PortuGOAL Podcast: Lisbon derby review, Nani and Deco riding high

Interview with Santa Clara’s English goalkeeper, Matt Jones

Pablo AimarIn the latest PortuGOAL.net podcast we take a look back at the big Lisbon derby last week and analyse the super recent form of Nani and Deco, which bodes well for Portugal’s World Cup hopes.

Also listen to an exclusive interview with goalkeeper Matt Jones, the lone Englishman in Portugal’s professional leagues who is on the cusp of making it into the top flight.

Part One: Benfica took a big step towards securing their first championship title since 2005 last week with a 2-0 victory in the Lisbon derby. We look back on the game and ponder on why the Eagles were not able to produce a similarly authoritative performance against Liverpool. Sporting’s search for a new manager, FC Porto’s sub-par season and the football hotbed that is Vitoria de Guimaraes are also discussed.

Part Two: Manchester United may have fallen at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League, but it was not for want of trying by a certain Portuguese winger. We recall Nani’s sensational display against Bayern Munich. Deco’s recent upturn in fortunes is also analysed.

The podcast ends with an exclusive interview with the only English professional footballer plying his trade in Portugal – Matt Jones. The Santa Clara goalkeeper tells us he is confident that the Azorean team can end the season on a high and earn promotion to the top flight.

I expected more conversation on the Liverpool Benfica matchup. I've mentioned the same points Brad and Fresh pointed out. I think Jesus really choked on this one and I wanted to hear everbody elses opinion on it. It was a big mistake by Jesus in a season where there hasn't been many (so far). Great pod though lads. Keep it going!

David Luiz is Benfica's best central defenseman and he leaves Sidnei to mark arguably the best striker in the world and Sidnei ended up making a mistake and Liverpool scored. Oh well, it happens Benfica's got their eye on a double this season and prepare for the Champions League for next season.

The issue wasn't Benfica was tired. The issue was that Jesus COMPLETELY DISMANTLED Benfica's backline. Took David Luiz off of Torres and moves him to LB and puts in SIDNEI to mark Torres. SIDNEI!? hasn't played a game in how long and is utter garbage to begin with. Takes out M.Pereira off of RB, yeah you know the guy that scored twice against Marseille and puts in Amorim, another useless and slow player. So he takes out two of our best defenders/fullbacks in Coentrao and Pereira and totally reshuffles the backline = lose big time. Lost total respect for the Benfica manager after those shananigans. WOW
