PortuGOAL podcast 42: Euro 2012 here we come!Seleccao master class dissected; Moutinho and Almeida interviews No prizes for guessing what topic dominates the latest PortuGOAL podcast. Portugal booked their place at next summer’s Euro 2012 tournament with a magnificent performance to crush Bosnia-Herzegovina 6-2 at the Estadio da Luz on Tuesday. We hear exclusively from Hugo Almeida and Joao Moutinho. The panel analyses the display, the coach, the players and looks ahead to the possible draw and prospects for the Seleccao. Oh, and we also take a peek at some tasty-looking Liga matches on the horizon.
Part One:
After a performance given by Paulo Bento’s men in Lisbon that will live long in the memory, we discuss, among other topics, the following questions: Is this the best Ronaldo has played in a Portugal shirt? How should we judge the job Paulo Bento has done? Is there any way back for Ricardo Carvalho and Jose Bosingwa? What would be the best draw for Portugal? Are there any positions still up for grabs in the Euro 2012 squad?
We also hear the thoughts of midfielder Joao Moutinho and striker Hugo Almeida after the match.
Part Two:
The resumption of the Liga ZON Sagres sees some huge games, none more so than one of the most eagerly anticipated Lisbon derbies for many a year. With FC Porto hosting Braga on the same weekend we set the scene for what should be two crackers.

the addtional game with bosnia, we knockouted 2012 euro, which is the most excited thing supportin me through all tough work stuff last week. here i got a question to the website manager, may i have the original top pic sent to my mail plz? my mail add: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. thank you very much, hope us go well in 2012 euro!
No matter our opinion, let's just say we agree to disagree.
You guys brought up a great point in regards to Veloso. He played well, and maybe as important, he allowed Moutinho the freedom he's been lacking with Martins.
Excellent point in discussing the combustionable nature of our current back line. Pepe and Alves could go off at any time. Pereira has also proven to be a hot head with the refs. The surprise would if neither of them got suspended due to s red or multiple yellows.
The draw will be interesting. I agree that the Euro's are much tougher from the onset.
The true "Classico". Benfica has to be favored, being at home. At the Luz we don't have to worry about lighting issues. We could also guarantee running water in the locker room.
The Man United match could take a bit off of us, but if are who we think we are, beating Sporting is a must.
As for the Champions League, there's still a lot of work to be done. It could very well come down to the last match for Porto and Benfica.
The best thing that happened to Pereira at Porto was the Int'l break. We'll see if gets it together quickly. If they lose their next CL match, he might not see Christmas.
I think that Jardim has handled himself well at Braga. They have a good team, but they're not a deep team. Braga has been on a very nice run, but their "aldeia" mentality will bring back down to earth. Paciencia saw it and got out of there.
I too would like to extend my prayers to the Martins family. It's got to be an incredible painful sight to see your child suffer. May God bless the.
AVB benched Bosingwa in Chelsea's last match, and they finally had a clean sheet. If AVB has any ideas of maintaining Bosingwa as a starter than he will go the way of Mr. Scolari.
You criticize Bento, who brought our team back from the brink of disaster. He has this team playing some of the most exciting soccer that I have ever seen our team play. (ie spain). Bento did nothing wrong!! Carvahlo who at 34 years old, didn't have the maturity to speak to the coach before a banding ship. Jose Bosingwa, was never a team player! In the game vs Argentina he was not in great form...lucky to even be called up, and thought he should play no matter what. On the other hand you have Bruno Alvis who lost his startinp place for almost a year, and never once complained. You win with team players! What message would Bento send to the Rest of the squad if he brought back these to clowns. If he did that I would have no respect for him as a coach!! Last I was the Biggest Carvahlo, and Bosingwa fan. Often telling my friends that he was the best center back in the world....but i can never condone what they did. Back our players and coaches or go cheer for England. Bento all the way!!!
Now regardind Bosingwa all I heard i PB making accusatioms he now needs to back them up with facts, the fact that I am coach and do what I want doesm't cut it. The player has medical reports to back him up and so far PB only has is own words. PB time to step up to the plate and back up your accusations with facts, your simple accsations are no loger enough or accepted smf if you were wrong be a man and admitted then apologize and let the man play.
There is only one way to address this and that is with the truth!! after all we all want what is better for the country not for PB or RC.
Ricardo Carvalho would not represent the seleccao for much longer, but when he's healthy, he is one of the finest center backs in Europe.
Imagine this situation: Portugal is playing Germany in the final. Germany's most important player is Mesut Ozil and if we shut Ozil out of the game, we could really have a chance of winning. Veloso is an excellent passer of the ball and his anticipation is positioning is quite good. However Veloso, like Sergio Busquets for example, is not a fast, tough tackling holding midfielder.
In order to shut Ozil out of the game, we'd need Pepe to play as a defensive midfielder with Moutinho and Meireles pressing Schweinstiger and Khedira. Now this could work quite well, but we would have a defensive partnership of Rolando and Bruno Alves, and we all know how poor they were against Iceland and Denmark. Ricardo Carvalho's brilliance and expertise will be needed in the final stages of the Euro.
Without him, I fear that we will have trouble against the likes of Spain and Germany.
Carvahlo and Bosingwa are our best CB and RB respectively. There is no doubt about that. Having them, improves our chances.
I am happy that we have Bruno Alves and Joao Pereira as options...but come Bento, say sorry, send flowers, kiss and a make up!!! I want Portugal to win a trophy!
