Simao fires Portugal to vital victory

Portugal 3-0 Hungary

HungaryPortugalPortugal took a massive step towards the World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Hungary at the Estadio da Luz tonight. Two goals from Simao and a third from Liedson sees Portugal leap-frog Sweden, who lost in Denmark, up into second place in the group.

A win against Malta in Guimaraes on Wednesday and the Seleccao can start preparing for the play-off matches.

Portugal 3-0 Hungary

91' Final whistle goes. A comfortable win for Portugal in the end and combined with the Sweden result it's a perfect night for Portugal who have second place practically guaranteed. A win at home against Malta on Wednesday will confirm a play-off place.

86' Portugal playing keep-ball to the sound of olés reverburating around the jubilant crowd.

83' The other goalscorer Liedson comes off and Nuno Gomes enters the fray. Liedson loves playing at the Estadio da Luz. Just ask Benfica fans...

80' Simao comes off to the mandatory and richly deserved standing ovation. Miguel Veloso comes on.

78' GOAL! GOAL!!!!!!!!!! Simao scores. Duda dinks over a cross to the far post where Simao smacks a volley into the corner of the net. What a memorable return to his former stamping ground for the Atletico Madrid winger. Two goals.

73' GOAL! GOAL!!!!!!!!!! Liedson scores. Portugal have taken a giant step towards South Africa! The ball breaks to Bruno Alves and the Porto centre-back calmly plays a perfect cross to the second post where the Levezinho thumps a header on target. Goalkeeper Babos makes a valiant effort to keep it out but the ball goes over the line and Portugal are two-up.

70' Portugal seem to be in control but while the advantage is just one goal nobody inside the Estadio da Luz can breathe easy.

64' Portugal twice close to a tension-busting goal!! First Nani then Simao force two brilliant saves out of Babos.

58' Nerves are starting to show. Portugal are enjoying most of the possession but are not creating anything in the way of chances.

51' Hungary will be out of the running for qualification if this results ends as it is and unsurprisingly the visitors are commiting more men forward, in so doing leaving space for Portugal to exploit on the break.

49' Nani breaks and shapes to shoot, only to play a disguised pass to Meireles but a promissing attack fizzles out.

46' Hungary straight on the attack at the restart. The ball circulates dangerously near the Portugal net but Eduardo snaffles the danger.

Half-time interval

45' Play switches to the other end of the pitch and Hungary come even closer. A cross is swung over, Eduardo comes out but doesn't make it and a Hungarian forward heads the ball onto the bar! Let-off for Portugal. This is far from over yet... Half-time whistle goes.

44' Portugal almost double their lead! Deco sends in a sumptuous cross and Ricardo Carvalho wins a header but the ball just goes just over the bar.

39' Hungary a whisker away from an equaliser! Balazs hits an excellent low shot that is deflected inches past the post.

36' Excellent break from Nani, who feeds Deco on the left. The Chelsea man switches the ball across the edge of the box for Meireles to try his luck. The FC Porto midfielder hits his effort first-time, but the ball flies over the bar.

32' A quiet period of play is largely restricted to midfield.

26' Setback for Portugal. Ronaldo feels a reccurence of his injury and is forced off. But 25 minutes on the pitch was enough to set up what could be the vital first goal. On comes Nani.

22' Next it's Bruno Alves who comes close, powering a header just over the bar.

20' Simao's on fire. Twice in quick succession, first on the left then on the right the former Benfica captain comes close to his and Portugal's second.

17' GOAL! GOAL!!!!!!!!!! Tecnical difficulties resolved just in time to report on the opening goal for Portugal!!! Ronaldo does well to get in a cross on the right, the keeper pushes it out and Simao is on hand to hammer the ball into the back of the net.

6' Danger for Portugal. Eduardo forced into a smart save.

5' Early pressure from Portugal further excites the crowd, but Hungary will not roll over easily.

1' It's the perfect start to the night for Portugal. News filters through that Denmark have beaten Sweden 1-0 in Copenhagen and a party atmosphere takes hold of the Estadio da Luz.

The match will kick off at almost the exact same time Sweden's game in Denmark comes to an end. Should Sweden fail to beat their Scandanavian neighbours, the Seleccao and the expected 65,000 crowd gathering here at the Estadio da Luz will be highly motivated for what could be a memorable evening - the night Portugal wrested back control of their World Cup destiny.

But... a win for Sweden in Copenhagen
hardly bears thinking of. Such a result will as good as end the hopes of Ronaldo and company making it to South Africa.

Great Victory

The team demonstrated determination which is often question by some of the posts. Some fans question if Portuguese players have the determination and heart. I tend to believe our players do have it and if we come up short it usually is because we're not good enough. There is a difference and sometimes even with all the passion you come up short.

Anyway, enjoy this victory and prepare for Malta. We expect to put Malta away and it may look a bit favorable in the qualifying round.

There is still plenty of debate and critical debate on the coach and players performance. That will be for another day but one comment, let't not get over excited about Simao. He is still a flawed player (can't take people off the dribble, get taken off the ball, lacks pace, for 1 good game there are 5 bad games, etc). The goals he scored are right up what he does best and if you put the ball at this feet where he has a precision like shot, he will score some goals. We need more than a guy if the conditions are right will occassionally make a goal.

I said earlier that Simao needed to lift his game because he was getting belted out on the wing, and boy did he, finally back to doing what i know he can, he was the best onfield by a mile and definantly the man of the match and in my opinion should be our captain for a few more years.

However the boys did not play well, their passes were very off target, but i guess that shows how good our team is due to the fact that we won 3-0 without playing with any real shine.

Liedson was too quiet, Duda and meireles were shocking and need to be dropped asap, Nani did some good and bad things, but im confident he will come good when needed.

Ukraine

Ukraine beating England today really helped Portugal because as long as Ukraine beats Andorra on Wednesday then Croatia will be out of the playoffs and we will be one of the top four teams in the seeding and will not have to play against France, Greece, or Russia...

FORCA Portugal!

CHOOSE RIGHT PLAYERS
22 Saturday, 10 October 2009 23:27
I beleive we do have a very good team if we choose these players WITH IN GOALKEEPERS THEIR R 3 that are above the rest with hilario, daniel fernandes, ricardo batist to give experience.
DEFENCE BOSINGWA MIGUEL NELSON AND JOSE GONCALVES OR VELOSO FOR RIGHT AND LEFT BACKS
Center backs are good with PEPECARVALHO>ROLANDO or MEIRA

CENTER MIDFIELDS I THINK ARE REALY GOOD WITH THE LIKES OF DECO,FERNANDES,TIAGO,MOUTINHO, and really good young midfileders playing abroad LIKE VITOR PELE AND PAULO MACHADO FROM SPAIN AND FRANCE PRIMERA LIGA and we should try eliseu and yannick on the wings or as forwards 1 game a friendly BECAUSE THEY R THE FASTEST PLAYERS I SEEN UP THEIR WITH RONALDO AND NANI MAYBI FASTER and with quaresma nani ronaldo on wings with yannick or eliseu on top or other wing and liedson vazte te makukla almeida yannick or eliseu as 3 or 4 of the chosen strikers would be a very difficult squad to stop any other suggestions just need to build chemistry

It was a great result for the seleccao. Simao played really well against a formidable oppenent. Ronaldo did enough to set up the early goal, even though im sure the ronaldo haters will say that his exit shows that he has no desire for seleccao (even though he played half fit as it was) blah blah blah, but without him simao doesnt pounce on that fumble by the keeper. I thought Pedro Mendes was terrific with his play, and although it was shaky for a little while there the squad was able to get good runs and passed the ball the way we know they can in the 2nd half. Portugal are now in the drivers seat for 2nd place playoff. Lets keep up the momentum boys

FORCA SEMPRE PORTUGAL
I knew they could do it...

Congratulations to Portugal! Ronaldo set up the first goal so eat your heart out all you haters......I hope he can make it back soon. Great game for Simao, I have to admit that I doubted he was going to play like that but great game for him.

I do not have the game on cable, does anyone know where we can watch the game on the internet for free?
What time is the game on?
13 Saturday, 10 October 2009 17:07
I live in Canada and I ordered the RTPi channel and SIC International. On my program guide, it says this game is on at 4:30-6:00. That's impossible unless there is no half time so what i am wondering is, is the guide wrong or are they not playing it live and are just gonna show the whole game with no commercials or halftime. Because 8:45 Lisbon time is 3:45 in Toronto, Canada, since Lisbon is 5 hours ahead.

Uhh nathan if your gonna speak matter of factly than get it right paolo sousa was the general not rui costa...check the history he won more in less time with less talent(winnint champ league with borussia dortnund as their best player)veloso has the potential but from I've seen he lacks the commitment and work ethic.

We have a great team
8 Saturday, 10 October 2009 00:47
I actually do beliee we have a really good team, not as good as the last couple of years but still we were that good then that i still believe our team is rather good now. I have alot of belief in Nani, i think if he turned up with the attitude that we will blow the game open, i think he will, i also believe that at club level he has the ability to be one of the best players at Man.U.

Simao worries me though, he is a great player but he seems to have slowed down.

I do beliee we still have one of the best midfields in the world, Deco will play good for us, his form is never bad when he is playing for his country. We just need to hope that Liedson turns up ready to score goals because im sick of our midfielders needing to make up for our strikers in the scoring department.
Great Portugal team??
7 Friday, 09 October 2009 20:06
Yeah, I don't know Justin......I think I'm going to have to agree with Tony....now, Portugal DOES have a lot of raw talent but there is no one to properly train them and help them harness that talent. That's where Cristiano Ronaldo is the exception: he had Ferguson to invest special interest in him to help him harness his raw talent. Now he is the world's best. Players like Nani and Quaresma and pretty much every Portuguese striker on the market haven't been brought up accordingly and so the talent pool isn't what it could POTENTIALLY be. There is also the lack of a "midfield general" so to speak. This used to be Deco but now he is fading so Portugal need someone to control the midfield, like Rui Costa. Without that, there is no link between defense and attack. Portugal do have world class defenders though, and Cristiano Ronaldo.....aside from that, there is no one else I would dare call world class. Although, there are a few who I hope can get to that point over time (Nani, Moutinho, Almeida, Miguel Danny, Veloso). These players are in great need of better coaching and more discipline if they want to succeed on the world stage.

Not a Great Portugal Team
3 Friday, 09 October 2009 17:24
We still have a shot to qualify but very likely it will be thru the 2nd place qualifiers. Like a good fan, I'll be rooting and hoping for the best!

Like to hear that CR and Boswinga are a go for the match. I was getting sick of the thought of Paulo Ferreira playing RB and CR (despite the critics) is one of the very few players who can finish on this team. Imagine sending out a team without CR, where would the scoring come from? Our centerbacks are our 2nd best scoring option. Leidson is a needed boost.

I don't agree that his is one of the best teams not to qualify for the WC if this team doesn't qualify. Portugal had better teams in 94 and 98. I believe with the exception of 3-4 defenders and CR up front, this is one of the worse talented Portuguese teams in the past 20 years. At least teams in the past had decent (not great) strikers and midfield players like Figo and R. Costa. This team has no cutting edge and not very explosive. The proof is in the lack of goals (data to support) and cohesive play. This team doesn't play very crisp Portuguese soccer.

With all that, I will still root for this team and hope the get in because the WC won't be the same without Portugal. Let's hope our players improve!

If this portugal team does not qualify for the world cup it will go down as one of the best teams in the world of all time to not qualify
