Three things to look out for in Poland v Portugal friendly

Key performers to be tested in Warsaw

Euro 2012Portugal face Poland on Wednesday in what will be the first of just three friendly games leading up to their opening Euro 2012 match versus Germany on 9 June. Philip Benevides looks at three aspects of the match against the co-hosts that could provide significant pointers as regards how Paulo Bento will set up his team in the summer.

Paulo Bento selected a similar 23-man squad to that used throughout the qualifiers with the surprise inclusion of 20 year old Benfica striker, Nelson Oliveira. Manuel Fernandes is also awarded a call-up in the wake his recent good form for a Besiktas side containing five Portuguese players, three of whom are included in this squad. Danny, a regular feature with the Seleccao, was not selected as he will be sidelined for “an estimated eight months” due to injury.

1.  Nelson Oliveira to make his debut

Capped over 50 times at youth levels and scoring 26 goals throughout, the talk of Nelson Oliveira becoming Portugal’s next in line striker gathered steam following his excellent displays in the U20 World Cup in Colombia last year and Jorge Jesus’ subsequent decision not to loan him out.

Early in the season, Jesus used Oliveira in Benfica’s cup games.
The powerfully built striker scored his first goals against Santa Clara and Maritimo in the League Cup, pushing himself into contention in liga matches. He has made his way up the pecking order ahead of Saviola and the recently acquired Yannick Djalo to become Jesus’ number three striker.

Most of the time he features as a substitute for current starters Rodrigo and Cardozo, but his effectiveness given his limited playing time can be felt through his height and deadly left foot. Debuting for Portugal this Wednesday would cap off an already positive year for Nelson Oliveira and boost the youngster’s confidence approaching the final quarter of the season.

2.  Veloso/Postiga continuing National Team form

Last time out versus the Bosnians in a two-legged playoff, key performances were seen in midfield and the striker role in the form of Miguel Veloso and Helder Postiga respectively.

The defensive midfielder role has not been successfully filled since the retirement of Costinha and Petit. Several attempts have been made to fill a position on the pitch, the importance of which is continuously discussed in football tactics, through the likes of Pedro Mendes, Pepe, Raul Meireles and Tiago.

When it was Miguel Veloso’s turn, we saw a return of the form that the ex-Sporting player displayed at U21 level, capping off the playoff tie when a superb free-kick goal was curled over the wall and into the back of the net.

The second key performance from Portugal was shown through the complete game demonstrated by Helder Postiga. Not only did the striker get on the score sheet with two fantastic finishes, but Postiga also impressed defensively cutting off passing lanes and ensuring the Bosnians’ only possession was between their defenders as they were pushed back into their own third.

It will be interesting to see if both these players continue this form on route to securing spots in Paulo Bento’s XI. Should they do so, Portugal’s chances of success in Poland and Ukraine will be significantly improved.

3.  What role for Carlos Martins, Ruben Micael and Manuel Fernandes?

Since Paulo Bento took over the Seleccao from Carlos Queiroz, he has confidently selected Carlos Martins to represent Portugal and surprised fans with the introduction of Ruben Micael. Carlos Martins, who was a regular at Benfica, became a starter for Bento and Micael, who played very few minutes at Porto, came on as a regular second half substitute. However, given the success of Portugal’s new midfield trio (Veloso, Moutinho and Meireles) in the Bosnia matches, it will be interesting to see how much longer this experiment will last.

Manuel Fernandes, once a promising youngster and part of the same U21 generation that consisted of Veloso and Moutinho, has made his way back onto the national scene with his regular football and prominent role at Besiktas. You would have to begin to think that if Manuel Fernandes features against Poland and plays to his potential, Martins and Micael will move down the list and a decision will be needed to be made come June.

Update: Since this article was written Carlos Martins has had to drop out of the squad through injury. Paulo Machado has been called up to replace him.

It's not just injuries I am speaking of....but just the timing of the international friendlies and the possible consequences in general. If you ask me, it's disorganisation on the part of Uefa. The internationals should not have taken place in between 2 legs of Champions league competition, they should've taken place either just before or just after the CL round of 16. Or if they were going to take place now, they should've happened on a weekend, and as a result the domestic Euro league fixtures for that weekend put forward.

I repeat it's crazy for the players concerned having to play 3 big matches (including lots of travelling for some) in just 1 week. Uefa's organisation leaves a lot to be desired...and this is not just for Benfica and Porto, but for all the clubs and players facing the same situation over the next week. BTW...who wrote that post with the subject "Friendlies" under my name (Andre/UK)? It wasn't me!!! But i agree with the points which whoever it was made!!!

That a boy Phil looking forward to more of your posts. Hopefully Nelson O can become a clinical finisher that both Benfica and Portugal will be able to rely on. He missed some vital oppurtinities for Benfica last game.
Benfica/Porto Internationals

@Andre/UK .. Hilarious that you are concerned about Benfica/Porto players in the National team getting injured. The probability of zero players getting injured is zero!
(of course I'm exaggerating .. 1 or 2 players that are subs at SLB/FCP wow no biggie)
Friendlies

I fully agree that they timing of these matches are horrible. If any Porto or Benfica players get injured in any of their various international matches, you know the fans will be crying foul if their team loses this Friday in the classico.

I heard that while they were going to cut back the end Aug friendlies they were going to format the current schedule so that there are less one off matches and more back to back matches so national team coaches can have more time with their squads.

Personally I think its better playing 9 matches in which more of these are back to back vs. 12 random matches. A coach can work/train with a team over a longer period to get a better feel for their talent and squad formations.
2 big matches in the space of just 2 days is crazy!!!

Chris/Tampa made a point regarding how international friendlies will be cut down soon..I know all club managers will suppourt this. I must admit that at the moment, I think these international friendlies have come up at an incovenient time totally...in between important CL first and second legs...why weren't the friendlies scheduled for before the CL round of 16 when there was nothing but league matches occuring...or just after the round of 16? It's a stressful situation for the players who will have to play on 3 fronts over the next week: international, league and then crucial CL second legs. Any injuries to players tomorrow will infuriate the club managers concerned, and rightly so!

Some Benfica and Porto players will have to play in an international friendly tomorrow and then travel back to Portugal to play the most important match in the Portuguese League just 2 days later...am I the only one who thinks this schedule is absolutely crazy? At the very least the Portuguese FA should've moved the Classico to saturday to give the players concerned an extra day to prepare. As a Benfica fan, on this particular occasion I am happy we have no players playing for the seleccao...imagine we did? It's just crazy for players to have to play two big matches in the space of a couple of days. As a result, while i will watch the seleccao tomorrow and am interested to see how they do...there is no question that I am much more focused on the Classico on friday night. There's no question which is the most important match in my mind at least...
excellent post Eddie

I agree with almost everything you said.

Nelson Oliveira is a complete striker. Almeida's got physicality, Postiga's got technical ability and finesse, but they don't have much else in their games. Postiga does tend to play very well for the Seleccao, but I still think that Bento should give Nelson Oliveira the start tomorrow. Give him 60 minutes or so to play with the likes of Ronaldo, Nani, and Moutinho. Let's see what he can do. Like you said, Nelson's the complete package, but since he's still only 20, he is far from a finished product. However, I still think that he can do great things for the seleccao now if given a chance.

With regards to Fernandes vs Meireles, I agree that Fernandes' decision making is or was his achilles heel. However, since he has seemed to work incredibly hard on improving the mental aspects of his game, I believe that he can be a more useful member to the starting 11 than Meireles. Like you said, Meireles has been the most consistent player for us since the last Euro, but he isn't as talented or well rounded as Fernandes. Manny's much better technically and physically while being just as good, if not better at the technical aspects of the game.

Hopefully Bento gives Oliveira and Fernandes a chance tomorrow. I'd also like to see Hugo Viana and Paulo Jorge get a call-up before Bento picks his final squad, but that looks unlikely.
change midfield trio
7 Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:30
can you imagine mid trio(meireles, veloso, moutinho) versus
germany, netherland, denmark?

definitely no.
The defence of last game mid trio(meireles, veloso, moutinho)
is trivial.
it doesn't make sense versus germany(Schweinsteiger, khedira),netherland (van vomel,Nigel de Jong)

our mid trio's weak point is that we can't pass, keep under physical pressure
That match don't convey the ball to ronaldo, nani

So, NT definitely needs player like makelele, gattuso
hustle player is manuel fernandes
but he don't play well on defence midfield
He plays well on box-to-box midfield

Therefore, my thought of mid tro is moutiho, veloso, fernandes

and in the long term, we have promising hustle player is
danilo pereira in parma
He will play tomorrow u-21 NT

Forca portugal!!!
I want to see portugal win Euro
Good Points

Good points about what to look out for. To me its obvious and Paulo Bento is a straightforward man and he sees it as well. Nelson Oliveira is the most talented striker in the group. Plain and simple he can do things with the football, that the other two cannot. He is vastly more dynamic, skillful, faster, and physically gifted. In the past we've tended to play Postiga for a more technical link up play, and we've tented to play Almeida for a more physical robust presence up top in the play. The two strikers GLARINGLY lack the traits of their opposite counterpart. Postiga shows no physical strength in asserting his presence whatsoever, and Almeida is a bumbling clumsy wasteful striker. We have all watched Nelson Oliveira play and we can all see that Nelson is the total package, and while he is not the finished article yet, he is gifted as a complete striker! He has technique, and strength, AND he has great speed which neither Postiga or Almeida have. I thank God that we have gotten a striker in the mold and caliber of Nelson Oliveira, and even more so at a time like this when he can come into a team that is blessed with the best wingers in the world alongside him. I am completely convinced that the trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Nelson Oliveira, and Nani will be a magical trio! In my mind Almeida is not even worthy of any starts any more, he's had his chance and wasted farrrr too many, and like I noted in a previous post, to bring the best out of Ronaldo he needs to be paired with a complete mobile striker who can not only score, but can also assist as well! This is why Postiga for me is better than Almeida for the national team, and the statistics and the results show just that! Postiga plain and simple is an enigma. His club career is horrible, but for some reason, when he plays for Portugal he transforms and plays 110% and actually plays well! I respect Postiga for this and I actually admire his heart for Portugal and he is a player that is clearly technically gifted and has good skill, vision, and finishing abilities. His weaknesses are his lack of pace and power. He is a good striker for Portugal, but we now have another option and that man is incredibly more gifted in every department of football and that man is Nelson Oliveira! To me it is a gift from God, that we've gotten a truly top class caliber striker (while still young) to compliment the greatest wing forward ever in the game in Cristiano Ronaldo! Cristiano Ronaldo will be able to play at his full speed if he is playing with Nelson Oliveira. Nelson has the speed to play with Ronaldo and Nani to combine to form devastating potent counter attacks, if we should need to. Ronaldo is a beast on counter attacks and having a striker that can not only keep up but match that pace alongside him, will be phenomenal! And also Nelson has the skill to actually take players on one on one and beat players on his own, and in so doing drawing more defenders to himself which would free up space for Ronaldo and Nani, and Nelson also has vision and is a good assister/passer of the ball! I would definitely start Nelson as my first choice striker and I think Paulo Bento will do it as well! In regards to the midfield, Veloso is the man for the defensive midfield starting spot, with Meireles and Moutinho completing the midfield trio. The three of them are simply world class technically and can dominate possession in the field against any team. They are all superb passers of the ball as well with great vision, and they all have good footwork and skill as well. The three of them have formed a great partnership and I would leave it just as it is, regardless of Chelsea's struggles. I am however happy that Manuel Fernandes has made it back onto the national team, and I hold him in high regard! He is a top class midfielder without a doubt! The problem for him has been his whole career , is trying to do too much , trying to hold onto the ball too long, at times, over complicating it in the midfield which is an area where you generally want to keep it classy. He also for years has misunderstood his role, and as a holding midfielder or box to box midfielder you cannot away possession cheaply in the middle of the field against the run of play (like he is notorious for doing time and again) because it will leave your team unprotected, vulnerable, and most likely to concede a goal which most times happens. That has always been his problem. Its not a matter of whether he lacks the skill, or the ability, or the physical quality athleticism etc, because he clearly has all that. Its been his mental maturity, game decision making, and tactical awareness, that have been keeping him down for years! Finally in Besiktas he seems to have ironed out most of the mistakes in his game and he has been playing very well and seems to be a much better wiser player now. I admire that and I'm happy for him, BUT I still don't trust him 100%. I definitely want him on the team, but as a substitute not as a starter. Meireles has class and technique and all but less skill than Fernandes, but in all the areas i just mentioned Fernandes lacking, Meireles is vastly superior! Meireles is renowned particularly for those very traits! He is a very key player for the national team as he has been for yearssss! Sure Chelsea are going through their struggles, but Meireles is not to be blamed for all that as some idiots are trying to make it. Chelsea has NUMEROUS issues in their defense and attack that are damning consistently. Anyway, I think we should remember that Raul Meireles has been Mr. Consistent for the national team over the last 3 years and he has been a leader in the midfield for us time and again! His vast experience and leadership in midfield are priceless and for that reason I would continue to start him, with Veloso, and Moutinho completing the trio. My first midfielder off the bench would then be Manuel Fernandes.
Nelson

Can’t wait to see how we do with this team given how they are the hosts and will be the most motivated opponent out of our 3 friendly to push our team.

You can’t help but be excited for Nelson getting a call up. There hasn’t been an exciting youth striker in Portugal in some time. He has the speed, height, and potential to fit that prefect forward that most clubs and nations want to see from their strikers. One of his biggest holdbacks in the U-20 was that our team was defensive minded. You could see his potential when we would attack and the idea of having better support players like Ronaldo and Nani next to him just made the idea of this guy on the national team that more exciting. It left most of us wishing he was a bit older or Ronaldo was a bit younger so they could play together.

My only fear is that he sits on the bench and doesn’t get a fair chance on the field. Here’s hoping he’s that last missing key to become a championship team.
Poland vs. Portugal

Unfortunately it's looking like Lewandowski is going to miss the game due to injury. Hopefully both nations will be going with their strongest XIs, Poland definitely will. I will be looking forward to seeing Piszczek vs. Ronaldo/Nani.
Forca Portugal

I would really love to see what Oliveira's got...now is the time to get another striker ready. Even if he's not mature enough for Euro 2012, we will have a head start on Brazil 2014.

I like Fernandes in the midfield....IF he can figure out how to track back on defense. Once he figures that out, he'll have my vote ahead of Meireles and Veloso (although they aren't bad options either).

I think Portugal win 2-1. Cristiano Ronaldo and Postiga with the goals. Lewandoski for Poland.
Lineup
2 Tuesday, 28 February 2012 14:28
Veloso, Moutinho, Meireles would always be my preferred midfield lineup so I'd like to see him stick to that.
The Selecao has needed a good new striker for years so it will be interesting to see how Nelson Oliveira shapes up.
International Fixtures

It looks as if the international calendar is going to be cut from 12 games a year to 9, which means friendlies such as this where coaches get to try new players and experiment will be lessened and international managers will get even less time with their teams.
