PortuGOAL podcast 40: Liga ZON Sagres – taking stock; Euro 2012 crunch time

Exclusive interviews, Liga Orangina and predictions a-plenty

Baba DiawaraIn a jam-packed edition, our latest podcast draws conclusions about the state of play in Portugal’s top two divisions in what looks set to be one of the most exciting domestic seasons for years, before looking ahead to the Seleccao’s decisive Euro 2012 qualifiers against Iceland and Denmark. We also hear exclusively from two goalkeepers: Denmark’s Anders Lindegaard and Atletico’s Caleb.

Part One:
First up we make a vain attempt to justify some pre-season predictions as Vitor delights at making a mockery of Tom and Ben’s supposed in-depth knowledge of Portuguese football. Did we really say that about Rio Ave, Vitoria Guimaraes, Nacional, Pacos, Feirense and Maritimo?

The discussion then moves on to a detailed analysis of FC Porto, Benfica, Sporting and Braga after the opening seven rounds of the 2011/12 season.

Part Two:
Which transfers have proven the best value? Who have been the biggest flops? Who has been the top player so far in Portugal’s top flight? We nominate our choices in each category.

The Liga Orangina (Portugal’s second tier) is again set to make for fascinating viewing throughout the season. The historical Atletico Clube de Portugal are currently top of the pile and we hear from their Australian goalkeeper Caleb. His stellar performances so far (3 goals conceded in 6 games) help explain the Lisbon club’s success and Vitor gives his thoughts on whether we are in the presence of a future star. Ben then gives the low-down on the contenders for promotion.

Part Three:
Portugal’s preparations for their final two Euro 2012 qualifiers have been hit by a spate of untimely injuries. How will it affect Paulo Bento’s men? We also get the thoughts of Manchester United’s Denmark’s goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard on the crucial clash in Copenhagen.
