Ronaldo silences Camp Nou

Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid

Ronaldo silences Camp NouCristiano Ronaldo scored one of the most significant goals of his career with the winner as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at the Camp Nou tonight.

Sami Khedira’s first half opener was cancelled out midway through the second half by a scrappy goal from Alexis Sanchez, but Ronaldo had the final word with his 73rd minute goal to secure a victory that will surely propel Real Madrid to the La Liga title.

After a difficult midweek for both clubs that saw them fall to their respective Champions League foes, it was Jose Mourinho’s men who came out the sharper of the two. The visitors displayed a dogged commitment to their individual assignments and closed down well in midfield, countering with real intent whenever they had possession.

Cristiano Ronaldo won the first corner of the game and got up well to deliver a header on target that Valdes struggled to tip over. Minutes later, Pepe’s careless pass out of defence was picked off by Dani Alves, who would have been clean through on goal, but his first touch let him down and Casillas arrived in the nick of time to smother the danger.

The visitors’ dedication was rewarded in the 17th minute through a very unlikely source. Valdes initially saved Pepe’s towering header, but Puyol hesitated in making the clearance and Sami Khedira was able to steal in and bundle the ball home for only his second goal in La Liga this season.

Mourinho gets it right

Lionel Messi played Xavi through on 27 minutes with a sublime pass, but somehow the Spanish maestro contrived to miss the target entirely with only Casillas to beat. By now, Barcelona’s influence was growing, but still they were unable to carve open the tight ranks of Madrid defenders. Jose Mourinho’s tactics were spot on in the first half and Los Merengues would deservedly go into the half time break 1-0 up.

Barca continued their dominance on into the second half but had comparatively few looks at goal. The absence of a striker in the middle of the pitch for Barca meant there was no one to run between Madrid’s central defenders. As a result, they were forced to bear down on the flanks, but Coentrao was in much better form than at midweek and was on hand to stymie Dani Alves on multiple occasions.

The withdrawal of Xavi for Alexis Sanchez proved fruitful almost immediately as Barca finally had a forward presence in the penalty area and they were level within minutes. A surging run from Messi and a neat backheel from Iniesta set up Cristian Tello, whose shot was saved by the legs of Iker Casillas. The rebound was struck back towards goal by Adriano, bringing another save out of Casillas, but Alexis Sanchez was on hand to scramble the ball over the line for Barca.

Clinical finish from Ronaldo

Parity did not last long, however, and it was Cristiano Ronaldo who restored Madrid’s lead. Mesut Ozil played an excellent ball down the right, allowing Ronaldo time to run onto it and finish superbly past the onrushing Valdes from a difficult angle, his 54th goal of the season.

The disbelieving Camp Nou faithful fell silent as they watched their team labour away in pursuit of an equaliser. Though Barcelona continued to boss the possession, it was the visitors who created the better chances, and time eventually ran out on Barca, all but ending their hopes of retaining the La Liga crown.

It was a massive effort from Real Madrid and credit has to go to Jose Mourinho for preparing his squad psychologically to overcome the disappointment in Munich and play a complete game and take victory from Barcelona.

Portuguese trio shine

Pepe and Coentrao were unflappable in the face of enormous pressure from the Barcelona front line, and Cristiano Ronaldo was yet again world class with his 4th goal in his last five matches against Barcelona. It was Real Madrid’s first victory at the Camp Nou since December 2007, and only their second El Clasico victory in their last 15 outings. For Barcelona, it marks the first time they have lost consecutive games in almost three years.

Mourinho and coompany will return to the Bernabeu in confident mood to host Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Ronaldo for me is the most complete and best player in the world right now.I also like the fact that he never allowed all the comparisons between himself and Messi get the better of him.He kept working at it to show the world that he's one of the best we've ever seen.He has such a strong mentality.Even though Real Madrid lost to Bayern,i still give my vote to Cristiano Ronaldo for this year's award of world best player(btw:I love Messi also).I think he deserves it.I will be cheering for portugal at the Euros cos of him primarily, and of course my dear Pepe,Coentrao and Carvalho.Viva Ronaldo.Hala Madrid!!!
Va.

Yes, CR did well...but I felt the Real victory was due to Mourinho out-thinking and out-scheming Pep. Though I feel that CR is a better, more complete player than Messi, Messi is a great player in his own right and always causes problems for Real. Pep played Tello and Dani alves out wide, but despite being stretched laterally, the Real defense was still able to neutralize Messi to a large extent. Real were also able to attack with pace, and CR's goal was because Mourinho had the perfect gameplan for Pep's 3-4-3. Busquets dropped back, giving Ozil lots of time. Mourinho played the perfect formation and personnel for Pep's schemes. Defense played great, as did Khedira and CR. Pep too made some questionable decisions, but he had to win to stay in the La Liga race, so he probably did things he wouldn't ordinarily do, such as play only 3 at the back against Madrid. Also, RM also seem to play better at the Camp Nou, than they do at the Bernabeu. Hopefully they'll meet again in the CL final.
Ozil

Ozil was not invisible until the assist. He was MOTM he intercepted numerous passes and started many counters that just werent finished by other players.
Well Done Real!

They've been building and building getting better and better having to play against what has been the best team in the world so regularly! While it has been tough and sometimes even embarrassing, ultimately it has been very very good for Real Madrid and the Portuguese family there! Iron sharpens iron, and to become the best you have to play against the best! I have enormous respect for Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo because they were the courageous ones to step "out of their comfort zones" and into a new challenge in the face of tremendous opposition! That is what I always credit Cristiano Ronaldo for! He has an incredible mentality! He always always gets back up and gets better and better! This was the biggest victory in both of their careers I would say so far and they will be incredibly happy! This was some say "the greatest club side of all time" maybe even "the greatest team of all time". Beating Barcelona is the most difficult match in the world and it amounts to like beating the World and European Champs with Messi lol. Real Madrid is a great great team and I'm so happy for them! They've worked incredibly hard and anybody that has been following all the classicos in the last year and a half will attest to the fact that every time they play Real has been getting better and closer to surpassing Barca. They never gave up, and continued to press on like true champions and they beat Barca in the Nou Camp which is amazing! The whole team played great Ramos stepped back up to his brilliant best Pepe was enormous, and Coentrao showed why he is an absolutely world class left back! Yes he doesn't offer as much creatively attacking wise as Marcelo but he is definitely superior defensively with better concentration, work rate, positioning, marking, and tackling! I believe Coentrao is the best left back in the world! All in all this is a great victory and it is the perfect boost to the squad to galvanize them even more for the Champions League second leg at home in the Bernabeu! They beat what has been "the best team in the world" in the last couple seasons, and now they have gotten the respect they deserve as also being one of the very best and a great team in the world! There are still games to be played, and this victory will give them great motivation and unity and belief! Great team! Hala Madrid!!!
Coentrao solid as ever

Dani Alves is world class and I hate to mention it because he has a big ego but Coentrao did a fantastic job shutting him down. He wasnt beat, not once and for johnieooo.. Mourinho played Coentrao who's a much better defender than Marcelo. Marcelo is better in an offensive formation. This is what happens when Barcelona play with eleven instead of twelve, they get beaten by a superior team.

There is no complaints because we won but Di Maria played terribly and as soon as I saw Callejon, I knew Mourinho lost faith in Kaka. Di Maria and Ozil were both flops until that assist. Kaka deserves better.. but CR is incredible. The way he deals with critics and has been showing up recently in big matches with Atletico and Barcelona. He will be the difference if they turn it around against Bayern. This form is all I can ask for ahead of the Euros.

Although many will say Coentrao has played that much, Mourinho has consistently picked Coentrao over Marcelo verse the thoughest teams.
Well

Ill tip my hat to Ronaldo, he came through when it really did matter, FINALLY.
Pepe & Coentrao played well as well, although I cant figure out why he selected Coentrao over marcelo.

Ozil was the hidden star

While Benzema made erratic passes and took bad shots, Ozil played both ends of the field winning the ball several times and helped setup both RM goals.
Fantastic Win

Huge win for Real. I want to say that win meant a ton more to Real, but Barca losing at home is huge.

I actually feel sorry for both teams to have to play this match between the CL Semis. It gives their opponents a big advantage. That being said, huge teams, need to win in the most difficult of situations.

The Cristiano haters will always be there, as will the Messi ones. Frankly they both look silly criticizing each other.
I was thrilled with Cristiano's posted Quote of the Day.

I would also like to add, that I was a big Benzema critic. He seemed lost at times and just looked weak mentally. But, he has really come on after January. He is much more active and moves with purpose.
Higuain scores, but he misses a ton. He's very much like Suarez (Liverpool). They just miss out on too many opportunities.

Let's see what happens this midweek.
Finally Madrid come out on top

In the Classico, after a long time of Barca domination. This has sealed La Liga for them now no doubt about it. As a neutral, it's good to see, as it balances things out again, and Barca was becoming too dominant. But i have to say this, i find it funny how this season all of a sudden Real has so many Portuguese fans. I wonder why? Were these people all Real fans 3 years ago? Would they still be fans if Mourinho and CR7 left next season? I personally am a neutral when it comes to the Spanish league, and i won't favour Real over Barca just because they have many Portuguese players and a coach.

But I respect anyone else's wishes too to decide who they suppourt, and I repeat it's good to see the power in the Spanish Liga become more balanced this season, even if the 3rd place team is 30 points behind the top 2. That must be frustrating for the Spanish federation, as it has become like the Scottish League these days where you have two giants, and the rest cannot even compete for the League title. At least in Portugal we had 3 this season, and possibly 4 next season!!
It has to be said...

but some of the play acting by Ronaldo, Fabio and Pepe were pretty bad. :)

Having said that great game, Coentrão looked better then against Bayern. (mainly because facing Robben and Lahm on your own is too much for any left back) Ronaldo's goal was fanstastic (full credit to Ozil as well for the pass) and Pepe was a beast.

The 3 Portuguese were 3 of the best players in the match easily, along with Ramos, Ozil and Benzema. I loved Ronaldo's celebration, as if it was so casual that he just scored in the 75th minute at the Camp Nou to take the lead and win the title just minutes after they tied it.

Well done Real. Barca, obivously had the greater pissession stats but they did create much. They pressured well in midfield, forced Barca into bad passess, way more than usual. Real's frontline is much faster than Barca's defense, so it only makes sense that they would play on the counter.
Hopefully, they will play well on Wednesday and get past Bayern.
Ronaldo silences haters

I can't stand that people still label Ronaldo as a big game flop, so hopefully today's season winning goal in the home of Real's hated rival will shut some haters up.

I was only able to catch the last 30 minutes, but from what I've heard, Pepe and Coentrao were also excellent. Coentrao's performance against Bayern was probably the worst in his career, but he is a young, world class left back and he learns from his mistakes.

I'm glad that Real Madrid, my second team after Benfica, got such a huge win. Hopefully they'll beat Bayern on Wednesday.

Forca Mourinho, Ronaldo, Pepe, e Coentrao!!!
4 in a row
2 Saturday, 21 April 2012 23:22
thats now four classicos that ronaldo has scored in a row!

and this just proves my statement, any team able to apply enough pressure to barca can win!

btw i dont know if many of you noticed but benzema worked like a horse today!!!
victory !
