Low-key Portugal beat China

Portugal 2-0 China

Portugal versus China: Ronaldo on the attackIt was a game of two halves in Coimbra as the Seleccao followed up an enterprising first-half display with a disappointing second 45 minutes in a 2-0 victory over a poor China team tonight. Strikers Hugo Almeida and Liedson scored the goals.

Carlos Queiroz explained in the lead-up to this match that China had been chosen as opponents for this friendly in preparation for the challenge posed by North KoreaPortugal’s second Group G match in South Africa. But on this evidence it is difficult to image the Koreans offering such flimsy resistance as the Chinese.

After a quiet opening period to the match Portugal stepped on the gas and scythed through the China back line at will with some excellent wing play and quick combinations, especially involving Ronaldo and Duda on the left wing.

Chances galore

A series of chances came and were not taken advantage of, owing both to poor finishing and some excellent goalkeeping by Zhang Lu. Ronaldo, Nani and Almeida in particular will feel they missed out on a chance of increasing their international goal tally, while Duda sent a free-kick crashing against the bar.

The goal eventually arrived in the 35th minute. Ronaldo had been terrorising the right side of the China defence all night, and the Real Madrid man showed great strength to win an aerial battle on the halfway line before sprinting forward and playing an inch perfect pass between the two retreating defenders to Hugo Almeida who smashed the ball into the net.

Instead of opening the floodgates the goal appeared to take all sense of urgency out of Portugal’s play. Things got worse after a series of half-time substitutions that had the unwanted effect of undoing any semblance of cohesion from the hosts.

Crowd unhappy

The only excitement in a dreary half of football came from the occasional Varela burst, and as China grew in confidence Rolando was somewhat fortunate not to be pulled up for what appeared a foul in the box that should have led to a penalty. The increasingly frustrated crowd let their feelings known about the lacklustre display by booing and whistling the home team.

In the dying seconds Moutinho’s shot on goal was deflected fortuitously into the net by his Sporting team-mate Liedson.

All in all it was a largely forgettable match unless your name was Silvestre Varela or Henrique Hilario, both of whom earned their senior international debuts to take the number of players handed a first cap by Queiroz to a remarkable 16 in less than two years in the post.

Portugal is in trouble. The game against China was worst than their WC qualification effort. The Chinese team was a joke both Portugal still struggled to get it in the net. Portugal is in the hardest group in the WC! How can they expect to get out of that group playing the way they do? I see a real lack of effort in the midfield and this will kill and frustrate the team. If it is not effort then it is talent or fitness they are lacking. The coach will need to fix that ASAP if they are going to do good at the WC.

Actually, I did post again, because I didn't get pwned by anybody. Hey, Angry, Angry, American, you are truly a silly and very upset person, why? why is your heart full of such vitriole and angst? I assume you have Portuguese roots because most people on this sight are Portuguese or of Portuguese descent. I just wanted to let you know, that regardless of your stupid numbers and figures which don't really equate to anything. I just wanted to say, that I live in Portugal, and I am quite comfortable and happy. My quality of live is tremendous, I love my job, my family and I am proud to live where I do. Everyone I know is in the same situation, and as someone who actually LIVES here, I can say that I don't understand what you are talking about. Your numbers about income equality, etc. that you pulled off of wikipedia in a quick moment of internet blogging bravado in order to "pwn" someone with statistics don't mean anything to me because I see good things here. I have friends from Sweden and Holland who moved to Lisbon because they like it better than their own countries. You must see bad things where you live because you clearly feel the need to lash out at Portugal. You shouldn't turn on your roots, if you truly are Portuguese. You just showed your true colors as someone with a lot of rage. Maybe you should consider immersive psychotherapy or maybe medication. There is yet hope for you. If you would like, I can recommend you to a really good psychotherapist I know in Lisbon. She is great, and she also is very prosperous and enjoys living in a sophistcated member of the European Union.

Hello angry american,

You seem to have talent to get your facts wrong. There is 18% unemployment in Spain and not 50%. John is correct about the USA having 50 million people without healthcare - your president has said so many times on television. In response to what has happened in Iceland, this was a result of Icelandic Banks heavy exposure in the American banking system ( fraudulent American banking activity). Furthermore, Americans are the biggest consumers of drugs, and this has contributed the massive drug trade from South American to the USA. I'm very proud to be Spanish, eventhough we have many problems in Spain. It's clear to me you are not really a Portuguese at heart, but a very self-righteous American. I feel sorry for you.

If Madail and Queiroz want to see the fans supporting Portugal at the world cup, they better come up with more exciting strategies for the remaining 3 games... If they want to do what they did with China, make these friendlies a closed door practice and DO NOT televise or sell tickets... People who pay to watch want to see the beautiful game. Not get bored to death... This is not just a chance to "practice" but also a chance to sell the brand...

MADAIL/QUEIROZ: IF YOU WANT FAN SUPPORT, SHOW US WHAT YOU CAN DO. I WOULD NOT GO SEE ANOTHER PORTUGAL CHINA IF YOU PAID ME...

Nuno,

You are a very ignorant american. The only country that is backwards is the USA. Which country has 50 million people without any healthcare coverage? Which country allows their citizens the right to arm themselves for self-defence? Which country was responsible for this world-wide financial meltdown? Which country has the majority of their population grossly obese? Which country has insatiable appetite for drugs and thus is directly responsible for the world-wide drug trade? Which country has inner cities that are plagued with gang violence & drugs? Answer: USA. Portugal is paradise compared to the USA and most of the countries in the world. Nuno do the Portuguese people a favour, stay in the USA for your summer vacation. Moron.

what a bunch of disgraceful fans. Booing your own team when they are winning. You can't win every game 10-0. And once the booing started Portugal lost control of the game. It makes me sick to watch some of these games where the team gets booed (in the league aswell). This does NOTHING to help the team, you are an idiot if you boo your team during a match.

The second half was full of players who have never played together for a consistent amount of time so obviously it is going to take them a while to figure each other out. I do think CQ should be getting his first 11 to play together more often though so that they can gel/get to know each other more before the world cup starts.

Who cares how they played in a scrimmage against China's B team, yes there B team they have clubs competing for Asian Champions League. Anyway this team has too many new faces in vital roles to implement a WC style strategy. I forgot who said it, but the Seleccao and CQ are still ironing out the team that will travel to SA. This isn't about who starts right now it's about who gets on the plane from Lisbon. We can argue all we want about the bench, but in reality we don't even know who thr bench is right now. I like player X and you like player Y not because we're affiliated with with one club or another, but because we have visions of what we think would work best. Hell can't even agree on how many strikers to play with or what formation to implement. My prediction for WC 2010 is based on trends. Portugal in it's limited WC history has either made the semi-final or not made it out of the group stage. So, I guess if we make it out of our group we might have a much brighter future then we currently recognize.

Portuguese political history (modern included) is riddled with corruption...I dont hate portugal in fact i love it i have gone and continue to go every summer but i do not ignore facts just because i dont whant to ruin an ideal i have built up...come up with some facts buddy because Portugal ranks 30(last) in the European Union when it comes to Income Equality and 17th in Human Development(poverty, health, level of edeucation) and 20th in Economic Freedom...Portugal is not in the top 10 in any positive category....i would hardly call that prosperous...i know you wont post again after gettting pwnd so badly but wake up buddy.....

Im a porto fan but I'm not going to be biased against benfica players. i'm being realistic. Why cant anyone talk shit about simao? He played like a pile of shit and lacks in pace. Nuno gomes? are you kidding me? he hasnt seen the soccer pitch since last year. Nuno gomes has given more to the seleccao than simao. I will argue that nuno has served proudly and is a great forward. He is a good forward but hes not in form. Listen i like benfica players i just dont like the ones that are overrated. Coentrao is a hard worker and is versatile(a bonus). Hey quaresma sucks and i am willing to admit it. If we do not think realistically we have no chance of winning. Who really sucks and who works hard?

Heres the catch: Do we want hard-workers or flops? Do we want players in form or out of form? Do we want to be realistic even if it means putting our club's pride on the line? In the seleccaos record who has a good scoring record(postiga sucks in club soccer but in seleccao the guy scores timely goals)?

We do not need to look hard at these questions; the answer is clear. We havent found it and thats the problem. If i criticize "simao" it is not because hes a former benfica its because hes shit on the team. Im sorry benfica fans but he is. Nani makes poor plays but he works the wing.

Varela by far exceeds simao is pace, work ethic, and determination. He is not as skilled as simao or a good leader like simao. Listen closely. Hes not as SKILLED AS SIMAO. But what simao lacks VARELA HAS which is PACE.

Moutinho is talented guys. He is a leader too and we cant forget it. He hasnt blended in yet but he will.

Speaking of benfica? We lack goals do we not? Bring in Makukula please. This guy has a great record on the seleccao 1 game and 1 goal. Guys listen Makukula is not talented but hes strong and he finally is building confidence. As a forward STRENGTH AND CONFIDENCE is needed. Liedson and almeida are too weak. Bring in MR.GOAL for one friendly.

Give maku a shot Queer-eyes!

Ruben Micael is needed... do i even need to argue this? Look at the midfield.
Observations

Nuno/Portugal
After reading posts from a lot of people on this site, I have come up with several observations. I will list them: 1. Please correct me if I am wrong, I don't mean to upset anyone, but I feel that many posters here are from Canada and I beleive they are offspring of working class immigrants who left Portugal when the country was suffering from the effects of fascism and war, so these children born oversees have a very incorrect and negative view of Portugal which was provided to them from their parents. It is embarrasing. Portugal is a modern, sophisticated, prosperous and positive member of the European Union, not the stubborn Imperialist country that your Benfica loving parents left. 2. Most people don't have a clue about football. Why are people complaining? We won a friendly where the coach is correctly trying out different players and tactics, what is wrong with that? I don't beleive Portugal was even going 40%, there was no need to. This was an observation game. Why are people going crazy over this? 3. My final observation is that people need to relax and enjoy the ride, the Federation, coach and team will do whatever they can to ensure that Portugal performs the best that they can and that they go as far as they can in this tournament.

Oh man this was as boring as it gets to watch a fuetbol game..the first half was decent, I was intrigued to see how both teams started off. The second Id rather have wash the dishes than have watched that mess. It was very boring, lacked excitment, and flair. They should of have put up 5-6 goals and only get one??..yea I know they scored two, but the second was a lucky deflection. Im surprised Veloso didnt play, was he injured?. Quiedoz better get his head out of the sand and stick with a good lineup?..why in heavens name is Hugo starting??. We have to plan now a SET lineup, not change everything, every game...and someone tell Nani to shoot it LOOOOOOWWWW...overall, what a boring performance..

Oliver and co. need to quit talking sh*t about current or former benfica players. Simao should be captain because not only does he play like a leader but he shows great sportsmanship. I like Ronaldo but he seems to whine about alot of calls. Life isnt fair and some things you just need to let go. And if Varela is taking a place in starting XI, He is competing with nani. Simao is an automatic starter. Also, Nuno Gomes should play sub-striker to Liedson. He is a better finisher compared to Almeida. Left back will be our weakness for the world cup. Paulo Ferreira or Bosingwa should take left with Miguel on the right side. Alves, Carvalho middle.
Now that's how it's done

Read all the comments. Agree with Dan B. Appreciate the passion, but some must put this game into perspective. This is a friendly played in March at the same time that domestic leagues are approaching the final stretch, League Cups are comming to an end, the Champions League and Eufa and are down to the best teams. The top players have played alot of football. These guys are not machines and you have to be smart about you approach this match. Carvalho pulled out because he is streched physically. Do we want another Pepe situation on our hands so that we can say we dominated China in March? These games should be used as a testing ground for assessing players abilities and implementing basic team tactics. Obviously, it would have been nice to thump China 10-0, but lets get real, the only game that really matters between now and June is the first World Cup match vs. Ivory Coast (Don't put too much into their loss vs S Korea, they will be formidable). With that said, I do think that the match vs Ghana will be useful as it pits Portugal against a strong African nation that will also be looking to peak in the weeks leading up to the World Cup.

Coaching

Romeu, USA, MA
I'm not saying they should change the coach because that would hurt the team right now but Quiroz is afraid of the politics in Portugal and shows no emotions of the sidelines. Scolari didn't didn't give a F*** about what anyone else thought he had his guys that always played together, Scolari was like a 12th man on the field showing emotion not afraid to yell at his players and call them out if they weren't doing something he liked.

I truly feel Quiroz is a stepping stone until Jose Mourinho becomes coach. There might even have to be someone after Quiroz until Mourinho is coach. Mourinho is the right coach because he is use to dealing with big personality, high expectations and everything that comes with being a coach for Portugal.

One thing I did see yesterday that I liked was CR7 directing players on the field waving them over on a throw in and acting like a captain. CR7, Simao, Carvalho, B. Avles and Pepe (if healthy) all stepping up their leadership and intensity if this team in going deep into this WC. Because i dont feel like Quiroz has it in him to do it.

Just my thoughts.

Nani was not good and whoever thought he was should provide an example of some end product. for all the talent we supposedly have on the wings we are not showing it. Varela, Coentrao, Nani are all talented but i don't think any of them has Figo, Ronaldo or even Quaresma's ability/potential unfortunately the problem is he has no confidence and no match time otherwise he would of lifted that game a bit, which was awful. Simao and Ronaldo will will have to carry us through in attack and Miguel Veloso needs a spot in this team now. hopefully with Pepe, Bosingwa, Carvalho to return we will become strong enough for world cup to at least make 2nd round. Almeida may as well stay up front as there is no better option but we need the wingers and attack midfielders to get closer to him so we can use more combination play in the final third and let the full backs provide the width. this is the only way we can have success as we don't have a proper 2nd striker good enough and shouldn't move the better players out of position therefor we cannot play 4-4-2 so in that respect i agree with the guy from Trinidad as keeping our wide men out on the flanks means we will just crosses in with only one decent target.

Yes, the team played very poorly and that's a fact. I could go round calling names and taking numbers as some previous posters (and rightly so) but I wanna talk about the crowd. WTF!!!! You don't do that. You, just don't do that.

Lots of complaints about CQ trying too many players. I don't have a problem with it because it just confirms many of the players are not that good or ready. If CQ settled on a first 11 and gave no chance to other players. People would complain that new players don't get a chance. You might as well find out what tools you have available for the job. We have a flawed team and it is what it is. It will not change in 90 days and we go to the WC with this team and low expectations.

1) As much Duda is deplorable not because he is not a LB but because his passing is bad. We are likely stuck with him. Veloso is an option but I don't think LB will work. Is there better options -- I doubt it.

2) Mendes for being a great professional is not a national team player. He is a nice journeyman, I wish the lost feast for him would end.
3) Moutinho, enough said ... he is more of a leader than a player. I wish he was both and a player first.
4) Meireles -- wasteful but he is an energy guy who runs and provides cover. He will be in the starting 11 ... do we have someone better? Probably in potentail but one is stepping up.
5) Tiago, solid player but not great ... but do we have anyone better?
6) Paulo F - what can you say ... nice locker room guy and there are not too many options. He is likely on the squad but won't start. Things are bad when he is a better LB option the Duda.

I think Varela, Micael, and Veloso have spots on this team and I hope they make the squad but don't expect to see too many suprises on this team.

Bottom line is that this Portugal is not a #5 in the world and I have low expectations in the WC. I think the future looks better for 2012.
not too bad

COME ON GUYS!
LET'S SEE THAT WE HAD SOME POSITIVE POINTS OUT OF THIS MATCH:
1- we have seen for the first time 2 wingers(Nani and Simao) and a second striker(Ronado) playing together with another center forward(Almeida)...It's true we're still missing the final touch! But the first half was a perfect one!

2-Varela took his chance and imagine what he can do while playing with nani and ronaldo

3- We were sure yesterday that our second match against North Korea will get us an easy 3 points and at least 3 goals scored!Since the team that played in the second half did not include any of our keys such as Ronaldo and Simao! And even they were not willing to score! They were there just to prove that they can possess the ball!

4- Don't forget that 3 major players were missed: Deco Bosingwa and Pepe...And even the clear substitute of Deco who is supposed to be Ruben Micael was not there at all!

So come on guys, let us be optimistic and hope to make it, don't forget that the Ivorians lost against South Korea, which is a bit better than N.Korea, and Italy did not have the chance to score, Germany lost, France Lost...So we were among the best in these Friendly games! And don't forget that the U-23 team scored 7 goals against Wales!

Come on guys, this game was to look at a lot of faces. It's beginning of March. The real preparation match is the one vs Cameroon.........The starting 11 is already set. It's Eduardo, Duda, Carvalho, Alves, Bosingwa, Mendes (or Pepe), Meireles, Deco, Simao, Liedson & Ronaldo. In the second half you sub Nani for Simao & you bring in Almeida for Liedson. The idea being that the defense has been run ragged by Liedson for 75-80 minutes & will now have to contend with the 6'4" 220lb Almeida............who is strong & has surprising speed. Check out the run up to the 1st goal or the last goal against the Czech Republic in Euro2008 if you think I'm full of sh*t about the speed. And if Deco is tired in the 2nd half you bring in Tiago. See, not that complicated.

I agree that changing the dam squad at this time is bull. You should have a set 11 at this point and just working on the subs. I watched the highlights and looks like they had bad luck with the poll but the second goal was just lucky. Seeing that ivory coast lost today gives be the believe that we will make it out of the group stage. But for the first time in a few years I feel like this team is not champions material. We'll see what happens.

The worst thing for me was in the second half when Paulo Ferreira was given the captain's armband. For me ALL Portuguese fans should get together and prey that Ferreira and Duda get injured bad enough so Querioz has no choice but to leave them out of the WC squad cuz only god can save us from Querioz.

In addition to that for all the great thing we hear about Queiroz being a super smart coach we are not seeing it for games, cuz look his only tactic for us is run down the wing and cross this is 1990 style tactics every coach knows how to organize their defense for this.

Portugal needs to be more direct at times.. or maybe he plans to try this at the WC.

For me after this game - Duda, Ferreira and Mendes should all be 'Left Back' from the WC squad.
could have been better

One of the least appealing games I've seen in a while. I was hoping for something better, but...

Queiroz did what he needed to here. The point of this game was not to blow China out of the water. The first half showed that we can do that. Instead, the game was to give a variety of players the chance to work together in the national team so that they can continue to learn each other's habits and, more importantly, for Queiroz to assess his options. We're not talking about starting eleven. We're talking about the maybes, the bench. Obviously Ronaldo and Simão and Nani and Carvalho and Alves and... will all be there. But who should be the third goalie? What position should Ferreira fill, if any? Can Rolando keep up with the big boys? Who fills Pepe's place if he doesn't recover? Is Tiago or Mourinho more reliable? These are the types of questions that Queiroz is trying to answer - as he should. He only called up 18 players for the game, intending to use every one of them. In other words, he knew ahead of time exactly who he would substitute, not because the game needed it, but because he's doing his research well.

That being said, the second half was a major disappointment. The cast of characters from Sporting did about as well against China as they have in the Liga this season - dismally. Let's be thankful that's not our first string!
portugal has no chance

simao is a disaster and so is almeida. They suck big balls. Varela is better than simao and he certainly proved it today. Simao started the match and didnt do anything right. Almeida is decent but not a superstar.
dissapointing

Portugal did dominate the game throughout the first half, but again their finishing was poor...NANI!!! China were extremely poor, they make liechtenstein look good. In my opinion it could have been 3 or 4-0 at half time. In the second half, all the players seemed like they were looking forward to the ride back to their clubs, because they really won't trying. I don't think that they were awful, but just disrespectful to the fans who came to see an entertaining thrashing.

The second half was like watching paint dry. Youre playing against CHINA! ATTACK. Passing the ball around, waisting time just pisses off everybody. The worst team in the liga sagres could hammer this Chinese side. If they continued with the strenght they had in the first half they could of racked up 5,6, maybe 7 goals. I was not that upset to see Queiroz take out Ronaldo, Simao etc. I fully expected the subs to come in and work their asses off to earn a place in the seleccao, but come on. At first I thought Varela was going to add some intensity, but he lossed the ball to often and wasted a scoring oppertunity with a shot that might have reached the estadio do dragao.

There is no excuse to just call it quits after scoring the first goal. Stop experimenting! We need a solid team that can rack up goals. I am still confident that we can beat the koreans, but I fear that unless we put the ball in the back of the net it could be another nail bitting 1-0 win where we take 50 shots and only 1 goes in. Good news is that the mighty elephants of the Ivory Coast were embarrassed by the south koreans 2-0 and that Brazil were far from impressive in their 2-0 win over ireland.
What a disgrace of a performance

Carlos Quiroz needs to go...simply put. With him at the helm, we have no chance what so ever.
Not surprised

C'mon people we didn't expect this! Meireles, Moutinho, and Mendes have never played together as a unit. Yes they are pros but it takes time to make a special team and I don't see that right now with Portugal.

Does anybody know if this is the last friendly before the Copa?

I was happy to see Ronaldo, Nani, and Simao all on the pitch at the same time and I think it could help us come this June especially now that Varela could come off the bench. Other than this and the terrific chances that were created, but again cant quite finish.(Could of been 3-0 at half) that was that. 2nd Half subs just couldn't find rythm, too many times where the Chinse running free down the wings. Now the comparison the Chinease are like N. Koera well I myself can only go by what some of you guys say. This is only 2nd time I saw Chinease and Ive never seen N. Korea. I understand that N. koreans will try and out run you for 90 mins and that they might park the bus and then counter attack quickly. I think for the most part Queiroz knows who will be in starting 11. Remember no Bosingwa, Pepe, Deco, Carvalho. Rolando will not be in starting 11, unfortunately expect Duda there as our LB. Although he has been there throughout all qualifying and is most familiar with Carvalho, and Alves, Pepe, Bosingwa. If same group of guys would of played a bit more in 2nd half I think the 1st half performanced would of carried over.

Varela was okay, like Tom K. said he had some good runs instantly when he entered but he did lose the ball a couple times but not bad.

If most of you guys thought The China Friendly was a head scratcher of an oppenent then you might not be too pleased with the game in May and 2 in June. (This is all via Espn.com World Cup Section)
May 24- Cape Verde
June 1st( Good test)- Cameroon-Good test against team with another great striker in that of Eto ie like Droba for Ivory Coast. Bassong out Of Tottenham for Cameroon not too bad either.
June 8th- Mozambique- I like the 2 last friendlies they way they set up in that they are 2 African teams so we should be fready for the Ivorians on the 15th. Mozambique obviuosly lesser team but dont want to play a tough oppenent 1 week prioer to playing an already tough match with Ivorians.

Mantenha os amigos de fé como nós começamos mais perto da Copa do Mundo, estaremos prontos
What a joke

This game was not taken seriously and played out as a joke. I saw Paulo Ferreira somehow trick out the chinese defender then tried to fancy dribble his way into space. Very random. and Hilario dribbling the Chinese striker out of his own box. Such foolishness. Hugo Almeida was wasteful all night. The combo of Meireles, Moutinho, Mendes did a horrific job holding midfield in the 2nd half. Duda failing to make a complete pass. Raul Meireles hitting the post for the 94,636,248th time. But not to make it sound so depressing.. I think C.Ronaldo, Simao, Nani played good games. Varela was brilliant and same with Miguel. Liedson was working hard and trying to get the team going. The lack of finishing was the frusteration.

I'm very disappointed with Portugals performance today. I expected much more from then especially in the second half. Why does this coach that is and idiot, not have a firm starting 11. He keeps changing and bringing in plays that are useless. Duda does not have a place in the Portugal squad at left back he is shocking and at as a left midfielder we have Veloso that is 250times better. Rolondo looks like a lost soul, no place for him. These games are not to look for new players but to establish and develop the starting 11 for the world cup in 99days so please Carlos Quiroz stop screwing around, you making us look bad.
