Players win that stick together like Spanish team

It's about time to start team cohesion, deal with poor finishing problems and solution for defenders since Bosingwa, Pepe and Deco might not make it due to injuries. Cameroon will be the best team to play at par with the Ivorians but Cap Verde and Mozambique??? Forget it!!!
Makukula please

All this team needs is a good forward. Our defense is experienced and quick with the likes of Carvalho and Pepe(If he gets back). I would play Pepe if hes available as a CB next to Carvalho at the center next to a young Coentrao at RB and Miguel in LB. Miguel is experienced but not all together great. Speed is important on the right flank for alot of teams attackers and Coentrao has plenty. Pepe is good in Midfield but hes better as a defender. They all played, except for Coentrao, against world class forwards and attackers so they would hold up amazingly. Midfield we are an amazing team with the likes of Ruben as a great new up and coming playmaker as well as Carlos Martins who has had a wonderful season thus far off the bench and Meireles. Deco still has to still be there for experience. In the wings we got Ronaldo of course and Simao. Experience in numbers and skill to trouble any team. As subs to those positions we got Nani who can start for Simao and vice versa. Also Varela is doing great and did good against China. Many of these players, like Ruben and Carlos Martins arent well known by many defenders on international teams since they still play in Portugal which can be good for us. In forward though I EASILY give it to Makukula. Hes on nooo ones radar and is deadly this year. Unlike Liedson who is too little too late as hes had his worst season in years. And hes scored for Portugal yes, but luckily. Makukula is tall and great heading which is perfect to receive lobs into the box from beautiful crosses from Simao, Ronaldo, or Nani. Why get a short forward like Liedson to latch onto those kind of passes. Hes so far only played against weak international teams. He will get out jumped and out ran by defenders like the Brazilian team has and like the Ivory Coast has. Also Quim is the best goalkeeper in all of Europe apparently according to Prime Time Sports. Eduardo has never faced anything like Drogba or Luis Fabiano. He wont know what to do with himself. Quim is old but young but goalkeeping standards.
so my team is

Quim
Miguel Carvalho Pepe Coentrao
Carlos Martins
Ruben Deco
Ronaldo Simao
Makukula

sorry for long winded comment
Midfield

I'm pretty sure Maka is reference to Makukula because he is in good form playing in Turkey right now. I feel to have any chance in the midfield, Portugal has to play a tall, athletic group that can make up for the lack of height in the forward position (Simao, Liedson). If Pepe cannot make it to WC, Miguel Veloso or even Pele should play Defensive Midfield, with Raul Meireles and Ruben Micael in the midfield/Attack roles.

Eduardo
Miguel, Carvalho, Alves, Veloso
Ruben, Pele, Meireles
Ronaldo, Liedson, Simao,
Quaresma( goal scoring and more)

We need the talent of Quaresma back into our squad, Yes he play's to much with the ball... but he is effective and creats chances.. thats what we need. our GF is extremly low, especialy with Ronaldo Simao Liedson involved... we need to up our goal scoring...
\
It is going to be difficult with out the likes of Bosigwa and maybe Pepe. But we can pull through.. im sure of it, we need to play beautiful football, passing and taking of chances.

and with Ronaldo on a high, playing with the team( not just himself). and somewhat stopping his skills to be a more team player, Portugal have a decent chance of making it to the knockout.. and hopefully further.!!!

Just because Bosingwa is out doesnt mean our hopes to do anything in World Cup are over...Yes it's a blow but how long have we had someone else in his place doing just fine. It'll be ok.. Pepe I pray gets fit in time..If not it's another hit but again...we have a good backup..Not as great in the air but not bad. We'll be ok..CQ just better get his mind right and make a great starting 11 and stick with it..It gets frustrating how many times the roster gets changed around..Talks about Quaresma....hm knowing he hasnt been playing much at all for Inter you would suggest that he shouldn't be in the team..But I think tho getting no play he is a really good midfield player and could be nice to have a quality backup for a starter..hes quick...flashy moves at times...can score when gets the chance....He's really not all that bad..I wish Nuno Gomes would play more for Benfica so he could get one last call to the team..Doesn't look like that'll be happeneing. He had a good run and scored some awsome goals for Portugal and Benfica though being in the shadow of Pauletta most of his career. Some people on here have been putting in some really good starting 11 ideas. I hate that we are playing friendlies against weaker teams...We need to test in bigger team matches to have that experience heading into the World Cup.This happens every time a tournament comes along..Only hope for the best..World Cup is quickly approaching..If the roster is fixed right and we have a strong team out on the pitch I believe we can win our group and take out some huge teams along the way...I really think Portugal have a chance to make it all the way..A lot of great individuals on this team...We play right with eachother we won't be stopped. It's Possible...Forca Portugal!!!
Bosingwa

Without Bosingwa our chances of doing anything significant in the WC are over. If Miguel was playing like he played in 2004 i wouldn't be worried at all... but this is not the case.

Can't believe he's out...

what is the latest update on Danny, this guy is pure class. If healthy and fit, I believe he should be on the team, not as a starter but as an impact sub.

I just read that Bosingwa will require another surgery and will and will not be able to return in time for the world cup. Miguel has experience and always plays well for the seleccao.
2 questions

Monah.Lebanon
In general I have 2 points:
1- Why don't we always play with 2 free forwards and 2 wingers, I mean why Almeida and Liedson can't be present both on the pitch!!!Against China, we had this formation, where Nani and Simao played on the wings, Ronaldo in front of Simao and Almeida as free forward.

2- Why nobody is talking about YANNICK DJALO and BRUNO GAMA! They're among the best and can be great sustitutes!?

I'm pretty sure queros has given up on portugal beating brazil... he chose to play china to get prepared for north korea he is now choosing Cap Verde,Cameroon & Mozambique to get prepared for ivory coast no south american teams for us to practice on

Leadership the Main Problem?
20 Friday, 05 March 2010 04:14
Dan/USA
The players seem unmotived and don't give it their all and all that has to come down on themselves and the manager...While Queiroz seems to be the person that we all put the blame on, I think the other main problem is the lack the of leadership and discipline we have in the squad...Notice how the last player, Figo, brought all that and we played some amazing games against some tough teams and nearly won a Euro and World Cup...After he left the national team for good our team hasn't been the same...We need a player like Figo who can motivate each player on the field and pick their heads up when things aren't going well...We aren't going to get that with Ronaldo...What do you guys think?...

PS thanks for everything you do for the site and Forca Portugoal!

I'm curious to know why Carlos Queirzo has not chosen any players from Benfica I think Carlos Martins would be a fine player. Matter a fact there are no portuguese players from Benfica on the Seleccao. Very, very disappointed.

If my calculations are right we should come second in the group. We wont beat brazil but can & should easily account for korea & Ivory Coast.

This puts us in the round of 16 against SPAIN!. .

Spain will win group H. there is no doubt. If we manage to luckily get past spain. who are hot right now. we will play either Italy or Denmark.

I'm not so worried about Denmark but we cant, and have a poor record against the Italians.

We we can take from the game against China is that Queiroz has not plan B. He continually plays one up front rotating one striker for another.
Its a joke how inept he is.

This is the opportune time to experiment against these minnows teams with new formations.
and provide the team option if the one striker policy will fail.

The quicker querioz gets fired the better.

We should have got hiddink.
my line up

my team

Eduardo(patricio,beto)
Miguel(ferreira)Carvalho(rolando)Alves(Costa)Bosingwa(duda)
Pepe(meira,mendes)
Veloso(meireles,tiago)
Moutinho(micael,deco)

Ronaldo(simao) Nani(varela)
Liedson(maka,almeida)
I feel veloso gives you someone who can cover for pepe when he makes his runs and vice versa and can distribute the ball well to the wings he can just offer more than tiago and meireles...meira offers versatility as he can play dm and central defence and gives us size on set pieces which was our downfall in 06...If you whant to kill a game off having pepe alves meira and carvalho in the middle would be a fortress in the air and on the ground....

Yea im the awful coach?....Your'e the smart guy who picked the same exact team that barely got us through qualifying in a weak group and weak play off...and now we are in the group of death in the world cup with brasil and you think everything should stay the same REAL SMART....maybe you dont watch football at all because if you did you would know deco hasnt played all year and hes 32 yrs old playing profesionally since he was 16 he is DONE...regarding players being professional and knowing positions blah blah blah...why did barcelona dominate last year???? Because all of those players have played in the same system together FOREVER (xavi, iniesta, pedro, messi, puyol, valdes, busquets, bojan, guardiola etc)when you know where everyone is going to be without having to think about it the game is alot easier....wtf have you never played before????....so please know what the f your talkking about before you comment...

I feel the biggest weakness is definitely goal-scoring. Its sad how much Portugal relies on Ronaldo for goals. Liedson is on a hot streak, but how long will it last, who knows. This is my prediction for the starting line:
----------------------Liedson------------------
C.Ronaldo ---------Deco------------ Nani----
-------------Moutinho------Pepe---------------
-Bosingwa---Carvalho---Bruno Alves---Miguel
----------------------Eduardo------------------
excellent formation supremo

The selections you make, and suggestions about playing midfielders who know eachother at a club level is rediculous. We have to play the best player for each spot. The team plays in a system, these are professionals that ate familiar with their functions regardless of the system. They know their role if it is 4-3-3, 4-1-2-3, 4-5-1.... Just put the best players in the pitch. Don't start improvising.

Bosingwa looks to be fit soon. He should play left back with Miguel right back and Alves, Carvalho in the middle. The striker position is more tricky. Liedson (striker), Ronaldo, Simao, Nani/Varela on wings. We could only fit Deco and Pepe playing midfield. With the 4 defenders. Or Ronaldo (winger/striker) with Liedson (striker) and Simao (winger/striker) to fit Micael in mid with Deco and move Pepe back to Defensive mid.

How come he wasn't named for the squade? He has shown some great form thus far. I think it would be a big mistake not to take him. I also read about Carvalho getting injured before the kick off.....whats all that about?
Play with strong teams please!

The kind of game that Portugal team should be playing to prepare for world cup like Spain and Germany are facing strong contenders. Portugal should be playing against high level national teams not B teams eg. Mozambique, Cap Verde Portugal won't get through the group stages!
snoozefest

Eddie, Canada
Never in my life have I seen Portugal play the way they are now. Aside from a couple of individual change in gears by Ronaldo, Nani and even Varela on the second half. The game was a total snoozefest. I think I might have even dozed off at some point. It could be also due to the RTPi comentators but I think it had very much to do with the lack of overall energy to complete anything.
These boys should have gotten some energy drinks before the game or something...
The most boring game I have seen Portugal play. LOOK ALIVE!!!
WHY Cap Verde,Cameroon & Mozambique??????
4 Thursday, 04 March 2010 16:44

I have no question about Carlos's teem selection.I know he will select the best sqad for the championship no doubts about that. But my concern is that we are going to play 3 more friendlies before World cup against Cap Verde,Cameroon & Mozambique. Why they piked these countries? Are our players really going to get there practice from these matches?
chemistry

As i have stated before i feel our biggest weakness as a unit is our midfield. We have been able to overcome that hurdle in recent qualifying due to very weak midfields in our group and playoff. As well as over the past 6 years with familiarity and chemistry(portos champions league winning midfield...and wasnt the 66 team basically all benfica), but when playing brasil and possibly spain arguably the best two midfields in the world wouldnt it make sense to stick to what has given us so much success recently and go with players who are or where teamates and have chemistry and understanding(ie a mendes/veloso/moutinho/nani/liedson or pepe/meireles/varela/micael...)what do you guys think and what would be your midfield?
Goals

I think that many will agree that our biggest weakness is putting the ball in the net. What do you feel is the best possible formation for Portugal to play? And who do you feel should play up front in this formation to maximize our potential to get goals?
Pepe
1 Thursday, 04 March 2010 15:39
Ramos, Canada
Any word on weather Pepe will be ready for the world cup? For him to be part of the team will he have to play a few games before the world cup? Finally if he isn't fit for the team other than Meira who will fill his role as central defensive midfielder for Portugal?
