Portugal 0-0 Sweden

Despite a decent performance by Portugal the seleccao were unable to make the breakthrough. A goalless draw makes qualification for South Africa even more complicated. Portugal have dropped nine points so far in the qualification phase. It has to be wins all the way for Portugal now if the team are to make it to their sixth successive major championships.

93' Final whistle goes.

92' Ronaldo wins a free-kick near the corner flag. Possibly Portugal's final chance. A flick-on on the near post flies just over Carvalho's head at the far post.

90' Three minutes of stoppage time to be played.

88' It's now the Swedish supporters who are making the most noise. This will be a good result for the Scandinavians.

84' Portugal break to the other end of the pitch and win a dangerous free-kick. Deco's shot goes off the wall for a corner. A short corner is well crossed into the box by Duda and Ronaldo heads over from point-blank range.

83' Danger for portugal as Elmander has space in the box but shoots wide.

80' Sweden make another substitution. Off comes Svenson with Larsson taking his place.

77' Excellent support from the Porto crowd. This is far from over yet.

74' Tremendous effort from Deco who hits a 25-metre shot sweetly but inches past the post.

73' Next it's Ronaldo who fires in a good effort. The Swedish goalkeeper again saves well.

72' Portugal close to scoring! Some great wing play from Ronaldo has the Swedes backpeddling, the ball falls to Deco who shoots for goal, bringing a fine diving save out of Isaksson.

68' The bearded Carlos Queiroz remains calm on the outside but he must be desperate for a goal. Failure to win this match will leave qualification for South Africa looking a distant possibility.

65' On comes Hugo Almeida for Danny. Portugal have twenty-five minutes to score the all important goal.

61' A huge round of applause rings round the Estadio do Dragao as former FC Porto hero Deco enters the fray for Tiago.

58' Meireles fires in a shot from distance that goes over the bar

57' Sweden make their first substitution. Wihelmsson comes on for Holmen.

54' Eduardo turns from villian to hero! The Braga goalkeeper races out to save bravely as Elmander looks certain to score.

53' Great chance spurned by Portugal!! Tiago threads a perfect ball through to Danny who blasts high and wide when he should have done far better.

51' Big scare for Portugal. Eduardo comes charging out of the six-yard box and gets nowhere near the ball. Larsson looks certain to score but Eduardo dives back to collect the ball, as the Swedish stiker is flagged for offside.

50' Portugal continue to hit a brick wall in their attempts to cut through the Sweden defence. Deco and Hugo Almeida start to warm up.

47' Danny has the first chance of the second half, twice getting into shooting positions but twice being crowded out by the Swedish rearguard.

Despite a bright performance from Portugal in the opening 45 minutes, Carlos Queiroz's side have failed to make the breakthrough. The Swedes have been practically inoffensive going forward but have looked solid at the back, with Majstorovic looking especially impressive. Both Portugal full-backs Duda and Bosingwa have supported the attack well, but the Chelsea defender was forced off at the end of the first half through injury.

45' + 1' Half time whistle goes with the scoreline goalless.

44' Big blow for Portugal. Bosingwa, who was having a fine match, appears to pull a muscle and has to be substituted by Rolando.

42' Portugal a whisker away from taking the lead! Magnificent quick passing move involving Meireles and Tiago ends with the Juventus midfielder setting up Simao who volleys just past the post with the goalkeeper beaten.

38' Pepe tries to burst into the box but is stopped by a strong challenge, with the referee waving away muted claims for a foul. The massive Majstorovic has so far been a insurmountable rock at the heart of the Swedish defence.

34' Sweden manage to stem the tide somewhat, but a surging Ronaldo run initiates another wave of attacks from Portugal. But the Scandanavians stand firm. News filters through that Hungary have won in Albania 1-0.

30' Carvalho lends his support to the attack, combining well with Bosingwa and winning a corner which comes to nothing. Bosingwa motors up the wing to win another corner. Portugal are turning the screw.

27' Sweden again cause danger with a free-kick crossed venemously into the box. The big centre-back rises highest and heads just over the bar.

26' Real danger at the other end of the pitch. Elmander seems certain to burst through on goal but Ricardo Carvalho saves the day with a superb saving tackle.

23' Portugal denied by the woodwork!!! Duda swings in a thunderous cross from the left flank and as the desperate Isaksson dives backwards the ball thuds back into play off the post.

20' Portugal come close again. Duda swings in a free-kick and the unmarked Bruno Alves heads towards goal but too close to the keeper. Good pressure from Portugal, with Duda again looking comfortable and confident at this level.

17' Portugal come close to breaking the deadlock twice in quick succession. First Tiago gets a subtle touch on a Bosignwa cross which brings a sharp save out Isaksson, then Ronaldo bursts through on goal and chips just wide from a tight angle.

14' Simao teases his marker and sets up Pepe for a terrific long-range shot that doesn't miss the angle of post of bar by much.

10' Ronaldo gets in on the action. First the winger wins a corner on the right flank, and from the corner kick the Mancheser United man tries his luck but the ball deflects off a defender making it an easy take for the Sweden goalkeeper.

8' Good work from Bosingwa. The Chelsea full-back creates space for himself and shoots for goal but Isaksson collects comfortably. Meanwhile news filters through that Denmark have beaten Malta 3-0 in another Group One match. The Danes will be top of the group tonight no matter what the result here.

5' Spell of pressure from Sweden. A corner is half-cleared and the ball falls at Holmen's feet who fires in a

powerful effort, but the ball flies high and wide.

3' Dangerous cross into the Portugal box. Eduardo comes out to claim the ball confidently.

2' Good spell of quick passing by Portugal ends with a crunching challenge on Pepe, tonight playing as a defensive midfielder. Free-kick to the hosts, which comes to nothing.

The big news is midfield maestro Deco has lost his battle to be fit for the match. As expected Queiroz has kept faith with Duda at left-back after the Malaga man put in such an impressive performance against Finland in Portugal's last match, while Danny, Ronaldo and Simao will be the attacking threesome for the seleccao. Great atmosphere at the packed Estadio do Dragao as the teams get ready to kick off.

Starting line-ups

Bring back Nuno Gomes!
28 Monday, 30 March 2009 15:02
I think that it's need to recall Nuno , he'll bring us goals! He's still the best striker that we have since Fernando Gomes and Futre. Nuno never wate opportunities likes our strikers, and he deserve to be our captain.
This is an embarressment....
27 Monday, 30 March 2009 13:42
When the lineups were announced...I thought this would be Portugals chance to win this important game, Queidoz didn't add Hugo Almedia into the mix, because he is awful...but as the game progressed I could see why that they 'lost" this chance to gain 3 hugh points. Why in the world did Quiedoz put Danny as a striker??? and he also had 4 players stuck in the midfield who werent playmakers such as Deco. And Why didnt he START deco? if he was fit to play instead of bringing him in the latter of the 2nd half. My friends of this website...I believe that Portugals dream of World Cup 2010 is over, sad to say it, but i think it's all over, good bye south Africa, time to prepare for Euro 2010...Ive seen enough of this show, Quiedoz needs to be fired, the whole team needs a makeover, and thats that....well they do others games, but it doesnt matter anyways....its over....thanks for you listening ear....
Bottom line..
26 Sunday, 29 March 2009 13:19
Enough with the blame game, it is time to make some changes for Portugal's best interest. Quieroz should leave or we risk 1993 all over again when we did not qualify for 94 World Cup.

Scolari mentioned he is no longer interested in managing the national team but he should take over for now until we find a permanent manager. We need Liedson, Maniche and Nuno Gomes as the Captain...Cristiano is not Captain material and so far has failed to find the net.
People get a clue
25 Sunday, 29 March 2009 04:10
Blame Queroz for what? The fact that no one on the team can shoot. We need a trainer that will help these players shooting. Eduardo is a joke, almost gave the ball away and never in the right position to make a save. Duda, easily man of the match. Ronaldo is useless and should be on the bench.
ronaldo to blame?
24 Sunday, 29 March 2009 03:42
For the guy who said Ronaldo didn't step up for his coach, are you serious? The fact that you're comparing him to Zidane, Kaka or the Brazilian Ronaldo and not realizing that the supporting cast those guys have/had was/is much better than what Ronaldo has. I mean we STILL do not have a striker and I agree with the other guy who posted saying we simply do not have the quality (although I disagree and still insist the hire was wrong and it should have been someone else). I don't mean to make this a Ronaldo thing, I just don't think that comment was correct. He would have buried that header if he wasn't screened.
Sad Loss
23 Sunday, 29 March 2009 01:02
We Dominated the game and couldn't come up with the win. Instead of subing tiago (who was having a good game) he should have takin Raul Meireles out b/c he was stinking it up. I'm not the craziest fan of Nuno Gomes (even though i'm a benfica fan) but i think if he was in today he wouldn't have blown the opportunity that danny had to score. Hopefully we still make it!
Portugal V Sweden
22 Sunday, 29 March 2009 00:40
For Tony I know that Duda plays for Malaga they are 8th in the Spanish league which compared to Barcelona is nothing and compared to the players Portugal have had in the past, he is not good enough for the job but apart from that just being my opinion I do think that the players are blameless and Quieroz MUST GO NOW, I have followed and supported Portugal for many many years as being Irish you tend to follow a different team
RESIGN NOW!!!
21 Sunday, 29 March 2009 00:13
Quieroz has to resign tonight! If he doesn't the FPF should sack him. The team selection wasnt too bad , but again Quieroz doesnt select ANY strikers. Danny, CR7,or Simao ARE NOT strikers. Ther'e a clear confidence problem as well as Quieroz cant seem to bring the best out of the players.I dont blame the players.
PLEASE PORTUGUES FANS its NOT OVER, if you look at the fixtures left, however we are not going to do this with Quieroz . We have to start winning and winning well.
also i agree with (sockerjo) bring in Liedson, Hulk,..these players have more afliliation to portugal than other brazilians playing for other national teams like croatia or japan.
waiting for 5 years to get natralised in portugal is a joke. its two years here in Australia. If any country has stronger connection to Brazil, its PORTUGAL...FORZA!!
Call up Jose Mourinho or Scolari
20 Sunday, 29 March 2009 00:01
Once again Portugal has many opportunities but cant find the back of the net. The fact that Simao played the entire game and Nani never saw action is absurd. The Almeida substitution was very poor. I cant believe that five games into the qualifiers there is still an inconsistent lineup. Lets get going with the Liedson paperwork because we havent had a good striker since Pauleta. Go offer whatever money it takes to get mourinho because everything he touches turns to gold. Give him whatever he wants with intentions with the squad or pursue Big Phil
The Best Player in The world ? Not playing in he world cup ???
19 Saturday, 28 March 2009 23:42
Wat happened , i mean how can we balme the coach for this one, i mean hes had his Downs i didnt agree with starting Tiago , And Meirles i mean how bad did they play with that performance they should never get called up again .. Deco and maniche def should of strated the game 2 players with experience as soon as deco came in the game changed .. danny should of scored and ronaldo should of scored 3 times in ENGLAND HE WOULD OF HAD A HAT TRICK , i'm tired of defending him at the end of the day if queiroz gets fired its all on Ronaldo he never stepped up for the coach .. this one hurt its gonna be tuff callin him the best player in the world when he cant ecen guide his team to the world cup .. we cant say that about zidane , ronaldo (bra) , kaka . not even Figo Man how much do we miss FIGO !!!!! UGGHHHHHHHHHH
Not Sure Scolari Could Have Made a Difference
18 Saturday, 28 March 2009 23:41
We can agrue about Carlos not being the right coach and getting fired. I really at this point don't care ... the real issue with the team is lack of a striker, a decent defensive mid, our young players underachieving (Moutinho, Nani, etc.) and a quality left back.

Carlos did some innovative things that Scolari would not have tried like putting Duda at LB. We must have short memoires and remember that Scolari didn't like to change things to much and would have stuck with Ferreria as an example and we know how bad Ferreria has been.

It is having the right quality and enough quality to field a team. We don't have it, many of our players play well for clubs because they play with good strikers and are asked to mix in and compliment. Once we ask these players to initiate and play a more dominating role they simply can not. Even CR can be taken out of games as he plays wides and is forced away from the goal. He doesn't touch the ball enough plus when he does there are poor quality crosses or he can't beat the defender with the driblle.

Bottom line is you can blame the coach wish for Scolari but are missing the bigger issue which is lack of quality. How many times did Scolari lament not having a striker?

I'm sorry to see how one fan didn't know who Duda is ... if you would do a little research you will find that Duda has been a force in Spain this year and actually overall did help the team more than hurt as he is a midfielder but is playing LB to help with a position where Portugal has no option.
Portugal still have FIVE games left
17 Saturday, 28 March 2009 23:27
Listen yes i know, a draw wasn't good enough and we should have won but we have 5 games left to sort out this mess. Bring back LFS please, Querioz is only good as a assistant manager.

Please i really want Portugal to be in the World Cup, i'm very upset!
Its Over
16 Saturday, 28 March 2009 23:13
I actually thought portugal would have come through but, again they fail to deliver. They do not deserve to qualify they have and will always be underachievers.Too many pretty passes nobody can finish.Portugal got very lucky Ibrahimovic wasnt playing oh well.
good effort
15 Saturday, 28 March 2009 23:12
I think the effort was there, but I have to question the coaching .. again. As far as I'm concerned, he needs to go. I didn't like the choice from the very beginning, but hoped that he could make a difference. I think his choice of players is terrible and I absolutely agree with someone else who posted stating Scolari would have this team in. Will the Portuguese federation learn from this mistake and hire the right coach regardless of whether he speaks the language? Where was Moutinho and Nani? I understand perhaps Deco wasn't fit to play 90 min, but he should have been brought in at the half. And although Danny did poorly on his opportunity, he was moving around and getting into position. But no, he's taken out and in comes Mr Stiff Almeida. I love this team too much to have to suck this up.

Bottom line is we should never have been in this position to have to win this game, but we were.

Very unhappy dc from Canada
Portugal is Embarrassing
14 Saturday, 28 March 2009 23:10
I have a hard time believing that Queiroz has managed to put Portugal second from the bottom in this weak group.

I can really see the effort he made in making sure he never had a good plan, experimented with the national team every game and seemed to provide no motivation at all. Great job.

I guess the only thing more embarrassing would be to make it to the world cup and lose 9-0 to some team in front of the world.

I'm with Tony, can his ass and get working on 2012.
we need new coach
13 Saturday, 28 March 2009 23:05
it is time to bring in a new coach and rebuild for 2012 we need a striker and playmaker start bringing in more players who are from brasil get them to play for portugal every other team does bring in liedson ,hulk, rafeal and fabio from manu anyone who does not get a chance with any of there former coloiunes bring them in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
portugal vs sweden
12 Saturday, 28 March 2009 23:02
Quieroz should resign tonight he is a pathetic coach he loses everywhere he has ever tried to coach, he lives on the fact he worked well at Manchester United but he has ruined Portugal's chances of qualifying, Scolari would have got them through, even Quieroz sellections are poor where is Nuno Gomes, Fernando Meira, who the hell is Duda, Portugal you need a new coach.
Portugal is Not Good Enough
11 Saturday, 28 March 2009 22:43
Very simple ... after 3 games in a row without scoring, you don't deserve to qualify. I can't blame the coach, he put out a good line up with Duda at LB as an example of his out of box coaching style. The lack of a striker and creative midfield force once again did us in. Players like Simao (not one good cross off a corner) and Mierles (how many poor shots on goal and poor passes) are examples of poor play but who else to you put in.

Time to start thinking about Euro 2012. I think most long time observers saw this coming. Portugal must rebuild the team but where are the quality players?

Portugal vs Sweden

Portugal will win for sure.
The players know the importance of the game
Must Win Game!
7 Saturday, 28 March 2009 00:24
The coaches understand what is expected. The players know what needs to be done.
Winning is the only option!
I just hope we apply pressure right from the beginning and come out with the mentality to put balls in the back of the net.
That's why it is so crucial to have Maniche in the starting lineup. He, along with Nani are not afraid to test the keeper from outside the area.
I really hope they pull this one out, but after some of their recent displays I'm not holding my breath.
Forca Portu-Goal!
Must win game!
6 Friday, 27 March 2009 22:29
I really hope we do this 1!
Portugal
5 Friday, 27 March 2009 21:02
I really don't care about the score as long as we play hard and get all 3 points no matter how we get it im happy.

I think Almeida should start up front and simao and ronaldo on the wings with maniche,Pepe( defensive mid) and deco (moutinho or danny to take his place if he can't play)
Duda as LB with carvalho and alves as CBs bosingwa as RB with Eduardo as GK!!!!

one thing im glad and can relieve us some pressure is Zlatan Ibrahimovic hes gone for the game and were playing in the Dragao probably the biggest and best stadium in Portugal for fan support.

I hope everything goes well for us FORCA!!!!!

We need Cristiano to step up this game .. with all the holes we have on the first team (Goalie,Striker,Left Back) he needs to carry the team .. if it was up to me id play him more in the middle with simao and nani supporting the wings hopefully that will give him more room and keep him away from all the double, triple teams he recieves everytime he plays for Portugal .. i think the X Factor is gona be Eduardo if he has a solid game Portugal have a great chance of winning , and as we all know were in DESPERATE need of a descent Goalie .. FORCA PORTUGAL !!
Winning
3 Friday, 27 March 2009 18:24
Losing is not an option for Portugal, not even a draw. We need all 3 points to gain back our pace into reaching South Africa. Our forms recently have been excellent, but what we lack is the goal that makes the difference in a game. Stars like Ronaldo, Simao, and Deco should give their all into this game and I believe that Ronaldo will surely score. As for the defense, since their start striker is not playing, hopefully Pepe and Carvalho will have a very good time defending. There should be a combination between the midfield and the strikers to create chance for goal. I would prefer Almeida to start the match.
