Carlos Mozer takes over at Naval
Basement dwellers hoping it’s third time lucky
Former Brazil and Benfica centre-back Carlos Mozer has been appointed new Naval coach. The 50-year-old becomes the Figueira da Foz club’s third manager in 2010/11, after the ill-fated and brief tenures of Victor Zvunka and Rogerio Goncalves.
After a successful playing career, Mozer first moved into coaching as an assistant to Jose Mourinho at Benfica. He has since had stints as a head coach in Angola and Morocco.
Mozer is a well-known face in Portugal. As well as two stints in his playing days at Benfica, one of which included a championship triumph (1988/89), Mozer has worked extensively as an expert summariser for Portuguese TV.
His decision to swap the comfort of the commentator’s chair for a place in the dugout is a commendably courageous one.
