Guus Hiddink to become Ivory Coast coach for World Cup?
Dutch coach urged by Didier Drogba to take the post
Portugal’s opening opponents in the upcoming World Cup, Ivory Coast, seem set to be led in South Africa by widely respected coach Guus Hiddink. Didier Drogba has made a personal plea to his former Chelsea boss to orchestrate the Elephants’ campaign.
Current Ivory Coast coach, Bosnia-born Frenchman Vahid Halilhodzic, has been under intense pressure to leave the post following the team’s disappointing showing in the recent Cup of African Nations. Indeed, recent reports suggested Belgian manager Erik Gerets turned down an offer to succeed Halilhodzic.
It has now emerged that Hiddink is pondering an offer from Ivory Coast to coach the team in the 2010 World Cup.
“The interest from Ivory Coast is real, but first I have to analyse the situation. I need to solve some matters before making my decision. Drogba asked me in the name of the players to accept the invitation. The Ivorian Federation is also very interested,” Hiddink told Dutch newspaper Telegraaf.
Hiddink has a wealth of coaching experience, both at club and international level, achieving much success, most notably for PSV Eindhoven and South Korea. He is to become the Turkey coach later this year but will only start working in Istanbul after the World Cup.
