Euro 2012 draw: Portugal face Denmark again

Norway, Cyprus and Iceland make up Group H

euro2012-logo.jpgThe draw for the qualifying phase of Euro 2012 took place this afternoon, and pitted Portugal against a familiar foe. Carlos Queiroz’s men will again face Denmark, who got the better of the Seleccao in the recent World Cup qualifying campaign.

The rest of Group H is made up of Norway, Cyprus and Iceland. Only the winners of each of the nine groups and the best second-placed team will qualify automatically for the championships which are being held in Poland and Ukraine.

The other eight group runners-up will be paired into four play-off matches to determine the final four berths. The qualification matches start in October.

Queiroz satisfied

Carlos Queiroz was satisfied with the outcome of the draw. “It’s a good group for us, with different styles of football. It’s a group that will produce exciting games, and in which we have a good chance,” said the Portugal coach.

“We have to prepare well, as always, but I believe that at the end we will qualify for the finals of the Euro. As we have a five-team group we will also have the opportunity to use some free dates to train and work on our game which is a positive aspect.”

Very good to have the chance to beat Portugal again although we were shocking in World Cup.

If Portugal could throw away a 2-0 lead then.....they can do it again.

I love the Denmark rematch. We where in the process of rebuilding the team under a new coach and they got us with our pants down. This time around I hope Portugal puts on a good show.

I'm glad Portugal's got Denmark again it just makes the group even much more interesting. I truly believe Portugal was unfortunate both meetings and that Portugal is the better team, even though I have criticized Queiroz's call-ups and tactics in the past. Another Scandinavian nation is Norway which we also got to be careful with they were in Netherlands group and and they finished second in their but did not qualify for the World Cup. Iceland & Cyprus might be small but should never be underestimated.
Beat Denmark this time!

I'm happy with the group...I want to say that we will qualify easily, but I said the same thing about Euro 08 and WC 10 qualifying and looked what happened...Also little annoyed we have to play two Scandinavian countries again, especially Denmark...They were a pain in the ass in WC qualifying lol

Rui, I agree that Portugal should not be overconfident but honestly, this is a great draw. The only team that will present a real challenge is Denmark and we should beat them. I know we struggled against them mightily in World Cup qualifying but they are a beatable team. As for the rest of the group, all of these games should be wins for Portugal. Iceland and Norway are stronger than Cyprus but they can't beat Portugal.
With this draw, the only way we miss out on Euro 2012 is if we play absolutely terrible in all aspects of the game. In that case, we wouldn't deserve to be there.

After the brutal world cup draw, this looks very nice!

I like the fact that the seleccao gets another crack at the Danes. Norway could be a dark horse but they haven't qualified for anything in quite some time. All in all it could have been worse draw for us. I would say the Italians in Group C have maybe the toughest group being that they will face 2 world cup qualifiers in Serbia, and Slovenia, and Northern Ireland who just finished outside world cup qualification. Group B is interesting group with Russia, slovakia, Republic Ireland as is Group F with Croatia, Greece, Isreal and Latvia who have been better football countries as of late. All in All in our group we have more than enough talent to win all the qualifying games and finish 1st

Vamos começar a vingança sobre o dinamarquês
Forca Sempre Portugal!!
