Carlos Mozer takes over at Naval

Basement dwellers hoping it’s third time lucky

Carlos MozerFormer Brazil and Benfica centre-back Carlos Mozer has been appointed new Naval coach. The 50-year-old becomes the Figueira da Foz club’s third manager in 2010/11, after the ill-fated and brief tenures of Victor Zvunka and Rogerio Goncalves.

After a successful playing career, Mozer first moved into coaching as an assistant to Jose Mourinho at Benfica. He has since had stints as a head coach in Angola and Morocco.

Mozer is a well-known face in Portugal. As well as two stints in his playing days at Benfica, one of which included a championship triumph (1988/89), Mozer has worked extensively as an expert summariser for Portuguese TV.

His decision to swap the comfort of the commentator’s chair for a place in the dugout is a commendably courageous one.

Naval have had a disastrous season thus far, with a record of one win, two draws and twelve defeats in 15 games. The modest club are rock bottom of the Liga ZON Sagres, needing to make up eight points to get out of the relegation zone.
