Late Gomez strike leaves Real Madrid with work to do at the BernabeuBayern beat Mourinho’s men in Champions League semi-final first leg Goals from Franck Ribery and Mario Gomez, sandwiching a Mesut Ozil equaliser, gave Bayern Munich a 2-1 win over Real Madrid tonight. Cristiano Ronaldo’s assist brought Madrid back into the game, but it was not enough to overcome an unwavering and irrepressible Bayern Munich side eager to book their place in next month’s final, which will be hosted at their home stadium - the Allianz Arena in Munich.
Real Madrid came into the match in the midst of one of their most difficult stretches of the season, with an away match against bitter rivals Barcelona in store for the weekend. Jose Mourinho once again selected Fabio Coentrao ahead of Marcelo, in keeping with his habit of utilizing the former Benfica man against more dangerous opposition. The visitor’s first-half effort could be summarised as ineffective, as the well-organised German defence prevented them from creating meaningful chances. The best opportunity fell to Benzema in the opening minutes when Ozil’s throughball found the French striker all alone, but his shot was well saved by Manuel Neuer. Bayern were not particularly commanding either, but managed to win a pivotal corner through Franck Ribery in the 17th minute. The resulting cross wasn’t immediately cleared and bounced into the path of Ribery, who finished with aplomb from eight yards. Ronaldo sends free kick over barCristiano Ronaldo, who had been effectively denied service during the opening quarter hour, had his first shooting opportunity in the 21st minute after being fouled 25 yards from goal. His swerving free kick managed to clear the wall, but dipped too late to get under the bar.
The hosts controlled the remainder of the half, with Casillas denying Mario Gomez from a tight angle with five minutes left to play. On the balance of play, Bayern Munich deserved their lead and Madrid would need to apply a more creative approach to have a chance of getting back in the game. Jose Mourinho’s half time speech had at least some positive impact on Madrid, as they started the half on the front foot and should have been level four minutes after the restart when a long ball from Ozil found Benzema in the penalty area. Though the striker had time to shoot, he hesitated and his shot was blocked for a corner. Madrid finally made their breakthrough in the 54th minute through a combination of luck and good work from Benzema and Ronaldo. The Portuguese winger was sent through on goal by Benzema, but had his initial effort turned away by Neuer. The rebound somewhat fortuitously fell to Benzema, whose cross was laid back into the path of Ozil by Ronaldo, leaving the German international little choice but to score. The visitors faded after the goal and Bayern began to exert more pressure on the Madrid back four. Gomez missed a golden opportunity to put Bayern in front in the 70th minute when Ramos failed to deal with a free kick, allowing it to find the striker unmarked in front of goal. Though it seemed easier to score, Gomez somehow contrived to send the ball well over the bar, much to the relief of the visitors’ bench. Coentrao caught outThe pressure eventually got the better of Madrid however, and Fabio Coentrao was guilty of allowing Phillip Lahm to scamper away down the right and cross for Gomez, who bundled the ball over the line for the all-important winner with only a minute left in normal time.
Real Madrid will be pleased to have an away goal to take back to the Bernabeu with them, but will need to improve dramatically in the second leg if they are to overturn the one goal deficit. Bayern Munich’s tactical excellence stymied the creative aspirations of Madrid’s best players, and the Spanish giants may yet be left to rue their lack of composure in the waning moments of the game. Madrid will have to rebound quickly, as their chances of winning the La Liga crown will likely hinge on whether or not they can get a result in Barcelona on Saturday night. by Nathan Motz Follow PortuGOAL on Twitter and Facebook |

I don't like Chelsea and I've been very critical of Barca and there tiki taka when not attacking. But yesterday you had an attacking Barca which is wonderful to watch.
Drogba spent more time flopping and stalling more than anyone else. His job was clearly to stall Barca's attack by making them wait.
Let me add that I've always hated when Busquets and Alves (and Von Bommel) roll around and then get up and run when a call doesn't come. So I must condemn Drogba for the same.
Shouldn't the ref provide such a player with a yellow when it's clear he's doing just that time after time?
Like getting all the help needed from the refs in both legs against Benfica, to be able to get past a superiour Benfica side with no defenders and 10 men. Indeed you are right sir, Chelsea know all about cheating. They are a pathetic team with limitless amounts of cash to spend on players to make up any team they want...yet they continue to play a boring rugby style negative game, every man behind the ball for 90 minutes in front of their own fans...and they should'nt even be on the same pitch as Barcelona, who were as CLASSY as ever, untouchably the best club team in Europe.
Btw I'm not a Barca fan at all...sou Benfiquista e nada mais. I'm just being honest here, and for those of us neutrals who like to watch jogo bonito, we all hope Chelsea are nowhere near the Champions League final if it is to be the beautiful spectacle it should be. Give me any other English team over them, at least they try to attack and play positively. I'm sorry but I just can't enjoy watching teams play like Greece or Chelsea...to me footbal should be about expression...not about destruction. Of course there are different styles to play the game, i respect that...but i have much more respect for teams who PLAY...rather than try to stop play!! LOL
There are more portuguese players on Chelsea than any other big team ouside of Portugal.
Bosingwa, Paulo Ferreira, Hilario, Raul Meireles & Villas Boas was the coach up until recently."
huh? Madrid also has 4 portuguese players, and Mourinho is STILL the coach.
I have to admit. I'm surprised Chelsea was able to win one leg. I thought that Farcelona would win even without the help of UEFA referees this time. I guess I was wrong.

Bosingwa, Paulo Ferreira, Hilario, Raul Meireles & Villas Boas was the coach up until recently. Also Chelsea has 2 Brazilians who played on Benfica just last year Ramires & Luiz.
I think the RM games get highlighted is cuz of the Mourinho, Ronaldo factor.
Barca were as classy as ever, but were wasteful with the many chances they had. Chelsea have ridden all their luck for 3 straight CL matches now, and i can't see it continuing at the Camp Nou....eventually the breaks have to run out. If not then it's gonna be a boring Champions League final for the neutrals...Viva jogo bonito!!!
The real flop of the match was Sergio Ramos. All great defenders have their difficulties over a long season. The first Bayern goal was his fault. He failed to clear a cross into the box that almost resulted in a goal in the second half. Plus, there were several questionable tackles.
As for the game overall. The turning point came when Ozil came off in favour of Marcelo. Then came Granero. From then on Ronaldo was isolated up front. Bayern also deserves credit for keeping him relatively quiet. Real's offense went south. There were FIVE natural defenders on the field.
A possible reason for the second Bayern goal was that Marcelo and Coentrao were confused over who should take Robben. The two play the same position and rarely play with one another.
Overall. It's interesting how quickly perception could change in football. You can't blame Mourinho for trying to preserve a 1-1 away goal advantage going back to Spain. If he pulled it off he would look like a genius. But it backfired on him, of course. But still they have an away goal.
AND, I though that until the 70th minute Real was the slightly better team. The first Bayern goal was due to a defensive blunder by Ramos. I was confident that Real would eventually break Bayern. In fact, I still predict that Real will go through.
In fact, Barcelona is in a tougher predicament. They don't have an away goal which means they likely need to cheat again to go through. Chelsea know all about that. Do they ever!!
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/apr/18/bayern-munich-real-madrid-champions-league an excellent article about it
Real Madrid as a whole were poor, outside of the first 15 minutes. People want to criticize Fabios sliding tackle on Lahm but the same exact tackle stone walled Robben just minutes before then.
All of a sudden Coentrao isn't a left back? By the way Coentrao has started most of the matches verse quality opponents, no matter how much he previously had played.
Real doesn't play tic tac futebol, where Messi is able to not touch the ball for a while and still get his chances. Xavi controls the ball. At Real, everything goes through Cristiano.
Kaka, and to some extent Ozil, Benzema, Higuain and even Cristiano were being save for El Classico.
hahah they make everyone look average.
Why did coentrao start at left back? who have one of the best LB's in the game, the choice is obvious...and you start Coentrao who barely plays.
The subs also puzzled me, why put in Marcelo for Ozil? Marcelo looked like a chicken with no head when he was on, he everywhere & nowhere all at the same time. He plays left back always plays left back, I dont think iver ever seen play anywhere else but left back...ever, so put him in at left back. I am not sure why he keeps ending Arbeloa in there, to put it bluntly... he stinks nuff said.
Ronaldo has proved again he is nowhere to be found when playing strong competition in big games, hopefully he can grow some balls for next few games & the euros. 50 goals this year against inferior competetiton in meaningless games means nothing this time of year. Great players are great because they play great in big games and come throught in the clutch, I m still waiting for this from Ronaldo.
Coentrão was terrible, left back is not his position. Lets hope the Germans have a bad game when we play them at Euro 2012.
Besides that, I think people have dismissed Bayern this season. Having te CL Final in their building is a huge motivation. To be frank, I expect Bayern to score in the Bernabeu, and penalties are most likely.
Let me add that Barca can also be had. Their defense hasn't been nearly as good as in the past.
What could be huge is all the yellow cards that were given out today. Real and Bayern could be without key figures for the final.
The German coach must be laughing his arse off, as long as Lahm is not man marked there is no way Portugal will beat Germany and man marking the opponent's right back is the left winger's job. And if Mourinho can't convince Ronaldo to defend I doubt Bento will.
As soon as they equalized, he switched on his defensive mode and put on Marcelo for Ozil...uh, what?
Marcelo then took his place on the right wing, sending Di Maria into the center of the pitch to cover for Ozil's absence. First of all, Marcelo is in no way a right-winger.
Second, Di Maria is most definitely not a central attacking midfielder.
Mourinho got that all wrong. His decision to put in Granero was no different and yielded no real threat or defensive solidity.
All this to say, Mou made some questionable calls once again.
*Perhaps he was just trying to keep his assets available and fit for the upcoming Clasico this weekend and hoping Real would draw 1-1 with Bayern today. Either way, Real have a mountain range to climb to retain their lead in La Liga AND book a place in the Champions League final.*
@Admin I think it would be a great idea if you could add a warning window to prevent us from accidently navigating away from the article pages so we don't lose our work. I'm sure someone knows what I'm talking about and it's a pain to write it all over again.
Madrid looked very poor, but a 2-1 defeat isn't a insurmountable result to overturn at home. I think they'll go through.
Disappointed by Fabio C's defense on the 2nd goal. Fabio went for a slide tackle on a player out on the wing with no support behind him. Just needed to hold his ground and push player away from goal to force a difficult cross. This was novice defending.
Pepe seemed to be his reckless and over aggressive self at times. Is this defending a preview of what we can expect against the German national team?
Still expect RM to come out more aggressive and win at home. Need to see CR do something against a top CL side.
