Danny out to impress ahead of World Cup

Midfielder hopeful over chances

As the 2010 Russian Premier League gets set to begin this weekend, Zenit Saint-Petersburg midfielder Danny knows he is in a battle against time to do enough to earn a call-up for Portugal’s World Cup squad.

The 26-year-old was a regular in Carlos Queiroz’s plans before being sidelined with a serious knee injury last May. Having been unable to make his return before the end of the previous Russian season last November, Danny has now gone ten months without competitive first-team football.

Zenit travel to Krylya Sovetov on Saturday for their first match of the new season, and Danny is aware of his need to impress. “I have three months to attract attention and regain my place,” he told Maisfutebol. “I need goals and assists. At this point, everything is open, but I think there is a real possibility of going to South Africa.

“I want to make it difficult for the selectors. I think I am among the coach’s options and I want to do everything to prove I am back in good form. I am aware that the attacking options are very good, but I will not give up the fight.”
