Didier Drogba named African Player of the Year

Ivory Coast striker retains “passion and hunger for the game”

Didier DrogbaThere is little doubt about who Portugal’s main threat is in their opening match at the South Africa World Cup. Ivory Coast superstar Didier Drogba has added another personal accolade to his impressive haul of silverware by being named 2009 Player of the Year by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

It is the second time the powerful Chelsea front man has won the prize. He was also distinguished by CAF in 2006.

Drogba was unable to receive the award in person, but in a message on the official Chelsea website he explained that he had no intention of slowing down despite turning 32 this Wednesday.

“I still have the same passion for the game and still feel hungry to chase medals. I feel really good. The few months that I took out last year to get my knee well are now paying off.”

Indeed, Drogba seems to be back to his best form. He has so far netted 25 goals this season. Portugal kick off their World Cup campaign against the Ivory Coast in the first Group G encounter on 15 June.
