Cristiano Ronaldo set to miss World Cup play-offs

Forward may need an operation

Cristiano Ronaldo is almost certain to be missing for Portugal’s crucial World Cup qualification play-offs with Bosnia, after being told he may require surgery on his ankle.

A medical examination carried out by the Real Madrid medical staff on the player’s ankle has led to the conclusion that there has been little improvement during his recovery period since suffering the injury last month. According to Marca, Ronaldo is, at the very least, still a month away from achieving full fitness.

Ronaldo has now travelled to Amsterdam to visit Dr Van Dijk, who operated on the 24-year-old in 2008, for a second opinion. According to reports, possible solutions could range from treatment, which would see Ronaldo out for just one month, to surgery, ruling the Fifa World Player of the Year out for two or three months.

Whatever the specific outcome, it seems almost certain that Carlos Queiroz will be without his star man for the Bosnia matches on the 14th and 18th of November.

Don't worry, even without Ronaldo, Portugal is still more than capable of beating Bosnia. We need to play the way we know we can. Without any doubt the best starting 11 Queiroz can use against the Bosnians is...

-----------------Eduardo-------------
Miguel---Carvalho--Alves---Veloso
-----------------Pepe----------------
Simao---Meireles---Deco---Nani
----------------Almeida-----------

This is not the best portuguese team, but with so many injuries and the massive height advantage of bosnia, Portugal must use Almeida over liedson and veloso over duda. I read that bosingwa along with ronaldo will also not be able to play so miguel needs to play well in order for us to win. The key is to win by 2 or 3 goals so we can relax more in bosnia.

C Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world, and Portugal will miss him... Without his dribblings. passings and goals, BH is closer to World Cup

I am disgusted in some of the comments I have read. This is no doubt a LOSS for the team! However, we can pull together and get the results we need.

It's ridiculous people (especially the English) have criticized him about his going to the ground continuously. The man has been the most fouled player in the game, leaving his feet is the only way he can protect him self from injury. It seems as though the refs are not protecting him as they should because of this reputation that he has unfairly earned. With the injuries mounting potentially on of footballs greatest careers seem to be going the way of Paulo Futre. I hope the English press is proud.

Ronaldo is best player in the world and I think is better for him to not play those playoffs.
It will be very dangerous for his health to play specialy in Zenica
wish him fast recovering.
And I welcome Portguese fans to come to Bosnia

This truly is unfortunate for Real Madrid and football in general, but especially for Portugal. Everyone keeps saying Portugal don't need him but since when is Portugal so talented that they don't need a player of Ronaldo's calibre? I think that's pretty arrogant to say that Portugal don't need him. RM definitely need him, they look lost in attack without him. He has only been with them a short time but it is obvious that he will be their trigger man just like he was for Manchester United.
The good news is that Deco is playing well and Almeida returned to Werder Bremen today with style, scoring their second goal in the Europa League as they won 2-0. Makukula is also looking good down in the Turkish Super Lig and if Nani and Simao can keep contributing, I think Portugal will still go through to the World Cup.
Nani has really been struggling through so that kinda worries me because he'll be the one playing in Ronaldo's place against Bosnia.
easy buddy

wo easy dave, thats futebol, careful what you ask for, more rules dont make the game better it just complicates things, injury is part of the game. cant restrict defenders just so forwards can dance around easier

Im love football but it gets me upest how there r so many injuries..especially on good players!...portugal definitely need ronaldo and it looks like we wont have him...so the other players have 2 step up like nani and almeida and simao to score goals....i like real madrid but for some reason without ronaldo i cant really get excited for their games because they look sloppy and unappealing without him..i hope he recovers soon because as of right now portugal, madrid, and football itself are missing and needing him
Good

It's really a shame. I mean these stars getting injured so badly, look at Torres and Gerrard. A lot of other players too for that matter. Maybe football needs to be looked at again, its getting way too dangerous. I thought the beautiful game was about getting the ball not the players. This game has, is, and continues to be more physical each year. I mean it's not the days of tackles from behind and dropkicks like it was in the past but still. CR is a talent and thanks to that French player he's sitting at home. Slide tackles should only be made from the front of the player not the side or behind. None of this "I got the ball first bull" then go through the player. Just get the ball w/o the player, that simple, that's FUTBOL.

Bosnians helped pay Brujo Pepe to hurt CRonaldo. It's ok though, as long as he plays actual WC, we will be fine. I think by calling up Meira and Almeida, we should be ok. We play better, I think, without him on the pitch for now. The Bosnians are talking a lot of crap, and they have a great team. It's gonna be great two games.

Too bad, but through out the WC qualifiers he was not effective.
Just like MESSI for Argentina. It will be tough against Bosnia, looks like Boswinga will also be missing. Hope for the best, but expecting the worst.
