Antonio Conceicao appointed Astra Ploiesti coach

Portuguese back in management in Romania

Antonio ConceicaoFormer Estrela da Amadora and Vitoria Setubal coach Antonio Conceicao is back in employment. The 50-year-old has been appointed boss of Romanian club Astra Ploiesti until June 2013. It is the third top-flight club in Romania he has managed.

Conceicao enjoys a fine reputation in the Eastern European country after impressive spells at CFR Cluj and FC Brasov. “It’s not the first time the club has approached me, but now we consider it the right time to accept the invitation, in the expectation that we can transmit our ideas to the squad,” Conceicao told Makefoot.

Conceicao was talking in the plural given that he will take his long-term assistants with him, Luis Baltazar and Joao Renato.

“It’s a project on the up, both in terms of the sporting aspirations and the club’s infrastructures, given that plans are in place to build a new stadium. We have a lot of hard work in front of us. We’re going to analyse the squad to see if it has to be strengthened, and if possible fight for a place in Europe next season,” said Conceicao.

Astra are currently in 9th place in the table. With the championship on its winter break, the squad is to hold a training camp in Turkey starting on 15 January.
