PortuGOAL podcast: Portugal’s Euro 2012 nightmare and the Vickery verdict on new South Americans in Portugal

Low-down on new faces at FC Porto, Benfica and Sporting

James RodriguezWalterIn a special podcast we welcome renowned BBC journalist and South American football guru Tim Vickery. Tim gives us a fascinating insight into seven newcomers to Portuguese football who will be looking to make a big impact at FC Porto, Benfica and Sporting.

We start the podcast with a look back at a traumatic week for the Seleccao, with two poor results compounding the problems resulting from Queiroz-gate.

Part One:

We dissect Portugal’s 4-4 draw against Cyprus, defeat against Norway and the ongoing problems between Carlos Queiroz and the Federation and ask, “Can the Seleccao still make it to Euro 2012?”

Part Two:

Tim Vickery, South American football expert (BBC World Football Phone-in and BBC blog), gives us the low-down on a clutch of players new to the Liga ZON Sagres: FC Porto’s Otamendi, Walter and James Rodriguez, Benfica’s Gaitan and Jara and Sporting’s Marco Torsiglieri and Tales de Souza.

Very well put Mdot.

Great podcast and great guest.
I would also like to state for those who might not know, on my football droid app, FotMob 4.0, the news link for Portuguese football in Portugoal.net. Well done gentlemen.

FYI, Little Italy in NYC is down to one block. China Town has engulfed that area as well.
It was nice to see a nice Portuguese contingency at Red Bull Stadium in Harrison, NJ, when Sporting played there.

Since CQ is now gone, why wouldn't Zico be considered. We all know the reason is because the FPF wants to have their say and input, when a quality manager won't accept it.
Unless there's a turnover in the FPF, it really won't matter who comes in as manager. Sad really.
Another good one

Thanks again guys for these great pod casts and the website. Even though half of us act like children on here (myself included) it is a blast having an area to debate and discuss all things about Portuguese soccer.

I think that I would echo the comments about Portuguese influence decreasing overseas. Here in Canada (Toronto in my case) the news papers give less coverage to our liga and the national team for the same reasons.

China town is starting to slowing take over little Portugal and Italy sections of the city. There used to be a pub for V. Setubal which has been closed now for a bit but you can still see the old club logo. When I go to the pubs you still Benfica bring in bigger groups, Porto still gets some people out but after that it drops. I've even found Sporting fans are not coming out as much (probably due to such a long period without a liga title).

The positive is that last season we saw a massive jump in interest with the added excitement of Braga and Benfica being neck and neck. I hope Braga beat Porto this weekend (not because I don't like Porto and I know its unlikely) because it will keep the league closer and the idea/dream of having another team fighting for the title that more exciting.

Very interesting podcast and nice to hear Vickery on Portugoal. Congratulations.

About seleccao, I think they can make it, but they need to clean the "house", starting on FPF...

My opinion about south american captures, I don't know so much as Vickery, but he looks right. I expect much from Otamendi on FCPorto as CB and not as RB like on World Cup. From Walter and James, they both look quality signings for the future.
About Benfica's Gaitan, from the few that I've seen, I think will be hard to make the same impact as Di Maria, but maybe it's just the beginning.
Torsiglieri I don't know him and I think Sporting have better options on CB. About Tales de Souza, I've seen some games from brazilian youth squad and he's a pearl that needs some work. I don't know how Braga let him go on pre-season (he made some trainings on Braga squad in Agost).
