Ronaldo on the mark again as Real Madrid stay firm at La Liga summit

Valencia 2-3 Real Madrid

Jose MourinhoIn one of Real Madrid’s sterner tests of the first half of the season, the capital club overcame Valencia courtesy of a first-half goal from Karim Benzema and second-half strikes from Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo. Ricardo Carvalho continued to rehabilitate from a nagging injury, while Coentrao was given the night off to recuperate following his exertions for Portugal during the international break.

The opening quarter of the match was extremely tight with each team trying to gain an edge in midfield. There were few chances and neither goalkeeper saw much action until Benzema popped up in the 20th minute. A free kick near midfield was played over the top early by Xabi Alonso and Benzema was quick to pounce and slotted home Madrid’s first goal of the night.

The stalemate resumed after the goal for the remainder of the half but it proved to be merely the calm before the second-half storm.

Tempers flare

Yellow soon became the thematic color of the evening as referee Jose Teixera struggled to keep control of the game as tempers began to rise. Arbeloa, Ronaldo, Marcelo, Ozil, Ramos and Alonso were all booked along with Valencia’s David Albelda.

Valencia fought hard to get back into the match and the game slowly began to open up, but it was Madrid who added to their lead in the 72nd minute courtesy of a Sergio Ramos header. The goal did little to discourage Los Che and they soon pulled a goal back through Roberto Soldado. A powerful counter-attack saw Iker Casillas get down well to block Parejo’s goalbound effort, but Soldado connected beautifully on the rebound, half volleying his shot into the far corner of the net.

Sensing their chance to draw level, Valencia pushed even harder for more goals and it cost them four minutes later when they were caught out by Cristiano Ronaldo. Valencia keeper Diego Alves fancied himself to beat the Portuguese star to a long ball over the top but Ronaldo was able to just nick the ball past the onrushing keeper and showed his composure to finish from a tight angle.

Mourinho celebrates in style

Jose Mourinho, in his delirium after Ronaldo’s goal, leaped onto the back of substitute Jose Callejon, drawing the ire of the home crowd. Valencia demonstrated their tenacity by scoring again through Soldado on 83 minutes, setting up a tense finale. In stoppage time, there was some controversy over a supposed handball that prevented the ball from crossing the line but in the end the referee was correct to turn down Valencia’s appeals.

In spite of the two goals conceded, Real Madrid held on for a reputable victory, but will have to demonstrate more solidarity at the back in order to pry the La Liga trophy out of the grasp of rivals FC Barcelona. Real Madrid will face Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League in midweek before hosting Atletico Madrid in the capital derby next Saturday.

I loved Mourinho's celebration after Ronaldo's goal. It was hilarious!

Real Madrid and Barcelona are by far the 2 best clubs, but I think that Madrid will win it this year. Fabio Coentrao has been struggling with injuries recently, but he has been played as a left back a few times when Marcelo was injured and he played extremely well.

Marcelo and Coentrao are the 2 best attacking left backs in the world. Coentrao provides better crosses while Marcelo is a better dribbler. They both have plenty of pace and tons of energy.

Both Marcelo and Coentrao are not brilliant defensively, but Coentrao is definitely a better defender. Marcelo tends to make a lot of costly mental mistakes, while Coentrao works his socks off defensively and he seems to always be there to make a crucial tackle or interception.

Hopefully for us Portuguese, Mourinho will realize that Coentrao is the better player and he'll make him the first choice left back.

I completely agree with Eddie on Marcelo. It seems though that Marcelo is really called to go forward as Cristiano drifts to the center a lot. It's not so noticeable when they're dominating the match as most of their opponents are back at their own half. For teams like Valencia, though, this can be seen more. It's good when Coentrao and Marcelo are both playing because Coentrao can play almost anywhere! So proud of him! I hope Cristiano will be benched for the match on Wednesday because Atletico is a pain as well.
Well done Real Madrid!

Great result picking up three points against their toughest opponent in la liga besides Barcelona. Valencia is a really good team and it was always going to be a tough game. I'm proud of how they fought for victory! Marcelo's lack of defensive concentration and lack of effort/mentality for tracking back/defending still really upsets me. He was completely to blame for the second goal conceded. As a defender I rate Coentrao higher than Marcelo any day simply for his heart and never say die mentality! He was recovering and needed a rest today so he wasn't there. Marcelo though really really needs to iron out those defensive lapses if he wants to truly become a great left back! Against Barcelona lapses like that can lose the game. Anyway, great goals from Benzema, Ramos, and Ronaldo with the decisive all important 3rd goal to guarantee the win! Those were 3 massive points for Real Madrid's title ambitions and I am very proud of how well they are playing this season as a really solid team! Well done keeping it up and staying 1st in the league Real! Hala Madrid!
