Portugal gain upper hand in World Cup play-off
Portugal 1-0 Bosnia
Portugal will travel to Bosnia for the second leg on Wednesday with a slim one-goal advantage, thanks to Bruno Alves' first-half header.
In a surprisingly open match the Seleccao had chances to build up a bigger lead but that would have been harsh on a Bosnia side that lived up to the pre-match billing as a good attacking unit. Indeed, the visitors may feel aggrieved to be leaving Lisbon with a defeat after hitting the woodwork on three occasions.
If we were nervous tonight, how on earth are we going to survive Wednesday's match?
Portugal 1-0 Bosnia
94' Tiago has the final chance of the match, hitting his volley well but too close to Hasagic who saves on the line. The referee blows the final whistle.
93' More panic in the Portugal box. The referee brings relief as a Bosnian forward controls the ball with his hand.
92' Four minutes of stoppage time. A well worked free-kick from Portugal ends with Meireles' cross just evading Pepe's head.
88' Incredible incredible let-off for Portugal!!! Bosnia seem certain to score twice but the ball smacks against the woodwork on both occasions. Is that the piece of luck that sends Portugal to South Africa?
87' Simao Sabrosa comes off for Hugo Almeida. Ricardo Carvalho takes the captain's armband for Portugal.
86' Muratovic is replaced by young Bosnian striker Pjanic.
85' Portugal showing their nerves. Coentrao loses the ball in a dangerous position and panic ensues in the Portugal box, with the defenders at last clearing the danger.
83' Deco hits the ball into the wall and it is the Chelsea man's last piece of action as Tiago is thrown into the fray by Queiroz.
81' Free-kick for Portugal right on the edge of the box, slap-bang in the middle of the goal. Great chance for Portugal.
80' On comes Muslimovic for Misimovic. Tiago warms up on the sidelines.
76' Dzeko at last appears, cutting inside and firing a powerful shot that Eduardo is happy to see fizz into the side-netting.
74' The inexhaustable Liedson somehow manages to get the better of two Bosnian defenders near the corner flag, earning a huge cheer from the crowd.
72' Misimovic looses sight of the ball when he could have been clean through. Eduardo scrambles the ball away. Let-off for Portugal.
70' Twenty minutes to go. Another sensational peice of play by Pepe sets up Fabio Coentrao who runs at the defence but produces a weak shot. Yellow Card Spahic for a crude challenge on Pepe. It's the third Bosnian who has ruled himself out of the second match.
68' It's a surprise substitution as Nani is the player brought off by Queiroz and the Benfica man runs on.
66' Fabio Coentrao strips off and gets ready for his Portugal debut in his home stadium.
63' Superb play from Pepe who works the ball to Liedson. The striker lays the ball off to Simao who hits a powerful shot just over.
61' Simao turns one way and the other, creates space for a shot, and his effort is deflected for a comfortable save for Hasagic.
60' Excellent spell of pressure from Portugal.
59' Next it's Meireles who threatens, hitting a low shot that Hasagic saves.
58' Deco comes close with a powerful shot that just clears the bar.
57' Portugal inches away from doubling their lead!!! Good run from Deco, whose cross finds Liedson. The Sporting striker brilliantly turns his man but with just the goalkeeper in front of him incredibly lifts his shot over the bar.
55' Play largely confined to midfield. Both sets of players seem to be affected by nerves given what's at stake.
51' Duda hits the free-kick into the wall and the danger is cleared.
50' Scappy start to the second half. Portugal snap out of defence with Pepe surging forward and Nani winning a free-kick in a dangerous position 10 yards outside the box.
47' Yellow Card for Rahimic for cutting out a Portugal counter-attack with his hand. He too misses the second leg.
46' Second half kicks off. Bosnia attacking towards their boisterous fans.
A highly entertaining half comes to an end with Portugal enjoying a vital lead. The hosts looked good in the opening half hour and were rewarded with a Bruno Alves goal. But Bosnia are far from out of it, and had Portugal's defence wobbling in the final 15 minutes of the first half. Some sorting out to do by Queiroz.
45' Half-time whistle goes with Pepe and Alves in heated discussion as Bosnia end the half well on top.
44' Next Ibisevic hits a free-kick inches over the bar. Portugal need the break fast.
43' Bosnia hit the bar!!! Ibricic rises highest at the near post and crashes a header against the woodwork.
42' Bosnia having a purple patch. The visitors are applying heavy pressure on the home defence. A series of corners have the Portugal defence backtracking.
40' A worry for Portugal. Bruno Alves appears to be carrying an injury.
39' Eduardo saves Portugal! Salihovic fires a powerful cross-shot towards the net and Eduardo does well to block it with his legs. The rebound shot the same player is deflected out for a corner.
37' Yellow Card. Another crunching challenge, this time on Liedson leaves the referee with no option but to brandish the yellow card to Muratovic. The big defender missed the 2nd leg in Bosnia.
34' Bosnia almost hit straight back. Ibisevic is left criminally unmarked in the six-yard box, swivels, shoots but the ball is flies over the bar. Close shave...
31' GOAL!!!!!!!!!! Nani again does well to fly down the right wing. This time his cross is a peach. Liedson just fails to get the vital touch but BRUNO ALVES is at the second post to head in from point-blank range.
30' Paulo Ferreira goes on a surging run, plays a nifty give and go with Liedson and tries his luck from distance. His low shot brings a sprawling save out of Hasagic. Meireles then forces the keeper to tip over the bar.
27' Good pressure from Portugal now. A corner and a free-kick rain into the visitors' box but the Bosnian defence holds firm.
26' Simao hits the effort well but his shot clips the top of the wall and the danger is over.
25' Liedson wins a free-kick in just outside the box!!!
24' Portugal are now bossing the match. A clever pass is slipped forward by Duda to Simao who just fails to get there before the keeper.
20' Good spell of pressure by Portugal. A corner causes confusion in the Bosnia box. The ball eventually comes to Bruno Alves who doesn't catch his shot well and the ball slides wide.
19' Excellent move by Portugal creates real danger in the Bosnia box. Deco dribbles through the middle, plays in Nani, but the Manchester United man just fails to get in a shot.
17' Nani goes on two excellent breaks. His first cross just evades Liedson, his second is easily gathered by goalkeeper Hasagic.
15' Ibisevic puts in a crunching challenge on Duda and picks up a yellow card.
14' Deco plays his third loose pass of the match, grabs his opponent and is shown the yellow card.
13' Ibisevic goes on a probing run but shoots wildly wide. Seconds later Dzeko does likewise.
10' Bosnia again respond immediately. Nadarevic gets his head on a corner and heads just over. Excellent start to the match.
9' Portugal threaten!!! Nani again causes problems winning a free-kick. A cross is swung in, Carvalho heads across goal and Liedson gets on the end of it, heading just wide.
6' Bosnia respond with Misimovic hitting a shot over the bar from just outside the area. Nani immediately does well to skip past his marker but his cross sails over the bar.
4' First shot of the match is for Portugal. A hasty clearance falls to Meireles who fires in a powerful cross-shot that flashes not far wide.
2' Cagey start. Pepe shows his authority with a couple of crunching clearances.
Both national anthems sung in full voice. Over 60,000 people singing "A Portuguesa" at the top of their voices - incredible sight and sound.
The atmosphere is building nicely at what promises to be a packed Estadio da Luz. The Portuguese players receive a huge cheer as the starting line-ups are announced, none more so than former Benfica favourite Simao. Carlos Queiroz has pulled something of a surprise by selecting Paulo Ferreira at right-back, in for the injured Bosingwa. The rest of the team is as expected.

We are more motivated than portugase players. This win is everything for us!
For the first time Bosnia will play in WFC in South Africa.
Sretno Bosna!
Rolando is missed but one has to know that the rest of the players are all Stars in the Portugues Team. In the last 2 years Rolando has not yet scored a goal for portugal. Whatever the outcome i am +ve they will be in SA next year.
1.play in theare in zenica -that pleace is so dangerous
2.our state skrou-up them for tickets
3.ronaldo not play
we are done
Bfore starting our home game all the pressure on our players becouse that away goal if they score that then it wiil be hard in Bosnia thank god it has never happened and now i think more pressure with in bosnians i dont think they plaids that well under pressur as we have seen yesterday.but it will very importent to scor an away gol to us that will be great.
0-0 enough
0-1 enough
1-1 enough
2-1inogh
2-2,3-3..................enough
VIVA PORTUGAL!!!!!!!!!!
Whoever it is that thinks Bosnia will win 2-0 is delusional!! Bosnia does not have a good defense and they will be without 3 starters. Trust me, that will make a huge difference. Bosnia will be chasing the game from the beginning and Portugal are an excellent counter-attacking team.
Bosnia will score in Zenica. However, it will cost them at least one goal and now they have no away goals of their own to counter any that Portugal will score.
Portugal may lose in Zenica 2-1 or 3-2 but they will still go through on away goals. Have faith!!!!!
Go there with pride, confidence, strength and just be COOL!!!!
Love to see the Portugal team in the WC with Ronaldo!!!
We've been posting on this site for about 3 years and I find you as one finest contributors to this site. I've enjoyed the banter, passion, and opinions which help us rejoice and suffer with the national team.
I don't completely disagree with a 4-4-2 approach but I'm not sure the players we have are suited for this formation given the limitations of our players and lack of confidence but I have an open mind towards anything that can produce more scoring. I am still hopeful if we advance that Danny will be able to play on to the team. After the numerous flops like Quaresma, I am hopeful he could become a force.
The only thing I'm sure about on this team is that Alves, Pepe, and Carvalho need to be on the field. I know some folks don't like this approach but I believe you play your best players and forget about the traditional formation or what would be ideal. Given the Duda experiment which looked promising at first has become a disaster not only for his defending but the qualities he was suppose to bring are vanishing with each game (lack of quality crosses, gives up ball to easy, etc.) and the limited Ferreira, you need these three players on the field. I think it will come down to these 3 players as the keys to victory in Bosnia and we will need 1 goal to advance.
Lets hope for the best so we can advance and that God one day sends Portugal a quality striker to take away our longsuffering.
I think it is the formation more than anything.. besides remind me how many goals CR has had in this campaign? Less than Simao...
personally i thought the wall was too close on both instances and Simao on the first one that was headed away looked like it was going to curl straight in.
Of course when Deco took the free kick the wall was close too.. but kicking it into their ankles was his usual shooting prowess.
CR is a good player.. an important player for us but there are many good players on our team that are in a funk because of the lack of confidence placed on them whether it be for club or country.
Tony you always make good posts..
Sorry I was getting confused with the portuguese spelling for shit... merda.. you can clearly see how easy it is to confuse the two when they both mean the same.
Queer-Eyes of course can't see the connection or smell.
Any one thinking that our offense would carry us in these two games is mistaken. We can't get into a shoot out with these guys given our weak finishing.
Calling out all the CR critics, there are no proven goal scorers our our team, we have players who can pass and create a few chances but no finishing sting. Anyone who thinks the likes of Simao, Nani, Miereles, Deco, are going to score in a match like this are mistaken. The goals will come from Leidson or our center backs. Don't let the games against Malta and Hungary fool you. These were one offs but you saw the true lack of scoring that Portugal has without CR.
Once again the ususal whipping boys Ferreira, Duda, and Meireles gave us little or nothing. Miguel has been playing more than Ferreira and should have been playing. The subsitutions in the game made no sense. Fabio C is worthy of a call up but play him in a friendly or later in the game but to take out Nani who was doing pretty good made no sense that early in the game.
Despite our lack of quality players in certain positions and questionable coaching decisions, we have a shot. I think we will need to score 1 goal in Bosnia to secure the spot. Our qualification will depend on our defense as we can't score.
Go Portugal!!
Also Deco as well as many others like Meireles would pass straight to a Bosnian without any pressure on.
PNT hasn't been the same without Miguel he has speed to cover back and manages to make darting runs that make defenders over committ.. Ferreira doesn't even get into Chelsea reserves.. is brutal in the air as evidenced when Germany and Ballack tooled him repeatedly.. so of course he was Queer-Eyes selection against a team good in the air, it makes sense to lowercase "i".
Merieles and Tiago are about as useful as Brock Lesnar getting massive boob implants, besides being big tits no one wants them.
Also after wanting to play a cripple just in case they could score a timely goal.. he doesn't call up a striker who has had many timely goals for portugal over the years.. in Nuno Gomes.. a guy that would work well slotted just behind Leidson..
Also if the PNT fans were a murder victim we would've been killed with a soft blunt object. Like bashing a guy over the head repeatedly with a couch/settee cushion until the blunt force trauma caused by the pillow bores the victim to death.
I mean an ineffective 4-3-3 over and over again hoping that the boredom in play will beat the Bosnian's.
How many reptitive games does it take to acknowledge that the majority of our players play better in a 4-4-2 formation, besides a 4-3-3 is really a 4-5-1 it is a lone striker any way you slice it.
Did anyone notice as well that when Portugal scored Ronaldo didn't look that excited.. so much for the moral support..
the big 3 in D were the reason for todays win.. Carvalho, Alves, and Pepe.. were giants, and looked to win balls, and get in the way when they couldn't. We will need them on Wednesday..
BTW Fresh the better team was in 98 but 93's team would've qualified too if the referee in the Italy game had given Baggio a red card when he drop kicked Baia or had called any of the two offsides... I am sure Queer-Eyes had something to do with that loss too. We'll have to review the games..lol
Queiroz selection & tactics are again questionable, playing a rather defensive line up. Duda, Ferreira,Meirelis, played very average whilst Simao was non existent for most of the game.
Deco had a complete shocker & he should have been pulled at 55min. Fábio Coentrão was a mistake! taking Nani off was absolutely insane. Carvallho,Nani and especially Pepe were our best players.
Leidson did well but needed additional support & Almeida with two minutes to go was a waste.
In all we rode our luck, & hopefully we will go through.
I hope the federation is taking note.
We cant go on with this coach whatever happens, there is no rhythm or much confidence in the team. bad passes, poor shooting. This isn't portugal who has graced previous championships.
portugal of old would have won this group and played bosnia for fun and still won.
Meirles again. totally useless.
Forca Portugal
Zenica is going to be a different game, those 3 post hits will go in at Zenica. We need to drop Duda and get Miguel in there, Duda is a dud.
Well, not a great game for Portugal but the result is important nonetheless and the best part is that we kept a clean sheet.
There is still everything to play for in Bosnia on Wednesday but I'm confident that Portugal can score a goal and hold Bosnia to 2 goals or less and we're in.
Lowercase "i" is doing all he can to ensure his ineptitude rec ord stays intact.
Queer-Eyes selections...
who hasn't played all year and most of last... Ferreira.. ha ha I will fool the other manager into confidence by calling one of the worst players at that position on to the team...
What a genuis "i" am...
lol
FORCA PORTUGAL!!!
On their day they are as good as any other FIFA player of the year, Deco can outplay Kaka, Nani can outperform anyone and Simao can freekick anyone...
Go Boys!!!!
Forca Portugal!
