Nelson gives U20s vital win

Vale's men overcome Cameroon

A neatly-taken goal from Benfica youngster Nelson Oliveira was enough to give Portugal a crucial victory over Cameroon, one which leaves them on the verge of qualification for the knockout phase of the Under-20 World Cup.

After a sluggish opening against Uruguay, Ilidio Vale rang the changes for this second group match, with Julio Alves, Caetano and Alex replacing Sana, Sergio Oliveira and Rafael Lopes in the starting line-up - though the first two changes were enforced by suspensions. At any rate, the new arrivals had the desired effect, with Portugal appearing on the whole a far more cohesive unit - although they were undoubtedly aided in this by their opponents, who were individually and collectively inferior to Uruguay. Portugal showed themselves capable of opening Cameroon up early and often, with Nelson drawing a fine save from Efala after thirteen minutes. The chance was preceded by some neat build-up play, orchestrated by the diminutive Caetano.

Under such circumstances, a goal was a must, and it came after nineteen minutes. A searching pass forward from captain Nuno Reis appeared fairly innocuous, but Cameroon twice failed to clear, Mvom instead diverting the ball towards goal and putting Nelson clean through. The Benfica forward kept his head, and cooly lifted the ball over the goalkeeper's head from inside the penalty box. In spite of the comedy that led to the goal, the manner in which Nelson converted will have pleased his coach no end. Indeed, the runs of Oliveira and Alex troubled Cameroon throughout the contest.

Once ahead, Portugal ceded some of the initiative to their opponents, although they rarely looked in danger of conceding an equaliser. Mika pulled off an eye-catching but fairly routine save in the 65th minute, but it was largely a quiet evening for the Benfica man. Cameroon finished the contest with more possession (54 versus 46%), shots (17 versus 10) and corner kicks (7 versus 5), but had the stuffing knocked out of them in the 71st minute, when Mvom completed a miserable outing with a straight red.

Ilidio Vale pronounced himself satisfied with "an excellent victory over a difficult opponent", and confirmed that despite only needing a point from Friday's final group match against New Zealand (which is slated for a 23:00 Lisbon time kick-off), Portugal will be going for all three - as a victory guarantees that the squad can remain in Cali as Group B winners; before relocating to Cartagena for a potential quarter-final.

Elsewhere in Colombia, the hosts qualifed for the next phase with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Mali. Porto's James Rodriguez grabbed his second goal in as many matches, and was once again the outstanding performer. Sporting right-back Santiago Arias also completed the full ninety minutes once again.

I agree that Bruno Vale is not a great Manager and it shows..

Caetano is excellent hard worker.. who as others stated should be slapped for diving.. but besides that he was exceptional.

Mika who started poorly.. made an amazing finger tip save.. and is definitely a player to watch.

Danillo started poor but ended well..

Pele should be benched for life.. his selfish play deserved a spanking.

Nelson Oliveira was amazing.. and I think most are extremely hard on this young lad.. the first ball he struck on the hop and it barely went over.. the second he outright flubbed the third was a finger tip save.. and the fourth was a goal.. all in less than 20 mins.. he could've already had 4 by that point.. and he was punishing Cameroon all night..

The team was unlucky not to win by 4 or more.. Pele especially ruined that.. as others were wide open with a gaping net when he roof daddied two shots... he was a disgrace.

Overall great performance.. looking forward to Friday..

This side is capable of amazing periods of football, usually followed by some lackluster disinterested play. Pre tournament favourites spain and brasil IMO have flattered to deceive in their matches. Nigeria have looked good however portugal easily disposed of them in a pre tournament friendly, this tournament is anyones at this stage. Those touted columbia obviously didn't watch their game verse portugal at toulon, IMO they were lucky to escape with a draw.

This team is stacked with players with immense potential, Mika is the best young portuguese keeper i have seen, the kid is solid, he was our best player at toulon and has continued his amazing form. Eduardo should be more worried about this kid not Patricio. In terms of potential Sergio Oliveira is the equal of Mika, lets not forget what this guy can do, however his maturity levels and attitude are questionable. But the performances of the likes of Danilo, Soares, Sana are really the consistency of performance required at a senior football level. Ofcourse their are alot of players i havn't mentioned but it overall i dont think people should underestimate the quality of individual players their are within this side, however i would question the tactical nous of Ilidio Vale.

Forca Portugal!!
Time to get behind them people with that famous portuguese optimism haha

Watching Portugal play is frustrating, they could have had this game in the bag, instead I am sweating the last 25 minutes. I don't know if it's a cultural thing or just selfish kids, but especially pele that goof had 2 glorious opportunities to pass and instead shot, and shot high, as well as Oliveira glorious chances to pass but instead tries to go up the middle to take on 3 guys. As for caetano good player but his diving was embarrasing and theatrical when are these guys going to smarten up, Don't they know the rep they have? More upset with the selfish play though.

This game was much better. I really liked the defence, especially Mário Rui in the second half. The guy is obviously better than Shaffer and probably at Carole's level, so shame on Benfica for letting him go (even if it was a wage war, as it was with Sílvio, probably a small pay rise would be better than buying yet another argentinian). But I digress.

Up front Nélson Oliveira was great, even more considering he was a lone striker and Cameroon were strong physically. I vote Caetano as man of the match, although his dive was disgustful and even though the sending off for the kick on him was correct, he exaggerated. I hope the coach talks to him about it.

I'm starting to think that I'm biased against Danilo Pereira, although I see no reason for that. Everyone lauds yet another great performance by the midfielder but I saw nothing more than a slow player who only knows how to pass to the defence or to the sides, there's no trying to make killer passes. Pelé was slightly better, although that miss is unforgivable.

Let's hope the NZ keeper is not as inspired as against Uruguay for Portugal to go through.

Hi Mike,

Caetano plays for Paços, has flown under the radar somewhat due to an injury that kept him out for most of last season. He came through Porto's youth system but joined Paços in 2010.

A Few Players Really Stood Out

First of all, as with every National Portuguese game, senior or junior, you cannot be fooled by the scoreline. This game definitely should have been 4-0 for Portugal given Nuno Reis hit the post with a great header, Nelson Oliveira scuffed a great opening on goal, and Pele indulged himself with a skyward shot in one instance in the box, when Caetano was clearly open 3 feet to his left.

I was really impressed with Danilo Pereira. He played a great box-to-box midfielder roll yesterday, making several impressive tackles, marshaling the midfield, and starting counter attacks with a few great passes. The commentator even compared him to a young Patrick Viera at the end of the game.

Mika was also stellar. This article portrayed his game as non-eventful, but he made at least five great saves yesterday, and was great when claiming the ball during set pieces. He was also solid against Uruguay, so this guy's performance definitely wasn't a fluke. He's really calm under pressure.

Nuno Reis looks like a really good, scrappy centre-back in the vein of Pepe.

For me, Nelson Oliveira is as confusing as any other Portuguese striker of the past 20 years. He shows moments of great skill, strength, and ball control, and scores the occasional impressive goal like he did yesterday, but his finishing ability lets him down way too often. It's odd considering the substantial technical ability he seems to possess. I thought his game suffered from his eagerness to drop back and help out the midfield, however, as he needs to linger around that box in a traditional target man roll. The midfield was performing well anyway.

Caetano also played a decent game. He's quick, dribbles well, and has a great first touch. Oddly enough, he seems eager to help out the defense, despite his diminutive stature. He looks to be another decent Portuguese winger (surprise, surprise, another winger).

Very good game compared to the first game. I was really impressed by Nelson and Caetano. Nelson the Benfica youngster should be coming up the ranks soon and future looks promising for country and club.

Well played Portugal, lets see on Friday.

... is having himself one hell of a summer! First he captains Colombia and wins in Toulon, and so far he's been fantastic in the first 2 games... he's got a year under his belt in Portugal already so he's past the 'adaptation' phase, and I expect he's gonna explode this season....

I saw bits n pieces of Portugal - Cameroon, but I don't get the feeling this is a very strong side... 1-0 against Cameroon and the goal comes off a complete gift from the defender?! props to Oliveira on an excellent finish though!

Why are you claiming bad reporting? I agree with you that they played terribly the second half but Ben did explain that they took the foot off the gas after the goal. There was only one real threat after the goal and Mika took care of it.

Overall, I think they should have scored more. Too many missed opportunities but we'll take the win. Caetano was outstanding and Reis was solid. Looking forward to Friday.

This coach reminds of our past National Team coach who got fired. We conceded play to Cameroon? WTH. It was a joke watching the second half, either we don't have the talent or this coach sucks. I was watching Portugal play kick ball.
