I actually agree with Nathan and Xavier.
Please keep in mind that much of my reservation towards any selection of manager or players is due to the complete incompetence of the FPF. They have proven time after time, how poorly a job they've done.
We might all disagree with squad selection and starting eleven, but the fact is that choices might be limited.
I still think that Bento and the FPF need to do a better job of tracking Portuguese abroad. I know there was a documentary that showed how they do just that, but the fact of the matter is that not enough fruits of that labor have come forth. Yes some is players not developing but clearly players have been missed.
I'm hoping that one of the reasons that Bento got the new deal was because of the vision that he put forth for the FPF. Confidence and a plan goes a long way towards possible success.
As for the players themselves, we mostly agree to disagree. Jon and Tiago on the site have come after me for saying Moutinho isn't world class. I too feel hat he's a good, maybe very good, that looks very good or great if players around him play really well. It's very hard for him to get it done verse top notch players. I don't feel that's a knock on Moutinho, and it doesn't mean he shouldn't start.
People still want Varela there while he did nothing this season. Martins and Micael, in my opinion, shouldn't be on the squad either.
As for Carrico, I get the sudden fascination, but he still hasn't gotten full matches at Sporting. There's a huge difference coming into a match and producing and playing a whole match while competing at that same high level. I do feel that he, and other youngsters, warrant a call up for the experience they would get from just being there.
For me, one of the biggest gripes is playing guys away from their natural position. Danny and Oliveira out wide does absolutely nothing for the squad.
As for Mourinho, he's not coming. He himself has stated that it's an old mans job. He's much to young not to be involved in daily club operations, and no club will allow him to do it part-time as some have suggested. Frankly, that option will do the players and country a disservice.
I just hope that we do well. Advancing deep and even winning is the goal, as it always should be. We have talented players that could get it done, so we'll see.
