Miguel Veloso signs for Dynamo Kiev

Miguel VelosoPortugal midfielder swaps Italy for Ukraine

After several days of speculation it was confirmed on Wednesday evening that Portugal midfielder Miguel Veloso has signed for Dynamo Kiev. The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a four-year contract for the Ukrainian outfit. Details regarding the transfer fee and wages were undisclosed.

Veloso, who has spent the last two seasons at Genoa, had been reported as an AC Milan target, but the former Sporting player will now be playing his football in the same country where he excelled during Euro 2012.

Dynamo were runners-up behind Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine last season, but are chronic title contenders, having won the championship 13 times - more than any other team. The fact the club plays regular Champions League football weighed in Veloso’s decision.

“Dynamo is a very prestigious club. I liked the fact it’s a team with a great history and big ambitions and the fact I get to play in the Champions League,” Veloso told the official club website. “I knew other clubs were interested, but Dynamo was the one that was most persistent in the negotiations.”

Although Veloso is Dynamo’s sole Portuguese player, he will no doubt be helped in his adaptation phase by four Brazilians in the squad.

Dynamo Kyiv is a great and succesfull team and Ukrainian Premier League is ranked 7th in Europe, while the Portugese is 6th (according to a trustwothy source www.uefa.com).
He can possibly win the Europe League with Kiev.

Lenny,
first and foremost, Porto and Benfica can't afford the wages given by Kiev.
Second, I believe Porto and Benfica expect to get more for their defensive mids than the 10-15 mil. And if that's all they'll get, why sell and bring in a higher wage that won't command much more in two years.
Third, Veloso is in that in between stage in age and contracts. Being 26 years old, he might still get a bigger look in two years. But he needs to earn the most now.
Fourth, what makes you think he wanted to come back to Portugal?

As for Moutinho, I actually agree that he would fit Man United better. My biggest concern would be him getting pushed off the ball too easily. Someone like Axel would actually be a better fit, but I want hm to stay at Benfica.
I actually think he would be a bad fit at Spurs. He's not a direct replacement for Modric, due to style of play, and the Spurs could be losing quite a bit.
He could get very good looks at Chelsea, Lamps is old now, but Meireles would be moved. He might be moved anyways.

The Nani saga is getting interesting. As soon as he comes out and says the contract negotiations are progressing nicely, a City move for him is mentioned.

I'll be disaapointed if JM goes anywhere but ManU. JM fits in at ManU where he can play his game on a big stage for a great coach.
what...

Wow... horrible move. What in the hell was he thinking... Kiev must be laughing at this deal.
Joao Moutinho

I know that this is a little off topic, but I was wondering what my fellow posters think about the Joao Moutinho transfer saga?

From what I've read, Manchester United and Tottenham are the front runners, but Chelsea is also interested in Moutinho. AVB may tempt Moutinho to go to Tottenham, but I think that Man United would be the better choice. Tottenham's got a great team, but they won't be in the champions league. United, on the other hand, are real contenders in the champions league.

Moutinho will also suit United's style of play, and I think that he'd fit in nicely in a 4-2-3-1 alongside Carrick and behind an attacking trio of Nani, Kagawa, and Valencia. Moutinho is one of Europe's best midfielders, so he'll excel at both clubs, but I think that Manchester United would be the best fit for him.

He certainly went to Ukraine for the money.
How about Porto or Benfica
23 Friday, 06 July 2012 16:15
He would have looked great in either a Porto or Benfica jersey (I would have also included Sporting but they probably don't have the funds available to aquire him). He's only 26 years old. Porto or Benfica could have sold their holding midfielders (Garcia / Fernando) for 10 to 15 million and then invested around half of that (7 or 8 million) to aquire Veloso. After a few seasons of Champions League football with Porto or Benfica and at the end of the 2014 World Cup he could be sold. At that point he would be 28 years old and could be sold to a top tier club for in the neighborhood of 15 to 20 million. I know this is all hypothetical but after what he showed at Euro 2012 I believe he has the talent and potential to excell and take his play to the next level. It's unfortunate that at Dynamo he will not get the exposure needed for that to happen. It's also a shame that the top Portuguese clubs do not invest in the top Portuguese talent when they become available.
both good and bad

Like most have already stated, it's great that Veloso is going to be able to play regular Champions League football for DK. However, I would still prefer to see a player of his calibre in a better domestic league.

Veloso really made a believer out of me in Euro 2012... before then, I really didn't see how he fit with the Seleccao. Now, it's easy to think back about how important his role was and how well he performed it. He and Moutinho were our standout midfielders in this tournament. Meireles might've actually been the only Portugal player to not play up to his standards during Euro 2012.
Lose weight and stay in good form

I still find it hard to understand why Portuguese players want to leave their own league and join clubs in Turkey and Russia makes no sense..except the money issuie. The maint thing is MV loses some weight and stays in good form for his new club and Portugal more importantly.
There were options?

First and foremost, if he left for the money, so would everyone else. This could be his last big deal.
By the way, if he became like Danny he would be thrilled. Danny is loved by the fans, he's been honored as one of the leagues best players and he's paid really well.

People are also assuming that "big" clubs came calling. Nobody in Portugal could afford his wage demands and I didn't hear Newcastle, Malaga, etc... came calling.
Bad choice

True, Dynamo Kiev will probably be playing Champion's League footbal on a regular basis. However, they have pretty much zero chance of accomplishing anything of note and of advancing beyond the group stages. Even if they do advance, they are likely to fail once out.

90% of the time (or more) Veloso will be playing in the Ukrainian domestic league where the quality of play is nowhere near as high as in Italy or Portugal. This will not make him a better player, even if he is guaranteed to start every match. Since the financial details were not revealed, for Kiev to have pulled this off I imagine that the pay day was quite large particularly given the timing, since Veloso's stock has to have risen considerably after Portugal's strong showing at the Euro.

He would have done much better to have attempted to move to a stronger league and team that gave him the opportuntiy to start on a regular basis. I know Genoa is a poor team and in that respect Kiev may be a step up...but only slightly when we consider how poort the Ukrainian league is. I would have preferred a move to a team like Newcastle, Valencia, Marseilles or even Malaga than this move.

Poor decision.
Best of Luck MV

If this truly came down to money then it's tough to criticize a player for trying to take care of his family, they come first.

If he would've signed a less lucrative deal and then tear his knee ligaments in the first year, he will never get a chance to recoup that lost money.

He gets to be a starter and he will play in the CL so it's not all negative, there are some positives.

Good Luck MV!
veloso or manuel fernandez?
17 Thursday, 05 July 2012 16:05
as a holding mid fielder is veloso better than manuel fernandez?who is the best tackler and ball winner?
Veloso

Was he drunk or what? Horrible move. He'll end up like Danny.
Kiev
15 Thursday, 05 July 2012 12:03
Well, I think this is a good move. The ukrainian league is competitive enough and Dynamo Kyiv actually does something on the international level, unlike Genoa.

Yeah, he had a good Euro, but he's not good enough to be a regular starter for a top european team.

@Miggy: Actually, contrary to what you say, most Portuguese supporters see him as an average player (at least the ones with whom I speak regularly). And Nuno's move is not so bad either: he's 36, and although there are good strikers of that age out there, he's always been more of a set up player, so it's difficult to be first choice; he wasn't even playing in Braga, so he couldn't hope for much. Hope he gets playing time and finishes his career in good style with Blackburn's promotion.
Big mistake to do it only for the money
14 Thursday, 05 July 2012 11:37
I hope it was drastically big difference in the money, because otherwise it's a bonehead move to play ffor the Ukranians. Can it really be that no other teams saw value in Veloso?
Surprising move
13 Thursday, 05 July 2012 10:58
I agree with other posters, after Veloso's excellent showing at the Euros i expected him to move to a big club in one of Europe's big 5 leagues, and i expected many clubs would be interested in him. Strange move really, perhaps Dynamo offered a huge salary that he couldn't turn down. Perhaps like Quaresma at Besiktas, this move will rejuvenate his career after a couple of forgetable seasons at Genoa. Or perhaps he loved playing in Ukraine so much this summer, he decided to stay LOL!!!

Anyway Dynamo Kiev deserve respect, they are a huge club, arguably the biggest club in Eastern Europe, with a great history and massive following. They have lost out to Shakhtar in recent years, but will always be fighting for the title, and as long as Ukraine has two representatives in the CL, then Veloso will be playing in it. All the best in his new adventure!!!
kiev is crap but mv is nothin extraordinary
12 Thursday, 05 July 2012 09:28
mv is overrated imo and failed with genoa so naturally noone was interested
idiot
11 Thursday, 05 July 2012 08:29
what a bum.

Is it a coincidence that quaresma and almeida have become more and more average since they went to a weaker league in turkey?

he might need to take a 'snood' with him.
Veloso to Kyiv
10 Thursday, 05 July 2012 07:17
Hey guys! he's not the one to blame..,we all know that MV has been targeted by Several big clubs after his impressive display in Euro,,one of them is AC Milan..but they 'only' expressed their interest in him,but unfortunately they don't make any formal bid to genoa..dinamo moved fast to secure his signature..at least we can say that dinamo is the better team than Genoa (on the verge of being relegated last season..what a shame!)
and dinamo will play in CL..he's still 26,if he can play well in ukraine..he soon would be transferred to bigger teams in the top league like ManU,Barca,Milan,Madrid an so on...
please guys don't lose your faith in MV,he will remain as our first choice DM in Seleccao..as long as he perform well with Dinamo..
Good luck Veloso for the new challenge!! Kiev is your new home today,.
Why?
9 Thursday, 05 July 2012 03:05
OMG, I just checked my calendar to see if it was the 1st of April, I am just gutted! I hope Tom gets to do an interview with Veloso and just ask him why? I mean signing for any of the top 4 Portuguese clubs would have been understandable; or even Besiktas for the very least. Lets just hope Moutinho does not join him.
Best of luck!
8 Thursday, 05 July 2012 02:53
Deserved to move on to a top club, this move will in all probability make him a better player for 2014. Good luck to him.
Wrong move
7 Thursday, 05 July 2012 02:29
Miguel Veloso had a fantastic tournament, so I expected him to move on to a bigger club in one of Europe's premier leagues. Instead, he moves to a, with all due respect, modest club in a modest league.

I just hope that he doesn't rot away like Almeida did in Turkey. Veloso is a classy holding midfielder in his prime, so this move makes little sense to me. He would have been an excellent fit in Milan...
meh
6 Thursday, 05 July 2012 01:54
not exactly what i thought would happen..definitely a downgrade from playing in italy even though he wasnt being used much
It might work out for him
5 Thursday, 05 July 2012 00:23
If you would have told me Veloso was going to be as important or as great as he was in the Euro's, I would have called you crazy. He really made me eat my words. For me Veloso had a tremendous tournament, and hopefully the change of scenery will do him good.
Yes it's the Ukraine, but he'll be in the CL, 3rd qualifiers, and should they advance, he'll be able to show himself. Dynamo Kiev is always in the hunt for first in the league as well, so CL play should continue.
Veloso is 26, but he just may have one more opportunity at a bigger league with a bigger club.
Veloso...
4 Thursday, 05 July 2012 00:04
Is it me or Veloso is seen as an average player by everyone, but Portuguese supporters? From Genoa to Dynamo Kiev. No offence...but you ask any Portuguese football follower/supporter they'll tell you otherwise.

OH and Nuno Gomes has signed for Blackburn. What the hell..!?
Surprised by this signing
3 Wednesday, 04 July 2012 23:50
I thought Veloso would get an opportunity with a club in a higher caliber league. Nothing against Dynamo as they have a great history and play exciting football but I thought Veloso has merited playing in a higher caliber league.

Anyway, hope it works out for Veloso and he does not lose out on the form he gained.
Bad Move
2 Wednesday, 04 July 2012 22:03
What the heck is he thinking?? He totally has the quality to play for a good team in a top league. He obviously was lured there by the salary. I'm very very dissapointed in Veloso for this move. Portugal's top players need to be playing in top 5 teams in the respective top 4 leagues. This simply does not cut it.
Stupid Move

Rather him stay in Genoa then go to freaking Dynamo Kviv. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
