Ulisses Morais sacked by Naval

Carlsberg Cup result dictates first casualty of the season

Ulisses MoraisUlisses Morais has become the first top-flight coach to be sacked in the 2009/10 season. The Naval boss was given his marching orders after yesterday’s 1-1 draw at home to Liga Vitalis team Santa Clara in the Carlsberg Cup.

“As much as it pains me, Naval’s interests have to come before all else. I had to do something, because Naval haven’t won for a long time,” said the president of the club, Aprigio Santos.

The draw against Santa Clara was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Santos.

Naval have just one point to show from their first three Liga Sagres matches, having drawn against Olhanense (0-0) and lost to FC Porto (1-3) and Belenenses (0-2).

Fernando Mira takes charge of the team on a caretaker basis until a replacement for Morais is found.

My dad is from Sao Miguel, so I have a place for Santa Clara in my heart and it's nice to see them get a positive result in a cup match like this.
