PortuGOAL podcast: Portugal at the World Cup – squad & opponents
European action: Arsenal-Porto, Benfica-Marseille, A.Madrid-Sporting
In a bumper podcast today we continue our ongoing debate about which Seleccao players should make that plane bound for South Africa. We also discuss Portugal’s group opponents.
In part two the focus is back on club football, with three mouth-watering European matches involving FC Porto, Benfica and Sporting in prospect. Find out why Marseille are still angry at Benfica two decades on.
Part One: Portugal squad debate. Who could/should/will Carlos Queiroz select in the Seleccao squad for the 2010 World Cup? What about Portugal’s Group G opponents? Andy Brassell shares his views after watching Brazil and the Ivory Coast in action at close quarters and the panel discuss.
Part Two: Can Porto topple Premier League powerhouse Arsenal and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the second successive year? Will Sporting’s recent run of good form stand them in good stead in Spain? And exactly why are Marseille intent on exacting revenge over Benfica twenty years on?

Part Two
I can see Benfica winning well, they have stepped up another level this season and will be sucessfull
Its difficult to predict the Sporting result because Atletico have come into great form, Tiago is a re born player there-in top form, Simao playing geat and Reyes too...it won't be easy. Good luck to Sporting they can do it
Many People seem to think that Porto will sneak it, but in fairness they were lucky in the first game. If Porto play like they did against Sporting last week it will be curtains for them at the emirates. I think its really foolish to under estimate the qaulity of Arsenal.
Porto can score away, but at the same time I can see them trying to protect their lead if they score one goal. Given Arsenals need to attack and weaker defence due to injuries, Porto can catch them on the counter.
Atlatico/ Sporting 0-1
As poor as Sporting has been, Atlatico has been the same way in Spain this season. It will all depend on if Sporting can shut down Simao.
Benfica/ Marseille 3-0
This whole revenge talk could end this round quickly for Marseille. They may come out strong trying to get their pay back and become another team that underestimates Benfica in Europe. At home Benfica give no mercy.
Atlatico 1-Sporting 2
Benfica 2- Marseille 0
Marco, the truth is, it is pretty broken. After having trouble to qualify, we're still lacking intensity in all parts of the field...we always have impressive ball possession, but in the end, our central mids never have what it takes to feed the ball to our attacking players. This has been an issue since the Maniche and Costinha days. I prefer playmaking central mids than defensive-minded players like Mendes.
I respect all that Mendes has done in times of need with PTL, but this is my WC2010 starting lineup:
Eduardo... Duda, Carvalho, Alves, Miguel... Veloso, Moutinho... Nani, Simao, Ronaldo, Liedson.
4-4-1-1 formation with 2 holding midfielders. Ronaldo plays behind Liedson, to his right (same position he plays with Madrid, supporting Higuain)
Part Two: Porto had scored some cheeky goals first leg in Porto but Arsenal also scored a away goal as well so it will be a tricky second leg but so it will be interesting to see.
