Jose Fonte on the up in EnglandCentre-back enjoys stellar season at Southampton Former Benfica youth player, Jose Fonte, is celebrating promotion to the second tier of English football after a storming end of season run by Southampton earned the Saints a second-place finish in the Npower League One.
The centre-back has been playing in England for four years. His decision to drop down a division when he transferred from Crystal Palace to Southampton in Janaury 2010 has proven to be the correct one.
“It was a risk of mine to drop a division, but it worked out well. I’m back with a great team that wants to keep going up. I had my best ever season, playing 48 full games and scoring seven goals. I’m closer now to the Premier League than ever. At Crystal Palace the fight was to avoid relegation.
“It was a difficult season. We had a lot of games in hand, but we got on a roll in January and had a superb end of season, breaking records in terms of victories and games without conceding goals,” said the 27-year-old.
So impressive has Fonte’s form been (he was named in the League One team of the year) that the defender has been linked to a move to Newcastle, managed by Alan Pardew, who oversaw his move to Southampton. Fonte says that with three years left on his contract a move will be difficult to broker, although he does not rule it out.
