Our heads have not dropped - Portugal striker Liedson“Let’s bring back the three points” Portugal forward Liedson insists that the Seleccao remain focused on securing a victory against Norway on Tuesday evening, despite the disruption surrounding the squad and the disappointing result against Cyprus on Friday.
Led by interim coach Agostinho Oliveira, Portugal were held to a 4-4 draw with Cyprus in Guimaraes, in a match watched by just 10,000 spectators at the Dom Afonso Henriques Stadium. It a was a poor result to start the team’s Euro 2012 qualification campaign, but Liedson today told reporters that the team aim to make up for the setback against Norway in Oslo. “Nobody is happy, of course not. Nobody expected to draw but football is unpredictable,” Liedson said. “The important thing is that the group is not down. We are upset about the situation, but our heads are up and we are sure we will have a good game (against Norway) and bring back the three points. “We were unlucky to concede four goals at home which, with all due respect to Cyprus, should not happen, but now it is in the past and we must forget about it. “The Queiroz situation? We as players should not speak about these things. We think only about the game “Of course we would have liked the stadium to be full, as we’re used to, but the most important thing is for us to keep working, to not think about the issues off the field but on the games themselves and to win them.” By Sean Gillen Keep up to date with all the latest news on Portuguese football with the new PortuGOAL Twitter! |

I agree with Patrick. If fans aren't going to support Portugal at Guimeraes, then don't schedule any further games there. Maximize the home advantage.
I don't beleive Liedson is the problem or the solution. He may not be the quality we would like to see at Forward, but Portugal needs to find/develop a better option. From what I see, Liedson plays with full effort.
I read the comments from the Cyprus game summary. First, congratulations to Cyprus. A tie in the away leg is a good accomplishment against any team. Second, any person who goes to another team's website to slander the other team needs to find better things to do with their time. Third, there is no question Italy has a better history in futbol than Portugal, but I don't see much to be proud of coming from Italy now. Lower your voices Italy. We can smell you.
The little train that could... but just never does!!!!!!
Alas. I will love Portugal to the end of times (my being 3rd generation American, to boot). Love is hard, but hopefully, before I pass on, I will see Portugal as a winner on the World Stage.
I tell my wife, if she wants to see a grown man cry, she'll need to wait until Portugal wins a World Cup!!!!!!
"Justing from Rochester", you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about...YOU need to head down and wash dishes because since you made this idiotic comment, it seems like you have tremendous experience in this field.
We need to be positive and avoid the negative immature feedback.
If I lived in Portugal, I would go to every home game, regardless of distance as I'd have no excuse and I'd be proud to support my national team!!
Carvalho is an excellent captain for Portugal!
Good luck to the Portuguese national team!!
Nani, Q7, and Almeida should take care of business. I dont care if its 1-0. Just pick up the win and we'll jump right on top the group.
The team needs the support of its fans. Guimeraes holds close to 30,000 and we should be filling that regardless of who we are playing.
The people who didn't bother to show up should accept some of the responsibility for this draw.
Where is the love!
How bad is Coentrao's injury? Is it going to keep him out for a lengthy amount of time? I don't much about Silvio, are you sure that Veloso won't be replacing him? We just need whoever plays to be able to make those runs into the attacking third that Coentrao makes so well. Of course, he'll also have to be sound defensively since we appear to be struggling in that department all of a sudden.
We can beat Norway, but not if we play like we did against Cyprus. Cyprus just looked like they wanted it more than we did. If we play our best, we can win, but it won't be easy and it looks like the players understand that now.
Forca Portugal
and those that forget the past are doomed to repeat it....
anything less than maximum points against Norway and Portugal can forget about Euro '12....
As for Coentrao I really don't think that he will be replaced. He is by far one of the most promising players we have for the futur of the selecao.
Norway will be very strong, physical and direct and will cause different problems to those that Cyprus posed.
Tactically we need to be much more disciplined. I won't mention any names but there is no place for ballerina play and giving the ball away cheaply so that Norway can hoof it forward and instigate quick, direct attacks.
Norway are there for the taking but only if we play smart and patient. I hate to say it but we could do with Queiroz's tactical know-how during this game.
