Setubal grab Sporting’s Rui Fonte on loan

Season-long deal struck for striker

Rui FontePortugal U21 striker Rui Fonte has completed his loan move from Sporting to Vitoria Setubal. The promising marksman will play his football at the Bonfim for one season.

“It’s a club that has a rich history and a lot of ambition in the Portuguese League. I’m going to try and help Vitoria Setubal achieve their objectives,” said a smiling Fonte upon his presentation.

However, the forward made it clear his goal in the longer term is to break into Sporting’s first team. “I belong to Sporting and the loan move is to help me grow,” he added.

Setubal president Fernando Oliveira is convinced that is precisely what will happen, saying “I’m certainly going to watch the player evolve here with a lot of satisfaction.”

Rui Fonte started his football education at Sporting in his mid teens. Between 2006 and 2009 he was loaned out to Premiership giants Arsenal, where he made one first-team appearance. He was released by the Londoners and returned to Portugal at the end of last season.
