Bruno Alves saves Portugal in stoppage time

Albania 1-2 Portugal

Portugal badgeAlbania badgePortugal kept alive their dream of making it to the South Africa World Cup thanks to a dramatic 92nd-minute winner from Bruno Alves. Hugo Almeida gave Carlos Queiroz's side the lead in the first half, but one minute later it was all square as Bogdani equalised.

Portugal again failed to play with the creativity and freedom of the not-too-distant past, but Alves' late winner could prove a turning point in the Queiroz era.

Albania 1-2 Portugal

Never surely has a victory over a team of the level of Albania provoked so many post-match celebrations. Portugal's players have a collective hug in the centre circle. But a win is a win. Portugal are still alive in the hunt for at place at the 2010 World Cup, thanks to Bruno Alves' dramatic late late winner.

95' - Final whistle goes. Portugal win 2-1.

94' - Now it's Portugal's turn to waste time. Duda takes about ten minutes to take a thow-in!

92' -  GOAL!!!!!!!!!!GOAL!!!!!!!!!! Bruno Alves, one day after being named Player of the Year in Portugal, rises high to head past Hidi and score what surely must be the winner.

90' - Another Edinho header is pouched by Hidi. Five minutes of stoppage time Five minutes for Portugal to get out of jail.

89' - Bruno Alves, playing as a striker, crashes into two defenders from the corner. The referee blows for a foul.

88' - Bosingwa has not given up. Another fine cross finds Edinho, but the striker's header is deflected wide.

86' - Bosingwa does well to battle his way past three defender and cross into the box, but Hidi climbs high to claim the ball.

84' - Things are getting desperate for Portugal. Six minutes to save their World Cup campaign.

81' - Bosingwa combines well with Ronaldo and is stopped by a last-ditch challenge.

80' - Yellow Card Pepe stops an Albanian counter-attack with a trip from behind and is shown the yellow card.

78' - Ronaldo shots wide from close range.

76' - Nani comes on for Ricardo Carvalho. It's time to throw the kitchen sink at the Albanian team.

74' - The Seleccao step on the accelarator again. Two crosses in quick succession cause problems for goalkeeper Hidi. Yellow Card The Albania number one then picks up a yellow card after an exchange of niceties with Alves and/or a spot of time-wasting.

72' - Portugal seem to have lost their way. A short corner is completely wasted, with Deco playing a short pass straight to an opposition player.

70' - Danger for Portugal. A corner is whipped in and some atrocious marking leaves an Albanian forward with a free header, which he thankfully puts over the bar.

69' - Queiroz tries to shake things up. Edinho comes on for Hugo Almeida. Both goalscorers in the match have been replaced.

66' - Portugal have worrying slowed the pace of their game again.

63' - Albanian goalscorer Bogdani comes off, substituted by Bylykbashi.

62' - Meireles hits a powerful shot that thuds into a defender and the danger is clear. Portugal have improved in the second half but they deperately need a goal.

58' - Some Ronaldo magic almost results in a goal! The Manchester United man controls the ball on his chest and volleys on the swivel just over the bar.

57' - Bogdani embarks on a strong run into the Portugal box and appears to be tripped by Carvalho. The referee waves play on. TV replays confirm it was a clear penalty. Some luck for Portugal.

54' -  Yellow Card Agolli shown the yellow card.

54' - Ronaldo fires in a violent shot that Hidi saves at the second attempt.

53' - Meireles wins a free kick in a dangerous position, 30 metres from goal in the centre of the pitch. Ronaldo lines up to take it...

Meanwhile news filters through that Denmark have won in Sweden. The Danes have practically guaranteed top spot in the group. Portugal have to win to fight for second place and a play-off spot.

51' - Deco is next to threaten, but his cross-shot is straight at goalkeeper Hidi.

49' - Portugal applying good pressure at the start of the second half. A cross from the right causes all sorts of chaos in the box, with Almeida just failing to take advantage.

48' - Simao again in action, firing an effort just over the bar from the edge of the box.

47' - Simao immediately in the action. A good run from the winger has the Albanians backtracking.

46' - Second-half getys underway. Simao Sabrosa comes on for Boa Morte.

Portugal's World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread. An inexplicable lack of urgency has been noticeable in the opening 45 minutes given what is at stake. Carlos Queiroz faces a huge test of his motivational skills during the break.

45' - Boa Morte runs into an alley without exit. The half-time whistle blows with the teams all square.

43' - Duda crosses for Almeida but the big striker can't keep his header down.

41' - Vangjeli tries his luck from distance but a harmless shot dribbles wide.

39' - Another dangerous break by Bosingwa, whose creates space for a cross which is cleared with difficulty by the diving head of an Albania defender.

37' - Portugal inches away for retaking the lead! Deco finds Meireles with a smart diagonal cross. The Porto midfielder volleys first time and Hidi makes a superb reaction save to keep the ball out.

35' - Dangerous break by Albania. Eduardo forced to concede a corner, which is comfortably cleared.

31' - Slick combination between Deco and Bosingwa sets the right-back free. His cross is cut out for Portugal's first corner, which comes to nothing.

28' - GOAL!!!!!!!!!!GOAL!!!!!!!!!! Albania equalise one minute after going behind. The dangerous Skela escapes down the left flank and floats a wonderful cross into the danger area, which Bogdani heads into the net.

27' - GOAL!!!!!!!!!!GOAL!!!!!!!!!! Bosingwa crosses, the Albanian defence goes missing without leave and the unmarked Hugo Almeida heads into the net from point-blank range.

24' - Two scares for Portugal in quick succession. A free kick from distance is spilled by Eduardo but no Albanian is on hand to pick up the scraps. Moments later Skela lobs over Eduardo but the ball does not have enough strength on it to find the net.

21' - Yellow Card Ronaldo cut down to the ground again. Yellow card for Curri.

19' - Again Portugal create danger and again Ronaldo is at the heart of the move. A lovely back-heel sets up Boa Morte who lifts his shot over the bar.

17' - Penalty appeal turned down!! Ronaldo weaves his way into the box at high speed and seems to be tripped in the box. The referee waves play on, provoking furious protests from Ronaldo. TV replays suggest he is right to be upset.

15' - Another good break from Ronaldo who looks in the mood tonight. The ball breaks to Boa Morte in the box but the West Ham winger is crowded out.

12' - First threat from the hosts. Albania win a dangerous free kick 30 metres from goal and a fine cross is whipped into the second post, which Pepe clears with difficulty.

9' - Dangerous run by Ronaldo unceremoniously brought to a halt by a scything foul on the edge of the box. Yellow Card Yellow card for Vangjeli. The Manchester United man fires in an effort from the resulting free-kick which flies past the post.

5' - Slow start to the match. Close the 30,000 partisan fans in the stadium, making it a difficult atmosphere for Portugal, with plenty of fire-crackers in the mix.

Lack of Options
31 Monday, 08 June 2009 20:44
David in NY, I agree with your comments and insights. I know you are a frequent contributor to this forum and a voice of reason.

We curently have a lack of options but I still hold hope for some of the young defenders like Antunes and Da Costa as you mentioned. I wish they had stayed in Portugal a bit longer. I believe that defenders take longer to develop and most successful Portuguese defenders played in Portugal until their mid 20s: Carvalho, Miguel, Bosw, Pepe (I think he is overrated), Andrade (one of the best and greatly missed), Meira, etc. I don't put Paul Ferreria on this list.

I also think that Portugal peaked in 2006 and were a 1A tier power. First tier is for soccer powers like Argentina, France, Brazil, Italy and we were above the second tier between the first and second tiers. We have slipped into a 2nd tier power and if not careful will be a 3rd tier power if we continue to regress.

I think we have defenders we can count on for future the problem with be strikers (nothing new), wingers, and a creative midfield force like a Rui Costa to replace Deco. As long as we are 2-3 players short, we will not be a serious contender on the world stage.

Tony - great comments all around. Absolutely right about the lack of options...i'm a big fan of Danny and Fernandes, but they're out for months. We don't have many more options than what was on the field yesterday. We had some young defenders who were showing promise like Antunes and Da Costa, but they fell off the map in Serie A so CQ's options are quite limited. People need to have realistic expectations about this team. While qualification out of this group shouldn't have been a problem, this is not an elite team.

All of that said, I still believe that CQ was a terrible choice (as i have said on this site since the day he was hired) and should be replaced. His idea of inspiration was Boa Morte, who really hasn't been good since his Fulham days. Carvalho had no business being on the field given his injuries and lack of playing time. CQ continues to talk the talk but can't back it up. He's been an absolute failure.

I also agree that Miguel and Bos should be the wingbacks....don't care what side that they play on. This team has to live or die with CR, Simao and Almeida upfront. Nani is not ready and i'm not sure he ever will be. Quaresma is in the same category as is Veloso. I'm not a huge Moutinho fan, but i think he would have been a better option than Deco. I'm sick of these guys who aren't in their own first teams getting serious playing time for the selecao.

Bottom line, i think qualification is unlikely and this team needs to regroup with a new coach for 2012.
I think Portugal will qualify!

First i want to congratulate my team Albania for playing such a wonderful game ( to our standards) against a team like Portugal that needs no introduction.
Portugal didn't deserve to win, but this is soccer what can you do, things like these happen.
I think that teams like Portugal make the World Cup more interesting, so i wish you luck in the remaining matches.
Considering that Albania has to play closed, diffensive soccer againt teams like Portugal, i think that with Denmark and Hungary it will be easier for Portugal to play their passing flowing game, and score goals.
But i really think that like someone mentioned here, you have to play with Nuno Gomez up front, and let Ronaldo move in the center, and flanks to create chances or even score from the distance.

All the best to Portugal, from Kosova

Alves Goal Saves CQ and Adds to Our Suffering
27 Sunday, 07 June 2009 20:56
We still have a slim chance to qualify and our best bet is nd place. The Bruno Alves goal saved CQ's job and prolonged a short hopes and suffering to put up with subpar soccer.

CQ is a problem with his selection but his options are limited. I hear people calling out for some former players and young players but please remember that many of our players are not performing well at club level, are injured, and have not developed. Lets look at this objectively:

Maniche -- has been in out of the club dog house last years -- a incosistent player in decline
Tiago - was at dog house at Juventes but played better still not the player many thought he would be (Viera from France)
Fernandes - Has potential with his physical presence but a mental case, started to play better but got injured and is out for months.
Danny - One of the few Portuguese players with rising stock ... had a chance to go to Chelsea but is out for months.

Moutinho - Know for leadership at a young age but lacks creativity, impact on game ... a nice player but will not will not create an impact. A mid EPL player at best ... not many offers from top clubs.
Veloso - lacks maturity and now best offer he can get is Bolton -- enough said
Nani - ManU is ready to get rid of him ... a disappoint though he has some hope. He is responsible for our collapse against Denmark by giving the ball away foolishly and lead to a Denmark counter goal to tie the game at 1-1. After that we fell a part.
Quaresama - a bust outside of Portugal, in decline and has done nothing at the national level. At 25 maybe too late to chance what you are --- overrated.

Miguel - great right back when in form but got fat and injured last few years. Defense was better when he was in there. Move him back to RB and Boswin to LB (played for Chelsea against Barca)

Looking at the recent U-17 to U-21 scores we have little in terms of quality players coming up, in fact many of these players are on small clubs and play no major role. There are a few defenders that have potential. I don't see huge offers for most of these younger players -- not a good sign.

We can blame QR for some of his insane picks and tactics but we are in trouble due to lack of quality and young player development. Brace yourself for the late 80s and early 90s.

Also, lets give our friends from Albania some credit for their effort. They made a great effort and need to be commended. Praise the other team but be fair and critical of your team -- in this case Portugal deserves credit for their will to win but critize for the quality of play.
don't underrate albania
26 Sunday, 07 June 2009 19:00
to the person who said "They played lousy, sloppy and let's not forget it was Albania"

albania played really well don't underrate them cause they have couple of great great players there that really made portugals game in tirana a struggle despite the last minute save albania has great players in leagues of europe

Carlos Querioz should Quit or get fired immediately. Bringing Boa Morte for WHAT? A good death for Portugal that is what his name means and is exactly what it will do for portugal, it's like playing a man down. Our team no longer has that flair and exciting movemnet. The Portuguese federation should fire Madail and Querioz who don't know sh*t about soccer. Bring in a coach and work on builing a solid team with regular starting eleven. We need Maniche, Tiago, Moutinhuo who all have World cup experience. Play Danny and give Mendes a try... not guys like Meriles (Or Mersalis) Deco is done. Querioz you've had a try but you suck, you need to lite a firecracker underneathe these guys. Duda sucks to .. he gave the ball away so many times without pressue. Please portugal bring back some of that fanastic football we were so happy to watch. We struggle with Albania enough said.
No WC 2010
24 Sunday, 07 June 2009 18:41
This was such a poor performance....seriously what a joke of a match. Portugal were extremely lucky to win this game but imo it does not change a thing.
For the past couple of months we have been hearing the same crap from CQ but every match we play in the exact same way, having the same problems and looking nothing like a team. It doesn't matter if we beat Albania because there is no way we are going to win our next couple of games playing like this. And there has been NO improvement shown so I assume the team will carry on like this until CQ leaves.

Queiroz started Luis Boa Morte? Are you serious? This guy has scored 1 goal for West Ham since 2007....we have Simao who's had one hell of a season in Spain and he is benched? That just screams at me that CQ is desperate. Carvalho hasn't lost it...he just isn't match fit, he's barely played for chelsea all season. Unfortunately, Deco seems like he has lost it, poor corners/free kicks, stray passes all over the pitch, a shocking performance. It's a shame because he was one of the best playmakers in the world, we'll miss his skills dearly.
COME ON NOW!
23 Sunday, 07 June 2009 17:37
Where is Miguel Veloso and Manuel Fernandes?!?!?

Don't even get me started on Boa Morte, Hugo Almeida and Meireles..

But then again, who else is going to play efficiently up front??
lucky portugal
22 Sunday, 07 June 2009 10:03
Where still in this but we can do better and have a chance to make it into the world cup if you call up is the squad.

Quim Eduardo Moriera

Bosingwa Miguel Carvalho Alves Meira Caneira Duda

C.Ronaldo Maniche Mortinho Meireles Deco Quresma Nani Simao

Liedson Nuno Gomes
forca portugal
21 Sunday, 07 June 2009 05:30
I certainly agree with those about boa morte starting. That was a bad call up and bruno alves does fit better with rolando as opposed to carvalho. Its sad to see deco like he was today which is why tiago should be brought in as midfielder. In terms of who plays goal this is tough because ricardo is somewhat of a joke and eduardo is better but not by much and Quim allowed the 2 late goals against denmark. It is time to play either nani or simao even though i believe nani creates better spacing and better dribbling. Also why don't they play in 4-5-1. i mean striker is still a problem but at least almeida is somewhat of physical player. It is now a 3 team battle for 2nd. With sweden losing to denmark we are 4 ponts behind second place hungary who we play twice and 3 points ahead of sweden. If we come out strong against denmark then there's no doubt in my mind that we will qualify
portugal still alive
20 Sunday, 07 June 2009 05:17
Obviously the squad has kinks to still work out but the team gained a vital 3 points.
Oh dear God!!!!
19 Sunday, 07 June 2009 04:44
If Portugal were playing against a slightly better team, they would have lost. A win yes, but barely.

C'mon guys, smarten up. We'll see if this is the big turnaround match.
Estonia
18 Sunday, 07 June 2009 01:50
I sincerely hope Quieroz plays all the "A" team against Estonia because they need to learn how to play that awesome football that they played at the world cup in 2006. They have good enough players, but the playing scheme is not working. One problem is that we have guys like Boa Morte who should not even be there. The other problem is that Portugal have the best player in the world and can't figure out where he will do the most good: winger or forward?? Cristiano Ronaldo is the most talented player on the field at all times, Quieroz needs to use him properly and get the right group of players around him. He needs to get them to play like a team, not a bunch of very talented individuals. If he can't, Portugal will lose to Denmark and most likely Hungary at least once.
What??? this isnt PORTUGAL!
17 Saturday, 06 June 2009 23:45
Ya maybe were still in it and ya we got 3 points so what we should of lost that game for all i care. that would of woken us up. I was swearing at my t.v when i saw Boa Morte playing instead of Simao and Nani. Edinho needs to go bring in Orlando Sa, Carlos your not afraid to try Boa Morte over Simao and Nani but afraid to call up Quaresma? Come on Quaresma is still 1000 times better than Boa Morte even when hes injured!

Carvalho is done i have to agree the injuries are getting to him play Rolando with Alves thats the next big pair for us.
Duda sucks no matter where you put him,Pepe is depressed and sketchy but carlos still plays him? Where is fernandes?
Eduardo? i dunno if hes the guy maybe try Fernandes or BETO!
yeah portugal are still alive
16 Saturday, 06 June 2009 23:43
i think they did fanantastic to win in injury time. i am disappointed they didn't bring on Nuno Gomes...he would have scored a few goals for sure!
SP
SYDNEY
Yes this was a win...
15 Saturday, 06 June 2009 23:16
But Portugal failed to dominate the game...how can you give up a goal in just a minute???? That was BS!!! Portugal did win but it was not an impressive win.

They played lousy, sloppy and let's not forget it was Albania. Let's see how they play against Denmark.
Lucky Lucky Portugal
14 Saturday, 06 June 2009 22:40
Once again CQ runs his mouth all week saying how well the team was going to be on Saturday, and yet again they fail to impress...I mean we can't even play a decent game against Albania...Lucky for him Bruno Alves saved the day...It wasn't pretty, but I'll take the 3 points...

Forca Portugal
dominate where???
13 Saturday, 06 June 2009 22:36
hey portugal won the game, very lucky but survived and gave them a second chance. dissappointed the way they played like crap. quieroz called up new players for what, its still the same old team. queiroz said "they were dominated all positions". domintaed where, let me see nowhere. this old team can not win anymore they getting old or something is wrong. queiroz should have started nani, moutinho. players that are no good no more and i feel bad about this and they are deco, carvalho, meireles, simao. the team still needs to be fixed alot. lets hope the game vs estonia is an improvement.
bad player selection!
12 Saturday, 06 June 2009 21:59
I don't understand how you stat boa morte instead of simao or nani. Duda didn't have a very great game either. It's like we have the best player in the world but we play the slowest paced games. Deco is done already for the national team he doesn't know how to complete pass or even free kick. And as much as Ronaldo is portugal's golden boy it doesn't seem like he knows how to play on a team (for national team at least) because he only passes the ball when he in no way possible can shoot the ball. I think that quieroz isn't a bad coach but he is not the coach for the portuguese national team. Now that figo is retired maybe we should make him head coach. Alot of the players would play hard for him because of how respected he is in portuguese and international soccer. We need to bring up different players because like this we won't qualify and if we do we won't make it past the group stage. Oh yea get rid of Eduardo because he is not the best portuguese goalie.
Sack Queiroz please.............
11 Saturday, 06 June 2009 21:34
Time to sack quieroz now...
its now or never...he has just ruined our team..totally destroyed it..no consistensy n he never gets d correct players..
i can't take it any more...today's performance was one of the worse ever...dis is not d same portugal we used to see under Scolari..bring scolari back plzzz Portuguese federation do something..if not scolari den get rid of queiroz at any cost..oderwise i dont see us qualifying....
boa morte starting?? :O he hardly ever plays for west ham now...no moutinho...wat a bizzarre selection...
plzzzzzzzzzzz sack queiroz...
bruno alves saved d day but if we hav to save our Portugal...den havto get rid of queiroz...
my thoughts on tonight's game
10 Saturday, 06 June 2009 21:27
Deco should no longer be taking ANY corner kick or free kick. he gets no lift on the ball and the kicks are always short. Barca realized this, let him go, and Barca picks up 3 trophies... Meireles is horrible. Does ONE beautiful pass make up for all his other mistakes? I wouldn't think it does... Boa Morte??? I didn't know he still played... Lastly, Queiroz better be taking Bruno Alves out on the town. He saved him his job (for now)!

... Does it seem like everyone who plays Portugal now stack their defensive with 8 (sometimes 9) players? Kinda hard to score when there's no space/angles. Does Queiroz not see this tactic?
Not deserving of the victory, Good for Alves though.
9 Saturday, 06 June 2009 21:03
First of all Boa Morte starting over Nani and or Simao was ridiculous. Good thing the most dominant (in the world.) central defender in the air showed up to save the pretty boy's rear end. Oh yea Carvalho and Deco cant play anymore.
We'll Take the Win
8 Saturday, 06 June 2009 20:56
Not pretty and still some concerns about the quality of play but we'll take the win and regroup. We just need to keep winning and get to at least 2nd place in the group.

The quality of play continues to frustrate and is unwatchable at times. This is a team out of sync.

I've given Carlos Q the benefit of the doubt and put the root cause of Portugal's problems with the lack of a striker and the younger players not developing but I think Carlos is mad by starting Boa Morte. Boa Morte is no longer a quality player and speaks to how far we have regressed if he starts for Portugal. I can't understand why Simao didn't start and even the under performing Moutinho (don't understand all the praise -- he may be a good leader but has no impact on a game) and Nani would have been a better selection.

Carvalho used to be a quality player but injuries have caught up to him, don't understand why he started and he almost lost the game for us. Miereles for the first time wearing a Portugal shirt after a poor performance finally had touch that lead to a end product (Bruno Alves goal).

Lets celebrate the victory, rest, and regroup. Lets hope some of players develop and Carlos Q gets sane again. Maybe we are better off not qualitfy so we don't embrass our country at the World Cup in 2010.
Portugal Wake Up call
7 Saturday, 06 June 2009 20:53
Now that club is over, Portugal made it out w/ luck. Alves saved the day. Now for the friendly, call quaresma up, save the wings. forget about Boa and edinho and have nani and ronaldo up as LM and RM. this game was luck, but we will take it. we always struggle w/ qualifiers but holy hell was everyone on the edge of their seats.
