PortuGOAL podcast 36: The Andre Villas-Boas bombshell and summer transfer madness

FC Porto, Sporting, Benfica, Braga, Bebe and Nani discussed in depth

Andre Villas-Boas and Pinto da CostaIn a bumper summer podcast we break down the fall-out at the Estadio do Dragao in the wake of Andre Villas-Boas’s decision to leave FC Porto for Chelsea.

We then take a detailed look at the frantic transfer activity involving Sporting, Benfica and Braga, before speculating on the future careers of two Portuguese abroad – Bebe and Nani.

Part One:
On Monday 20 June the news that Andre Villas-Boas was leaving FC Porto after one triumphant season was met initially with incredulity, which soon gave way to a measure of anger in his home city. How will the managerial change affect the Dragons?

We also run the rule over the new man in the hot seat, Vitor Pereira, with the aid of his former goalkeeper at Santa Clara, Matt Jones, as well as discussing how AVB will fare at Stamford Bridge.

Part Two:
Unusually, Sporting have been the big movers in the summer transfer market in Portugal, bringing in an abundance of new players from a multitude of nations. Is the Alvalade club’s shift away from their traditional reliance on Portuguese talent a good move?

Part Three:
Staying in Lisbon, Benfica have also been contracting new players left, right and centre over recent weeks. We pick out some of the acquisitions who could be hitting the headlines in the Liga ZON Sagres in 2011/12.

Part Four:
Can Braga continue to challenge the traditional big three? That’s the question we ponder, as well as looking at the influx of some exciting talent at the AXA Stadium, including a familiar name – Nuno Gomes.

Part Five:
For the second consecutive summer Bebe has found himself a home in radically different surroundings to what he is used to. Is the switch to Istanbul to join Quaresma and the gang at Besiktas a good move for the forward? We also focus on whether or not Nani has a future at Manchester United.

.....
im hoping and thinking benfica and sporting will have a great cahnce at the league next season but one think im liking a lot about benfica is bruno cesar some some videos of him in training and him and aimar link up so well its amazing.Always we are bringing in some Portuguese talent players like david simao nelson oliveira plus miguel rosa im really liking it i think weldon and kardec should be let go nelson oliveira can take a place on the bench and hope to get some game time
Sporting has bought a lot of players this summer but i dont think one has been Portuguese but they really are trying to compete and we all know that to compete you need foreighn talent but i also think their needs to be a perfect mix which i think benfica is trying to do now i definitely want to see benfica keep our talent not to mention should be back from injury soon very excited about that :)

Great listening to guys!... really impressed by your panels insight. Keep it up you and may become legends of Portuguese football...

I wish you had spent a little more time on Benfica but honestly that is not complaint :) Im excited about the signing of Bruno Cesar and the prospect of him combining with Gaitan...Also like Wass, 6year contract I think they handed him is real vote of confidence in his ability. Ben is excited about Enzo Perez not someone I have heard about but in Ben I trust, so excitement all round!

Braga's buying up of players that have performed well in the local league seems like a prudent philosophy... and for Sporting moving away from the Portugal players, I hope it doesnt impair the development of their youth assets.

Cheers!
