Classy Portugal book berth in South Africa!

Bosnia 0-1 Portugal (aggregate 0-2)

World Cup 2010Portugal emblemA goal from Raul Meireles gave Portugal a richly deserved victory after a controlled performance in Bosnia. The hosts were never truly in it, with the trio of Carvalho, Alves and Pepe dealing easily with Bosnia's strategy of hitting Portugal with an aerial bombardment.

The win is a personal triumph for Carlos Queiroz, who guides his country to the World Cup at the second time of asking. It's a full house this past decade as Portugal qualify for every major tournament since Euro 2000. South Africa here we come!

Bosnia 0-1 Portugal (aggregate score: 0-2)

94' Full time. Portugal are in the 2010 World Cup!!!!!!!!!!!! A performance oozing with class proved too much for the hosts. Bosnia's players show good sportsmanship in congratulating the Portuguese.

93' Edinho scoops a chance over the bar when it seems easier to score from six yards out after being played in by Deco.

92' The man-mountain Pepe sweeps all before him and runs the ball into the corner. It's all over bar the shouting! Bosnia have been hugely disappointing, playing far worse than in Lisbon.

91' Referee gives four minutes of added time.

89' Portugal playing keep-ball. Miguel Veloso comes on for Liedson to eat up more seconds.

88' Goalkeeper Hasagic again saves his side further embarrasment. Bruno Alves latches onto a free-kick turns and shoots powerfully. The keeper does well to keep it out.

87' Bosnia can't even get the ball out of thier own half.

85' Portugal in complete control. Five minutes to go until party time!

84' Edinho shows neat piece of skill to bamboozle his marker and fire in a shot that bounces awkardly in front of the keeper who keeps it out of the net with his forehead!

83' More good play from Duda, having surely his best game in a Portugal shirt.

81' Bosnia almost score! Dzeko has space in the box, swivels and volleys inches wide of the post.

80' Deco comes on for Simao.

78' Portugal almost score again. Carvalho and Liedson fail to produce a clinical finish when in very scorable positions.

77' Red Card Red Card for Salihovic who picks up his second yellow. It's chaos as the furious crowd hurl a series of objects onto the pitch, one of which strikes the linesman who needs two minutes of treatment. Disgraceful scenes.

74' Bosnia almost snatch back a goal. Pjanic hits a free-kick from 35 yards wonderfully well and Eduardo produces a flying save to tip the ball over the bar.

72' Queiroz makes his first move and it's a strange one. Nani - Portugal's best player up to now - comes off and on comes striker Edinho.

71' Raul Meireles bursts through after a wonderful chipped pass from Simao and hits a fine shot first-time with his left foot that flies just past the post.

67' Portugal again a whisker away from scoring a second. Nani again causes chaos on the wing, with Liedson just failing to get enough on his shot which is deflected wide.

66' Suddenly Bosnia look set to score and as a dangerous cross fizzes across the box but Paulo Ferreira produces an outstanding interception to prevent a certain goal.

65' Bosnia's attack have been desperately disappointing after being talked up so much. Another ball is pumped into the box and for the umpteenth time Bruno Alves jumps highest to clear the danger.

64' Dzeko almost bursts through but the burly striker is pulled up by the referee for handball.

63' The ball switches to the other end of the field, and Paulo Ferreira makes a timely interception.

62' Duda is looking good coming forward. A dangerous break by the Malaga man ends with a cross that flies into the side-netting.

60' Portugal surely can't let it slip now. Bosnia need three goals to turn it around, but it's Portugal who look the more likely. Simao again comes close to wriggling through on goal.

57' Superb spell from Portugal. Two quick breaks set up chances for Simao then Meireles but both chances are spurned. Yellow Card It's proving too much for Dzeko who picks up a yellow card for fierce protests.

55' GOAL! GOAL!!!!!!!!!! Raul Meireles makes up for his first-half miss with an all-important goal!!! Liedson and Nani combine perfectly to play in Meireles, who, cool as you like slots the ball into the corner of the net. South Africa here we come.

52' Nani does well to win a throw-in deep in the Bosnia half despite being outnumbered. The Manchester United winger has provided a good outlet to relieve the pressure tonight.

50' Bosnia come straight back. Pjanic hits a dangerous shot narrowly wide.

48' Portugal close to scoring again!!! Nani produces a brilliant turn in the box to create a scoring opportunity for himself, and Bosnia are again saved by their goalkeeper!

47' Danger for Portugal. Dzeko looks to be clean through but the referee blows for offside. In any event Eduardo had smothered the shot bravely.

46' Striker Muslimovic comes on for midfielder Medunjanin.

Portugal will be happy to have maintained their lead in a poor quality first-half, no doubt influenced by the importance of what is at stake and the poor quality of the pitch. Indeed Carlos Queiroz's team created by only clear chance of the half, with Raul Meireles failing to take advantage of a one-on-one opportunity. Portugal 45 minutes from South Africa?

45' Half-time whistle goes.

44' Ball comes back towards the Portugal goal, with Duda showing good composure to run the ball upfield away from the danger zone.

42' Good spell of pressure by Bosnia. A dangerous break by Dzeko ends with a dangerous low cross that Ferreira hacks away for a corner. Danger is cleared.

39' Simao conducts another rapid counter-attack for Portugal, eventually finding Duda who delays his shot and is croweded out. The ball quickly switches to the other end of the pitch where a cross is comfortably pouched by Eduardo.

37' Yellow Card Nadarevic is shown the yellow card for a nasty challenge on Liedson.

34' Real danger for Portugal! Dzeko does superbly well to hold up the ball and set up Ibisevic who hits a powerful shot towards goal but it flies wide.

33' Another sensational interception by Pepe snuffs out danger near the corner flag.

31' Portugal are slowly imposing their passing game, but the poor playing surface is making it difficult. Simao is betrayed by the ball taking a crazy bounce of a divet.

29' Just as well for Portugal that injury doubt Bruno Alves was passed fit for the match. The centre-back makes two monster clearances after jumping about a mile in the air.

26' Yellow CardYellow Card  Two yellow cards in quick succession for Jahic and Simao for a poorly timed tackles.

24' Portugal a whisker away from taking the lead!!! Superb counter-attack led by Duda ends with Tiago setting up Meireles who is clean through. The FC Porto midfielder's shot is saved by Hasagic with his legs and Meireles immediately puts his head in his hands. Great chance goes begging.

22' More commanding play from Pepe in the middle of the park. It's a scrappy game, and with one quarter of the match gone neither goalkeeper has had a serious save to make.

18' Portugal have a good spell of possession in the Bosnia half, but the hosts break and Ibisevic fires in a low shot that a diving Eduardo gathers on the ground.

15' Two chances for Bosnia in quick succession. Duda is caught out and forces Ricardo Carvalho into an excellent last-ditch tackle. The ball comes back into the box and Dzeko gets his head on it but the ball is deflected over the bar. The corner comes to nothing.

14' Nani picks up a loose clearance and tries his luck from distance, but the shot goes high and wide.

13' Portugal look dangerous on the counter-attack. Nani fails by a whisker to play in Liedson.

10' Pepe looks to be continuing his fine form from the first leg, not giving his oppositors any chance in one against ones or in the air.

9' Duda gives away a corner with a defective clearance. The defence holds firm again.

6' Danger in the Portugal box. The Bosnians find a way through the right side of Portugal's defence and cause panic close to goal. Pepe clears the danger but Tiago gives away a careless free-kick. Bruno Alves, imperious in the air, deals with the danger.

5' First corner and first chance and it's Portugal who create the danger. Simao's delivery is met by Tiago whose header is on target but to close to Hasagic, who saves comfrortably.

3' Pepe gets a painful blow on the head but shrugs it off. Another long ball is hit high towards the Portugal area. Bruno Alves deals with the danger.

1' The first 60 seconds give an indication of what we can probably expect from this game. An early free-kick for the hosts is pumped into the box. Portugal's defence clears to Nani who tries to launch a counter-attack, winning a free-kick.

The Portuguese national anthem is played but one can hardly hear a note as the band is completely drowned out by a deafening chorus of boos reverburating around the stadium. That will earn the Bosnians few friends, and if the Portuguese players needed firing up, that should do the trick. The home national anthem is sung in full voice.

Kick-off approaches at the small but packed stadium. Deco has failed to shake off the injury he picked up in the first leg and starts the match on the bench. His place is taken by Tiago. Apart from that, it's an unchanged line-up for Portugal. Bosnia also are hit with an injury blow, as playmaker Misimovic is out injured, not even fit enough for a place on the bench.

Starting line-ups:

Bosnia-Herzegovina:
Hasagic, Nadarevic, Jahic, Pandza, Bajramovic, Pjanic, Ibricic, Salihovic, Medunjanin, Dzeko, Ibisevic

Subs: Asmir Begovic, Adnan Mravac, Damir Mirvic, Dzemal Berberovic, Ninoslav Milenkovic, Dario Damjanovic, Zlatan Muslimovic

Portugal:

Eduardo, Paulo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho, Bruno Alves, Duda, Pepe, Raul Meireles, Tiago, Nani, Liedson, Simao.

Subs: Hilario, Miguel, Deco, Rolando, Miguel Veloso, Hugo Almeida, Edinho

Thanks, we appreciate it. But there is no joke here my friend. The only joke was the pitch at Zenica and how Dzeko wasn't all that he was hyped up to be. Both teams played well, but to be honest, if Bosnia was pigeon held by Portugal(and you think we are a joke), how would they fair in the WC? I have respect for Bosnia team/fans and wish you all the best.

Congratulations to the Portugal Team, they have a very defense, cant front, they played "not that bad", but guys lets be real...how could it be 0:4 for portugal?I mean, you guys are jokes, portugal had at least 2 very good chances, but they failed, we played better in Portugal, much much better, it could be 1:3 for us...but it was all luck, 2 crossroads and 1 post?Guys please, I respect Portugal as a soccer team, but I thought that we would lose 2 or 3:0 in Portugal, but I was wrong, but indeed we did improved very well in Soccer, and yo we can get better, so best wishes to the Portugal team, it was a really good game! :)
PS: Even if we would lose 0:10, we still would sing the song "BOSNIA CHAMPION OOOOOOH"
Good luck Portugal!!
Congratulations

I want to congratulate the players and the coaching staff for making portugal proud today.

Ive been a big critic of this coach and I still am, but I must give credit where its due. he has qualified us.

Questions still remain for me & other fans on how far CQ will lead us, his tactics and player selections

I can only hope that the pressure is now off ,CQ can start to experiment and develop a more balanced team that can play various formations, that can score lots of goals.

lets hope!!
congratulations to my loving Portuguese fans all over the world.

I think this is one of the greatest WC qualifying camping of all time.they virtually out of it 5 months ago.but what a great courage they have shown through out the campaign. There was some memorable moment in it which will never forget in my life as a Portuguese fan .Attacking wise they did not play well defensively they are with in the top four of the world.
with Bosingwa,Ranaldo,Quaresma,Danny & Pedro Mendes in future they must be great attacking force as well.
future is looking well for Portugal.

(I love Portugal)

Were going to the world cup"YEAH!!! :)". It was a hard couples of months, but we made it and we should be proud of our players. In the beginning it was hard, couldn't score players were injured cristiano ronaldo also. If it was any other team they would lose all there confidence. Like him or not we need cristiano ronaldo cause, 2 or 3 defenders go on him and that creates spaces for good shots, and when hes on hes the best at creating plays and scoring goals. One more thing VIVA PORTUGAL!!!!
Forca Portugal!!!

Where would we be without the trio of Bruno Alves, Ricardo Carvalho, and Pepe...The game was pretty much boring until my favorite player in the whole world scored (lol)...Even though he scored a great goal though, I still think his crap...The RTPI commentator basically even said he was shit during the first half lol...Also how about all those other chances he wasted...Our attack was really sad to watch again...I can’t believe how poor we were...I mean Simao, Nani, Liedson were non existent all game...It was real frustrating to see them misplaying and losing the ball all the time...Also Edinho and Deco were poor off the bench...Edinho showed how we still lack quality forwards by missing that easy tap in at the end of the game and Deco added some better movement in the attack, but was overall poor in disturbing the ball...With that said, I still think we deserved to win...I mean Bosnia were talking a big game heading into this second leg, but again the trio of Alves, Carvalho, and Pepe shut them all up...Also I hope Bosnia gets in real trouble for the shit their fans did...I mean throwing objects from the stands and one of those objects hitting the linesmen...Yes we would all like to hurt a ref sometimes, but still you have to respect them...Anyways we are in the world cup and hopefully the problems we had in qualifying can be solved in six months...

Also I always believed and hoped we would make it to South Africa...At times it didn’t look possible, but I always believed to the very end...I thought our Euro 08 qualifying campaign was tough to watch, but this qualifying campaign takes the cake...It had everything- some good games, some very bad games, injuries, coaching problems, some players playing like crap and with no heart, a play-off round, but in the end we achieved our goal which was to qualify for the world cup...It wasn’t pretty, but God dammit we made it...However at this moment I still fill like we shouldn’t be there because we have such an idiot coach running things, but you know what a lot can change in six months...I hope Queiroz learns from his mistakes and calls up the best possible team to make it far in the world cup...Hopefully we pull off a France from 2006...If you guys remember, they were complete crap in qualifying and nearly missed the big show, but they ended up making the final of the world cup and almost won it...Also Ronaldo, let’s face it you were complete shit for our national team this year and didn’t even record a single goal or assist in qualifying, but I hope you can get your shit together and make all the haters and doubters like myself and bang in the goals next summer...

FORCA PORTUGAL!!!!!!!!!

Finally I can breath ! I would be the first to say that I never liked the ideal of Carlos Q. coaching the National side DURING the qualifying. But as I said on the older posts "if in fact we do qualify then I believe that he may have the luck to maybe win the World Cup".He has made serious mistakes in the past and he continues to make the same mistakes ,but on the world stage, I believe he will do all the right things that will end the choking that Portugal has suffered since 1966. After our loss to Greece I have always said Portugal was in the downward trend .The fact is they were!! but not out of the picture.Getting out of the group stage will be the determining factor on our ability to represent Portugal as a World Power in Football. RESPECT FOR ONCE!!
A Great Day

Well done by our boys today. Certainly it could've been 4-0 easily but the finishing is still not there yet. Everybody players, coaches, trainers included worked to achieve the goal of booking our place in south africa. Lusostriker those were some terrific points you made about the current seleccao in comparison with the golden generation. this team need to play their game and as only they can. Always thought the defence was our strong suit. Ferreira when needed played as best as he probably could, good enough. Its a great day today and we as portuguese can celebrate, let out a sigh of relief and focus on wc. Good wishes to everyone back home in Portugal, sao miguel, in the states and hell even the Bosnians just cause im a good sport especially when we prove others wrong.

Wow what a campaign. through all the good games and rough draws and loss, I stood by my team just hoping and waiting for some miracle to happen..Through hardwork, dedication, and passion we made it to the World Cup. Everyone on the team had good and bad moments..but let it soak in...For you come back to Portugal and party..you deserve it..Maybe it was for the best to work so hard to get to the WC.Youre growing as team and thats what you need to compete with the best.CHEMISTRY. I didnt like the coach to much when he was hired...but as we progress I am beginning to like the guy...I am so happy for PORTUGAL and to be 100% PORTUGUESE. Goodbye Bosnia! all the trashtalk for nothing..Portugal clearly showed they were the better team even while playing in the worst condition we still came up on top. Can't wait to be seeded for the WC now..We made it..Time to take our beautiful game to a higher level.Let's show the world what we can do...Forca Portugal. I'm so happy for you guys.

I was very impressed the way our boys played on probably one of the most hoffific pitches ever! They came out and played their hearts out...even after ALL OF THE HOSTILITY they encountered from the Bosnians'. For me Pepe was the best player on the pitch...he was extremely solid in the back and going forward.
At least the Bosnians' can now console themselves by kissing each other on the lips!

Fernando I believe the World Cup Draw will be held in South Africa on December 4, 2009.

Where are all the Bosnians? I have to say that was a very disappointing display by the Bosnian Team. What did they have 2 shoots on net and six/seven yellow cars? Pathetic!

I have to say Paulo Ferreira surprised me today. He played a very, very good game.

We have to be able to score. How do you miss from 6 yards out, Edinho?

I must say, there were dark times upon losing that I really thought that maybe we shouldn't be in the World Cup. Because if we went, we wouldn't represent well. This qualifier season was a very interesting one. I don't want to give credit to the coach, although he did what needed to be done. I want to give credit to the players who carried the same passion that our forefathers carried throughout the years. We are a small nation, but we have done many great things and have contributed in many places and aspects in this world. I'm very proud to be Portuguese, like many of you, and this is the feeling that many of us are. We are proud people and we should be. Now that we have booked a ticket in the WC, we shouldn't stop the fight. In so many games that Portugal played this qualifier, as soon as we scored, that was it. We stood with our hands in our pockets and just waited. Although we didn't play the best football game that we have played in the past, we never stopped. This might not be the golden generation, but this is our new generation. And the players that step onto the pitch in S.Africa must do something great to set themselves apart from the golden generation. We play every game with the passion that has allowed us to acomplish so many great things. In June of 2010, victoria vai ser nossos, forca!

What a relief. Perhaps it feels sweeter having had to work so hard for it. All things considered, it was a strong performance. A few things to pick at, such as the recently typical poor finishing and odd substitutions, but I'll save the complaints for a later day.

Well done and congrats to our boys! Can't wait for the cup to start up!

To all the bosnians who were disrespectful nd had no class...how does it feel?...we were the better side on both games...your field was horrible, your fans were rude and stupid (especially throwing stuff at the referee) and your soccer team wasnt as great as the hype...the only reason im talking junk right now is because i have been holding my tongue these past weeks and watching and listening to all the bosnian fans running havoc...now that we are in the WC..i have my bragging rights and i am letting loose!....lol....forca portugal!!

What a classy performance from the seleccao. They played with their hearts and their brains. All of the players played well. Hats off to ferreira and duda, they played with great passion. I'm glad Meireles scored the goal. He hasn't been the best player so far in the competiotion and he didn't play that well in the first half, but he remained calm and had an excellent first half.

Good luck at the world cup boys!

Your posting is classless! What is your point? I love to post on this site because most of the people have class but you are not intelligent enough to undertand what this site is all about and this is just "sport" and some fun to get away from the day to day troubles we face. You don't qualify to post on a fine site like this. As a proud Portuguese-American I do not identify with you!

This has been the most painfull qualifying campaign. Again Meiriles is not the right person for that position. He scored but how many MISSED shots did he have ! Ferriera did play well, but he is very slow. The finishing overall was poor again, if this does not improve, we will be eliminated in the group stage of WC2010. I feel for Ireland, who just lost, the goal France scored was a hand ball by Thierry Henry. France can only win by cheating !!.

When is the WC draw? I, for one, hope we get England in our group...They will shit their pants. All this talk in the English press about winning the World Cup will quickly end.

As for the game today. Not pretty, but the better and deeper team won (injuries and suspensions were too much for a very good Bosnian squad to overcome). I suppose the Bosnian supporters won't be talking too much trash on this site. Thought that the hosts were not very classy today. FIFA should come down hard on Bosnia.

The important thing is that we qualified despite a difficult qualification!! It has been great sharing all the pain, suffering, rejoicing, and now glory with all of you!!!! I know despite our different opinions there is common ground in our love for the national team!!

We live to see another day and will have time to fix our weaknesses. Best thing to come out of the qualification is our 3 CB trio and this bodes well for us to be competitive at the WC.

A unlikely goal scorer in Meireles and Ferreira played decent (don't get over excited David in the USA). That is sport and why they play -- unlikely heros do emerge on occassion!

Today is a day to celebrate and we'll save the critical analysis for another day!

I truly believe we will ease our way through today and have a contending team for WC next year. The adversity of this qualifying will just unite this team. CQ is actually a way better developer of talent and tactician - prob the one of the top five in the world - plus we have the worlds best striker - it will take alot to stop us. Right and left backs only weak part of the team. Wish we could get the two brazillians from ManUtd - but that cheating. We will qualify because form is fleeting, class is forever.

Whatever you do, Queiroz, don't pull your best performing player first this time, OK?

I really want to get a look at the lineups.

Not crazy about Deco's play for the past while... like to see Tiago or Moutinho in that role.

I though Liedson played very well defensively in the last game.... please start Liedson as I think you won't get that from Almeida.

Raul Meireles to me doesn't fit this team.

Duda isn't that bad as most say, I think he pretty good but does have his bad moments.

Either way today is the day for all of us....... FORCA
Come on Boys !!!!

Play with heart and we will win this today. I think we will be very successful on counter attack as Bosnians are missing top 2 defenders due to yellows. I think we score an early goal and hang on.

Forca Portugal !!!!!!
I can't stand to watch

Carlos Queiroz better get his act together and make some changes in the line up. Duda can't play. He sucks and so does Raul Meireles. Please put on Moutinho and Miguel.
This is it.....

No guts, no glory...... Portugal WILL get the result they need. I'm not sure if they will win this game, but they will go through.

If Portugal do somehow manage to get into the world cup it will be quite an accomplishment, given the unbelievable struggles that we have had to face. There were moments when I thought there was no way in hell that Portugal would be able to qualify and moments when I thought Quieroz was intentionally trying to keep us out of the world cup.
Yet, somehow Portugal have survived and now have a golden opportunity to wrap it all up and punch their ticket to South Africa next summer.

Man oh man, I wish Ronaldo was playing! His counterattacking would be extremely useful in this game.

Prediction: Bosnia 2 - Portugal 1, we go through!!!!

Fight hard Portugal!!!

Forca Portugal!!!! Defense looking good. Midfield pretty good, Striker role...if there is a problem early I say sub for hugo almeida for height and strength. He's getting better that kid. I really believe portugal can take this one home and grab one of those 4 tickets to World Cup 2010. As long as the team stays strong and stays balanced for 90 mins..There should be no reason to lose this one.
