Chaves stun Naval to make Portuguese Cup final

Naval 1-2 Desportivo de Chaves (aggregate 1-3)

Chaves celebrationsSecond-division strugglers Desportivo de Chaves are in the final of the Portuguese Cup for the first time in their history. Two goals in extra time beat Naval in Figueira da Foz, who had levelled the tie early through a Fabio Junior goal.

Coming into the game 1-0 down from the first leg, Naval were soon all square thanks to a fantastic bicycle kick from Fabio Junior on 15 minutes. At that stage the Liga Sagres side were strong favourites to complete the win.

But Chaves held firm for the ninety minutes and in extra time Eduardo, who had come on in the second half, was the hero, scoring twice to put the team from Portugal’s northern border town into the Jamor final.

Chaves will face the winner of the second semi-final today between FC Porto and Rio Ave, with the Dragons strong favourites after winning the away leg 3-1.

Naval:
Peiser, Carlitos, Gomis, Diego Angelo, Daniel Cruz (Kerrouche, 90), Lazaroni, Godemeche, Hauw (Davide, 46), Marinho (Simplicio, 76), Fabio Júnior, Camora

Desp. Chaves:
Rui Rego, Danielo, Lameirao, Ricardo Rocha, Eduardo, Bruno Magalhaes, Siaka Bamba, Castanheira (Flavio Igor, 76), Samson, Clemente (Eduardo, 69), Diop (Vitor Silva, 63)

Goals:
[1-0] Fabio Junior, 15
[1-1] Eduardo, 109
[1-2] Eduardo, 119

My mother's side of the family is from Aveiro, my grandfather is a Beira-Mar fan. I'm not from Chaves but I will be rooting for them in the cup final. This is Chaves chance to make some history for their club and making it to the final I want them to avoid relegation as well. When May arrives Go Chaves!

Come on Chaves. Bring it home!!!!

The Liga Sagres needs more teams from the REAL north of Portugal. Braga/Guimaraes/Pacos are holding it down, but we could really use another team like Chaves. Braga and Guimaraes are especially successful because of the attachment people from Minho have to anything from Minho.

Same with Tras-os-Montes. Very regionalistic and proud people. Would love to see you in first division... pull it together!!!

Didn't realize there were so many Chaves visitors on this site. That's super awesome! I love the city especially the "Steam Water" and the "Park" where I use to ply my footy! Good times. Forca Chaves, Porto doesn't stand a chance. We're the REAL NORTH. LOL.

Wow...I remember going to their stadium in the early 80s when I was visiting Chaves with my parents...not nearly as impressive as Luz, but they were my father's boyhood team and I treasured the GDC jersey I had. I also remember listening to the games on the radio back when they were in the 1st division in the late 80s.

Great to see them in the Taca finals...anyone know if they will get a Europa slot even if they lose as Porto will already have a slot by finishing 3rd?
Whatttt? Awesome NEWS!

Its very likely Porto will be the second team in the final. This will also be their only chance of success this season so its unlikely they will hold back but you never know. Chaves has been a surprise this season and hopefully its an exciting match.
