Portugal denied in Copenhagen

Denmark 1-1 Portugal

PortugalDanish Football CrestPortugal drew 1-1 with Denmark in Copenhagen tonight to leave their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread. The Seleccao dominated the match from start to finish, racking up more than 30 shots over the 90 minutes.

However, Bendtner's fine strike in the 41st minute gave the hosts the lead. Portugal's intense pressure was rewarded by substitute Liedson's late equaliser, but to make it to the play-offs Portugal are now relying on Sweden to drop points.

Denmark 1-1 Portugal

Things are looking grim for Portugal. As has so often happened this campaign the final whistle goes and one is left asking: "How did Portugal not win that game?" It's impossible to criticize the players' attitude after this match. Wave after wave of attack deserved better. But what matters is putting the ball in the back of the net, and over thirty shots yielded a solitary goal for Portugal.

94' The final whistle goes.

92' Liedson traps the ball in the box, spins and brings out a fine diving save from Andersen. Sweden win in Hungary.

90' Four minutes of stoppage time. Bruno Alves is playing as a forward.

89' Portugal continue to pour forward. The indefatigable Bosingwa plays in another dangerous cross, which is snuffed out with difficulty. Liedson then turns well but is crowded out.

85' GOAL! GOAL!!!!!!!!!! Liedson heads in a corner in instoppable fashion.

82' It's all out attack now. Nuno Gomes is on for Meireles. Another series of shots rain in on goal, with Nani's effort deflected wide.

79' Dangerous free-kick for Portugal on the edge of the box. Deco somehow persuades Ronaldo to let him take it and fires the ball over the bar.

76' Make that 25. Ronaldo powers towards goal, the ball breaks to Deco, and in a perfect position to score the midfielder lifts his effort high over the bar.

75' A telling statistic is that Portugal, in 75 minutes, have had 24 efforts on goal. Twenty-four attempts and not a goal to show for it.

74' Ronaldo wins a free kick 30 metres out in the centre of the field. No prizes for guessing who takes it. Ronaldo's effort goes over.

70' Liedson fires an effort wide. Simao is taken off and Nani comes on.

67' Nani warms up. Portugal have a little over 20 minutes to score two goals.

62' Incredible let-off for Denmark! Meireles fires in a cross-shot, keeper spills it and both Liedson and Ronaldo fail to knock it into the net from 2 metres out. Credit to the Denmark defender and keeper, but that has to go down as a bad miss.

60' Ronaldo drives his effort into the wall with his right foot, and his follow-up effort with his left foot is easily gathered by Andersen.

59' Yellow CardRonaldo turns sharply and is taken out by Kjaer, who is shown a yellow card. Free kick in a dangerous position...

57' Denmark almost double their lead. Bendtner chests down for Rommedahl who fires a dangerous shot inches wide.

52' Dangerous free kick won by Pepe. Duda's effort is deflected wide by a defender but the referee infuriates Portugal's players by giving a goal kick.

49' Denmark close to doubling their lead. Bendtner crosses and Bosingwa makes a decisive interception at the second post.

48'  Liedson's Yellow Cardfirst contribution is to pick up a yellow card for a poor challenge from behind.

46' Liedson comes on for his debut. Is the script set up for the Sporting striker?

We've been here before haven't we? Portugal dominate, create chance after chance, only to be thwarted by the opposition goalkeeper, poor finishing, the referee. The opposition have two chances and score one goal. Forty-five minutes to save Portugal's World Cup campaign.

45' Half-time whistle goes.

44' Portugal miss a wonderful chance to equalise immediately. Duda plays in a perfect low cross to Simao's feet, who crashes a shot over the bar when he surely should have hit the target.

42' GOAL! GOAL!!!!!!!!!! After being under intense pressure for 15 minutes Denmark score. Bendtner controls the ball wonderfully in the box and fires an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

40' Huge penalty appeal as a Ronaldo cross appears to be cut out by an arm. Immediately Simao fires a shot just over the bar.

39' Denmark at last breathe a sigh of relief as they get the ball in the Portugal half - briefly.

35' Corner for Portugal. Bruno Alves fails by a whisker to get on the end of it. Intense pressure from Portugal.

34' Spectacular save by Andersen! Duda fires in a fierce angled shot that the keeper tips over the bar with a flying stop.

32' Great move by Portugal. Tiago and Ronaldo combine beautifully to set up a shooting chance for Deco. The Chelsea midfielder hits his effort well but goalkeeper Andersen gets down well to save.

29' Portugal play a series of short passes on the edge of the Denmark box. The ball is played into Ronaldo's feet who tries his luck again, but the ball clears the bar.

26' Ronaldo bursts through one-on-one against Andersen and... is flagged for offside. Replays suggest the decision was right by all of 1 or 2 centimetres...

24' Both Portugal's full-backs Duda and Bosingwa are providing good support to the attack.

22' Great chance goes begging for Portugal! Duda swings in a cross, Simao controls perfectly and finds himself with space 10 metres out but hits his shot too close to Andersen who makes a diving save.

20' A long passing move ends with Bosignwa being brought unceremoniously down the earth. The referee waves away then gives a decision Portugal's way for what didn't look like a foul on Ronaldo. Ronaldo fires towards goal but the keeper saves easily.

15' Denmark almost take the lead. A low cross from Bendtner takes a couple of ricochets and lands at the feet of Jorgensen. From point-blank range, thankfully the striker snatches at the chance and the ball is skied high over the bar.

14' Credit to Denmark who are not sitting back in defence, which is making for an open game so far.

11' Portugal come close to opening the scoring! Deco plays in Ronaldo on the right flank who advances towards goal and hits a firm low shot that Andersen saves with his legs.

9' Driving rain in the Danish capital. The Danes are not sitting back and Pepe makes a good interception to snuff out danger in the Portugal box.

7' Good period of possession by Portugal deep in the Denmark half. Suddenly Ronaldo bursts into life. Duda plays in the Real Madrid winger who skips past his marker at high speed and fires an angled shot narrowly over the bar.

5' Cagey start by both teams. Meanwhile news filters through that in the other group game being played simultaneously in Group One Sweden take an early lead in Hungary.

2' First half-chance for Portugal. Simao sends a teasing low cross into the box and Meireles almost gets on the end of it.

1' Denmark are first on the attack. Good run by Rommedahl leads to an early cross into the box, Tomasson handles and the danger is over.

0' - The talking is over. The teams walk out to a packed Parken Stadium in Copenhagen. The big news from Portugal's point of view is that Liedson will not be starting the match, as Carlos Queiroz opts for a classic 4-4-2 formation, without any recognised out-and-out striker. Simao and Ronaldo are the front men. May the action begin.

I know everyone here is pretty pissed off with the current situation..but seriously people here and in portugal need to get off CR7's back!
carlos is totally to blame in this situation. his fking tactics are useless. Im thinking that the players arent saying anything becuase no one wants to be outed or left out if we do make it.

I really hope we do make it, but if we do come second, we're in a difficult playoff situation. At present the team selections and tactics are rubbish.
we have NOT won a home game and we would need to step up considerably.

Fresh/Hamilton,
Yeah I know about Denmark beating Sweden in Sweden... but you're wrong about one thing: Sweden have 12 points right now and if they win all three of their remaining matches, they will finish with 21 points, 2 ahead of Portugal. This is why Portugal need the Danes to either tie or beat Sweden to have a chance. It will be much easier if the Danes just beat Sweden (which is entirely possible) because then all Portugal have to do is win their last 3 games and goal differential won't come into play.

Nathan/USA just to let you know Sweden doesn't host Denmark. Denmark has to host Sweden, because I remember Denmark beating Sweden 1-0 away from home. All we need is Portugal to win there remaining games we will finish with 19 points and we just need Denmark to beat Sweden and Sweden can win against Malta and Albania and they will only finish with 18 points. So if Denmark can beat Sweden in Sweden then I think Denmark can do it again.
Agreed

I agree with the poster below that everyone needs to stop saying we need to get rid of this player and that player.....ESPECIALLY Ronaldo. Portugal need him badly and he did not play poorly against Denmark....seriously, they created soooo many chances and were just very, very unlucky. No one individual is to blame for the draw against Denmark. Bosingwa was awesome and Deco played really well too. Meireles wasn't as much of a factor but he didn't play badly. Yes Duda is small and Bosingwa is much better than him but I really think all of the right players to get the job done are on the field. However, I really do think that Portugal need a striker. I do agree that Ronaldo is best when he plays as a winger. That is HIS position and he excels at it. So, to everyone who said that Simao and Ronaldo should not be strikers, I agree. They should support Liedson or Nuno Gomes up top.
Have faith everyone, if Portugal turn out this kind of performance against Hungary, they will score multiple goals.

I agree that our team has some problems, but we have some important players that many of you don't think we need. For a team to be successful you need players that have slightly different qualities especially in midfield. That is why the idea to drop Meireles sounds stupid to me. Meireles runs more than anyone else on the pitch in almost every game he plays. He is great as long passing and crossing. A player like Meireles helps the team keep possetion of the ball similar to de rossi or essien. We don't have any other players with those qualities.
Duda is a great winger who possess some amazing crosses, but he is a small winger who can not play as a defender. I also agree with the lack of a consistent winger other than ronaldo. We have so many fantastic wingers, much more than any other country in the world. However when it comes to the seleccao Simao and Nani are either excellent or terrible. In my opinion Simao is much better with desicion making and has a better technique, but Nani is faster and has a better shot.
I think Liedson and ronaldo are the keys to beating hungary along with their important unsung hero Bosingwa.

Now, I have the feeling that we wouldn’t make it to South Africa. Coming up against Hungary, they are also a tough obstacle to beat. Even with a win, it depends on the outcome of Sweden and Denmark. Let’s face it, we even had a very tough time facing Albania. Every game, we got motivated than the last time, but to no positive results. After every game, Carlos Queiroz is changing the game plan with no breakthrough whatsoever. His last formation against Denmark was lame. The chances for us to reach South Africa is slim, very very slim at best.

if portugal wins their last 3 games and sweden beats malta and albania but ties against denmark. They both would have 19 points. If portugal have a better goal difference than Sweden wont they get 2nd place in the group. why does everyone keep saying that denmark have to beat sweden, a tie would be sufficient. The only thing is that portugal would have to run up the scores at home against hungary and malta while Sweden would have the easier task of running up the scores at Malta and at home against Albania, even though i dont think they will beat albania 4 or 5 nothing. Can anyone clarify that for me .
wont we make it?

Look, the only team between Portugal and South Africa is Sweden. Portugal WILL beat Hungary twice and then beat Malta. All we need is Sweden to screw up. Denmark has also beaten Sweden in Sweden so there certainly is a chance that they could lose or draw. Don't worry about being in the top 8 of 2nd placed teams because Scotland will be the one that doesn't make it. Even if they do beat the Dutch they will have an awful goal differential, so the only team in the way is Sweden. If they win out, Portugal are out and that's final. However, if they draw, we can still beat them if we score a ton of goals. I know that's been a problem as of late but come on guys, the goals HAVE to come eventually. 34 shots with 13 on goal against Denmark IN COPENHAGEN. It will be tough, but it was never going to be easy....and just think, if the Danes beat Sweden, then all Portugal need to do is win their next 3 games, regardless of goal differential. There is still hope, as bad as this campaign has been, there is still hope yet....

Queiroz must be gone after Hungary

I'm getting sick and tired of seeing this guy at the sidelines. I want to see a guy who has actually had some experience as a manager, well Queiroz has but always fails wherever he goes. Whoever said bring back Scolari I would have to say that would be a dumb decision. Why? Ok, he had his chance in 2004 but blew it and in the 2006 World he was so predictable so if Portugal had a better manager for 04 and 06 then I would guess that Portugal could of possibly won two major trophies. Mourinho would be the answer but he's so stubborn not to leave Inter because he wants to win every domestic trophy in every top league (England is finished, Italy and soon enough Spain).
Lack of Balance and Look to Future

There is still hope to qualify for WC 2010 and highly unlikely. I'm given up being upset and disappointed as I have accepted whatever the outcome. This qualification was lost in the first game against against Denmark at home and Albania game at home -- we lost 5 points!

This team has been sliding since WC 2006 and the 4-5 key positions needed to turn this team around have not been corrected. We still lack a striker, an effective winger besides CR, midfield not settled, left back a disaster, and GK --could be worse but could be better.

First yesterday's game, I not a professional soccer coach but I could see a lack of balance in this team. As has been commented, 3 defensive midsfielders. I have no problem with Pepe at def midfield because he is physical, athletic and can cover space and you have Alves/Carvalho behind him. Get your best 3 defensive players on the field.

The issue is Meireles who is a average defensive player and average offensive player which = 0 (nothing). This guy has no room on the national team. How can you have this guy behind a front line that is already challenged. As bad as Simao is, he is better playing behind the forwards where he can pass the ball and shoot from distance. Tiago has been in form recently and was a good choice.

Simao starting in the front was a huge mistake, he has never scored a goal in any qualifying game against a decent team. He is not explosive, creative, and strong enough to play out front. He is better suited to play behind the forwards. Liedson or even Nani would have been a better choice.

The Duda experiment caught up to us, he is like Ferriera on the left back position, touch him and he goes down. Miguel would have been a better choice. I could care if a guy is a bit out of position, play your best and most physical players.

I'm not convinced we are headed back to the ages where we couldn't qualify for tournaments but we are depend on our younger players developing like Nani, Fernandez, Veloso, Carrico, etc. We must turn over this team from players like Meireles, Simao, Duda, these players are a sign of a team that is lacking and it is time for the young players to replace these hapless players who will never give us the results we need. How long can we go back to these dry wells?

Time to move on, no way Portugal will qualify for WC2010.
Fire the idiot coach for not starting a striker in the 1st half in a must win match. Drop selfish Ronaldo, he will never be a FIGO or Eusebio !!..
In the youth academys, train them scoring skills, rather than diving skills...
This could be a long drought.... Portugal went 10 years after

I believe that because Hungary is in the race for second place, they will not sit back and defend like almost every other team does against portugal. Now the hungarians are not as good as the danes who beat them 3-0 so I think there will be some space for our midfielders/strikers to create chances and score at least 2 goals. We can keep a clean sheet as long as we are pacient and wary of counter attacks. And lets hope that the hungarian keeper doesn't have the game of his life like all of the other keepers do against portugal.

With a win in hungary and a win in lisbon in october, we should get the play off spot. It's not impossible, if we qualify, which we will, it will be a spectacular comeback in our international history, surely this will give us some momentum for South Africa.
Portugal wont make it!

It has gone wrong from the start, lack of wins and consistency is missing. Too late to bring in any confidence at this later stage of the group stage. Confidence is low now.
If you dont get off to a good start to the campaign then you will slip up. Poor results at home, poor defending away.
Dont get me wrong we play beautiful football but we need an out and out striker period.

Now since the two games against Malta will be dropped along with every other teams results in their groups against the weaker side Portugal can only obtain a maximum of 13 points in 8 games if they win all 3. Now 2nd place scotland has 10 in 7 and their last game is against the dutch and they have -4 Goal diff. So 13 points might be enough to earn them the last playoff not to mention Northern Ireland are currently in 2nd with 14 and still have to play 2 games against 1st place slovakia, and the czechs who are in the same boat as portugal being in 4th. Now if the Irish tie 1 of those games they only come out with max points of 12 being as their 2 games against weaker opposition will be dropped. Now we either need sweden to lose in denmark in octobe(best and easiest situation) or tie their final 2 against denmark and albania. If somehow our men can actually finish this wedsday and get the win then it will all be decided on oct 10. The only good thing if and only if we win this wedsday(for love of God no more ties or loss) is by the time oct 10 comes around denmark still wouldn't have won the group so they will be trying to beat sweden with their first rate squad. Even if their is only that 1 percent chance to qualify for play off that is still one more than zero. I mean who would of thought the Us would of made it out of their group in the confed cup with needing the brasil result and to win by the result they won by. Hell crazier things have happened. FORCA SEMPRE PORTUGAL and until the ship is totally sunk then and only then will I forget wc 2010

I guess technically its not over, but for Portugal to qualify Quieroz has to go, I can't believe he played 3 defensive midfielders in a diamond formation, you have to be a real idiot to do that. Why not nani and ronaldo on the wings with simao and liedson up front? that would have worked. Duda whose fault the goal was, as a defensive player you don't go down in the box like a sally cuz like he did cuz he got knicked, he should be on the bench, with Miguel in his position, He proved in the last friendly he can play left back, its stupidity on Quieroz. You can say we couldn't finish and that's fine cuz we really should have, but that was also the case with Albania, Sweden twice, how many times can you blame the finishing, its not being mentally prepared to do what you need to, and that's the coach s job. And to I told you so.. we couldn't call up Liedson until this game because of his passport and you have to be in a country for a certain amount of time, which just now he came available to us. Ronaldo I thought played a good game as well. Good players take games over themselves and he almost did score quite a few times, didn't Figo do this quite often? Bottom line is quieroz sucks, and duda and meireles should be keeping the bench warm, they shouldn't see a second on the field

Unfortunatley, Portugal will not make it - too many variables in order to even make the paly offs. We can not just wait for other results. I personally don't see Sweden dropping points and Denmark can afford to drop one game. The Hungary game away will not be easy. The coach has to go - he has done nothing and not playing a striker is an issue. Ronaldo should be out on the flank where he is more dangerous. I am sad for Portugal that we will not make it - now i turn my Attention to Australia........something to at least barrack for.

For those so called Portuguese fans who did nothing but complain about Liedson and how he shouldn't play because of his nationality...NOW WHAT DO YOU SAY???!!

I've been saying it for years that this kid should be called up as soon as he receives his Portugal passport. He is a consistent striker and ALMOST had two goals today. Ronaldo did nothing and others tried hard but it was our newest member Liedson who did something in a matter of minutes.

Now I don't think mathematically we can qualify but we should have called up Liedson months ago.

Ok I was not to upset with the way we played aside from the fact our finishing was terrible. First things first, we could and should of had 2 penalties especially the handball! We made so many chances and couldn't score I was especially upset with Simao and yes, Liedson. Liedson did score, but he had 2 amazing oppertunities to score and Simao had an easier one. To be honest Duda did play very well in attack, but be it a foul or not, Bendtner easily pushed the small duda aside and smashed a goal passed eduardo ( Beto should start in goal).
Ronaldo played very well and simao and deco were dangerous with their dribbling and passing, but coudn't score.
If we win the next 3 games we should qualify, but we could still have to play against teams like france. We all need to hope and pray that the seleccao can play to their potential.

Can anyone answer these questions, i just dont get it:
1. why did queiroz start 4 pleyrs out od posiittion? (Deco, Ronaldo, Pepe, Duda)
2. why did queiroz play the 1st half with no forwards? or centre forward>?
3. why did he start Tiago(at CM the most important position)? who barely plays for Juve.
4. nani, veloso, moutinho have all been if very good form, why are they not playing?
5. we needed to win the game why did queiroz start the game with 3 defensive midfielders? (pepe, meireles, tiago)
6. where is Maniche? he might not play his best at club football, but he has always been a beast in the heart of the seleccao midfield.
7. how in the world does queiroz still have a job? hes never proved he can coach at the senior level, how did we ever hire tihs guy for the sleeccao?
8. why does queiroz give the cry baby ronaldo the C? i think Bruno Alves or Carvalho should be wearing it. he should look at the replays of him wining all the time, its embarassing.

Well, time to break it down.

Seems like THIS team were trying. Just doesn't seem they were trying to tackle the Danes.

Tiago, Meireles, Deco, Duda and Ronaldo should not start this next game.

Maniche, Nuno Gome,. Miguel, Liedson Nani should be given a chance.
Mehh, I mean, I want to "hope" and everything...but its pretty obvious we're not going anywhere.

Also, Ronaldo once again was SELFISH until around the 75th minute.

You have a lot of valid points, but Liedson is the answer right now. Maybe for next euro and next wc Almeida. How can you deny Liedsons performance, his first game for Portugal and he scores. He is such a lil jerk when it comes to getting the ball and striking... i bet you if Liedson played most of the match and had those Simao chances, it would of been 3-1 with him scoring all three goals.

Another dominating performance but just cant seem to find the back of the net. To dane from germany i would hardly call a whopping 4 shots on target, an obvious handball in the box not to a mention a non call foul on deco in the box an effiecient game for the danes. They were back peddling for the last 25 mins. Anyone who watched knows portugal owned them and desereved the 3 points. Nontheless congrats your team is still undefeated. Now we all know sweden have to lose against denmark oct 10 and portugal have to win all 3. Since we now only have about a 10 percent to 30 percent chance of getting the playoff spot there is still i guess an oppurtunity for this team to be touched by the hand of God. As for Queiroz Ive definitely questioned this guys selections at times and i knew he was going to go 4-4-2 with ronaldo playin up front onlyt because thats what worked in the friendly all be it against liechenstein with simao and almeida. At least Queroz recognizes the seleccao is in transistion period and tried some new faces and he knows our ongoing problems with striker. Thank goodness for liedson as he prevented the shutout and he looked better at the end as opposesd to when he first came in. Let Queiroz finish the campaign and if somehow miraculously tis team qualifies terrific, if not then make the decision on him as coach. And as for this team next year yes to all the younglings like yannick, coentrao, sa, veloso, moutinho and whoever else is on the rise

I have to say that Portugal is better than this and can't finish and it pisses me right off. Denmark gets one chance and it turns out that Bentner fouls Duda and scores. Portugal was very fast and the passing was very accurate in the first half which I like alot very exciting to watch but Portugal could of ended this game in the first half (ie. Ronaldo's first chance, and Duda sending Simao in the middle). I'm very surprised to see Queiroz as Portugal's manager because he is absolutely terrible manager. Queiroz isn't a head coach, he is only good to find talent and work with individuals. Why the hell would Queiroz play Simao and Ronaldo up front!? He has two strikers on the bench and doesn't use them (Liedson & Nuno Gomes). Either one would of done well especially Liedson. Queiroz deserved to be fired long ago.

I guess the danes are more efficient and without the goal from the imported player from Brazil they would have won the game.

It must be nice to know that you can import good players if you have none yourselves, Portugal has a great advantage there.

It was another toothless tiger performance by the squad. There is nothing cutting edge about the team.

* Ronaldo's first touches as usual were poor. He's out of place as a striker, sorry but we don't have a player like Rooney to make him look good and we need to face that reality. He's a natural winger and was much more effective out on the flanks.

* Duda was a joke all game, not once did he put in a challenge. He gave the Dane's too much time and respect on the ball. He was also afraid to take on defenders. There were several instances in the game were he could have pushed through the defense but instead cut the ball back.

* Simao is not a striker, why does Queiroz persist playing him upfront. The guy can't shoot plain and simple. Liedson was much more effective and would have made a bigger impact on the game if he had started. Simao should have replaced Miereless in midfield.

* What sane minded coach starts 5 midfielders and no strikers in a crucial qualifier. Let's face it Queiroz is absent something between the ears. Sure he's good with the players, coordinating training, and pouring their drinks but a coach he is not. No more excuses for him, his track record is appalling. We have arguably one of our most talented squads ever but have managed step backwards as a team and whats most sad about this is that the writing has been on the wall for at least the last couple of years. The administration has sat on it hands and done nothing.

Even if Sweden can somehow drop points and Portugal wins in Hungary, neither of which are givens, 2nd place may not be enough to qualify for the playoffs. The Malta results will be dropped to compare to the smaller groups and Portugal will have 13pts at best...that might be the lowest return of the 2nd place teams which would mean Portugal would lose out.

Perhaps now we can finally accept that the Querioz hiring was a mistake and move on. It's hard to fault the effort of the players today, but starting without a striker was a huge mistake. He could have put Gomes in there for all I care, but without a target man, there was no one to take advantage of the service from bosingwa and duda. And then taking out Tiago (who was playing well) instead of Simao or Meireles at the half made no sense at all. I'd like to see him fired immediately instead of waiting until the end of qualification.

This team needs to be broken down and built back up. Deco has to go as does Simao. These guys are not getting any younger and will not be able to help us in 2012.

When healthy, Almeida needs to be the choice as striker as there is no better option (Liedson is not the answer). Give Moutinho and Veloso spots in the lineup. Meireles has never recreated his FCP form in the seleccao so let's get him out of there. Let's let the young kids like Orlanda Sa and Djalo try and earn some time as well. Let's try and build a team that can realistically contend in 2012 and 2014 instead of trotting out the same guys from 06/08.

Everyone played outstanding today really, even though they drew which I completely don't understand. Bosingwa was awesome, he abused every single defender that marked him, no one could stop his runs. Every single player contributed positively I thought, even though the end product was not there. I have never seen a game like that in my life, when everyone plays so well (save for a few bad misses by Simao) and they still only draw.
What was with Simao?

He had unbelievable chances to score in this game....especially in the first half. I agree that Nani should start in his place against Hungary. Cristiano Ronaldo looked good in this game and really was more of a team player and took some good shots. That goalkeeper, like every other random goalkeeper that plays against Portugal, had the game of his freakin' career tonight.
Dont even know what to say .......

I'm really disappointed i mean we cant even blame the players on this one (except maybe Simao) I just really wish Nani would of started he's in excellent form .. but its over now all we can do is hang our heards were fourth in the group now and Sweden play Malta and Albania 2 out of there last three games it's pretty much over .. I had hope and i cant believe i just said that .. It was good to see Ronaldo play with his heart again hopefully another lesson learned for an underachieving national team .. Portugal have no luck my granfather , my father , and now me have never seen a trophy .. and it looks like that pain will last a little longer now

not impressive second half. they have major problem scoring and crossing. levezinho was not bad but need to be a stronger player and play like he plays in sporting. simao should have been subistute player and meireles too. i would have mouthinho and maniche in. THEY NEED TO BEAT HUNGARY AND WORRY ABOUT SWEDEN. VERY SLIM CHANCES TO QUALIFY. i am a bit pissed off.

Portugal dominated the game but as usual couldn't finish. They got a point and there is still hope if they can win the next game.

Carlos Q should have brought in Nani and Gomes in earlier especially Nani for Simao. I have said this for years as long as Simao is starting Portugoal is at a disavantage. He does nothing on the big stage and gets taken off the ball. Meireles is another guy who has no place on the starting team. He does nothing on the big stage and offers very little.

If we can make the minor adjustments for the next game (Simao out, Meireles out), we might be able to pull in off.
Portugal need help from Sweden now......

I can't believe it.....what a performance to only earn a draw.... 34 shots with 13 on goal....unbelievable. With Sweden winning today at the last second, Portugal will need Sweden to drop points against someone, most likely against Denmark. Oh, and Portugal will need to increase their goal differential because they are behind Sweden right now, 5 goals to 4.
go Portugal

The story of the qualification, dominate but can't score. The Duda experiment caught up to us. I liked the way we played but I think we need to bring on Nani for more width and ball control. Meireles is not cutting it, is he even playing in this game? Take him out and put in Nani. Simao is what he has always been (plays because no one else is consistent -- he is back up at best), scores a few goals against minnows but no goals against a decent opponent. Bring on Liedson and take out Simao. We still have hope to score 2 goals.

portugal are playing very hard. but not good enough. simao had two great chances of scoring first half, whats wrong with him. simao does not make a good targetsman, he should be a midfielder. postiga or levezinho should take simaos place and simao should take mierles place. miereles is playing like shit. unlucky portugal right now. they need to put levezinho in second half. lets hope they will change game and play has hard. im nervous right now and a bit pissed.
Don't give up!

They can still pull this off. 2 goals in the second half....I think Portugal had about 7 shots on goal (15 shots total) in this half so now they just need to finish one of those chances.
Yep, 2 goals....

I knew it from the beginning.....Portugal need 2 goals to win this game.... that was just lazy defending there....Portugal have had some great chances, they can still pull this one out.
