Portuguese abroad: Nani at the double

Rudy hits the net again, Joao Carlos Pereira off to a flyer in Switzerland

RudyNaniAfter the shock of Manchester United’s Champions League elimination last week, Nani helped put a smile back on the face of Sir Alex Ferguson with two goals and an assist in a big win over Wolves, while Portuguese forward Rudy also found that net as he continues his excellent form in Belgium.

While it was a disappointing Saturday for Ronaldo and the rest of Real Madrid’s Portuguese contingent, as Barcelona got the better of the Merengues once again, there was better news for Portugal’s other golden boy – Nani.

The Seleccao winger scored a brace, the first one a typically spectacular individual effort, and provided an assist, as United thumped Wolves 4-1 at Old Trafford to move to within two points of local rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

In Belgium Portuguese striker Rudy was at the heart of Cercle Brugge’s 2-0 away victory at Mons-Bergen. “I’m happy with the result at a difficult pitch to play football on. For the first goal I managed to score with my left foot, and then I got an assist for 2-0,” Rudy told Makefoot.

“We put pressure on our opponents, we were tactically astute and we got back to winning ways. We want to keep this rhythm going for the two games that remain before Christmas,” added Rudy.

Portuguese delight at Servette

In Switzerland new Servette coach, Joao Carlos Pereira, who succeeded countryman Joao Alves, got off to a superb start, winning 2-1 at second-placed Lucerne.

Three Portuguese players helped Servette obtain the victory. Goalkeeper Barroca and centre-back Roderick played from the start, while Pereira brought on striker Carlos Saleiro in the second half.

Ricardo, your simply a very negative person.

Nani is argubly Manchester United best player, only perhaps Rooney is better.

Scored the winner against City in the pre season cup(whatever its called) destroyed Arsenal a couple seasons back.

Bosnia isnt great, but the game was huge for Portugal and he played great.

Sorry but you are a hater, when was the last time Ferguson benched Nani for a big game?

Carling cup does not count, no one cares about that trophy.

Eddie, you're proving all the critics of internet fora right! I have stated my opinion, just like you and everybody else did and you choose to lazily label me a 'hater' rather than take the time to actually debate the point i make. That's, of course, much easier than to try to argument why you disagree with me.
I won't be drawn into that!
There's a reason why Alex Ferguson more than often than not chooses not to play him in big games and when he does he's always a disappointment.
Of course he will play for Portugal, because we don't have any quality alternatives but unfortunately, i don't expect him to win any games for Portugal in Euro 2012.

Ricardo you sound like just a hater. Nani has been very big in many big games for Man Utd over the past 3 seasons. He's played well against Chelsea and Liverpool numerous times which are Man Utd's BIGGEST competitors in the Premier League historically! In the last BIGGEST game which was vs Basel in the CL Nani was Man Utd's best player again! Nani put it on a plate for Rooney and he missed! Nani plays well in big games as well! He has been INSTRUMENTAL for Portugal in Bento's time being arguably the main man in leading the creative build up play for the squad. Nani is a big player full stop!
Only does well in small games

It's all well and good against Wolves, but the fact remains that Nani is becoming an excellent player only for smaller games. The fact that he disappears in big games like against Manchester City earlier in the season is pretty worrying. Also for the national team as in the European Championships we will only be playing big teams. It's great that he scores a wonder goal against Bosnia when given acres of space, but it would be much more important to do it against Germany when tightly marked.
So all in all, nice for United but i am not impressed as to his value.

A much needed thumping by Man United.
Nani is playing well, and hopefully he'll be able to hold form and remain on the field this season.
In regards to Young, in my opinion he's very much like Walcott. A lot of promiss from two players that tease a lot. The problem is that it seems as if pace is the only attribute that can be counted on, dare I say, very much like Djalo.
Yes, there's still time.

Rudi deserves a call up, especially since we are in need of striker help. He does move around a lot up top, but he's not a winger. In 16 league matches he has 7 goals and 3 assists. He is exactly the type of player that should be called up in order to gain Int'l experience.
It won't happen.

I love it that Roderick is getting much needed experience and hopefully developing. He's started and finished in the last nine games.
Nani = AMAZING!

Nani has been and is a brilliant player! Probably the most important attacking player for United! I think he is really bolstered to win the league now that Utd are out of the CL. Nani as he has been doing for the past 2 1/2 years will be the spark for United! Well done Nani keep it up! Hope Man Utd wins the Premier League!
Nani - most technically gifted Man Utd player.

One thing about Nani is - his head never goes down know matter what. He doesn't allow himself to be despondent - he keeps trying for the whole game. He did his utmost in Switzerland CL game - our best player on the night, and he scored the goals that were vital against Wolves. The 1st goal is always vital to settle the team down, and then he made the assist for the Rooney 2nd goal. More importantly when Wolves pulled one back it was Nani who lifted the place again by getting the very important 3rd goal so Wolves would not be bolstered by the goal they scored. By the way it wasn't just a tap in, he had to be speedy to get on the end of Valencia's cross into the box, and he connected and slid the ball into the net like a speeding bullet. Viva Louis Nani!

After doing some research and watching some youtube clips of him, it seems like he is more of a winger than a center forward, but he's got height, pace, technique, and he has been in excellent form, so why not call him up for a friendly.
Great Performance

Nani was on fire. He seems back to his best after an iffy period. Having been United's best player on Wednesday in Basel, he got his just rewards on Saturday.

He seems to have such a better partnership with Antonio Valencia than he does Ashley Young, and with Nani and Valencia playing like they were on Saturday, Young is going to struggle to get into the side IMO.

Oh and Nani scored a tap-in! Puts a fade on his swag though...
