PortuGOAL podcast 45: Braga in amongst contenders in closest title race in years

Domestic round-up. What next for AVB and Domingos? Seleccao

Andre Villas-BoasDomingos PacienciaIn our latest podcast we try to make sense of the upheaval and mayhem that has characterised Portuguese football since our last show. Are Braga genuine title contenders? Were Sporting right to ditch Domingos? Why did Andre Villas-Boas fail at Chelsea? We discuss these and many more questions.

Part One:

Liga ZON Sagres race. Braga – can they do it? Benfica – they were coasting to title a while ago; what happened? Sporting – Domingos out, Sa Pinto in. What’s that all about then? FC Porto – Disappointing season to be salvaged with yet another championship? European results (note: pod recorded before Sporting’s heroics yesterday).

Part Two:

Why didn’t it work out for Andre Villas-Boas at Chelsea? What’s next on the horizon for two of Portugal’s brightest young – and unemployed – coaches, AVB and Domingos Paciencia? Seleccao – what did we learn from Poland v Portugal?

Ridiculous

The approval for the league to go to 18 teams is ridiculous. Mid and Lower tier clubs are already cash strapped, and this might actually cost them money.
Yes more games means more money via TV and attendance. But it also needs to be split by more teams. Is the revenue going to increase by that much just because of an added few mediocre matches. I don't think so. Outside of the big three and the Minho clubs attendance is horrible.

It's a stupid move made by people that are trying to be bigger than they are.
How many more clubs have to go under?
By the way Spain is actually thinking of downsizing their league.
For all of you that hate the Big 3, this will actually make them stronger.

AVB should be thrilled he got fired. He has cashed in and the players are too blame. He'll be fine.

In Paciencia's case, a bit of the luster has worn off. Lucky for him, Porto might come calling next season.
Porto gets lucky again

Something is got be done it is very obvious where these refs are being bought. Put Pinto da costa in jail what more evidence do you whant. What a crook.
League expansion
2 Saturday, 10 March 2012 23:05
It's great to see the title race go beyond xmas (although I am a Benfiquista and I am on the brink of a nervous breakdown). I think considering this, the expansion of the league is a mistake and will clearly benefit the clubs with better resources ie, the big three. Benfica were brilliant in 09/10 because they were pushed all the way by Braga, and this true once again this season. It's not only Braga, but we've seen competitive performances from Coimbra, Guimaraes and Maritimo. Keep the league small and I'm sure this trend would continue.
Good Stuff!

Really enjoyed the podcast! As was noted, this was made before the Sporting v Man City game. What can be seen now is that yes Sporting had been playing poorly for a while with Domingos before Sa Pinto took over. When Sa Pinto took over initially the gameplay wasn't really much better admittedly, BUT the team was playing with more and more passion and they were getting good results! Within the little time Sa Pinto has had with this team his results have been great (winning and only one loss) and yesterday vs Man City, the team showed incredible heart and played a good all round solid game of football! I'm saying all this because people need to understand that the bad spell started with the slump in Domingos' reign which went on for all of the winter period. Sa Pinto picked things up, put them back together and things have been getting better. He's the perfect man to lead Sporting because of his heart for the club, and his knowledge of all the players and the academy. Consistency, stability, and finances are what is needed in the club, and with Sa Pinto and Godinho the club can build a great legacy and era. This team has loads of talent and depth and with the great positive strong spirit that Sa Pinto has fostered Sporting has a bright present and future!

National team wise, our team has good quality all over. Its a pity that Silvio has been ravaged by injury mostly all season. Thats the one player that I'm personally missing and would love to have in our team. I also think Daniel Carrico should be called up as he would bring good quality in two positions that we could use more depth in - center back, defensive midfield. Veloso, Meireles, and Moutinho are still our staring midfield trio and I'm happy with them. For our strikers, I see the best pecking order as 1.Helder Postiga, 2.Nelson Oliveira, and 3.Hugo Almeida. There's no doubt Postiga is the number 1 striker thats why Bento played him in all the qualifiers and he's done a great job for us, 5 goals in 8 qualifiers and for Portugal he now has a goal to game ratio of almost 1 in 2. Then I have no doubt that Nelson Oliveira should be first off to replace Postiga. Nelson has undoubted quality, and I would be even happier if he started, but I understand that it takes time. Either way with Postiga or Nelson I'm happy.
