Seleccao start with goalless draw

Portugal 0-0 Ivory Coast

Portugal versus Ivory CoastPortugal began their World Cup campaign with a 0-0 draw in a hard-fought match against Ivory Coast in Port Elizabeth this afternoon.

Cristiano Ronaldo thumped a shot against the post in the 10th minute but defences were on top througout and as the African team finished strongly, substitute Drogba fluffed a good chance in the dying moments.

Carlos Queiroz picked an adventurous starting line-up, with Fabio Coentrao and Danny rewarded for their positive displays in the warm-up games by displacing usual starters Duda and Simao Sabrosa respectively.

Woodwork

After a cagey start, Portugal were a whisker away from grabbing the lead in the 10th minute as star man Cristiano Ronaldo produced a neat turn to work himself some space and struck in a tremendous right-footed shot that ricocheted back into play off the post with Ivory Coast goalkeeper Barry well beaten.

The Ivorians came back strongly with Tiene firing a free-kick wide and Tiote then shooting powerfully not too far over the bar. In the 23rd minute Paulo Ferreira made a timely last-ditch tackle as the lively Gervinho threatened to wriggle through on goal.

The promising start to the match soon fizzled out into something of a war of attrition as the rain began to fall. Portugal’s midfielders were struggling to impose themselves, and were outmuscled by their physically superior opponents for the most part.

Anxiety

Excessive nerves also played their part, with Danny, Liedson and Ronaldo full of running but failing to get any incisive combinations going. As in the first half, there was little for either goalkeeper to do after the break.

Eduardo beat out a cross-shot from Gervinho and had little trouble collecting a Kalou daisy-cutter, while at the other end of the pitch Liedson did well to direct a header on target from a Deco cross but Barry was untroubled.

Queiroz tried freshening things up by bringing on Simao and Tiago for Danny and Deco, but neither player changed the pattern of a game that looked destined for a goalless draw long before the final whistle.

There were some worrying moments for Portugal in the final minutes as Ivory Coast worked up a head of steam. In stoppage time Drogba was played through but instead of pulling the trigger the Chelsea striker opted for a cross and the chance was gone.

Edurado unbeaten

Portugal will be disappointed with the performance but are still very much in the hunt for qualification. On the plus side, Portugal’s defence again looked rock solid, and extended a remarkable record of no goals conceded in competitive play to six games.

The Seleccao next play North Korea on 21 June before what promises to be a huge encounter against Brazil four days later. Progress in the competition could well hang on getting something from the game against the five-time World Champions.

Ivory Coast:
Barry, Demel, Kolo Toure, Zokora, Tiene, Eboue (Romaric, 88), Yaya Toure, Tiote, Kalou (Drogba, 66), Gervinho (Keita, 82), Dindane

Portugal
:
Eduardo, Paulo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho, Bruno Alves, Fabio Coentrao, Deco (Tiago, 62), Pedro Mendes, Raul Meireles (Amorim, 85), Cristiano Ronaldo, Liedson, Danny (Simao, 55)

Too Bad , cause we should have won

Subbing Deco in the 60th minute for Tiago? I could understand this move if we were winning, but we were all over I.C. and to lose our main quarterback so early killed our chances of winning.
We had I.C at the ropes , they were cramping and falling down and crying for their mothers , stretchers were coming left and right, and yet Quieroz decided to bring out some defensive players...Too Bad , cause we should have won.
not efficient enough

There are many points to make about this game, one is that Ivorains closed us down well and suprisingly defended wellthroughout the game

we did well with our defending, Bruno Alves was exellent, they had the physical advantage but our boys coped well.

Most importantly besides our defending everything else was not efficient from our passing, crossing and playing balls into the box...wasted opportunities.

Again Queiroz didn't quite get the tatics right, lets hope he does against North Korea and Brasil.

Also many people here are saying why Queresma was not included, in my opinon its his own stupid fault for leaving Porto to go to Chelsea then Inter Milan...why dosen't this guy learn?? he made a bad choice beforeby joining Barcelona so young. If he had stayed put in Portugal he have been in the team and may be as important as Ronaldo.
1st match

Just watched the game for the second time and I have to say that the game wasn't a bad a some suggest. It is true that we lacked rhythm and at times lost physical battles to the Ivorians, but we were also playing against a team that essentially defended in their own half with 11 players behind the ball. There was so much at stake that neither team was willing to fully open up and possibly give up dangerous counter attacks. This result was neither good or bad. We all knew that we were in the so called "group of death" and that it would take 3 games to determine the seedings in this group. Prior to this game some of you were already planning the parade route, now some of the same people are talking like we don't even deserve to be in this tournament. Let's get real and try to stay relaxed and optimistic. Brazil appears to be in the drivers seat, but I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped points to either us or IC. Although unlikely, it is still within the realm of possibilities for Brazil to finish 3rd in this group. I also wouldn't be surprised if N korea steal a point from someone-hopefully not us....Obviously, it will all come down to how we do in our next two matches. The point is there still a lot of shit to go down. This is a complicated group so it is very difficult to predict what will unfold for this group in the next two matches because each team has strengths and weaknesses. The most important thing for Portugal to do is concentrate on getting 3 points vs N korea. The rest is beyond our control at this point. Anyway you look at it we still have a very good chance of progressing to the next round.

Forca!
the issue of quality

Let's try and remember that it is NOBODY'S fault that we don't have that much talent this year. It just happens like that for small countries like Portugal. Hell, we should be thankful that we have players as skillful as Ronaldo, and as tough as Coentrao. Did you see him against the Ivorians today? They must've been twice his size and he never let them get the better of him.

If we know that we don't have the class to go far in this tournament then the least we can do is quit griping and complaining and cheer for our team. Maybe they will play the game of their lives against North Korea and Brazil.....and Spain, if it comes to that.

In short, I'm very disappointed that all anybody can do is focus on the negative. There was a time when Portugal didn't even qualify for the world cup. We just sat at home all summer and watched the big boys play. Remember your roots guys. It's a privilege to have our team in this tournament and we should treat it as such.

They may not have had an answer for the Ivorians defensive/counter-attacking style, but they played hard and wanted to win. Let there be no doubt about that.

FORCA PORTUGAL.
Sad

It was sad to watch.
I know the first game is always difficult, but...
I could understand bringing in Simao for Danny, but Tiago for Deco short after. An attacking mid replaced by a holding one, with plenty of time left.
How about Simao in for Deco and move Danny to the middle and press forward.
And maybe most amazing, Amorin sees the field. How does a guy that supposedly was not good enough for the top 23, enter a game after training with the team for two days. Veloso? Holy Cow there is nobody else.
Trust me I'm a Benfiquista, but I would have prefered to have seen Manuel Fernandes on the squad.
Liedson ineffective, but he stays on, and Ferreira is still bad.
Like I said, sad.
Queiroz

Any one want to advance ? Simple really.

Hang Carlos Queiroz, and the head of the FPF and publically execute them for being recklessly treasonist.

Put our midfield on a plane back to Portugal- then throw them off half way through, perhaps we knock some sense and nationalism in the new team..Afterall, if they're true Portuguese then we shall see our 'Herois do mar' swim their way back to Portugal from Africa..;)

Break Nani's remaining bones, so no PT would ever have the rusty, brazen balls to put a Euro money-note over our Bandeira ever again.

Break the legs of any player who passes ANY ball in backwards own-goal facing fashion. (Yes, that's our MAJOR source of decline BACKWARDS PASSING? REALLY? since when was Portugal ever a nation that passed balls in any direction other than the opponent's goal ?)
I'll tell you. Since Queer-oz took over. Total decline in our football culture. No body is half as pissed off about the score, than the poor performance we've displayed. NO team can outplay Portugal.

Bring back Scholari...and the Seleccao shall live happily ever after.

Back to the good old days of not qualifying for major tournaments
43 Wednesday, 16 June 2010 00:38
Result is not surprising at all. We drew against mediocre teams in qualifying and didn't exactly beat Bosnia convincingly to make it into the World Cup. Our squad is in a state of decline, mainly because our offence looks completely impotent. I hope I'm wrong, but I have a bad feeling now especially after seeing how well North Korea played against Brazil. Going to be tough to make it out of this group.
Ah Portugal
42 Wednesday, 16 June 2010 00:35
Yet again I get excited for a Portugal game to only be disappointed at the final whistle...I was expecting Portugal to put on a good show to prove to all Portuguese that this team can compete for real when it matters, but as has been the case since Carlos Queerioz took over it didn't happen...His game plan today was just awful...I mean did he really want to get a draw that badly in the first game...Our team lacked conviction when we tried to attack...We looked so cautious and scared to break out and attack Ivory Coast...They did a much better job at attacking, but yet again our defence was pin point...Can you guys imagine what this team would be like without our strong defence?...It's sad to say, but B.Alves, R.Carvalho, F.Coentrao, and P.Mendes were our best players today...Thank God they bailed out our poor attack...I mean other than C.Ronaldo hitting the post and Liedson's header our attacking players did absolutely sh*t...Anyways I still and will always have hope we can perform better and make it past the group stages...

Forca Portugal
Not End of World But What Did we Expect?
41 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 22:38
Performance was lackluster but IC posed some physical play difficulties for Portugal, not a good match up for Portugal. What can we take away. This a pattern and after awhile it is what you are.

We can't score or breakdown a defense ... it was difficult with Nani and now more difficult.

This team is limited and is full of average players lacking cutting edge. CR did nothing to show leadership and is taken off the ball too easy.
The only good discovery is that we have a LB in Fabio C.
We will not qualify playing 0-0 games. I could go on but I'm tired of bashing certain players given this team is limited.

We need Pepe and Miguel to start the next game. Also, given the limited options, we must go with Simao in the next game to start ---it won't make a difference. It is a shame to waste a good defense with no offense but this is the current situation and we will see how far it takes us which likely a knock out game with Spain. I am not disappointed due to low expectations and this team is confiming the low expectations.
i agree
40 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 21:49
bluechop i agree i just dont see whats so special about queresma where he deserves a chance he hasnt done anything at inter has he played that good where he can make it to the world cup he hasnt even so in my opinion it is right he isnt there but carlos martins to me would flare up the squad because he has so much passion and shoots the ball from outside of the 18 no one else does deco barely does i think carlos martins would replace nani well and in my opinion is better then miereiles
Quaresma
39 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 21:04
Sorry guys, I don't think Quaresma would add anything to this team at the moment. He has played very little soccer in the last two years. We have all seen the skill he posesses but having played so few minutes the last two years there is no way he is even an option at the moment. He has been horrible at Inter with the support of Mourinho and just hasn't cut it.
Man UP!!
38 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 20:57
Jon in the USA, I agree with you 100%. No service to the wings, and therefore no service to our lone striker. When Liedson did see the ball he was usually surrounded by two or three defenders. That's like throwing a football into triple coverage....makes no sense! Almeida may have been a better option for this game because he is bigger and stronger, but I don't think he would have been much better then Liedson.
Also, we need someone to man up and show some leadership. Ronaldo, god love him, is a baby. Mourinho better straighten him up in Madrid. I can't stand how he cries after each time he gets touched and falls. Get up, win the ball back, and PLAY the game.
I truley hope that I'm wrong, but I don't see great things in our future, even against an over-hyped Brazil.
Ugh

The 1st comment is right. Queresma should be on the team.

SAD
35 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 20:31
portugal played well in the first minute but after ronaldo took that shot we dropped our level down we didnt play good at all i dont understand why the coach doesnt realize that liedson by himself does not work the team is too defensive deco was horrible couldnt make the right passes danny did nothing simao would have been better off starting at least when simao came in we saw him i forgot danny was even playing same with pedro mendes at least ronaldo almost scored but once again he could have done better im dissapointed and north korea wont be ay easier i mean they id pretty good vs brazil i dont like the way the coach thinks or makes the team play the only good outcome of this game was coentrao had a good game and paulo ferriera also i dont see why everyone hates him so much he is slow but he gets the job done and very rarely makes to much mistakes iwould start hugo almeida up top woth liedson ronaldo on the right simao on the left deco as an attacking midfielder of course pepe as the defensive midfielder if he is fit enough and keep the regular back line which creates a 4-4-2 but our coach thinks too much about defense i personally hate him and if we get knocked out i cant wit for him to leave.Ithink we need a coach liek jorge jesus not jorge jesus(benfica need him lol) because coaches like him are not afraid of the player and he makes them work hard in training and will shout at them i guarentee quieroz doesnt ever shout at ronaldo or deco players like that he is too soft we need a rough coach to inspire them and make them play for the fans not the fame
wow
34 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 20:00
the portugal squad needs another impact offensive player, they need ricardo queresma to get ronaldo some goals. why is he not on the team, horrible.
Only Question
33 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 19:28
My only question is, why Ronaldo is Portugal captain? Just for more pressure on him?
Why not natural leaders like Ricardo Carvalho, Bruno Alves, Raul Meireles, Deco or Simão? Before we had Figo, Pauleta, Rui Costa, Fernando Couto, Jorge Costa... natural leaders. Now we have the mediastism as a leader and this don't help the team and Ronaldo himself.

Ivory Cost IS an hard opponent, not an easy team. And from what I watched from Brasil's first 45mn against North Korea, Ivory Cost is the most hard team until, with an inteligent coach. Portugal never was good against very musculated teams on miedfield and defense (like France and Italy also).
I think that Deco was little bit right on his words, but he should had said that inside the group (as a captain, here we are) and not in public. He's and experience and respected voice inside the group and and can found some truth on this words.

It would be fundamental a win against a direct rival, but I believe on this group.
Can't wait next matches and attention to North Korea. Don't ever try to repeat 2002 again!!!!!!!!!!!
No Show
32 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 19:19
the result didn't disappoint me as much as the way Portugal played.... always second to the ball and when they had it, had little room and space to do anything.... aside from the defenders, especially Coentrao, nothing to brag about.... the midfield was non-existant, Deco seemed to be playing on quicksand.... i think Pepe could help the midfield with his attacking style... up front, sorry to disappoint some of you, but Ronaldo was the only menace.... except for a weak header Liedson was invisible.... let's try Almeida next game.... now what it comes down to is who's going to score the most against Korea while conceding the least against Brazil.... and don't expect any favors from the Brazilians....
Disappointed
31 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 18:20
Looked forward to the game and it wah hugely disappointed. Based on what I saw Portugal isn't up to the rough stuff, Ronaldo gets knocked off his game too easily and too quickly, as soon as he got a yellow and was roughed up he was taken out the game, that's the way to defend him and the opposition knows it.I was hoping for something from Danny and was let down, and didn't see enough conviction from a lot of the players. We'll see, but I don't expect much now, Brazil will be out to paste Portugal- former colony issue if you know what I mean.
J-Portugal has it right
30 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 18:11
Geez guys, quit freaking out. A good point has just been made and should be pretty obvious for everyone to see: The Ivorians themselves weren't aggressive either. They waited for us to make passes through the midfield so they could knock us off the ball and take off on the counterattack. At the very least you have to admit that they did not play open. They were fairly closed as well.

Against this type of play, Portugal always struggle, we know that. So, don't all be such freakin' babies and whine about the way we played. Yes, it was disappointing and it will be difficult to get a good result against North Korea if we play like that, but we can still do it. I really don't think there is any one player to be blamed here.

The other side of the coin is that I truly believe this world cup is going to be won defensively, just like the Italians did it in 2006. The world game has changed and is much more tactical and defensive now. Having said that, we will still have to score a goal or two here and there, starting against N. Korea. If we beat them 2-0, I believe we will have a chance because Brazil will likely not have to play as hard against us as they will against the Ivory Coast, which is their next game. They will probably have 6 points and a healthy goal differential by the time they play us and will not require a win to take the group. We'll still have our work cut out for us against their 2nd string but I'm confident that against the Brazilian style of play we can get a draw.

The next match is against North Korea, let's hope that Portugal learn from this game and put it behind them so that they can win and win convincingly.
not that bad
29 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 18:04
Both Portugal and the Ivory Coast were not playing for a win. Both teams were playing with nerves and neither team had confidence. The Ivory Coast midfield made sure that we didn't control possesion, but they didn't really attack. Our midfield isn't that bad on paper, but they just don't click. We really need Pepe because even though he isn't a fantastic passer of the ball, he will win the ball in midfield and up the tempo.

Today we lacked a true ball winner. With Pepe, we will gain possesion and Meireles and Deco will be able to spread the ball out wide. Our defense, other than a few shaky moments from Ferreira, was fantastic. Danny was poor, but we had no service to our wingers. Portugal's biggest strength is in our wings and we need to use them.

Liedson was poor because he had no service and he obviously hates being the lone striker. Both Liedson and Almeida play better in a formation of 2 strikers, but I don't know if we could afford only using 2 center mids.

Lastly, Brazil is over rated. We can not only draw, but even win. I know we didn't play well today, but with Pepe, we are a much better team. Brazil will be more positive in their approach than the Ivory Coast. We are not the team that will dominate possesion in the oppositions half like we used to be. Agaisnt big teams, we are very similar to the Manchester United team of 2007/2008(I wonder why).

Queiroz has turned us into a disciplined counter attacking team just like Manchester United. The combination of Pepe, Carvalho, and Alves is fantastic and Coentrao is extremely impressive as well. We can still play beautiful soccer agasint big teams, but it will be with counter attacks.

We can still do it.

FORCA PORTUGAL!!!!
Poor game
28 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:49
I think almeida should start up front.miguel should start at right back.i think we are strong on the wings with ronaldo/miguel on right and danny/fabio on left and we should be attacking using our wings, which we didnt do today.almeida would be our target man in the middle.in midfield i think we weren't too too bad, deco had an average game but didnt look bad.meireles worked a lot,he broke down countless attacks and had a good performance.should we try veloso instead of mendes if pepe isn't fit?he is strong and i think can perform the holding mid position.but overall, i just think we really have to try get the ball out wide, gettin it into the middle or having players like ronaldo occasionaly cutting into the middle from wide.but hey, a point was better than none and i know we haven't beaten korea, but neither has brazil beaten us, so six more points are still up for grabs, forca portugal!
Coentrão my Man of the Match
27 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:43
Absolutely agreed even before reading anything here: Fábio Coentrão was our best player on the night.
Look ahead
26 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:36
just to point out, in 2004, we lost to Greece (the weakest team), then beat Spain and Russia to top the group. We tied rather than lost against the most unique, unknown, and top class opponents. We beat DPRK, all is well. I foresee us finishing 2nd, facing Spain in next round! not so bad, as the bigger teams open up and allow us to actually play.

Anyone should have noticed that despite our lack of creativity, IC put up a wall for 70 minutes 10 behind the ball which is why we were stifled tactically, CQ did not prepare to play against a IC team that played this way, I didnt expect it at all.

Lets wait and see, one thing is for sure, some re-organizing in the midfield, and new positioning for Ronaldo needs to be done
@ Fresh

" Portugal doesn't have the midfield to support Liedson".

Liedson doesn't move and he is weak. He needs to make runs which he failed to do. You talk about the midfield playing terrible... OF COURSE THEYLL play GARBAGE! with a useless forward in front of them. When Liedson had the ball he couldn't hold it for 5 seconds. He's a female who is too soft for our team. Portugal need a beast. Germany have Klose but we have MAKU ON FORM OMG! . Yet some idiots decided that Maku isn't ready for this challenge and didn't give him a chance because he plays for a small team.
Congrats to the idiots that discriminated against Makukula. Thanks to them we will have a chance at winning the WC.
Coentrao
24 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:34
I agree he played well . I remember seeing him the u20 world cup a few years back and wasn't impressed in the slightest . He's come on a lot since then and was impressive going forward and defending
It's not over, but....
23 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:31
The most disappointing thing was not the result - a draw between the two contenders for second spot isn't bad - but the way they played!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For much of the game it was the Ivorians that looked like what one would have expected of the Tugas. There was no ball control through the mid-field, no speed, no creativity, nothing.

They looked more like the Italians of old (soak up the pressure and play for the tie) than the "Brazilians of Europe"

Then again, maybe a better performance would have been too much to ask of a country of ~11 Million, when 3 of the starting 11 are injured.
Not the worse outcome
22 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:23
Like it or not, this is Portugal's game. They are not an agressive offensive team. They play low scoring, low risk games. Having said that, the midfielders need to step it up. They're the very obvious weak link on this club. Great defense, great winger. But the midfielders tie it all together, and they failed today. Outstanding game by Coentrao (and only 22 yrs old). I have no clue how Portugal will fair against NK & Brazil. It's possible they will play down to the level of NK and get blown out by Portugal.....or I can see them easily beating NK and playing Brazil to a draw. You never know with this team.
3 elements missing
21 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:22
Nani- Who by far is Portugal's hottest player at the moment.

Makukula- Liedson and Almeida don't get the job done. They are like little girls up front. I remember watching the German game and thinking I wish Portugal had a beast up front. Oh wait! I thought. We have makukula but... sh*t liedson ( who has done sh*t all this season) makes the team and Maku ( the hottest portugal striker) is left out. If you score goals you wont make the team. Almeida scored gainst Cameroon twice... He went to the bench.

3) Simao needs to get fit. He's a disaster and I don't give a damn what benfica fans think. Coentrao is valuable but Simao is useless on the pitch. He barely touched the ball at all. Ruben was a plus today too. This isn't the time to be biased. Don't reward those who don't perform... EVEN RONALDO !
I'll take that!
20 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:07
Top Line
A boring game but in a strange way I'm happy with the draw. It was always going to be a difficult and tense game for both teams, as a defeat would have pretty much meant an early exit from the world cup, as I can't see either of these two teams beating Brazil.

Ups
Our defense was solid and Fabio was really impressive, especially with his pace and positioning. You can see that he is definitely turning into a world class left back, which I'm sure he'll be in the next few years.

Downs
Ronaldo still plays like a one-man team and is definitely putting too much pressure on himself, not to mention the fact that he constantly gave the ball away cheaply. He needs to calm down and not think that everything is going against (for example, his reaction after hitting the post!). He needs to have a "glass have full" attitude rather than the "glass half empty" one that he seems to be playing with as this will only unsettle the rest of the team who are already a bag of nerves.

My final thoughts…
Liedson continues to look lost in a Portuguese top, with a lack of movement and the ability to hold the ball up front. Hugo Almeida needs to be given a start in this team, especially as he is probably the one forward that actually has a hint of confidence about him.

So... North Korea will no doubt be a test for us but I feel that we will be good enough to scrape through, which will leave us Brazil and hopefully they should have qualified by then so our only chance is that they rest their 1st eleven and we play out for yet another draw!

Viva Portugal!
point gained or 2 lost
19 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:06
I guess we'll only find out after the 3 games . I think we should have played Alemida as we lacked a physical presence up front as well as Liedison
It was a bit of but the world cup isn't won after the 1st game . I think ( hope) we can grow into this world cup
We can still win the World Cup
18 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 17:05
Maybe we can scrape 2nd place and draw every knockout game 0-0 and win on penalties?

We could be the most boring World Champions ever but hey, we are solid at the back and tactically disciplined so who knows?

Just try not to fall asleep in the process...
We are screwed
17 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:59
I agree with the Midfield disconnection to the forwards. I always said Meireles and Mendes are way too defensive and lack any creativity.

From what I saw today, Thank God for the draw. They had so many more chances and at one point controlled possession and made us look like a weak team.

Ferreira once again played terribly. Its always dangerous when he has or defends the ball. Simao lacks pace but I saw him back tracking today and was much better then Danny.

Ivory Coast set that "Defend our half and counter-attack strategy" and we couldnt respond. Its so sad to see. We needed way better midfield for this WC (Moutinho). 1 real attacking mid = fail.

So how the hell are we going to feed the wingers with this pathetic midfield? We must beat Korea DPR and I mean by 4-5 goals if we want to advance..
was were they?
16 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:59
It was like they were told not to advance on the Ivorians, stay put and defend. There were no scoreing opportunities at all and that is not the same team I saw play against Cameroon or Mozambique, yes they aren't at the same level but you still have passing skills no? Where were they? You still have passion for being first to the ball, where was that? You meet the teams at their level, they allowed the Ivorians to have 3 on 1 coverage but never reciprocated, why? I think Queer'oz's sub where terrible. Saving Pepe for Brazil?
There was no passion that is Portugal. Thats what was missing. Well, I guess money isn't an incentive. How about trying to coach?!!!!!!????!!!!!!!???
Not over yet
15 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:55
Portugal should have had that game but we'll be good. It will likely come down to goal difference. We'll see how Korea shapes up as they can give a draw to any of the 3 big teams in the group. I think we'll have a stronger game with Brazil. Ivory sat back and killed the play, were as Brazil will attack us hard leaving them open to our attack.
who cares
14 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:53
p*** off you liedson hater wow he doesnt sing the national anthem well what about ronaldo huh
and i think people should get over this he is not brazilian crap

Not so fast

I don't understand how everyone can just brush aside North Korea as if we've already put 5 past them. Until we can show a potent attack we should not be looking past anyone. Portugal need to seriously work to come up with something to score against North Korea who will likely play an extremely defensive style. Let's not forget all of our 0-0 draws.

I still believe the Seleçao can do it but I pray they don't go into their next game with that kind of attitude.
Game

Not a good result, they needed a win. I agree the midfield was not good, not sure why DECO was subbed off, he was playing OK. Why did CQ leave Almeida on the bench ?
So mad...

Where to start...

Portugal's midfield is terrible, no chemistry and terrible first touch this is from Danny and the the guys in the middle. Portugal was so slow and predictable with the passing. Portugal doesn't have the midfield to support Liedson I feel sorry for the guy if he doesn't score a goal this tournament I don't blame him.

Paulo Ferreira made me nervous when I saw him in the line-up and nothing has changed because he kept getting burnt by Gervinho.

The positives about Portugal was how well the defense played minus Ferreira. Carvalho, Bruno Alves and Coentrao did their job and if anyone could of changed the game for Portugal it would obviously be Ronaldo's strike at 11 minutes. I was so angry that the referee didn't give Ronaldo the freekick instead of giving him a yellow card it would of been the closest freekick to the net.

I also agree with George there was no reason to give that call the other way.

Portugal needs to score goals against North Korea now I will be satisfied if it's a 3-0 or 2-0 cannot be that bad and hope that Ivory Coast doesn't get any points off Brazil. Portugal has the reputation of starting off slow but hopefully we can finish well.
goal diffrential

i think it will come down 2 goal diffrential. Unfortuently if that is the case i dont like portugual chances. I think we will beat korea barly by 1 goal. Just look at the qulifyings we couldnt beet Malta at home with 10 men. We just cant score.

Midfield!

There's no fluency/rhythm anywhere in our midfield. Between the attack and midfield, the connection was non-existent. If we want to progress which I believe we can, I think Queiroz our "beloved" manager, needs to rethink his tactics as it's just been proven they were useless. Portugal are renowned for their flowing football in the opposition half, today we passed the ball around our defence as if we were just playing from the draw. I've never seen Portugal play like this, and I although I have absolutely no faith in him, I hope Queiroz can sort out our issues before we come up against Brazil, otherwise it's ciao ciao Portugal.
Dismal

I always enjoy watching Portugal in the past they seem to create many chances but no one to finish but the alarming fact is they created very little and the midfield trio looked very poor deco is past his prime meireles and mendes lacks technique and lets not play liedson whos a brazilian and not even singing anthem and seemed to lack commitment
Frustrating

Our midfield is just unable to provide any real service to our wingers/strikers. Deco worked hard, but he lost the ball too frequently and his passing was aimless. Liedson put in another 90 minutes of running without ever seeing the ball....it's tough to watch.

The best player on the pitch was Coentrao, who defended well and linked well with the midfield. Danny was poor and CR didn't look very dangerous other than the cracker off of the post.

What was Querioz thinking with Amorim and Tiago? He clearly was looking for the draw, which is disappointing. How could he not give Almeida a run out there to see if he could poach a winner.

Overall, just a confusing and frustrating performance. Obviously, it's not an ideal result, but if we play well over the next 2, we should be able to get out of the group. They're gonna need to pick it up. FORCA!
horrible coach
5 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:16
im so shocked that queiroz took out Deco for Tiago....Deco was probably one of the few players trying to make something work for our team and he was replaced by a player who didnt even do anything except foul players...Also pedro mendes, danny, and raul miereles played a horrible game..i couldnt stand them all game...and ronaldo almost got a goal but after that effort all he did was dive and cry all game along with everyone else on the team...we lacked strength, confidence, and imagination....the only positive thing i can say about today's game is fabio coentrao played a great game and was the best player portugal had...i pray to the soccer gods that korea gets a draw or a win against brazil 2 give our team a chance 2 advance..i will also be looking forward 2 the ivory coast and brazil game because that game will play a huge factor towards our progression..i am dissapointed but still optimistic...Forca Portugal!!
GOAL NOT COUNTED
4 Tuesday, 15 June 2010 16:14
the goal should have counted, it was a stupid foul call by the ref. portugal performance was not good today. should have kept deco in the whole game and danny.
Just sit back and wait

Why did they play so defensive ... I'm sorry ... I cheer for Ronaldo ... but his diving is so obvious ... Simao should be the captain .. he takes charge when he is on the pitch .... disappointed .. now they probably have to win the last two games ... and the last one is our cousins in Brazil ... not very good prospects....
NOBODY PANIC!!!!

Alright, there it is, we have much work to do! We can still get out of this group guys. I think we have the edge because while Ivory Coast MUST try to get something immediately in the next game vs Brazil, we should win and get our 3 points. Then, by the time we play Brazil, they should have already qualified/won the group so maybe they won't need to go all out against us.

It was a desperately disappointing game of course. Ronaldo was mere inches away from stealing all 3 points with a wonderful strike. Aside from that, it came down to what I've been saying for weeks: our midfield can't provide adequate service to Ronaldo, Danny/Simao, and Liedson. They barely saw the ball and even the greatest players on earth obviously can't score without the ball!!! We'll need better play against North Korea for sure. We need to really go at them hard and get some goals so we'll be sure to have a nice goal differential heading into the Brazil game.

If Ivory Coast manages to draw against Brazil, then we could be in some trouble because that'll mean that Brazil will go all out against us and Ivory Coast will play North Korea and will likely beat them.

It's going to be very tight, that's for sure. The only good news I have with regard to how we played is that many of the top sides haven't faired much better with the exception of the Netherlands and Germany of course.

Keep waving the flag of Portugal! They can still progress out of this group!
awful

That was a depressing and disappointing performance. They played for a tie which will not be smart because now they can't control their destiny.

Queiroz must go, and Jorge Jesus brought in!
