost twice in injury time to Italy - in one game throwing a 2-0 lead away with 12 minutes left. Cyprus has also put 2 teams in the champions league so can we please cut out all these 'oh my god' cries of disbelief.

We are no powerhouses like Portugal, but we are good side that works hard. There is no easy team in this group so get ready Portugal...
pros and cons

Luis Alves/Portugal
let me start off by saying how bad Bruno Alves and Miguel were today...The defending was pretty bad giving up those stupid goals...Eduardo could have done better in at least 2 out of the 4 goals given up. Now for the Positives...Quaresma, Fernandes, Almeida, and Meireles all had a great game..i am looking forward to seeing Quaresma back in the mix because he looks to be getting his form back and he entertained everybody...one thing portugal has to do is finish a game even if it is against a scrub team like cyprus..especially when quaresma passed the ball to almeida for a great chance at goal and he tried getting fancy and blew it...liedsons chance was also wasted...but overall i believe this will change soon and portugal will be back ontop..credit to cyprus for hanging in there...forca portugal!!!

This Assistant coach is our jinx people, he has the same coaching methods as Queiros. These Dumb Ass coaches make changes when you don't have to. Play the game with your starting 11 and end it with your starting 11 especially when your winning . A win is a win WHY bring out Strikers when you have the lead ? SHAME on these guys because they are only thinking of themselves and their PRIDE! The coach wanted more goals for BRAGGING rights and look what happened.Miguel should have been replaced in the 50th min, thats all the coach should of substituted. GET RID OF THE NATIONAL TEAM JERSY BECAUSE THE GREEN PATCH ACROSS THE FRONT IS BAD LUCK.

How thick are the players on this team, OMG. Wtf happened to the defence, i do not understand how on earth they could get ripped by such inferior opponents. You can say oh the attack was so good, yet how can cyprus have such few chances and score the same amount as the team who had over 50 attacks. Our coach then does crap, we get a new one and then wish for the old one to come back. I don't like to say it but miguel is finished and the whole defence should take blame for that. Why on earth did they start the game at a thousand miles per hour, this team needs to learn how to slow down, it's as if they are in a massive rush to score.

The situation is so political now it's ridiculous. Instead of getting things done swiftly and putting some thought into it, the fpf now have a massive mess to clean up. Hopefully this game is a blessing in disguise for the seleccao, and makes the players, coaches and board realise that they are heading for another qualification struggle that is going to get harder than the previous campaigns.

Portuguese Superior Arrogance

I heard it throughout the whole match a bunch of rich Porkchops commentating on how superior we were.

YOU FOOLS!!

Anyone with a clue knew Cyprus to be highly dangerous!

Our team management like the announcers said the exact same at the conclusion of the game.. Agostino although he made decent subs in my opinion did not control the players and the formation. He like Queer Eyes let them play their way, we all see now what happens when a chicken runs with no head.

Yes the 4-4-2 looked brilliant.. but if you have no Defensive Mid.. when your Half-backs attack you are left with holes.. all of the Cypriot goals came through the defensive mid.. or the lack of him being there.

It was nice of Manuel Fernandes to score a crazy goal.. unfortunately it came at the expense of 3 he was way out of position for.

What is a Defensive Mid attacking the box as a striker doing?
Leaving holes.. Miguel too looked sloppy.. Alves.. poor..

and of course lets get to the Man of the Match..

I am sure a few of you will say it.

Quaresma.. danced like a ballerina..

His stats:
no assists..
0 shooting percentage.. (although in the second half he did shoot two beauties right at the goalie)..
and
went 7 for 28 in passes and crosses (25% passing is atrocious).

Of those passes/crosses 4 were give and goes from a corner. 2 were open field passes with no one around.. and only 1 was a cross into the box, of which Leidson stole the header because it was aimed at Almeida and was way behind him.

Now if Pepe had played or even Mendes we would've still won this game even with Quaresma.. but anyone that suggests one of the wanna- be strikers playing defensive mid like Veloso, Meireles, Fernandes, Tiago, etc.. they should be strapped to a poll and flogged in public.

The Petit era is back.. it is like a nightmare with all balls going to the spot where the defensive mid should be.. but is upfield catching flies.

Meireles has a role and it is further up front.. he needs a DM behind him to be effective.

The defence is the same but when you remove Pepe..or Mendes those holes start appearing.. then the questions of is Carvalho too old.. is Alves any good.. can we win a game? start popping up.

The sad part is Cyprus plays poorly on the road.. their strength is at home.. and Norway will be feasting off the holes in this mid.

Most were expecting gimmes and 6 points.. with this management.. and their selection no point is safe.. not even at home with last years defensive juggernauts.

Fire Queer Eyes now..Agostino isn't better than his dad who was punched in the face for poor managing..

HIRE A REAL BOSS..

(That was Queer Eyes squad selection btw... to start the match.)

This is just the first game...plenty of time to fix this.

The d line was just beyond horrendous (and Eduardo was at fault for the 4th - punch it away!!), but offensively we looked bright and we're very unlucky not to score 2-3 more goals (liedson post, Almeida header cleared off the line, etc). The back line will get better and if Alves isn't up to the task, Rolando will take his place.

What I just can't understand is why he subbed Liedson for Danny and Moutinho for Fernandes with a 1 goal lead? Why not put Rolando in front of the back 4 considering how shaky there were? Why play with 2 strikers when you're protecting a lead. Lots of question marks.

On the bright side, I was pleased with Quaresma's play.
One could argue about a lack of killer instinct, but when you score 4, you need to come away with the W. This all falls on the manager and the back line.
WTF

That was trash! I hate when they back pass. I hope this home loss to one of the weakest teams in Europe will send a message to the FPF to stop interfering with the team. They are 100% at fault. I knew there would be trouble in this game. I just didn't realize it would be this severe. There were some bright spots of course, such as scoring 4 goals, but I can't believe we let in 4! That's more goals than we've allowed in more than a year of competitive matches. Unbelievable......it was an entertaining game to watch but I am sorely disappointed. Especially since Norway beat Iceland (in Iceland) today. That game, on Tuesday, will be another challenging affair. I'm so disappointed. We needed Ronaldo, and some of the substitutes were questionable. Overall though, we just looked out of sorts, like.....hmmm.....when a team has only a substitute manager! I wonder why that is?

Ok, ok, I'm going to try to focus on the good things now. Quaresma looked pretty good today I thought. He put in some good crosses, wasn't too selfish and nearly scored a wonderful individual goal and was denied only by a great save from Cyprus' keeper.

Coentrao looked good and nearly scored a fantastic goal today. Fernandes did score a fantastic goal but he also gave away a back pass that he shouldn't have.

Almeida was really good too and was so unlucky to not score another goal. Honestly, we could've had at least 3 more goals today. Nani hit the post with a vicious free kick, Quaresma was barely denied, Coentrao's piledriver was turned away, and of course, Almeida's header was cleared off the line.

I wonder about why Liedson was introduced once we were already ahead? If anything we needed a defensive minded midfielder to help us maintain possession.

Carvalho also looked good today and I really feel for Eduardo, who was really left all by his lonesome for 3 of the 4 goals.

Ahh, tough day....I hope they can rebound from this and get the defense together a little better. Our offense looked strong for the most part. We could've had at least 5 or 6.

Forca sempre Portugal!

Quaresma was brilliant. Mr. Man of the match. They underestimated Cyprus. Everyone came to play and have fun. Almeida had an easy put away and he wanted to look fancy which cost us. But look at Cyprus goals. Atleast 3 of them where practically 1 vs 1 breakaways. Our defence was terrible. Alves was playing way too deep for a CB. Its a very disappointing result but exciting match overall. Great offensive attack but keep it mind Cyprus isnt great either. Shame it ended 4-4. The team needs to start playing with discipline again.

A very un-organized and un-discipline display of soccer. The team seemed to lack leadership. It is sad to see what the FPF has done to the psyche of this team. They where very lucky to escape todays game with a draw. The FPF needs to re-evaluate its commitment to winning and competing on the world level. They need to lay down a stable foundation for every facet of the Selecao to succeed and flourish into a european & world power. Its a sad state of affairs.... Forca Portugal....

I jus cant believe it,
CQ has to go.... this was by far the worst ever, for the love of moses, please fire him now, right now.
The portuguese tactics & substitutions were absolutley horrid.
Can somebody please tell me how on earth do 2 players who werent even selected to the original team end up playing.
How is it that Quaresma is not good enough to make the team, but good ends up in the starting 11, wtf?
If that wasnt mind boggling enough, the last substitution omg, meu deus, i was screaming at the TV, I almost collapsed, Yannik for Almeida...We were up a goal, bring in a defender or a holding player, especially since we were playing disasterously at the back, didnt CQ realize this? why did he put in a striker, and one who is shit & didnt even make the original team.
I am absolutely dumbfounded, my dad would be a better coach, i swear to god he would be.
Is CQ retarded? he has to be, no one in their right mind would do what he did.
You had Rolando, Veloso, Coehlo, Tiago all on the bench...and you bring in Yannik, wtf?????????????
I just cant believe that the fpf can keep him around any longer, he has to get fired....now....like tonight.

On another note....
Eduardo should have the last goal, any descent goalie should have just caught the ball, not sure what he was doing.
RC & BA didnt have a good game, mind you it doesnt help that every player in front of them is only thinking of going forward, including coentrao & miguel.

BUT NEVER MIND THAT.
CQ must get fired, holy moly, what does this guy have to do to get fired? GET RID OF HIM FOR CHRISTS SAKE.

Com muito tristeza (in the USA)
I will never understand why Portugal always is setup to fail with these extremely defensive positioning. Why were there two defensive midfielders, when Portugal was playing against Cyprus at home. If you think putting Hugo Almeida up front by himself is a winning strategy, than I think this game has proved you wrong.

Next week they play against Norway. (whom are better than Cyprus) in Norway (which is always cold, even in the summer) That game will be much harder than this one.

To their credit, Cyprus played well, but they were also helped by the fact that Portugal game them so much space, especially in the first half. It's sad to say, but unless there is a major overhaul of the defensive positioning that we are seeing now (as well as what we saw in South Africa), I don't expect to see much from Portugal when (and at this point IF) they make it to the Euro2012.
See there is proof!!

How on gods earth did we let up 4 goals against cyprus? Nothing more has to be said other than that. Draw with brazil and ivory coast and basically a draw against spain and then we let up 4 goals to cyprus. I actually did not even know that cyprus was a real country until recently I just thought it was a city in Iraq somewhere. This is the problem with this team we just mess around to much we need to make this little teams pay and smash them in the mouth 5-0. Netherlands were convining and spain was convincing today and it is hilarious how france lost and italy almost as well. All in all this is embarrasing but like greg mentioned at least they scored I am happy about that.

We created enough chances to win the next 10 matches but somehow only put 4 away?!?! When I saw Almeida's smile after he messed up that EASY chance Quaresma gave him, something told me that was our jinx. Too comfortable everytime we went ahead and nobody really stepped up to put the game to bed. I don't think I even need to mention how shocking the defense was.. So much for our "unbreakable" back line.. I still don't know WHAT was with Bruno Alves..
Now if this game was evenly matched, I'd have no problem with the 4-4 draw. But we could have EASILY put at least 4 more against them..

On a more postive note, Quaresma, Fernandes, Danny and Meireles all played a killer game! So happy to see Quaresma and Fernandes back in the squad.. Nani, Almeida, & Coentrao weren't bad either.

The good news is that offensively we looked good. But Cyprus left a lot open for us to carve up. Just as they went up 2-0 against Italy during qualifiers, it looks like Portugal never reviewed the tapes.
