Ronaldo: “Nothing is impossible if you have ambition”

Match reaction after Portugal draw in Poland

Ronaldo and Paulo BentoPaulo Bento and Portugal’s players were reasonably satisfied after drawing at the home of the Euro 2012 co-hosts Poland tonight. A contained optimism was evident as the protagonists gave their reaction to the goalless draw in Warsaw.

Paulo Bento, Portugal coach:

“We played an excellent first half, when we were closer to our identity and our way of playing. We had a lot of quality in the way we dominated the game and in our attacking transitions. We created several chances and at the break the score did not translate what had happened.

“In the second half we had less quality and played some loose passes, allowing our opponents to break quickly, and at the end Poland could have scored. I don't think it’s a fair result, but I’m happy with the honest shift put in by the players. It served to observe different players and help us make decisions.

“It’s too early to have the squad totally defined. We have kept a coherent line of thought, an identity and a stability in our options. There are a few months to go until the leagues finish, but if nothing untoward happens, this stability will remain our philosophy.”

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal captain:

“We always have to have the ambition to be the best. Portugal’s going to the Euro with the ambition to win it. We know it’s a difficult mission and we have to take it one step at a time.  Is it possible we can win the Euro? Nothing is impossible if you have ambition. But we have to stay humble and with our feet on the ground. We must realise that it’s going to be tough.

“I hope the Portuguese support the Seleccao like they did in 2004, putting flags up in their houses and singing songs about Portugal. The Seleccao is the club of all the Portuguese. We all have to pull in the same direction.”

Joao Moutinho:

“Overall we did well but we have room for improvement. At the Euro every team is a candidate to win it but first we have to get through the group phase and then think about other targets.”

Nelson Oliveira, Portugal debutant:

“It was a hugely proud moment for me, a dream that I have had since I was a child. I have a long history in the national team youth levels but this is a different kind of emotion and I hope to repeat it.”

Rui Patricio, Portugal goalkeeper:

“We have excellent goalkeepers who give guarantees to Paulo Bento. We have worked hard, myself, Beto and Eduardo, and we are all well prepared. The most important thing is the evolution of the team and the work we have to do to have an excellent Euro.

“We are in a strong group but we have to think only about ourselves and ask the fans to support us so that we can be even stronger.”

A wasted opportunity

I think the whole thing was a wasted opportunity. Coentrao got injured and we didn't learn a thing (except maybe Almeida isn't very good).

I would have liked to see Nelson Oliveira up front, with CR and Nani on the wings, Viana and Moutinho as mids, with Manny as a defensive mid, and coentrao, pepe, the guy from apoel(I forget his name now), and joao pereira at the back. Then start substituting players from there eg. Postiga, Meireles, bruno alves, and see which combinations work best.

Also, I don't think Nani is a selfish player. I think he just doesn't trust Almeida.
No hope in my eyes

I believe this is one of the weakest cohesive teams Portugal has produced in the last 3 decades. We will not progress out of the group phase without a huge amount of luck - maybe the other teams in the group will miss their flights.
Midfield

Our midlfield is week in depth. I dont have a problem with Raul, Joao, and Miguel. I believe Moutinho is the most important member of the mid. Bento took him out for the second half and the team fell apart. The problem lies in the substitutions. Fernandes is not good enough, sorry burst some of your bubbles. We need to call up Viana, Custodio, and perhaps Andre Santos. I think it is an easy decision to make, hopefully Bento will do it.
NANI

Very very selfish player!!! this suppose to be a team sport!!
Thoughts

Very much like the Netherlands (I hate the Dutch), Portugal has been able to produce world class talent to sprinkle throughout the Seleccao, but we don't have enough known quality for the bench.
By the way, the Dutch looked old, slow and much too deliberate verse England. Their right and left backs were eaten alive by so so players. If Von Bommel has to constantly roll to Cristianos side, the middle and Nani shoud have great opportunities.

That brings me to the following. Cristiano has always been better at attacking the defense from out wide. Most of his goals and free kicks come from there. If you stick him in the middle it will be much easier to cover him, since defenses won't have to roll his way. That doesn't mean he shouldn't switch ides or move in at times like he does with Real.
Almeida is a physical striker that prefers contact. In my opinion Postiga is well liked because he runs all over the place. I will grant you that he sometimes scores from being a goal poacher, aka Nuno, but sometimes all that running is for naught.
Meireles worries me, because he's had a difficult year at Chelsea. We'll see if he can recover.
I know I'll get killed, but I still think that unless the players around him are playing great, Moutinho will get lost. He disappears way too much, when he could and maybe should be the provider.
Forget Carvalho. Although I thought it was a huge mistake in letting him go, it would be worst to bring him back now. Manager would lose all credibility.
Our bench is awful. I actually agree that some new fesh faces should have been taken to Poland for this one, let them train a bit with the big boys and get the experience even if they don't see the field.
Lastly, what did Oliveira gain from ten minutes. Why not let him see the field for twenty. Even if we would have lost I would preferred to have seen him get acclimated. The best thing I heard was him making all the right statements afterwards. It seems as if he's got a got head on his shoulders.

I really don't know if we can change much at this point. I feel we have the quality to advance, but we are who we are.
I feel that the Dutch are in the very same boat so that's not a bad thing.
I guess I was hoping to see something, and didn't learn or see anything different in this match.
Stiker concern

If Almeida had received the passes when he was open maybe we wouldnt be as worried about lack of goals. Supply to the strikers has been inaccurate.

I agree with comments regarding crafty small players up front, it would help fluidity of our game. If only we had someone to fit that description. Given the players available working toward a system of play that is familiar to the team is a good approach.

The team can create some decent chances but is not able to control an entire match. If they could focus on improving decision making in final third, make players more aware of teammates positions to improve goal output/chances created.
Second focus Id like to see is addressing lapses in concentration, we have too many players that tend to switch off during the game...hard to get results when you only ever have half the team engaged.
Wasted Effort

I know it was just a friendly but you have to win a game in wich you dominated possession like they did tonight. I was happy with the passing in the middle of the pitch but can someone please finish and put one in the back of the goal.

I agree with Edie. When the games count play Postiga and sit Almeida.
portugal bring ricardo carvalho back please

surely why is he not back yet surely ronaldo n the boys can plea wiht bento to bring him back alves another blunder useless he is...daniel carrico should be on the bench,i didn twatch the game but saw nani be elsfish few times ... they need play as a team not for them selfs... fernandes should get the go ahead before merlies ...i like nelson oliveria and nelson right back viana should be in the squad always playin well for braga... we need carvalho lads
Back to the Basics

Raul Meireles is crap .. his days on the National team are done. Paulo Bento has tried to change the style of Portuguese Football with no success. Whats with the long ball? or the... go to the air hoping the tall strikers head in the ball? The top teams in the world have gone to shorter strikers like Italy,Spain,England Argentina. It's not our style.... lets get a couple of crafty little guys inside the 18 yard box.. guys like Messi who make tall defenders look STUPID.I can understand why he may think to go with the taller team, going up against Denmark ,Germany. (I understand the logic) BUT....Paulo Bento should remember going against germany when he was a player his teammates were mainly short crafty and relentless on the ball.
LET'S PLAY OUR STYLE and we may have better luck than we had in the past.
How long did it take for Spain to finally lift their trophies.
Nani

It was obivous that Nani was trying to hard, if he plays like that at the Euro were in trouble.
Tight

The issue for me wasn't the lack of a proper striker like one commenter suggested, it was selfish individual play from Nani. Had he passed off two Almeida on the two clear goal scoring opportunities I saw in the highlights, this game would have finished 2-0.
OK
8 Thursday, 01 March 2012 03:35
I watched the highlights and yes, Nani had the best chances, but what was with the extremely selfish play. He could passed off to Almeida on at least two occasions that I saw for an easy tap in. Nevertheless, for the most part, the team didn't look too bad.
lack of depth

I think every portuguese fan has to be honest with themselves, and recognize the fact that the quality of players on this team is not that impressive. Begining with perreira, i think theres a good reason for why he still plays for sporting. His defending is mediocre but his attacking ability, especially his crossing is poor at best. Nelson is an average player on his best day. Probably why he still plays on Real Betis. The midfielders moutinho, miereles, veloso, and fernandes are all above average, but far from world class. Martins and Micael should never have even recieved a call up, especially considering their lack of playing time on what are some of the worst teams in LaLiga. And then theres the issue with the stirker position. Almeida is mediocre, postiga is a poor striker which is probably why he plays for Zaragoza, and oliveira is questionable especially considering his lack of playing time at club level. Im not trying to be pestimistic, but with Portugal's current squad, I strongly doubt that they will advance past the group stage
No playmaking

Everyone could debate all they want about a striker, but i see the biggest issue portugal face is lack of creativity in the mid field. Whos are xavi, snieder or pirlo? moutinho maybe, but he doesn't really have those qualities. Would have like to see Danny in an attacking mid role.
Too Often its only Nani and Ronaldo creating when they should be serviced with passing. And only then will any of these strikers be able to succeed in the middle of those two.

For the love of all that is holy! USE PARAGRAPHS!!

When writing a comment of biblical proportions, you may want throw in a bit of white space to give your words a little room to breathe and let my eyes have a rest and not explode.

(BAM! Paragraph)

......thanks

In response to your actual comment, I agree Quaresma is poo. In fact half our team is full of selfish egotistical wangs.

Oh I do miss Figo.

Postiga is the biggest joke in European football. The guy could not earn a place in the starting 11 on the worst MLS team. As for Almeida and Oliveira, they are both lacking in quality. CR7 and two other wingers make the most sense.
Right attitude, just needed proper striker.

@JJJ HELL NO! Quaresma is TRASH! He's garbage and should never play for Portugal. He produces nothing substantial. Never passes at the right moment. We have two very good strikers for Portugal to play, just that tonight the horrible lazy garbage 3rd one Hugo Almeida got the majority of the game which he wasted as he ALWAYS does! Don't give me any story about how Nani could have passed to him, sure but so what, with another striker Postiga or N.Oliveira more opportunities would have been created because the two of them actaully have football skill and can control a ball and dribble and pass to connect with other players and bring the team into play! Quaresma is a selfish bastard who should have passed to Nelson on two occasions when Nelson looked for a one two and was in great positions to shoot in the box! Postiga and Nelson Oliveira are both very good and they will do brilliantly well for the national team! Had either of them started and played the majority of this game with the other coming on as the sub , we would have created and scored waaay more opportunities. Postiga and Oliveira are the men for the job! Ronaldo is capable of scoring a ton of goals from the wing like he always does for Real and before Man U, once he has a complete striker like Benzema/Higuain/Rooney/Tevez who can drop and collect the ball beat a defender draw defenders and has the skill to pass and assist Ronaldo as well! We have two of them in Postiga and Oliveira! The time for experimentation and auditions is done! Postiga and Oliveira are the men for the job!

Boy, if they are this selfish in a friendly international when almeida was open for tap in's , imagine when the spotlight is on during the euro's - the nani and ronaldo ego's will reign supreme which of course will be a detriment to the team's campain to win the euro.

Need to play without a striker period! Let Ronaldo be the false 9 since he basically is considered a striker with his amount of goals scored. Put Nani and Quaresma/Varela on the wings. Our midfield is basic crap so the 3 wingers up front will add more possession atleast.
