PortuGOAL podcast: Braga topple Benfica, Bento on the brink, sackings galore
Di Maria, Hulk and Makukula come under the microscope
The big talking point in our latest podcast is the Braga v Benfica encounter last weekend. Was this monumental match really a Liga Sagres game?
The PortuGOAL panel also run the rule over Sporting’s woes, discuss the sack-happy nature of Portugal’s top-flight clubs and hear about the Portuguese coach at Le Mans who suggested he could be replaced by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Part One: Braga 2-0 Benfica. What is the secret behind’s the success of Domingos Paciencia’s team and how will Benfica react to their first league defeat of the season? We also discuss Sporting’s continuing woes and the development of FC Porto’s now Brazilian international Hulk.
Part Two: A look at Portuguese clubs in Europe, including a review of Benfica’s thorough thumping of Everton at the Estadio da Luz. Are the Eagles paving the way for a huge pay-day through the sale of the brilliant Di Maria?
Part Three: Seven of Portugal’s 16 top-flight clubs had changed their coach by the 8th round of matches. Forget Benfica, Porto, Sporting – it’s at the smaller Portuguese clubs that managers have to work under almost unbearable pressure. Makukula is banging in the goals in Turkey. Will his form earn him a recall into the Portugal squad? And that mad-cap quote from Portuguese coach Paulo Duarte.

Benfica shouldn't take any opponent easy so Benfica's got to go hard again. I don't see Di Maria leaving anytime soon, Di Maria has been pretty good this season and I believe it can get better.
Carlos Queiroz should give Makukula the call-up even though he's not at Benfica. Makukula is scoring goals that's all that matters plus he's the top goalscorer in Turkey. He's causing so much attention and I think it's time to wear our badge.
