Carlos Queiroz calls up Cristiano Ronaldo for play-offs

Portugal announce 23-man squad

Cristiano Ronaldo has been included in Carlos Queiroz’s list of 23 players for the World Cup qualifiers with Bosnia on 14th and 18th of November.

The Fifa World Player of the Year’s fitness has been the source of mass debate in Portugal and Spain in recent weeks, with the player’s club, Real Madrid, insisting that Ronaldo is unfit to take part in the crucial double-header next week.

However, Queiroz announced on Friday his intention to include Ronaldo in his squad and have the 24-year-old assessed by his own medical staff, with the hope that the former Manchester United man can play some part against Bosnia.

The squad includes two new names, with Hilario (Chelsea) and Fabio Coentrao (Benfica) being rewarded with first-ever call-ups. Meanwhile, Hugo Almeida returns after injury ruled him out of recent qualifiers, while Ricardo Costa is back in the frame having enjoyed a good run in the heart of the Wolfsburg defence of late.

Goalkeepers:

Hilário

Being a Chelsea fan, a few comments on the players from that team :-
Carvalho - Back to his best, as seen in Sunday's match v/s Manchester United. Must play.
Ferreira - Dependable, but has not played much, so "game sharpness" might not be there.
Hilario - Dependable, but has played just 3-4 times this season & was injured the last time he played, so again "game sharpness" might not be there. But besides being a good keeper with a cool head, he is also a calm, cultured & loyal person, so really good to see him finally honoured by this call-up.
Deco - A mixed bag for Chelsea, mainly because English football is very rough, but should do better in continental games. Should play.

I agree with everyone that miereles is useless in the portugal squad and hopefully with Tiago back, he will be just a bench player as cover. So far he has been useless and a shadow on the pitch. Makukula might have been an option over edinho, and micael has been playing well. However, because they dont practice as a team alot, you need some cohesion and by altering the line-up drastically you risk losing some important steps in quality in the last games versus the earlier games in qualifying where he was constantly shifting players and tactics. Also, really, ferrieira, i do agree that he should have been left out and perriera called up instead. but really only 11 - 14 players will see the pitch and the rest are there to watch. The questions are what 11 he will use and what subs would he make, lets jsut hope those starting eleven dont include miereles in midfield.

dont think Q will go for such an attacking line up -

We need to be carefull with bosnia's goal scoring abilty - AWAY GOALS COUNT DOUBLE.

----------------------Eduardo-----------------
Miguel----R.Carvalho---B.Alves-----Duda
------------------------Pepe-----------------------
---------R.Meireles-----------Tiago------

I don't think Bosnia will "park the bus" at all. If they do play more on the defensive then they won't be playing to their strength.
They're going to try to score right from the beginning because they know if they don't then Portugal will wear them down and score several goals on the counterattack. See Bosnia v Spain where Spain won 5-2: Bosnia went all out trying to score at the beginning of the game and nearly scored several times but were unable to break through Spains defense. Because they failed to score, Spain punished them and went up 3-0 before the half and scored 2 more later before Bosnia finally scored 2 at the end of the game.

You have to kidding, Hugo Almeida what is Queiroz thinking, we have done so well without him why do we waste a spot on this bum! He is slower than mud and has no drive, is this the only striker Carlos can call on.

Where is MAKAKULA ? Why callup an injured Ronaldo ?
CQ has to go, qualify or don't qualify. Richardo Costa was a total disaster in the EURO 2008 qualifiers, just because he plays with to 2 Bosnian's, does not mean he is worthy of a callup. Raúl Meireles is another one who has been totally useless (except for 1 pass to ALVES against Albania). I wonder how many passes he has completed or how many shots on goal he has.... constantly losing the ball..... Oh well... hope for the best, expect the worst.
BOSNIA

If Bosnia think they're going to play attcking football against Portugal they're in for a rude awakening. We're not armenia or Belgium we can counter with the best of them and that back four will get pillaged. I pray bosnia doesn't plan to park the bus in the back field and play for a draw in Portugal I want them to attack. We will qualify because Portugal is the superior team.

Well calling up ronaldo is good because he can support portugal, scare bosnia, and become the captain from the bench...All Tactics People !!....i like the Fabio C and Hugo call up as well because they are doing well and we need a winger and a big striker...i believe portugal will succeed in the first leg...bosnia are a threat but the talent we have is too great....Forca Portugal!!!!
Come on Seleccao!!

Why are people complaining about injured Pedro Mendes being in the side? HE'S NOT!! Where the hell are you getting that from?

But looking forward to the games - we will do well to not underestimate Dzeko's pace I reckon. I agree with someone about not having Bosingwa to counter that, a shame for sure.

A tidy home win first would be lovely, but it's going to be very hard...

How can u fools still be calling for Quaersma , Shut up already u have absolutely no knowledge of the game he's played 69 MINUTES IN SERIE A why would he get called ?? He's begging to come back to Portugal cuz he cant even find a spot on the Reserves .. So why would u even think of calling him u people need to shut up already .. a 25% Ronaldo is way better that a 100% fit Quaresma .. Coentro is showing promise and hes lookin like a future star for Portugal .. not an arrogant selfish playboy like Quaresma .. I agree with Fresh Ronaldo should not play its simply tactics .. Bosnia now have to worry and gameplan around Ronaldo .. Forca Portugal !! SHUT UP ABOUT QUARESMA U FOOLS , GET YOUR KNOWLEDGE UP THEN COMMENT !!!!!

There is a very slim chance that ronaldo will see any minutes during any of the games. Queiroz is only calling him up because he is the captain. He will sit on the bench with queiroz to provide support for the players. Costa is not a bad move either. He may not start, but even if he doesn't play, he will still provide some information on dzeko and misimovic. Even without ronaldo we have more than enough quality to defeat bosnia. It is extremely important to come out of the first leg with a 2-0 or 3-0 win to give us some breathing space for the match in bosnia. I say 2-0 in lisbon and 1-1 in bosnia.

Pains me to not rip on CQ, but not much to complain about. I would have liked to have seen Viana, Micael, or J Pereira, but they wouldn't have featured anyway. Hopefully Ferriera won't feature either...

I like the Coentrao call for CR cover (who should not play IMO as he's not fit and even if he is won't have match fitness). The Costa call up was clever as I'm sure he can provide a lot of info about Dzeko and Misimovic.

I like Almeida getting called up as he started today and is the best striker we have (and brings much needed size against a big team). I would have gone with Nuno or Makakula as well, but with Liedson and Edinho as cover, I like the squad.

Anyone still calling for RQ is out of there mind...he needs to get loaned out somewhere where he can play before he gets recalled. Not to mention his record for the NT is atrocious.
Queiroz is still an idiot

I hope Queiroz didn't really mean he was going to play CR7 for even a few minutes because one hard tackle against CR7 and its over he wont play for the next leg if he thinks he's able to play I think Queiroz should play Coentrao on the wing instead of Nani. He continues to call-up Raul Meireles who continues to disappoint for country and club. I'm glad to see Fabio Coentrao get recognition he's fantastic but Queiroz continues to ignore Makukula or Nuno Gomes so instead he recalls up Edinho. I only want to see CR7 as a player on the bench to motivate our players THAT'S IT!

Also how sad is it that he calls up three unfit players, P.Mendes, H.Almeida, and Ronaldo when he clearly has fit and in form players ready to go...Also the call-up of Ricardo Costa shows how desperate and afraid he is of Bosnia...He needed to call up such a shit defender because he so happens to play with Misimović and Džeko in Wolfsburg...Doesn't the guy get video footage of the games they play in?...Next thing you know he wll call up shitty Quaresma when Portugal has to play a game with Argentina or something because he plays with Diego Milito, Javier Zanetti, etccc

looks good, I like the new additions to the squad and I think Coentrao was called up because of yes his form but also as cover if Ronaldo can't play any minutes and they need winger as a sub fro simao or nani, too bad quaresma isnt playing for inter. Costa was a smart call-up because of his knowledge of Bosnia's attacking pair. He also can play on the left if I am not mistaken. Sucks that Bosingwas isnt playing, we will miss his speed against their attack and for our counter-attack.

My line-up:

-----------------Eduardo----------------------

--Miguel--Carvalho--Alves---Veloso(Costa)

------------Pepe----------Tiago(Miereles)-----

-----Simao-------Deco--------Nani(Coentrao)-

----------------------Almeida(Liedson)-------

**() are substitutions made if things are working or use two strikers in a 4-4-2 and take off Pepe.

Yup...
Once again I am left shaking my head after seeing the chices CQ made.
But now that I am re-thinking things...CQ is only going to use about 14 players of the said squad. So there isn't a point complaining about the calling up of Hilario(doesn't appear often for Chelsea, if at all), , Paulo Ferreira (really, I swear this guy is only called up for the throw ins) & Duda (now that Veloso has shown he can also play at left back, his spot should've been saved for someone like Viana).

But I doubt (and hope) all of those will play.

Queiroz calls up 23 men because he has to. as far as he knows he's only got about 14 players in the squad.

My starting XI right here:

Eduardo
Miguel - Alves - Pepe/Carvalho - Veloso
Moutinho
Deco --- Tiago
Simao --- Nani/Coentrao
Liedson.

Ah Queiroz why must you call up Ricardo Costa, R.Meireles (Both shit), P.Ferreira (Doesn’t even play), P.Mendes (Isn’t he injured?), H.Almeida (He just got back from injury), and Ronaldo (He isn’t fit!)…If he was a good coach then he would’ve known to call up Nuno Assis, Ruben Micael, Makukula, Hugo Viana. Joao Pereira (All are going through some good form), and Nuno Gomes (EXPERIENCE)…Let’s just hope Queiroz’s shit squad can pull off the play-off win and get us to the World Cup…

I would use this formation due to the height advantage of bosnia and all our injuries.

------------Hilario--------------
Miguel---Carvalho--Alves---Veloso
-----------------Pepe----------------
Simao----Meireles--Deco---Nani
----------------Almeida--------

I like the call ups of coentrao and hilario, eduardo will most likely start, but hilario is better in my opinion.

I'm glad that Coentrao finally got the callup. I think that Queiroz was not smart in calling up Ronaldo. He should have called up Makukula or Viana.
