Silvestre Varela to miss World Cup after breaking leg in training

FC Porto winger fractures fibula

Silvestre VarelaFC Porto winger Silvestre Varela is almost certainly out of the 2010 World Cup after breaking his left fibula. Varela is out for the rest of the season and is highly unlikely to be fit in time to make Carlos Queiroz’s 23-man squad for South Africa.

Varela has been one bright spark for FC Porto in a disappointing campaign for the Dragons. The speedy forward, who came through the ranks at Sporting, was enjoying an excellent season and earlier this month had made a promising Portugal debut in the friendly against China.

He was in line to make the squad to South Africa and Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz was quick to offer his support to the 25-year-old.

Solidarity

“Injuries of this seriousness are always particularly difficult moments in the life of any player. I therefore would like to send a strong embrace of solidarity to Varela, and tell him I wish for his rapid recovery.

“I am sure that because of his youth and the seriousness with which he undertakes his profession he will soon get himself back on the pitch, with redoubled enthusiasm and quality,” said Queiroz, in a message posted on the Portuguese Football Federation site.

The news is a further blow to the Seleccao ahead of the World Cup. Injury has already deprived Portugal of first-choice right-back Jose Bosingwa for the tournament, while the availability of Pepe remains uncertain as he attempts to battle back from knee ligament surgery.

Varela's injury is bad news for him and Porto but not for Portugal, he was never going to be in starting line up and most people have already mentioned quite rightly that we have plenty of wingers.
No big loss at all....

The injury's that may affect our chances are Jose Bosingwa because he's top class fullback and Pepe as well
U gotta be kidding!!

First and foremost I'd like to wish Varela a speedy recovery.
Damn, how unlucky. Although I don't like Porto, at all, he's been on a scintillating form this season. Feel bad for him.
Come on guys

Breaking a leg in training? Seriously. Another huge blow for Portugal. The players dont realize we are about 2 months away. Focus on coming to SA ready to play. Our line up is already screwed as it is with no solid formation. We cant have any more injuries.
another injury?

Fortunately we have the wings covered. He would have made a valuable substitute though.
Key player?

Lol at Larry calling Varela a 'key player' This site has too many jokers on it.

Not a big loss, we have plenty of wingers and if he did make the squad I doubt he'd of seen much action, definitely one for the Euro if he keeps up his form.
This is unbelievable

I cnt believe how many injuries we have going into south africa. We may have the wings covered to some extent but now i dont think you have another skilled player who can come off the bench. Fabio C. just doesnt have the pace that Varela has, and i thought with Varela as a sub you could use Simao, Nani, And Ronaldo on the pitch at the same time and then if you needed a change of pace winger who can outrun nost on the wing, THAT was Varela.

I can only hope and pray that we have no more injuries for the love of God. This is starting to get out of hand, no Pepe, (maybe) we should prepare as if Pepe wont be ready. no Bosingwa, Varela.
oh no...

Wow, what a devastating loss for Portugal, he was certain to make the national squad, he had so much potential to be selected. Portugal cannot lose any other key players to injury, like Bosingwa. However, we do have the wing sides covered with simao, nani, Ronaldo and even Fabio Coetreaou, who is doing very well at Benfica. I think Queidoz needs to look at the other younger players for his selection like Rubien michal, etc. We cannot afford to lose anyone else to injury, or else we could be in deep s...,
