PortuGOAL podcast 41: Liga race, Bosingwa, Carvalho & Bento, Argentines in Portugal

Your questions answered

Sporting fansThe latest PortuGOAL podcast is a break away from our usual format. After analysing the latest developments in what is turning into a fascinating Liga ZON Sagres title race, we tackle a broad range of questions sent in by listeners/readers. From Sporting’s Andres to that hundred million euro man Hulk, from Bento’s Seleccao bust-ups to Porto’s future coach, from Greek wives to the Argentine invasion, the panel has it covered.
Part One:
Was Sporting’s 6-1 demolition of Gil Vicente further evidence of their championship credentials? Are the still unbeaten Benfica set to reclaim top spot in Portugal? Is the criticism of FC Porto justified, given that the Dragons have not scored this many goals by this stage of the season since the 1950s? Isn’t it about time Braga were viewed as serious title contenders?
Part Two:
In a new feature we give our thoughts on a host of questions covering a wide range of issues linked to Portuguese football. The Seleccao, Portuguese youth, Paulo Bento’s fall-outs, Vitor Pereira’s suitability as Porto coach, the FPF elections and the huge number of Argentine players in Portugal are among the subjects tackled. Thank you for a superb set of questions sent in.

Just wanted to provide you with some constructive feedback / great show. I have a question regarding loans to MLS / I would imagine that it may be in some clubs interest to loan their younger players to the MLS ( image Y Djalo in the mls)

I apologize for not mentioning that it was another great podcast.

I was thrilled to hear you guys mention Wilson Eduardo, Joao Silva, Rudi, etc... as players that should get a look at for the Seleccao. They are playing and playing fairly well. There's no reason not to have them called up for friendlies. Especially if we qualify for the Euro's.
For me Bento will prove to be the wrong choice. Even if we qualify for the Euros, he is not the type of player to nurture and bring newbies along. And we'll need that for the World Cup qualifiers.

It's incredible that people are speaking of Pereira getting fired at Porto. Last time I checked they lead the league. For all the anguish about finishing they still lead the league in scoring as well. Granted Porto will be measured by its Champions League success. The group they're in is much tougher than perceived by people. The eastern block countries are never easier, and the travel involved is a grind.
Since it's Portugal, if he doesn't get past the Group Stage, he's most likely fired. And by that I mean right away. Keep in mind that in that group Europa is not a lock.
If he doesn't win the league title I could see him go as well. Especially if Pedro Emanuel keeps Academica anywhere near contention for Europe.

Can the FPF get any worst than its been? It's hard to imagine, but the clowns involved never cease to amaze.
Having a politician run actually fits the bill.

It seems as if there's a ton, but there's only 13 Argentinians in the league. Granted most look very good.
I think that you hit it on the nose in regards to the Argentinians being cheap. With Brazil's economy booming their players and prospects are becoming more and more costly. I think that will create a trend of more Argentinians being brought in along with players from Uruguay, Paraguay and even from Africa.
Cmon if Duarte Gomes is named the ref

Im not even watching the game. Hes a cretin and Guimaraes fans almost hate him more than Braga. Which reminds me, when Benfica head down to Guimaraes the stadium will be extremely hostile.
How many times do I have to say it.

Bryan, I have actually been accused of being Tom. Which for me it's a great compliment, but I'm sure a great embarrassment and disapointment to Tom. LOL!

Bryan, I've told you a million times. One of the most important things that people should hold dear is their opinions and thoughts. Wrong or right it's what they believe. I would never use more than one name. I admit that long ago I had a diferent moniker/name, but changed it due to creative conflict. And no it wasn't matt...

I for example don't agree with your opinions, but you have every right to them. I just wish you could be more insightful with your opinions in regards to Braga or anyone else for that matter. As for example, karl does a great job in stating his opinions/thoughts, and he's a Braga fan as well.
Saying a team sucks just doesn't cut it. People could have come out and said Benfica sucked in the second half vs Olhanense. but there was more too it than that. The team definately let down and lost their edge.

I want you to know that I truely hope that Duart Gomes does the match vs Braga. That way I can get a good laugh from your angry statements.
Re Matt I only use Bryan/SCB

Always and its all I need. I'm glad your accusing me of using fake accounts though. Now all those people can see just how much of a liar you are. Bubba has already called you out.

Please dont even try to hide it matt or NJ. I find it hard to believe that on some old article one of you comments literally seconds after the other one. Please, you can try to claim its coincidence but the chances of that coincidence happening are slim to none unless your the same person. Good luck explaining that to the public.
Fake Aliases

@ matt/nj/slb, this is the real "Bubba Zanetti", which in case anyone wants or cares to know is the name of a badass character in the first "Mad Max" movie. I love the movie and when I was a kid loved that character and that is why I use it as a moniker.

Anyways, I am not aware of anyone including Bryan using my alias to bash Benfica. If you read my posts you will see that I never attack or disparage other teams. I don't care what Benfica, Porto, Rio Ave or Manchester City and PSG or anyone else in the world does or says. All I care about is that my team, Sporting wins. If anything, I want Benfica and Porto to do well, just not against my team. If someone did use my alias to bash or troll, rest assured, it wasn't me.

Yes Benfica would get a lot more fans in Braga if Braga decided to cash in. Braga no longer need to cash in and the last time they had a sizeable away support was in 2006. I would never go as far to say that Benfica play at home no matter where they go.
We've got Academica and Mariborto think about before we start thinking about Benfica.

Ive said this before and I will say it again. I am Matt, the American Benfica fan from Newark, NJ. I have never ever posted under another name, and take offense that you keep insisting such a thing. You started this BS after I called YOU out, Bryan/SCB for posting under DOZENS of names, including, but not limited to, LHE, lord High Executioner, Bubba Zannetti, Tiga, Roger from Texas, Helmut from Berlin, etc. Any of those ring a bell? I am NOT NJ/USA/SLB. Dont confuse us or accuse us of having multiple accounts. You only do this because both of us call you out directly, by name when you post your ridiculous hater comments: ... Meyong better striker than Cardozo, Luiz another Ramires flop at Chelsea, Nuno Gomes leading the LZS in scoring, Benfica not qualifying for the CL, etc. Remember, I am the one who says Pick a Team, Pick an Identity, Keep it real... NJ/USA/SLB is the one you fight with more often and who comments on the NT articles. As an American, I have no interest in the NT and only post on Benfica articles. I hope this little primer helps you to differentiate between the two Benfica fans from NJ. Please stop accusing me and the other NJ poster of having fake accounts. YOU started all that BS by posting under all those aliases. I have never done such a thing, dont need to.
Thanks again

Another interesting pod cast. I will admit that it looks like the big 3 could be rotating for top spot this season meaning that the match-ups between them will be hugely important. As for the CL Benfica, we win our next game and we're off to the knockout stages with two games still to play. We have a fair shot at fighting for top spot which would be a big statement across Europe that Portuguese clubs are no pushovers. Hopefully the big 3 put on a good show this year in Europe and we can close in on Italy for country rankings.

As for the troll, buddy you need to chill. You came on here trying to talk shit about a team which has scored 8 more goals then your club. You point out to us drawing a weaker team when you drew Rio Ave which is way worse. I could pretend that I care that we top your team every year in the league but that's not even considered an accomplishment for any of the big 3.

Fake accounts?????
A persons name and thoughts are two of the most important things for people to hold dear to them.
I've railed against people that have tried to use my name/moniker.
There's no need to create multiple names for posts. My thoughts are just that, mine. No need to hide.
Let me add that I've admitted when I've been wrong.

By the way its not Benficas fault that Braga and Guimaraes don't want to give us more tickets in order to sell out the venue.

U apologize for not commenting on the podcast. I won't get to hear it until tomorrow.

There were more Benfica fans in Basel than Braga fans in Dublin . There were more Benfica fans in Paris than Porto fans in dublin. Who knows maybe Porto and Braga will play another Europa league final this year...and once again...no one will care.
who wins the league

LOL good one NJ

Maybe you didnt realize but when Benfica travel to Braga or even Guimaraes for that matter Benfica fans only get 2000 seats. A small minority and its going to stay that way.. The remaining seats go to us. Your living in the past. And how about you stop making fake accounts????

I have tried to watch as many benfica games as possible so far and what i can see is that the team heavily relies on a few players in the midfield being Javi, Witsell and Gaitan especially and even Aimar as well plus luisao and arthur at the back. The replacements are good but might take time to gel with team on the field. Whilst Benfica have been poor in some games they have been devastating in others they are the only Portuguese team so far undefeated in both Europe and home in fact they have won all games except 3. Honestly Beira Mar looked the better team on the day. If they play like that they are going to get some good results 7 points does not reflect the team they are. but then again this Benfica team can grind out results and play ugly football and thats why i think they can win this year

Bryan don't forget the 12th man, or according to you it would be the 13th man in the stands.
Where ever we play, it's a home game, even at Braga.

Overrated? Maybe.
There's still a lot of work to do, and a lot to accomplish.
Andre Santos
3 Wednesday, 26 October 2011 18:48
I actually think that Andre Santos is definitely good enough to start for Sporting. I haven't seen such a talented Portuguese midfielder since Rui Costa. He has been utilized as a defensive midifeler and an attacking midfielder this season, but I think that he is at his best as a deep lying playmaker. His composure on the ball is Pirlo-esque and he is very good at passing. Alongside the more defensive Rinaudo, Andre Santos will be able to control the tempo of the game. Stijn Schaars is a solid midfielder, but I think that Santos is more talented. In a couple years he'll be Portugal's best midfielder.
Always an excuse...

How about Benfica's CL peformances? You wanna cry about favoritism in the LZS, which is always an issue, of course. But how about the way Benfica has performed in the CL? whats your excuse there? This is obviously a better team, JJ is utilizing different players and formations. But haters will always find something to whine about...
Benfica is extremely overrated

Benfica has had plenty of help by their "12th player" on the field. First game against Gil Vicente where they tied with an offside goal and the game against Guimaraes where the "Duarte Gomes effect" was on display LOL. Now after that performance against Beira-Mar Im convinced they will drop many points eventually.
