Chaves boss Tulipa eyes Portuguese Cup shock

“This is a competition that throws up big surprises”

TulipaThe Portuguese Cup final takes place on Sunday in what will be a classic David versus Goliath clash. Desportivo de Chaves, despite suffering relegation to the third tier of the Portuguese league, have battled through to their first ever final and will take on holders FC Porto.

To get to the final Chaves had to beat two top-flight teams in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, Pacos de Ferreira and Naval respectively. Coach Tulipa, a cup winner himself in his playing days with Boavista in 1997, believes the match is anything but a forgone conclusion.

“FC Porto may be favourites, because of their past and the quality of their squad, but this is a competition that throws up big surprises. It is essential that my players show a lot of humility, organisation, strategy and competence,” said Tulipa.

“As the head coach of Desportivo de Chaves I am satisfied to see my philosophy in the spirit of the people who represent the club and in particular all the population of the regions of Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro.”

“This cup run has been achieved thanks to the unsurpassable work of the squad in all aspects, knocking out sides from lower divisions and from higher divisions to ours.”

In the not-too-distant past Chaves regularly featured in the top division, but the club from Portugal’s northern border with Spain have fallen on hard times in recent years. A poor league campaign saw the team drop further down Portugal’s football pyramid, making the achievement of reaching the showpiece final at the Jamor Stadium even more remarkable.

The Portuguese Cup final officially brings the curtain down on the 2009/10 season and kicks off at 5.00 pm on Sunday.
