Paulo Bento’s future decided before Euro 2012

Seleccao rise to fifth place in FIFA ranking

Paulo BentoFernando Gomes, the head of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), yesterday said Paulo Bento will know whether or not he is to continue as the Seleccao coach before the Euro 2012 commences. Meanwhile, Portugal have climbed to fifth place in the FIFA rankings, leapfrogging Brazil in the process.

Speculation about Bento’s tenure at the helm of the national team beyond the tournament in Ukraine and Poland has rumbled on for several months. The former Sporting coach rejuvenated a faltering qualifying campaign after taking over from Carlos Queiroz in September 2010. The play-off win over Bosnia ensured Portugal would be present at their 7th successive major tournament.

However, the FPF seem to be reluctant to commit themselves to a long-term contract with Bento, perhaps fearing the possibility of having to replace the coach and pay compensation if the Seleccao fall on their faces in the summer.

“Paulo Bento will have his situation perfectly defined before the 2012 European Championships begin,” Gomes told Rádio Renascença yesterday, although when asked if that means a renewed contract will be on the table, Gomes refused to confirm.

FIFA rankings climb

Portugal have risen two places in the official FIFA rankings list, overtaking Brazil and England. The Seleccao are in fith position in the latest table.

Two of Portugal’s opponents in the group stage of Euro 2012 are above the national team. Germany are second and Holland are fourth. With Denmark also in the top ten, there is little doubt Group B will be the most competitive pool in the first phase of the competition.

Portugal play their final two friendlies ahead of the tournament on 26 May against Macedonia (played at Leiria) and against Turkey on 2 June (Estadio da Luz, Lisbon).

FIFA ranking:
1. Spain (previous position: 1st)
2. Germany (3rd)
3. Uruguay (4th)
4. Holland (2nd)
5. Portugal (7th)
6. Brazil (5th)
7. England (6th)
8. Croatia (10th)
9. Denmark (11th)
10. Argentina (8th)

We must focus on what we have not what would be ……

This team has played well since Carlos foi para cuna da Mae del. How’s that for a world class Portuguese hot head. Needless to say that the same reaction most would have had if the dopers showed up to interrupt dinner. Oh well fast forward to the premadona era of everyone wanting to coach the team including all the ship jumpers good riddance.

This team is young and will have lots of fun CR7 will have a great tournament and is in the best form of his life, let’s hope we win our first major tournament and bring home the silverware to the world wide fans that have been eagerly awaiting and supporting the team for decades. At times and I must say if we had a little more gold to throw around we may have had a few more calls go our way. But I have never felt that the teams did not play with all there hart.

Go Team Portugal GO Bento let have a great EURO and I hope Joao Francisco can write a new song for the Euro …..All to gether now. When Portugal play I will drink all day ………

VIVA Portugal!!!!

Blame Benfica

Benfica virtually supplies little to the National Team anyway.
Coach, should I stay or go....
23 Friday, 13 April 2012 01:03
WTF! This just buys ad space for you the media, to change now would mean a drastic drop in rankings and definitely no euro cup.
Bosingwa and Carvalho are the two examples to the rest of the team the egos are UNACCEPTABLE. Play or f¤%¿-off! Go home. This is a great move andthese guys are old carts. A striker is the only piece missing.
Bosingwa and Carvalho
22 Friday, 13 April 2012 00:01
First on Bosingwa, I agree with Jon in the US. Bosingwa is not in good form and Portugal has better options. Go back to the Euro 2008 game against Germany and Bosingwa got destroyed on of of the goals due to his inept defending.

Second, Carvalho is great and has been Portugal's best defender going back to Euro 2004. He is older and injury prone, it would be nice to get him back in form and back on the national team Not sure if the olive branch will be extended, besides Carvalho's time is limiited. Carrico looks like a nice option at CB or def midfielder. Plus there are a few options except for Rolando.

Third, I may not agree with Bento on player selections but he is a steady influence. At some point, the federation needs to make some commitment. I would trust him over AVB or Pacienca. It must be remembered that this current national despite CR is one of the weakest teams in the past 16 years given the lack of a striker, CB, and average midfield. Any coach will face these challenges and can't be fixed by coaching. We need better players and it will be up to new player development.
A double-edged sword

I agree with NJ that there is no real 'right' decision. Yes Bento did get our qualification back on track, and he did get us to Euro2012, and I believe that he deserves a chance to see it through.

At the same time, Bento has alienated one of the best Portuguese defenders of all time (Carvalho), and has failed to call up guys like Paulo Jorge, meaning our defense is now reliant on B. Alves, and God help us, Rolando. He fails to call up good players and relies on guys like Ruben Micael (who don't even start for their club team). He plays guys out of position. He's also won against the likes of Iceland, Norway and Cyprus, so let's not pretend we're world-beaters just yet. Yes, we beat Spain 4-0, but I doubt they were taking that game very seriously. Let's not forget we only needed a draw against Denmark, and we lost, and only got through to the tie against Bosnia because we had a better goal difference than Norway. My point being we scraped into Euro2012 by the skin of our teeth.

The FPF should offer him a short-term extension till after the Euros, and either offer him a new contract or fire him then. As for his possible replacement, I agree with Mdot that AVB and Paciencia aren't good options. I'd rather bring back Scolari than those 2. I know Scolari doesn't get a lot of love, and leaves things really late, but you can't argue with a World Cup semi, a Euro final and a Euro quarter-final. Though what I'm really waiting for is Mourinho to manage the Seleccao.
Vieirinha
20 Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:01
I know this is off topic but i want to know what you guys think of Vieirinha as a mid/wing. He would be a great option for either position, he was doing great at PAOK and he is a starter at Wolfsburg. Portugal need some strength on are bench.
Bosingwa
19 Thursday, 12 April 2012 16:12
Many posters on this site are also very upset about the Bosingwa incident, but in my opinion, Bosingwa isn't good enough for the Seleccao. If you've been watching Chelsea this season, you'll notice that Bosingwa has been awful. He always helps out offensively, but his final ball is usually terrible. He's wasteful in possession, and don't even get me started about his defending.

Joao Pereira has been great since Bento arrived. He is a tireless worker and he is good both offensively and defensively. He is also having a great season for Sporting.

Also, Miguel Lopes, who has looked brilliant for Braga recently, may just be better than Joao Pereira. Paulo Bento was at the Porto-Braga game last week and he was definitely impressed with Lopes' excellent performance.

I'm not sure how long Silvio will be out, but when fit, he is a very solid fullback. Nelson, in my opinion, is also a better overall right back than Bosingwa.
Ricardo Carvalho
18 Thursday, 12 April 2012 15:06
I agree that Ricardo Carvalho's experience would be a great asset to the seleccao this summer, but he has had almost no playing time this season for Real Madrid. When he has played, he has looked very poor as well. I would rather have a fit Bruno Alves start than a rapidly declining Carvalho. However, it would be useful to have a player of his experience on the bench.

Since Carvalho will not be taking part in the Euro's, I would hope that Bento is considering some alternatives to Rolando. Paulo Jorge of Apeol has been brilliant this season. Some other possibilities are Daniel Carrico, Nuno Andre Coelho, and Miguel Vitor. Daniel Carrico, however, should be used as a defensive midfielder, a position where he has looked brilliant recently.
Fire Bento!!
17 Thursday, 12 April 2012 14:37
I think its safe to say there are problems within the National team. With two key players (Carvalho and Bosingwa) both removing themselves from national team duties, because of their relationship with Bento, tells me there needs to be a change. It's funny how people will say "oh, well portugals objective was to make the euros and they did.. Bento did his job" What????? We barely made it. Portugal has a fantastic team with fantasitc players..world class..and for them to squeeze into the euros tells me something has to be done.
@Ramsey
16 Thursday, 12 April 2012 13:04
I used to think the same thing but Carvalho's last game he played was terrible. He made some horrible mistakes and he was just too slow. Is he better than Alves, yes I believe so. Do we have any other CB options?
Sack bento?
15 Thursday, 12 April 2012 09:29
Who will replace him if he got sacked?Bento is not good enough for seleccao,,he's just better than queiroz..get the best out of ronaldo is his best impact but dumping carvalho is his biggest mistake..except pepe, our CB is our weakest link besides striker right now..and he dumped carvalho??what a joke..
stupid
14 Wednesday, 11 April 2012 17:47
please i am begging the fpf not to sack paulo bento now,2 months before the euros? what a mistake ! paulo has installed motivation, heart and most important EXPERINCE,he knows what the players will be going through,he knows how to handle them so therefore this will be the biggest mistake, portugal football federation would be making the worst mistake
Bento
13 Wednesday, 11 April 2012 17:37
Thought the "fall on their faces in the summer" was a nice touch lol. The article talks about his tenure after the tournament not before, he won't be fired before the tournament baring a crazy situation.

Anyone else intrigued by a non-portuguese manager?
Extra note
12 Wednesday, 11 April 2012 17:15
I don't get the AVB and Paciencia as options. They have next to no experience, have proven they can't handle egos/bigger name players, and I would fully expect our national team to be a joke if either of them stepped up.

Hell I criticized Bento for his lack of experience when he was first hired and he easily surpasses these children. National team coaches are for seasoned managers with long term experience at various successful clubs and/or other national teams.

Honestly, how the hell can anyone say AVB can handle the biggest egos from Portugal when he couldn’t handle egos from some old farts at Chelsea.
Goooodbye Bento, Hello AVB
11 Wednesday, 11 April 2012 17:00
I believe FPF Pres. Mr. Gomes (Porto) will go for AVB (Porto). Why?
1. atleaste two Players dont want to play for Portugal because Bento is coach.
2.AVB is a great young coach, and will do alot better then Bento.
3. Porto will probably be champs this season and that mean vito perreira will remain at the helms.
4. Porto president and fernando gomes run things in portuguese football, and they will post AVB as new coach.

BET365 LOL!
Portugal

I think it's somewhat foolish for the FPF to not be publicly backing Bento. Even if they have some reservations about him and are being tempted by the fact that AVB, Paciencia, etc. may be on the market, the team seems to be a in a relatively stable state at the moment. While I was very unhappy about how he handled the Carvalho and Bosingwa incidents, the last thing the team needs now is yet another shakeup before the Euro.

While I think AVB might do better with the Portuguese squad than he did with the cry-babies over at Chelsea, I'm not sure he would be an improvement over Bento who has, on balance, done a decent job with the team. He accomplished what he set out to do, which was get the team to Europe and so he should be given the chance to coach during the tournament. Ronaldo has also been playing much better for the seleccao under his stewardship, which is a good sign.

As for the ranking, the fact of the matter is that Portugal crawled into the Euros and I don't think that their current form is worthy of a top 5 or maybe even top 10 ranking. I also wonder if this is the first time in a major international tournament that four teams in the global top 10 are in the same division in the group stages...
Bento's future
9 Wednesday, 11 April 2012 16:07
Let's be honest here. I'm a very optimistic person when it comes to Portugal's chances at the Euro but Germany and The Netherlands are favorites in the group. When I think of our first match against Germany, I'm looking for the tie. They will easily run us over if Bento doesnt play the right formation. Germany is a quick, skillful, tall and physical team and from what I've seen Bento isn't doing his best job with utilizing players in their correct positions or making the right substitutions. Bento was never a winning coach and we are beginning to see his luck run out according to our most recent friendlies.
incompetence
8 Wednesday, 11 April 2012 15:47
I agree Mdot.
If I was Bento I would consider moving on for a more lucrative club job. He's still young and should be eyeing those jobs anyway.
The FPF have no choice but to extend the deal and pay the man.
Stupid FPF
7 Wednesday, 11 April 2012 14:58
People continue to be overly harsh on a manager who has turned this team around. Also Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, and Denmark, can all finish anywhere between 1-4th place. This is the group of death and all I want to see is Portugal leave nothing to be questioned. Play their hearts out and hopefully we’re first in this group, either way, even the best manager could end up in 4th with this group.

As for Bento’s contract, I think its stupid debating it now and they should have waited till after the tournament. By deciding on it now, they have no choice but to extend it. If they don’t extend it, it’s almost as if they are saying Bento shouldn’t be leading the team into the Euro’s. Doing this before the tournament could under mind the team. Typical FPF stupidity in bringing this up now.
Bento's Future
6 Wednesday, 11 April 2012 14:29
If Bento fails to get us out of the group then he should be replaced by Villas Boas or an experienced foreign coach. So far, I think that he has done a decent job. I know his player selections have been a little strange at times, but he is getting the best out of Ronaldo, something Queiroz couldn't do.
manager
5 Wednesday, 11 April 2012 14:13
Hey, if Bentos sacked, a good replacement would be Costa who was just sacked from Cluj. He was sacked but they were in first place! XD he could be a good one, OR Andre.Villas.Boas! AVB please. Ahha
WTH??!
4 Wednesday, 11 April 2012 13:35
I would love to see who the FPF get to replace Bento at this moment, are you kidding me?!!. This guy has turned around this team since the horrific days of Carlos Q.It would be a terribel decision to oust Bento right at this moment. the guy has turned around this team with his motivation, tactics, and overall personality, someone that is in their and takes no bull from his players. The majority of the players played for him and against so they know what type of coach is he and what he expects!. If it isnt broke dont fix it!!. If they end up axing Bento, theyll probaly go after villas Boas or Paciencia, which would be a awful mistake!. Bento has the knowledge, defiantely the expierence and heart into this team, lets not mess it up right now..

.BTW I hope he calls up Nelson oliveria from Benfica, we defniately continue to need help at the striker position, im still not bought on Postiga or Almedia. Nelson gives them size and youth, something we also lack. And I think also Hugo viana should get a call up or look in a few of the friendlys...

FPF please dont screw this up, keep Bento, have faith in him..and everyone else too. We're in this together, Forca Portugal!!
What ever the FPF decides, it will be wrong.
3 Wednesday, 11 April 2012 12:22
We all rankings are a joke. England being 7th after dropping from 6th is laughable. How they can be in the top 10 we'll never know.
By the way, I also feel Portugal is a bit high.

I have never a Bento fan, but he got the necessary results. Will he continue to do so? Not so sure.
His player selection alone and even his substitutions have been questionable.

I know the media will continue asking about his contract, but why feed into it. The FPF is more concerned about losing money on a contract than the good of the team.
With Queiroz they found every little loophole not to have to pay him. Ridiculous.
Unfortunately we have ill equipped people making decisions.
Thanks @Ruirooster
